Abstract:Abstract Pyrochar (PC) is always with high pH value, and improper application might increase rice paddy ammonia volatilization (PAV), which is the main nitrogen loss through air during rice production. Differently, hydrochar (HC) takes the advantages of high productive rate and always with lower pH value compared with PC. However, effect pattern and mechanism of HC on PAV are still unclear. In the present study, soil column experiments were conducted to investigate the effect of PC and HC application on PAV. In total, treatments with four types of biochar (WPC, SPC, WHC and SHC, i.e., PC and HC prepared with wheat straw and sawdust, respectively) and two application rates (0.5% and 1.5%, w/w) were set up and non-biochar application was used as control. Results showed that, application of HC with low pH value could not reduce PAV compared with PC. Total PAV increased significantly as the increase of HC application rate (especially for WHC). The increment of PAV under high rate HC application might be due to the strong buffer capacity of soil, the aging of biochar, the high nitrogen from HC. The results indicated that HC should be pretreatment before utilization in agricultural environment considering PAV reduction.

Role of Pyrochar Amendment Toward Carbon Neutrality of Rice Paddy Field by Mitigating Methane Emission: A Global Evaluation by Meta-Analysis

Abstract:Context Mitigating methane (CH4) emissions from the rice paddy is crucial for preventing global warming and achieving carbon neutrality in agroecosystems. While biochars are effective soil amendments for reducing CH4 emissions, their efficacy varies with different feedstocks, soil properties, climate conditions, and field management. A global evaluation needs to be conducted. Objective 1358 observations based on 189 studies from 22 countries were collected to establish a meta database, aiming to evaluate the impacts of pyrochars and hydrochars on CH4 emission from paddy fields and compare their effectiveness with that of other amendments, including straw, organic fertilizer, and industrial residue. Methods The effects of different amendments on CH4 emissions from the rice paddy were assessed using a meta-analysis. Sub-group meta-analysis, multivariate analyses and random forest analyses were used to explore responses to climate factors, amendment properties, and soil properties. The relationship between rice crop yield and CH4 emission under pyrochar amendment was analyzed using linear multiple fitting models. Results and conclusions Results show that pyrochar amendment significantly reduced CH₄ emission by 19.9 % (mean lnRR (effect size) = -0.223, 95 % CI (confidence interval): −0.310 −0.135) and had more stable mitigation effects than industrial residue amendment. In contrast, straw amendment significantly increased CH₄ emission, whereas hydrochar, slow-release fertilizer, organic amendment, and straw amendment had negligible impacts. CH4 emission increased by 45.2 % (mean lnRR = 0.427, 95 % CI: 0.215–0.639) in temperate monsoon regions, with no significant effects in tropical monsoon and subtropical monsoon regions. Pyrochar produced from sawdust was most effective in reducing CH4 emissions by 44.7 % (mean lnRR = 0.593 % CI: −0.837 – 0.348). Linear fitting results indicate that pyrochars produced at 550°C, with 55 % carbon and pH 9, achieved the highest mitigation efficacy. The positive correlation between pyrochar amendment rates and CH4 mitigation, along with the optimal nitrogen fertilizer application rates at 220 kg ha−1, underscores the importance of integrated soil management for sustainability. Additionally, pyrochar amendments pose dual benefits on CH4 mitigation and yield increase, essential for sustainable agriculture by enhancing food production without exacerbating climate change. Significance These findings provide valuable strategies for applying pyrochars in mitigating greenhouse gas emissions and achieving carbon neutrality in rice-paddy systems.
Biochar Amendments to Tropical Paddy Soil Increase Rice Yields and Decrease N2O Emissions by Modifying the Genes Involved in Nitrogen Cycling

Abstract:Water management strategies are critical in regulating nitrous oxide (N2O) emissions from paddy soils under rice cultivation. Biochar is widely used as an amendment to decrease soil N2O emissions. However, the impacts of biochar amendment on N2O emissions under different water management strategies in paddy soils have not been investigated thoroughly, and the underlying mechanisms remain poorly understood. In particular, the effects of mid-season water drainage, a strategy used for water conservation, need to be better understood. In this study, a pot experiment was conducted including six treatments: alternating dry-wet conditions during the mid-season period without and with 2% (w/w) biochar (AWD1 and AWD2, respectively), continuous flooding during the mid-season period without (CF1) and with 2% (CF2) biochar, and regular mid-season drainage during the mid-season period without (CON1) and with 2% (CON2) biochar. All treatments received inorganic nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium fertilizers (NPK) administered in a split application. We found that fluxes of N2O emission peaked after the two fertilizers’ additions. No significant difference in the first N2O flux peak was found among different treatments. There also was no difference in the second N2O flux peak in both CF treatments, whereas biochar addition significantly decreased the second N2O flux peak in AWD2 and CON2 treatments. This was mainly due to increased nosZ gene copies and decreased ratios of denitrification and amoA genes to nosZ gene copies. Biochar amendments resulted in significant stimulation of nifH gene copies in the AWD2 treatment. Lastly, biochar increased rice yields in all treatments. Our study suggested that AWD2 was the optimal management strategy for mitigating N2O emissions and improving rice production in this tropical paddy soil.
Mechanism of Al toxicity alleviation in acidic red soil by rice-straw hydrochar application and comparison with pyrochar

