Abstract:A 6-year field experiment was conducted to assess the effects of biogas slurry (BS) application on rice yield, soil nutrients, soil microbial activity (MicroResp™) and community composition (16S rRNA gene sequencing) in paddy field in southeast China. The experiment included five treatments: (1) 270 kg N ha−1 from urea (mineral fertilizers only, MF); (2) 135 kg N ha−1 from urea and 135 kg N ha−1 from BS (BS1); (3) 270 kg N ha−1 from BS (BS2); (4) 405 kg N ha−1 from BS (BS3) and (5) 540 kg N ha−1 from BS (BS4). Results showed that no significant differences were found in average rice yield between the MF and BS treatments (BS1–BS4). Both soil available phosphorus (AP) and soil available potassium (AK) increased with an increasing application rate of BS. The average substrate-induced respiration was significantly higher in the treatment with lower rate of BS (BS1 and BS2) than in other treatments and then decreased with increasing application rate of BS. Soil microbial communities were affected by BS application. Chloroflexi, Proteobacteria and Acidobacteria were the dominant bacterial phyla across all soil samples. The BS application resulted in a relative abundance of Nitrospirae 2.6–3.7 times than that in MF. Our results also indicated that AP and AK were the two main factors affecting soil microbial activity and community. Overall, the results suggest that the replacement of chemical fertilizer with BS may be an alternative management practice for improving soil quality, soil fertility and nutrient balance in paddy field.
Effect of Biogas Slurry Application on CH4and N2O Emissions, Cu and Zn Uptakes by Whole Crop Rice in a Paddy Field in Japan

Abstract:Abstract Effects of 4-year consecutive application of biogas slurry (BS) at rates of 0 (NF), 100 (BS100) and 300 (BS300) kg nitrogen (N) ha−1 on yield of whole crop rice (Oryza sativa L. var. Leaf Star) and environmental impacts were investigated in a field experiment in comparison with a conventional rate of chemical fertilizer CF100 (100 kg N ha−1). Average biomass production was comparable between BS100 (1.9 ± 0.1 kg dry matter m−2) and CF100 (1.8 ± 0.1 kg m−2) and significantly (P < 0.01) highest in BS300 (2.1 ± 0.1 kg m−2). Four years’ average methane (CH4) emissions during the growing periods were significantly (P < 0.05) highest in BS300 (43.7 ± 18.4 g m−2 season−1), followed by BS100 (32.0 ± 3.0 g m−2 season−1) and then NF (23.5 ± 8.2 g m−2 season−1) and CF100 (20.3 ± 3.3 g m−2 season−1), indicating that BS application may cause a potential risk of CH4 emission. There were no significant differences in copper (Cu) and zinc (Zn) uptakes by the rice plant between BS100 and CF100, but significantly higher Zn content was observed in the grain of BS300 in 2011, indicating a potential risk of higher heavy metal uptake in BS300. Compared with CF100, no significant higher accumulations of extractable and total forms of Cu and Zn in soil were observed from four years of consecutive BS application. This study revealed that the application of BS, generated from pig manure, to rice fields at the conventional rate (100 kg N ha−1) may be considered to substitute chemical fertilizer utilization without additional environmental impacts in greenhouse gas emission and heavy metal uptake.
Sewage sludge-derived hydrochar that inhibits ammonia volatilization, improves soil nitrogen retention and rice nitrogen utilization

Abstract:Hydrothermal carbonization (HTC) is a promising technique for treating sewage sludge. In this study, three sewage sludge-derived hydrochars produced with water (SSHW), 1 wt% magnesium citrate (SSHM) solution, and 1 wt% magnesium citrate mixed with 1 wt% sulfuric acid (SSHMS) solution were applied to columns of packed paddy soil. We evaluated the effects of these differently modified sewage sludge-hydrochars on ammonia volatilization, soil nitrogen (N) retention and rice growth. Results showed that compared to the control, SSHMS reduced the cumulative ammonia volatilization determined after three split application of N-fertilizer. SSHM and SSHMS both reduced the yield-scale ammonia volatilization by 20.3% and 41.2% respectively. Moreover, the addition of three sewage sludge-derived hydrochars increased soil ammonium-N retention after the first supplementary fertilization; however, after the second supplementary fertilization, only SSHMS addition significantly increased soil ammonium-N retention. Of the three hydrochars tested, SSHMS has the strongest effects on soil ammonium-N retention and inhibition of ammonium-N loss in floodwater. This was attributed to increased ammonium sorption driven by SSHMS's lower surface pH and porous diameter, larger adsorption porous volume and higher abundance of carboxyl functional groups. Additionally, the increased soil N retention increased grain N content and yield. Our results provide a novel method to valorize sewage sludge into a valuable fertilizer that if applied to paddy soil it can inhibit ammonia volatilization, N loss in floodwater, and promote N use efficiency by rice, with positive implications for sustainable rice production.
Dentoskeletal effects and facial profile changes in young adults treated with the Herbst appliance.

