Abstract:The entire study has been engaged itself to make a comparison in between British Literature and American Literature. Both American and English literature has been divided with various periods which have been significantly discussed while analyzing the eminent works and features of each era. The history of English language, British Literature, American literature has been showcased within the entire study. American and British literature both has their own significance in their own sphere of influence. Comparison between both of this literature will be a total disaster but there are still some of the differences. American literature is motivated with ideologies like political infirmity, religions and social conditions. Whereas British literature is full of romantic tales and literature is more motivated to the human as well as moral values. All of the above have been resulted due to the ideologies of both the countries' writers. The British writers are however considered as the classical writers while American writers are the modern writers. Comparative Study of Chinese and Western Literature

Abstract:The purpose of this paper is to comparatively study the differences and commonalities between Chinese literature and Western literature. First of all, the characteristics of the two are compared from three aspects, namely, presentation methods, thematic contents and literary forms. Chinese literature focuses on mood, ambiguity, and emphasizes the natural flow of emotions; while Western literature attaches importance to structure, logic, and pursues innovation in form. In terms of thematic content, Chinese literature tends to express personal emotions and expresses the harmony between human beings and nature and society; while Western literature focuses on the conflict between individuals and society and emphasizes freedom, equality and human rights. In terms of literary forms, Chinese literature coexists in various forms such as poetry, prose and novels, while Western literature takes novels, dramas and poems as its main forms. Secondly, this study explores the reasons for the differences between the two in terms of cultural background, writers' creative concepts and readers' acceptance. Chinese literature is deeply influenced by traditional cultural ideas such as Confucianism and Taoism, emphasizing moral education and philosophy of life; while Western literature is influenced by ancient Greek and Roman myths as well as religious beliefs such as Christianity, focusing on the inner world of man and exploring human nature. In terms of writers' creative concepts, Chinese writers tend to focus on social harmony from the perspective of traditional morality and ethics, while Western writers advocate the liberation of individuality and the pursuit of the realization of personal values. In terms of readers' acceptance, Chinese literature focuses on aesthetic experience and emotional resonance, while Western literature pays more attention to logical reasoning and thinking. The comparative study of Chinese literature and Western literature can help us better understand the diversity of world literature and enrich our concepts of literary aesthetics and creation. At the same time, by learning from the excellent achievements of Western literature, we can promote the innovation and development of Chinese literature.

Abstract:Joshua Scodel is Helen A. Regenstein Professor in English and Comparative Literature and the Chair of the Department of Comparative Literature at the University of Chicago. His publications include The English Poetic Epitaph: Commemoration and Conflict from Jonson to Wordsworth (Cornell UP, 1991) , Excess and the Mean in Early Modern English Literature (Princeton UP, 2001), and various articles on the 16th -17th century English literature and literary criticism in relation to the classical tradition. In this interview, Prof. Scodel discusses Comparative Literature as a discipline, with remarks about the goals of Comparative Literature, its relation to literary theory, the history of the discipline in the United States, the most important current developments in the field, some major past and present comparatists, and the Comparative Literature program at his home institution, the University of Chicago. The interview concludes with some reflections on Comparative Literature' s crucial role in the study of English Renaissance literature, Professor Scodel' s own major area of expertise.

Abstract:With the ongoing trend of globalization, countries around the world are experiencing deeper and closer cultural exchanges and communications. However, significant cultural differences persist among nations, which can affect the types of literary works produced in a country and, consequently, the substance of literary criticism within that country. To achieve a better understanding of British and American literature and to enhance the comprehension of the literary criticism systems in these two developed countries, it is crucial to grasp the specific manifestations of the significant cultural differences existing in the cultures of the United Kingdom (UK) and the United States (USA) fundamentally. This study primarily analyzes the overview of the cultural differences between UK and USA, delves into the state of literary production and literary criticism in both countries based on this overview, and finally provides an in-depth exploration of how these cultural differences fundamentally influence their literary criticism. The aim is to enable a better appreciation and interpretation of British and American literary works in the future.

Abstract:Literature, as an important part of culture in terms of ideology, is the most convenient material to study the characteristics of different cultures. This paper selects the masterpieces "Peony Pavilion" and "Romeo and Juliet" of the two great Chinese and Western dramatists, Tang Xianzu and Shakespeare, and compares and analyzes them in four aspects, namely, the background of the creation, plot design, main characters' image, and the ending of the love, so as to analyze the differences between the two works in the spirit of the Chinese and Western cultures, the way of thinking, the concepts of human beings, and the understanding of tragedy.

Abstract:A comparative criticism of HAN Yu's classical prose and SIMA Qian's Shi Ji,as an important part of the history of HAN Yu's criticism,had been concentrated on such issues as their works' differences in sentiment,temperament and showing their hands of mastery after their straitened life,particularly in their style and grammar,with the focuses of attention dispersed a bit too much at the early stage.Since middle Ming Dynasty,directed against the sole reverence for the grammatical arrangement of the Qin and Han Dynasties and imitating the outer-appearance but neglecting inner-essence,the style of concurrently taking in Tang and Song Schools had begun to form the self-consciousness of comparison with SIMA Qian's Shi Ji as the reference,and with quintessence and distinctive character stressed most.This shift is an act of succeeding to the right tradition of classical prose and a product of basing prose on the Tang and Song Dynasties and getting to the root of the Qin and Han Dynasties.This idea both was an important methodology of research,but also formed the core content of the theory of classical prose writing on the basis of the theory of comparison emphasizing the literary tradition and imitation.

Abstract:Throughout history, the word “hermit” has been a universal concept in both Chinese and western cultures. Chinese and western hermits keep harmony in diversity. To some extent, in terms of some core values, they step on the same paths. At the same time, differences also make them shine uniquely. In ancient societies and modern world, their simple lifestyle and unshakable pursuit of inner purification have inspired people to seek for the real themselves. Their great minds, unique attitudes towards life and extraordinary contributions have significantly promoted the fields of literature, arts and philosophy. This thesis takes Tao Yuanming and Henry David Thoreau, who were typical figures of hermits as main examples, uses a comparative analysis approach, shedding light on the similarities and discrepancies between Chinese and western hermits. Additionally, it provides suggestions on how to live peacefully and easily. In our modern society full of involution and competition, it is of great significance to learn, inherit and internalize the precious spirits, thoughts and ideas from hermits.

Thus, since the 1980s, this method developed rapidly and became the most important one among the classical literature research phenomena during that period.
