Abstract:Ernest Hemingway experiences two World Wars. His unique life experience shapes his personality and his works. A Clean, Well-Lighted Place, one of his famous short stories, has always been analyzed from the theme and his iceberg principle. However, few authors pay attention to his war experience and concentrate on the post-war western spiritual world lurking in the story Hemingway pictured. Therefore, this paper explored and analyzed the inner world that the short story reflects. The conclusion sheds light on the relatively better ways to recover from the spiritual trauma. On the other hand, it is hoped that readers can find a new way to interpret the short story, better understand the author's creative ideas and dig deeper into the connotation of the work through the understanding of the theme and the fate of the characters in A Clean, Well-Lighted Place.

Abstract:Hemingway reproduces the despair and disillusionment of the lost generation after the war in his works, but in “A Clean, Well-Lighted Place” he tries to overcome it without being buried in nihilism. In this short story, the older waiter sympathizes with the loneliness the old man felt after losing his wife, the despair of trying to hang himself, and why he remained in the cafe late at night to overcome darkness and emptiness. The older waiter equates the old man’s plight with that of himself, and finds the importance of the dignity in the old man's appearance. The older waiter reflects on the emptiness of his own life and is now one of those who like to stay late in the cafe. He wants to keep his cafe open late for those who don't want to sleep and need lights. He lights up to fight against the darkness, fills the emptiness of the world, and stays up late at night to fight the futility. Although he is not portrayed as a hero, he knows that light, cleanness, order is necessary for humans to overcome their emptiness, and the elderly's patience and dignified attitude represent Hemingway's worldview that is a value that humans can survive in a naturalistic world.

Abstract:Hemingway’s works have sometimes been read as an essentially negative commentary on a modern world filled with sterility, failure and death. Yet such a nihilistic vision is repeatedly modified by Hemingway’s affirmative assertion of the possibili?ty of living with style and courage. Abstract:This writing aims at finding the mental evidences from a short story written by Ernest Hemingway entitled A Clean, Well-Lighted Place. The writer of this paper wants to show readers that reading a literary work means a communication process between the text and its readers. Reading is an activity that is guided by the text, this must be processed by the reader, who is then, in turn, affected by what he has processed. The interpretation as the result of one reading-act; arises from the structure of interpersonal experience. Theoretically speaking, literary works are believed as a portrait of human’s experience. So, in the discussion, the writer of this article will guide readers how the short story communicates the values as our mirror to view ourselves and conclude the universality of the text. A successful relationship between the text and the reader can only come about through changes in the reader’s projections. Thus the text provokes continually changing views in the reader. The imbalance betwen text and reader, however, is undefined, and it is this very indeterminacy that increases the variety of communication possible. If this possibility is fulfilled, and if the communication betwen text and reader is to be successful, clearly, the reader’s activity must be controlled in some way by the text. The conclusion of this writing will sum up the previous analysis of the short story; and yet show readers that the asymmetry between text and reader stimulates a constitutive activity on the part of the reader. This is given a specific structure by the blanks and the negations arising out of the text, and the structure controls the process of interaction. Key-words : literary text, comunication process

The novel vividly portrays the disillusionment and anxiety experienced by the post-World War I generation, serving as a mirror to their collective identity crisis. This study delves into how World War 1 created disappointment and identity crises in Hemingway's novel, underlining the characters’ identity confusion that resonates with readers. The Sun Also Rises dissects the manner in which the actions, social relations, and broader cultural background of the post-war period shaped the identities of the characters. The novel grapples with the nature of ethnic identity and the challenges of self-discovery in a turbulent and capricious society.

Abstract:The most interesting thing in studying linguistics is how the language is used in everyday life and not what the language components are. Thus the problem is that the language users interpret what is conveyed by other language users. By trying to understand and digest what the speaker is saying verbally in a conversation, understanding what is written by the authors, then we are involved in a language analysis called discourse analysis. The entitled of this paper is An Analysis Cohesive Devices in Ernest Hemingway’s Short Story a Clean, Well-Lighted Place which aims to find and identify the types of cohesion tools contained in the texts in the short story discourse entitled A Clean, Well-Lighted Place by Ernest Hemingway. Then, to find the dominant cohesion devices. This paper uses a library qualitative method. From the results of the study conducted is the dominant cohesion devices at Conjunction 73 or 43.20%, Reference 62 or 36.99, Ellipsis 22 or 13%, Lexical Cohesion 8 or 4.74%, and the least is Substitution 4 or 2.37%.

Abstract:This article isolates three qualities of subjectivity occurring in three stories by Ernest Hemingway, from the existential self of "A Clean Well-Lighted Place," to the historical consciousness of "A Natural History of the Dead," to the radical subject of becoming of "A Way You'll Never Be." It tracks a spectrum of possible responses to the shock of the modern and argues that "A Way You'll Never Be," imagining a subjectivity akin to post-humanism, offers a unique vision of the self as something with no essential anchoring points.

Abstract:While the competition in atomic weapons between the US and the Soviet Union was at the zenith at the beginning of the 1970s,the boom of Japanese economy was ebbing away.The characters in Kenzaburō Oe′s work,like the Japanese in real life,got out of the shadow of WWII only to find themselves in a new crisis-atomic wars and environmental pollution.The reproduction in the novel based on excessive crisis awareness demonstrates the fear in the depth of the soul of modern men,which is undoubtedly a by-product at this historical background.Therefore,The Flood Drowned My Soul can be considered as a prophetic poem reflecting the subconscious fear of the people through the reproduction of the excessive crisis awareness of modern men.Then,how does the writer artistically reproduce the theme of modern men grasped by intuition? By cutting into three parts——the conflict between the actual "events" and fabricated "stories",the graphic composition of the narrative space,and abnormal phenomena of symbols,this paper probes into the fact that like the alarm clock of the era,the Kenzaburō Oe′s literature sings the strongest voice of modern society.

Abstract:Abstract Ernest Miller Hemingway is acknowledged as the most significant writer of the 20th century American literature. No other American writer has ever equaled the popular success and worldwide reputation off Ernest Hemingway. His prose style is universally recognized as one of the innovative of 20th century literature. Hemingway writes of what he knows of his own experience. His writings are honest, direct and clear. The aim of the present study is to make a comprehensive analysis of alienation in the selected novels of Ernest Hemingway. The causes of alienation are enumerated by extracting the influencing factors like anxiety, despair, loneliness etc. The consequences of alienation are studied. This study will focus on the four of Hemingway works: The Sun Also Rises, A Farewell to Arms, For Whom the Bell Tolls, and The Old Man and the Sea. These fictions will be examined with two purposes in mind: first, to view the alienation and its consequences of the characters and second, to observe the mental status of Hemingway.

Abstract:Ernest Miller Hemingway (1899-1961) a famous American Nobel laureate (1954), is considered the master of art and literature not only of American Literature but also of world literature. The famous novel The Sun Also Rises is one of Hemingway’s major war novels that sets the flags for a generation that endured war and cultural disillusionment. In this novel Hemingway concentrates on the artificiality and desperation of the life bred by the First World War. It deals with the post-war disillusionment and moral disorder that left human being shattered. In its pervasive mood of cynicism and revolt with established values, the novel encompasses many themes starting from war to love and disillusionment from traditional values. The paper sets out to investigate major thematic aspects that are considered to the core of rhe novel The Sun Also Rises. It also tries to examine the effects of war on culture and people.