Abstract:This prospective Herbst study analyzed the sagittal dental and skeletal changes contributing to Class II correction in young adults. Additionally, the alteration in skeletal and soft tissue convexity occurring during treatment was assessed. Early adolescent subjects in the permanent dentition who had been treated with the Herbst appliance were used for comparison. Lateral headfilms from before and after an average treatment period of 8.5 months for the young adults and 7.1 months for the adolescents were evaluated. All adult and adolescent subjects were treated to either Class I or overcorrected Class I occlusal relationships. In both groups the improvement in sagittal incisor and molar relationships was achieved more by dental changes than by skeletal ones. The amount of skeletal change contributing to overjet and molar correction was smaller in the young adult group (22% and 25%, respectively) than in the early adolescent group (39% and 41%, respectively). Skeletal and soft tissue facial profile convexity was reduced in adults and adolescents. Facial profile improvement did not differ between the two groups. The results of this study revealed that the Herbst appliance is most effective in the treatment of Class II malocclusion in young adults. It is suggested that this treatment method could be an alternative to orthognathic surgery in borderline Class II cases.
Reducing Ammonia Volatilization from Paddy Field with Rice Straw Derived Biochar

Abstract:Ammonia (NH3) volatilization is a major loss of nitrogen fertilizer in paddy fields. The incorporation of straw or biochar has been considered to be the alternative options for soil improvement and agriculture sustainability. A field experiment was conducted to evaluate the potential role of rice straw and rice straw derived biochar in controlling NH3 volatilization according to the conventional nitrogen fertilizer level (urea, 270 kg N ha-1) during one rice (Oryza sativa L., cv. Xiushui134) growing season. Four treatments comprised rice straw at the rate of 8 t ha-1 (RS); rice straw derived biochar at the rate of 2.8 t ha-1 (RSBL); rice straw derived biochar at the rate of 22.5 t ha-1 (RSBH) and a control (CK). Compared to straw application, biochar incorporation reduced the cumulative NH3 volatilization (about 20%) from paddy fields significantly (p < 0.05), promoted rice yields and plant N aboveground as well as increased the abundance of ammonia oxidation amoA genes. In contrast with the control, the ratios of NH3-N to total N input for RS, RSBL and RSBH declined significantly 4.15%, 4.40% and 11.12%, respectively (p < 0.05). Reduced NH3 volatilization in RSB treatments were mainly attributed to the decrease of NH4+-N concentration in the surface water, which could resulted from the enhancement of rice growth and the promotion of ammonia oxidation in soil. The increase of soil pH and soil CEC with biochar amendment played important roles in nitrogen retention and nitrogen cycle in soil. These results indicated that the incorporation of rice straw derived biochar instead of rice straw could be a promising approach to controlling NH3 volatilization and improving rice yield.
Biochar Amendments to Tropical Paddy Soil Increase Rice Yields and Decrease N2O Emissions by Modifying the Genes Involved in Nitrogen Cycling