Abstract:In the past decade, biochar has been widely regarded as a new type of soil conditioner that can effectively control soil acidification and alleviate Al toxicity. Hydrochar is identified as a more economical carbon material than pyrochar, but its effect on Al toxicity and the associated mechanism have not been studied. Thus, a two-stage indoor incubation experiment was conducted to investigate the effect of rice-straw hydrochar (HC, application rate: 1/2/3 %) on maize seedling root growth, soil solution Al activity, soil exchangeable Al and pH buffering ability in acidic red soils from two sites. We also used pyrochar (PC, application rate: 3 %) produced from the same rice straw for comparison. Except for HC-1 %, both hydrochar and pyrochar addition significantly stimulated relative root elongation (136.36 % ~ 284.09 %), diminished the cell death ratio (27.96 % ~ 85.56 %) and Al content in root tips (18.80 % ~ 80.11 %) by decreasing the total Al content (44.78 % ~ 76.10 %) and the proportion of Al3+ species (27 % ~ 32 %) in soil solution. Hydrochar did not significantly promote the soil pH buffer capacity (pH-BC) or effective cation exchange capacity (ECEC), while PC-3 % did. The DOC (dissolved organic carbon) content of soil solution was dramatically elevated by 203.9 % ~ 783.2 % after hydrochar addition. Hydrochar mitigates Al activity in soil solution mainly through Al-DOC complexation and adsorption, thus suppressing the Al toxicity of maize roots. Hydrochar may be an economical soil amendment for ameliorating Al toxicity despite its overall alleviation effect on Al toxicity being lower than pyrochar.
Hydrothermal carbonization of biogas slurry and cattle manure into soil conditioner mitigates ammonia volatilization from paddy soil

Abstract:Hydrothermal carbonization of biogas slurry and animal manure into hydrochar could enhance waste recycling waste and minimize ammonia (NH3) volatilization from paddy fields. In this study, cattle manure-derived hydrochar prepared in the presence of Milli-Q water (CMWH) and biogas slurry (CMBSH), and biogas slurry-based hydrochar embedded with zeolite (ZHC) were applied to rice-paddy soil. The results demonstrated that CMBSH and ZHC treatments could significantly mitigate the cumulative NH3 volatilization and yield-scale NH3 volatilization by 27.9-45.2% and 28.5-45.4%, respectively, compared to the control group (without hydrochar addition), and significantly correlated with pH and ammonium-nitrogen (NH4+-N) concentration in floodwater. Nitrogen (N) loss via NH3 volatilization in the control group accounted for 24.9% of the applied N fertilizer, whereas CMBSH- and ZHC-amended treatments accounted for 13.6-17.9% of N in applied fertilizer. The reduced N loss improved soil N retention and availability for rice; consequently, grain N content significantly increased by 6.5-14.9% and N-use efficiency increased by 6.4-16.0% (P < 0.05), respectively. Based on linear fitting results, NH3 volatilization mitigation resulted from lower pH and NH4+-N concentration in floodwater that resulted from the acidic property and specific surface area of hydrochar treatments. Moreover, NH3-oxidizing archaea abundance in hydrochar-treated soil decreased by 40.9-46.9% in response to CMBSH and ZHC treatments, potentially suppressing NH4+-N transformation into nitrate and improving soil NH4+-N retention capacity. To date, this study applied biogas slurry-based hydrochar into paddy soil for the first time and demonstrated that ZHC significantly mitigated NH3 and increased N content. Overall, this study proposes an environmental-friendly strategy to recycle the wastes, biogas slurry, to the paddy fields to mitigate NH3 volatilization and increase grain yield of rice.

