Abstract:For a non-relativistic scale invariant system in two spatial dimensions, the quantum scattering amplitude $f(\theta)$ is given as a dispersion relation, with a simple closed form for ${\rm Im}(f(\theta)$) as well as the integrated cross-section $\sigma \propto {\rm Im}(f(\theta=0))$. For fixed $\theta \neq 0$, the classical limit is straightforward to obtain.

Abstract:Several recent developments point to the fact that rational maps from n-punctured spheres to the null cone of D-dimensional momentum space provide a natural language for describing the scattering of massless particles in D dimensions. In this paper we identify and study equations relating the kinematic invariants s(ab) and the puncture locations sigma(c), which we call the scattering equations. We provide an inductive algorithm in the number of particles for their solutions and prove a remarkable property which we call Kawai-Lewellen-Tye (KLT) orthogonality. In a nutshell, KLT orthogonality means that "Parke-Taylor" vectors constructed from the solutions to the scattering equations are mutually orthogonal with respect to the KLT bilinear form. We end with comments on possible connections to gauge theory and gravity amplitudes in any dimension and to the high-energy limit of string theory amplitudes.

Abstract:This is the first in a series of papers presenting a new understanding of scattering amplitudes based on fundamentally combinatorial ideas in the kinematic space of the scattering data. We study the simplest theory of colored scalar particles with cubic interactions, at all loop orders and to all orders in the topological 't Hooft expansion. We find a novel formula for loop-integrated amplitudes, with no trace of the conventional sum over Feynman diagrams, but instead determined by a beautifully simple counting problem attached to any order of the topological expansion. These results represent a significant step forward in the decade-long quest to formulate the fundamental physics of the real world in a radically new language, where the rules of spacetime and quantum mechanics, as reflected in the principles of locality and unitarity, are seen to emerge from deeper mathematical structures.

Fractional Soft Limits of Scattering Amplitudes

Abstract:It is a common lore that the amplitude for a scattering process involving one soft Nambu-Goldstone boson should scale like an integer power of the soft momentum. We revisit this expectation by considering the 2→2 scattering of phonons in solids. We show that, depending on the helicities of the phonons involved in the scattering process, the scattering amplitude may in fact vanish like a fractional power of the soft momentum. This is a peculiarity of the 4-point amplitude, which can be traced back to (1) the (spontaneous or explicit) breaking of Lorentz invariance, and (2) the approximately collinear kinematics arising when one of the phonons becomes soft. Our results extend to the general class of nonrelativistic shift-invariant theories of a vector field.
Quantum Scattering of Spinless Particles in Riemannian Manifolds

Abstract:Quantum mechanics is sensitive to the geometry of the underlying space. Here, we present a framework for quantum scattering of a non-relativistic particle confined to a two-dimensional space. When the motion manifold hosts localized curvature modulations, scattering occurs from an emergent geometric potential and the metric tensor field. Analytical and full numerical simulations identify the geometric potential as the primary source for low-energy scattering, while the metric tensor field of the curved space governs high-energy diffraction. Compared to flat spaces, important differences in the validity range of perturbation approaches are found and demonstrated by full numerical simulations using combined finite element and boundary element methods. As an illustration, we consider a Gaussian-shaped dent leading to effects known as gravitational lensing. Experimentally, the considered setup is realizable based on geometrically engineered 2D materials.

From spectral to scattering form factor

Abstract:We propose a novel indicator for chaotic quantum scattering processes, the scattering form factor (ScFF). It is based on mapping the locations of peaks in the scattering amplitude to random matrix eigenvalues, and computing the analog of the spectral form factor (SFF). We compute the spectral and scattering form factors of several non-chaotic systems. We determine the ScFF associated with the phase shifts of the leaky torus, closely related to the distribution of the zeros of Riemann zeta function. We compute the ScFF for the decay amplitude of a highly excited string states into two tachyons. We show that it displays the universal features expected from random matrix theory - a decline, a ramp and a plateau - and is in general agreement with the Gaussian unitary ensemble. It also shows some new features, owning to the special structure of the string amplitude, including a "bump" before the ramp associated with gaps in the average eigenvalue density. The "bump" is removed for highly excited string states with an appropriate state dependent unfolding. We also discuss the SFF for the Gaussian $\beta$- ensemble, writing an interpolation between the known results of the Gaussian orthogonal, unitary, and symplectic ensembles.