Abstract:Water management strategies are critical in regulating nitrous oxide (N2O) emissions from paddy soils under rice cultivation. Biochar is widely used as an amendment to decrease soil N2O emissions. However, the impacts of biochar amendment on N2O emissions under different water management strategies in paddy soils have not been investigated thoroughly, and the underlying mechanisms remain poorly understood. In particular, the effects of mid-season water drainage, a strategy used for water conservation, need to be better understood. In this study, a pot experiment was conducted including six treatments: alternating dry-wet conditions during the mid-season period without and with 2% (w/w) biochar (AWD1 and AWD2, respectively), continuous flooding during the mid-season period without (CF1) and with 2% (CF2) biochar, and regular mid-season drainage during the mid-season period without (CON1) and with 2% (CON2) biochar. All treatments received inorganic nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium fertilizers (NPK) administered in a split application. We found that fluxes of N2O emission peaked after the two fertilizers’ additions. No significant difference in the first N2O flux peak was found among different treatments. There also was no difference in the second N2O flux peak in both CF treatments, whereas biochar addition significantly decreased the second N2O flux peak in AWD2 and CON2 treatments. This was mainly due to increased nosZ gene copies and decreased ratios of denitrification and amoA genes to nosZ gene copies. Biochar amendments resulted in significant stimulation of nifH gene copies in the AWD2 treatment. Lastly, biochar increased rice yields in all treatments. Our study suggested that AWD2 was the optimal management strategy for mitigating N2O emissions and improving rice production in this tropical paddy soil.

Abstract:Manure application is a recommended method to improve soil quality and mitigate global warming via soil carbon (C) sequestration. However, such application can significantly increase ammonia (NH 3 ) volatilization loss and cause secondary environmental problems, such as acidification, eutrophication, and particulate matter formation. To investigate the potential of reducing NH 3 emissions in flooded rice paddies, three types of stabilized swine manure amendments (fresh, composted, and biochar) were applied at a rate of 12 Mg ha −1 (dry weight) under standard fertilization (N–P 2 O 5 –K 2 O = 90–45–57 kg ha −1 ), and NH 3 emission was characterized using the static chamber method. Regardless of manure management practices, NH 3 fluxes increased significantly immediately after application of an inorganic nitrogen (N) fertilizer (urea). The manure was applied completely as the basal fertilizer before rice transplanting, but the NH 3 emission rates increased more dramatically following urea application in the manure treatments. Fresh and composted manure applications significantly increased seasonal NH 3 volatilization losses compared to the control but the biochar did not. Compost manure significantly increased rice grain productivity owing to the higher N content, while fresh and biochar manures did not increase rice productivity because of fewer panicles per hill and fewer grains per panicle. Consequently, biochar application resulted in lower NH 3 flux intensity and seasonal NH 3 flux per grain yield, whereas fresh and compost manures substantially increased this intensity. Therefore, biochar manure may be a more reasonable organic amendment than fresh and composted manures for reducing NH 3 emission impacts on rice paddies.

Abstract:Biochar application to agricultural soil is an appealing approach to mitigate nitrous oxide (N2O) and methane (CH4) emissions. However, the underlying microbial mechanisms are unclear. In this study, a paddy soil slurry was incubated anaerobically for 14d with biochar amendments produced from rice straw at 300, 500, or 700°C (B300, B500, and B700) to study their influences on greenhouse gas emissions. Illumina sequencing was used to characterize shift of soil bacterial and archaeal community composition. After peaking at day 1, N2O emission then sharply decreased to low levels while CH4 started to emit at day 3 then continually increased with incubation. Compared to control soil (57.9mgkg-1 soil), B300, B500, and B700 amendments decreased N2O peak emission to 17.9, 1.28, and 0.59mgkg-1, mainly due to increased soil pH. In contrast, the amendments enhanced CH4 production from 58.2 to 93.4, 62.6, and 63.4mgkg-1 at day 14 due to increased soil dissolved organic carbon. Abundance of denitrifying bacteria (e.g., Bacilli, 7.07-13.6 vs. 16.9%) was reduced with biochar amendments, especially with B500 and B700, contributing to the decreased N2O emissions. However, larger pore size of B500 and B700 (surface area of 68.1 and 161m2g-1) than B300 (4.40m2g-1) favored electron transfer between bacteria and iron minerals, leading to increased abundance of iron-reducing bacteria, (e.g., Clostridia, 48.2-50.6 vs. 33.3%), which competed with methanogens to produce CH4, thereby leading to lower increase in CH4 emission. Biochar amendments with high pH and surface area might be effective to mitigate emission of both N2O and CH4 from paddy soil.