Mechanisms of Biochar Decreasing Methane Emission from Chinese Paddy Soils

Abstract:Paddy fields are one of the largest anthropogenic sources of global CH4 emission. A decrease in paddy CH4 emission can contribute significantly towards the control of global warming. Recent studies have demonstrated that the application of biochar in paddy soils has such a capability, but its underlying mechanism has yet to be elucidated. In this investigation, we studied CH4 emission, methanogenic archaeal, as well as methanotrophic proteobacterial communities, from microcosms derived from two paddy soils, Inceptisol and Ultisol. Both soils were amended with biochar at different pyrolysis temperatures (300 degrees C, 400 degrees C and 500 degrees C) at field condition. The soil CH4 flux was monitored across whole rice season in 2010; the functional guilds communities were analyzed by PCR-DGGE and real-time quantitative PCR (qPCR). It is found that paddy CH4 emissions significantly decreased under biochar amendments, which, interestingly, didn't result from the inhibition of methanogenic archaeal growth. qPCR further revealed that biochar amendments (1) increased methanotrophic proteobacterial abundances significantly, and (2) decreased the ratios of methanogenic to methanotrophic abundances greatly. These results shed insight on the underlying mechanism of how biochar decreases paddy CH4 emission. Abstract:Hydrochar is proposed as a climate-friendly organic fertilizer, but its potential impact on greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions in paddy cultivation is not fully understood. This two-year study compared the impact of exogenous organic carbon (EOC) application (rice straw and hydrochar) on GHG emissions, the net ecosystem carbon budget (NECB), net global warming potential (net GWP), and GHG emission intensity (GHGI) in a rice pot experiment using either flooding irrigation (FI) or controlled irrigation (CI). Compared with FI, CI increased ecosystem respiration by 23 - 44 % and N2O emissions by 85 - 137 % but decreased CH4 emissions by 30 - 58 % (p < 0.05). Since CH4 contributed more to net GWP than N2O, CI reduced net GWP by 16 - 220 %. EOC amendment increased crop yield by 5 - 9 % (p < 0.05). Compared with CK, hydrochar application increased initial GHG emission, net GWP and GHGI in the first year, while in the second year, there was no significant difference in net GWP and GHGI between CI-hydrochar and CK. Compared with straw addition, hydrochar amendment reduced net GWP and GHGI by 20 - 66 % and 21 - 66 %; and exhibited a lower net CO2 emission when considering the energy input during the hydrochar production. These findings suggest that integrated CI-hydrochar practices would be a sustainable and eco-friendly way for organic waste management in rice production as it holds potential to enhance the NECB and SOC sequestration of rice production, while also offsetting the extra carbon emissions from organic inputs.
Microstructural investigation of the unsaturated hydraulic properties of hydrochar-amended soils

Abstract:Hydrochar is an urban soil amender that supports plant growth on slopes. It is a biomass-derived carbon-rich material produced by the hydrothermal carbonation process; thus, it has a different pore structure from biochar produced by pyrolysis. The effects of hydrochar on the hydraulic properties of unsaturated compacted soils and the underlying pore-level soil-hydrochar interaction mechanisms are unclear. In this study, silty-clay sand was amended by grass-derived hydrochars produced at two hydrothermal carbonisation temperatures (180 and 240 °C, denoted as H-180 and H-240, respectively) with different mass proportions ( ). The pore and throat size distributions, water retention curves (WRCs) and hydraulic conductivity functions (HCFs) of the soils with and without amendment were measured. The results showed that hydrochar improved the soil water retention capability as the smaller hydrochar particles filled the soil pores with diameters larger than 290 μm. Compared with the increase in air-entry value made by H-180, the one made by H-240 was more substantial as this type of hydrochar altered the soil pores to be smaller in size. Hydrochar also increased the hydraulic conductivity of the soil by half to one order of magnitude due to the increase in the throat frequency and the presence of hydrochar intra-pores. One exception was the amendment by H-180 at of 2.5%, wherein the HCF was reduced due to pore clogging at throat diameters less than 90 μm and more than 250 μm. Finally, amending the soil with either H-180 or H-240 at of 5% always improved the WRC and HCF, thereby benefiting plant water uptake.