Abstract:In this paper I discuss a formulation of relativistic few-particle scattering theory where the dynamical input is a collection of reflection-positive Euclidean covariant Green functions. This formulation of relativistic quantum mechanics has the advantage that all calculations can be performed using Euclidean variables. The construction of the Hilbert space inner product requires that the Green functions are reflection positive, which is a non-trivial constraint on the dynamics. In this paper I discuss the structure of reflection positive Green functions. I show that scattering wave operators exist when the dynamics is given by a Green function with the structure discussed in this work. Techniques for computing scattering observables in this Euclidean framework are discussed.

Abstract:We prove a general Levinson's theorem for Schrödinger operators in two dimensions with threshold obstructions at zero energy. Our results confirm and simplify earlier seminal results of Bollé, Gesztesy et al., while providing an explicit topological interpretation. We also derive explicit formulas for the wave operators, and so show that they are elements of a $C^*$-algebra introduced by Cordes. As a consequence of our approach, we provide an evaluation of the spectral shift function at zero in the presence of $p$-resonances.

Abstract:We study the variance in the measurement of observables during scattering events, as computed using amplitudes. The classical regime, characterised by negligible uncertainty, emerges as a consequence of an infinite set of relationships among multileg, multiloop amplitudes in a momentum-transfer expansion. We discuss two non-trivial examples in detail: the six-point tree and the five-point one-loop amplitudes in scalar QED. We interpret these relationships in terms or a coherent exponentiation of radiative effects in the classical limit which generalises the eikonal formula, and show how to recover the impulse, including radiation reaction, from this generalised eikonal. Finally, we incorporate the physics of spin into our framework.

Abstract:Four lectures given at Nankai Institute of Mathematics, Tianjin, China, 5--13 April 1991 present an elementary introduction into the quantum integrable models aimed for mathematical physicists and mathematicians. The stress is made on the algebraic aspects of the theory and the problem of determining the spectrum of quantum integrals of motion. The XXX magnetic chain is used as the basic example. Two lectures are devoted to a detailed exposition of the Functional Bethe Ansatz --- a new technique alternative to the Algebraic Bethe Ansatz --- and its relation to the separation of variable method. A possibility to extend FBA to the $SL(3)$ is discussed.

Abstract:Roles of quark-pair correlations in the baryon structure and the hyperon non-leptonic weak decay are studied within the non-relativistic constituent quark model. We construct the SU(3) ground state baryons by solving the three body problem rigorously with the confinement force and the short range spin-dependent attraction. We emphasize the importance of the $s=0$ quark-quark correlation to reproduce the $\Delta I=1/2$ enhancement of the hyperon decay, and demonstrate that resulting static properties as well as the decay amplitudes agree with the experiments, if we deal with the $s=0$ correlation properly. Special attention is also put on the consequences of the SU(6) spin-flavor symmetry breaking due to the $s=0$ correlation. Calculated magnetic moments are the almost same as the naive SU(6) predictions in spite of the existence of the strong correlations.

Abstract:We put forward a finite theory of quantum scattering of fundamental particles without using auxiliary particles. It suggests that to avoid ultraviolet divergencies and model faster-than-light effects it suffices to appropriately change only the free-field Lagrangians while retaining their locality in space-time and Lorentz invariance. Using functions of two independent four-vector variables, we base this finite theory on the path-integral formalism on the four-dimensional space-time and the Lehmann-Symanzik-Zimmermann reduction formula.

Abstract:We study 2-to-2 scattering amplitudes of massless spin one particles in d = 4 space-time dimensions, like real world photons. We define a set of non-perturbative observables (Wilson coefficients) which describe these amplitudes at low energies. We use full non-linear unitarity to construct various novel numerical bounds on these observables. For completeness, we also rederive some bounds using positivity only. We discover and explain why some of these Wilson coefficients cannot be bounded.