Abstract:Directly returning rice straw to the paddy soil would significantly stimulate methane emission, and hydrochar has potential to be used as soil conditioner. However, the effects of hydrochar on the methane emission from paddy soil and the related mechanisms are still unclear. In the present study, straw-based hydrochar obtained at 200 degrees C (HC200), 250 degrees C (HC250) and 300 degrees C (HC300) and hydrochar after removal of bio-oil at these temperatures (CHC200, CHC250, and CHC300) were prepared and added to the paddy soil. The application of HC200, HC250 and HC300 resulted in the enhanced methane production compared to the control, showing 4.3, 1.6 and 1.5-fold higher methane production, respectively. It was related to the large amount of dissolved organic matter (DOM) released from hydrochar. Excitation-emission matrix fluorescence spectroscopy with parallel factor analysis (EEM-PARAFAC) showed that the hydrochar-derived DOM mainly included humic-like, phenolic and less aromatic structures, and with the increase of hydrothermal temperature, the content of humic-like substances and phenols increased, while biodegradable organics decreased. This was consistent with the maximum methane production by HC200. After incubation, there was no low-aromatic structures observed in the soil leachate, and the residual organics were mainly humus. The EEM-PARAFAC results were supported by compositional characterization of soil leachate by high-resolution mass spectrometry, and the refractory organics released from hydrochar was mainly lignins or (CRAM)-like structures in the range of H/C 0.8-1.6 and O/C = 0.1-0.5. The organics dissolved from the washed hydrochar was significantly reduced, and some washed hydrochar (CHC250 and CHC300) even inhibited methane emission possibly due to their ability to adsorb organics. Microbial analysis further showed that the increased methane production resulted from hydrochar was associated with the enrichment of Janibacter, Anaeromyxobacter, Anaerolinea and Sporacetigenium. Abstract:Application of char amendments (e.g., pyrochar or biochar, hydrochar) in degraded soils is proposed as a promising solution for mitigating climate change via carbon sequestration and greenhouse gases (GHGs) emission reduction. However, the hydrochar-mediated microbial modulation mechanisms underlying N2O emissions from coastal salt-affected soils, one of essential blue C ecosystems, were poorly understood. Therefore, a wheat straw derived hydrochar (SHC) produced at 220 °C was prepared to investigate its effects on N2O emissions from a coastal salt-affected soil in the Yellow River Delta and to distinguish the microbial regulation mechanisms in comparison with corresponding pyrochar pyrolyzed at 500 °C (SPC) using a 28-day soil microcosm experiment. Compared with SPC, the acidic SHC (pH 4.15) enriched in oxygenated functional groups, labile C and N constituents. SHC application more efficiently depressed cumulative soil N2O emissions (48.4-61.1 % vs 5.57-45.2 %) than those of SPC. SHC-induced inhibition of ammonia-oxidizing gene (amoA)-mediated nitrification and promotion of full reduction of N2O to N2 by nitrous oxide reductase gene (nosZ) were the underlying microbial mechanisms. Structural equation models further revealed that SHC-modulated bacterial N-transformation responses, i.e., inhibited nitrification and promoted heterotrophic denitrification, mainly contributed to reduced N2O emissions, whereas modification of soil properties (e.g., decreased pH, increased total C content) by SPC dominantly accounted for decreased N2O emissions. These results address new insights into microbial regulation of N2O emission reduction from the coastal salt-affected soils amended with hydrochar, and provide the promising strategies to enhance C sequestration and mitigate GHG emissions in the blue C ecosystems.
Biochar Changes Thermal Activation of Greenhouse Gas Emissions in a Rice–lettuce Rotation Microcosm Experiment

Abstract:Despite numerous studies of the effects of biochar amendments on soil greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions in recent years, the intrinsic temperature sensitivity of GHG emissions in biochar-amended soils is still not clear. In order to investigate the effects of biochar on the thermal activation of GHG emissions, the GHG emissions and their activation energies (E-a) were analyzed in a rice-lettuce rotation microcosm experiment. The experiment had five treatments: control (CK), chemical fertilizers (NPK), and three biochar application rates that are equivalent to 10 Mg ha(-1) biochar (BC10), 20 Mg ha(-1) biochar (BC20) and 40 Mg ha(-1) biochar (BC40). The study showed that biochar treatments reduced CO2 and N2O emissions by lowering their E-a compared with the NPK treatment in the rice cultivation season. The biochar amendment treatments significantly reduced N2O cumulative emissions by 55.2-72.9% compared with the NPK treatment in the lettuce cultivation season largely due to the thermally deactivated impact of soil temperature on N2O emissions. Microbial biomass carbon was increased in the lower rates of biochar amendment in both crop cultivation seasons. These findings suggest that biochar amendment of soil has the potential to decrease the positive and increase the negative E-a of GHG emissions, with the implication of mitigating GHG emissions from cropland soils that would otherwise be increased by applying chemical fertilizers in the context of rising global temperature. Production of biochar from agricultural wastes, which is a method of cleaner production, and its application to the soil shows its potential for reducing GHG emissions by changing the thermal activation of the emissions during rice-lettuce crop rotation. Effects of Biochar Amendment on Net Greenhouse Gas Emissions and Soil Fertility in a Double Rice Cropping System: A 4-Year Field Experiment

Abstract:A 4-year field experiment was conducted to investigate the effects of biochar amendment on the net greenhouse gas emission (NGHGE), greenhouse gas intensity (GHGI), soil fertility and crop yield in a typical double rice cropping system in the central subtropics of China, from April 2012 to April 2016. Three biochar treatments were studied in this experiment, with application rates of 0, 24 and 48 t ha(-1) (named CK, LB and HB, respectively) using straw-derived biochar applied once at the beginning of the experiment. In each treatment, the fluxes of methane (CH4), nitrous oxide (N2O) and soil heterotrophic respiration (Rh) were measured using a static chamber/gas chromatography method. Major soil fertility properties were also determined throughout the experimental period. Biochar amendment was found to persistently decrease annual total CH4 emissions by 20 to 51% in the four years, but increased the annual total N2O emissions and Rh by 150 to 190% and 2 to 19% in the first year and the following three years, respectively. On a 4-year average, biochar addition significantly reduced annual NGHGE and GHGI by 156 to 264% and 159 to 278%, respectively (p < 0.05), with much higher reduction in the first year than those in the following three years (916 to 1911% vs 24 to 51%) due to soil carbon sequestration from biochar addition in the first year. The reduction of NGHGE and GHGI was mainly caused by the decrease of CH4 emissions (71 to 74% contribution), and the increase of soil carbon sequestration (25 to 29% contribution) in biochar treatments. Biochar amendment also significantly and persistently increased soil pH, total organic carbon (TOC), total nitrogen (TSN), and total phosphorus (TSP) by 6 to 14%, 33 to 61%, 11 to 15%, and 9 to 12%, respectively (p < 0.05), in the four years. Significant increases (p < 0.05) of microbial biomass carbon and nitrogen contents were found only in the first year after biochar amendment. Soil pH was also increased significantly (p < 0.05) with biochar amendment, but showed a declining trend in the four years. Annual grain yields for the biochar treatments were enhanced by 1 to 13%, with an average of 4 to 7% in the four years, compared to CK (p = 0.07-0.26). Compared to the LB treatment, the HB treatment significantly decreased average NGHGE and GHGI, and significantly increased average soil pH value and TOC content, but there was no significantly difference in average TSN, TSP, and yield between LB and HB treatments (p < 0.05). The gross margin analysis by considering the profit from rice grain, gain for NGHGE, and cost for biochar indicated that the economical profit for the LB treatment might be higher than that for the CK and HB treatments. Our results suggest that addition of biochar at 24 t ha(-1) can be regarded as a consistently effective and economic measure for greenhouse gas emission mitigation, and soil fertility improvement, in the double rice cropping system.
Reducing Ammonia Volatilization from Paddy Field with Rice Straw Derived Biochar

Abstract:Ammonia (NH3) volatilization is a major loss of nitrogen fertilizer in paddy fields. The incorporation of straw or biochar has been considered to be the alternative options for soil improvement and agriculture sustainability. A field experiment was conducted to evaluate the potential role of rice straw and rice straw derived biochar in controlling NH3 volatilization according to the conventional nitrogen fertilizer level (urea, 270 kg N ha-1) during one rice (Oryza sativa L., cv. Xiushui134) growing season. Four treatments comprised rice straw at the rate of 8 t ha-1 (RS); rice straw derived biochar at the rate of 2.8 t ha-1 (RSBL); rice straw derived biochar at the rate of 22.5 t ha-1 (RSBH) and a control (CK). Compared to straw application, biochar incorporation reduced the cumulative NH3 volatilization (about 20%) from paddy fields significantly (p < 0.05), promoted rice yields and plant N aboveground as well as increased the abundance of ammonia oxidation amoA genes. In contrast with the control, the ratios of NH3-N to total N input for RS, RSBL and RSBH declined significantly 4.15%, 4.40% and 11.12%, respectively (p < 0.05). Reduced NH3 volatilization in RSB treatments were mainly attributed to the decrease of NH4+-N concentration in the surface water, which could resulted from the enhancement of rice growth and the promotion of ammonia oxidation in soil. The increase of soil pH and soil CEC with biochar amendment played important roles in nitrogen retention and nitrogen cycle in soil. These results indicated that the incorporation of rice straw derived biochar instead of rice straw could be a promising approach to controlling NH3 volatilization and improving rice yield.