Citric acid modified biochar application at a low dosage can synchronically mitigate the nitrogenous gas pollutants emission from rice paddy soils

Abstract:Raw biochar with high pH possibly stimulated ammonia (NH3) volatilization in the agricultural soil. We hypothesized that the modified biochar (MBC) with low pH can synchronically decrease the NH3 and nitrous oxide (N2O) losses. We performed a two-year experiment to clarify how citric acid MBC influence the NH3 volatilization and N2O emission as well as the underlying mechanisms. Two typical paddy soils, i.e., Hydragric Anthrosol and Haplic Acrisol, receiving equal urea N with 240 kg ha-1 but varied rates of MBC with 0, 5, 10, and 20 t ha-1 (named Urea, Urea + MBC5, Urea + MBC10, and Urea + MBC20, respectively) were studied. The results showed that MBC-amended treatments effectively mitigated the NH3 volatilization from Hydragric Anthrosol and Haplic Acrisol by 29.6%-57.9% and 30.5%-62.4% in 2017, and by 16.5%-21.0% and 24.5%-35.0% in 2018, respectively, compared to Urea treatment. In addition, significantly lower N2O emissions with averaged 38.3% and 43.1% in 2017, and 51.7% and 26.7% were recorded under Hydragric Anthrosol and Haplic Acrisol, respectively, following the MBC application (P < 0.05). Increased MBC addition performed higher efficacy on mitigating NH3 volatilization, particularly in the first rice season, while this "dosage effect" was not found for N2O reduction. Lowered pH in overlying water, enhanced adsorption of NH4+-N and its nitrification rate likely contributed to the lower NH3 volatilization as result of MBC addition. The nirS and nosZ gene copies were not changed by MBC, while the nirK gene copies were decreased as result of MBC amendment by 8.3%-25.2% under Hydragric Anthrosol and by 21.8%-24.9% under Haplic Acrisol. Consequent lower ratio of nirK/(nirS + nosZ) explained the mitigation effect of MBC on N2O emission. In conclusion, the present two-year study recommends that MBC applied at a low dosage can perform positive effect on controlling the nitrogenous gas pollutants from paddy soil.
Impact of Wheat Straw Biochar on Yield of Rice and Some Properties of Psammaquent and Plinthudult

Abstract:Agricultural organic matter is a major component of organic waste on earth that significantly contributes in environmental pollution. The conversion of organic waste into biochar and addition to soil is the recommended strategy to reduce the negative environmental effects of organic waste and to increase the soil fertility. Therefore, in this study, we evaluated the changes in nutrient concentrations, rice yield and microbial community structure in a Psammaquent and Plinthudult at harvest following incorporation of biochar derived from wheat straw. Wheat straw biochar generated at 300-500 degrees C under oxygen limited conditions was applied, in a greenhouse experiment to a Psammaquent and Plinthudult at a rate of 3% weight/weight (w/w). The biochar addition to both types of soil significantly increased the soil pH from 4.2 to 6.2 and 4.7 to 6.7, total nitrogen by 135 and 37%, and organic carbon by 90 and 80%, in the Psammaquent and Plinthudult, respectively as compared to the respective controls. The dissolved organic nitrogen (DON) was decreased by 24 and 15% and dissolved organic carbon (DOC) by 40 and 44% in Psammaquent and Plinthudult, respectively. The biochar decreased the concentrations of K leached by 24%, B by 25%, Cu by 80%, Mn by 37% and Zn by 33% in the Psammaquent and B by 50%, Cu by 60%, Fe by 43%, Mn by 69% and Zn by 83% in the Plinthudult as compared to the controls. The wheat straw biochar addition to two soils increased the accumulation of Mn, Mo, Na and Zn in both rice straw and grain and decreased the leaching of nutrients, organic carbon and nitrogen at rice harvest and increased the leaching of Ca, Na, and Mg in both Psammaquent and Plinthudult. The biochar increased the pH, TOC and nitrogen in both soils. The biochar significantly changed the PLFA concentration indicating different microbial community pattern in soils growing rice compared to their controls. Thus, the results indicated that wheat straw biochar increased the productivity of rice in the Plinthudult and Psammaquent.
Elevation of NO3−-N from Biochar Amendment Facilitates Mitigating Paddy CH4 Emission Stably over Seven Years

Abstract:Biochar application into paddy is an improved strategy for addressing methane (CH4) stimulation of straw biomass incorporation. Whereas, the differentiative patterns and mechanisms on CH4 emission of straw biomass and biochar after long years still need to be disentangled. Considering economic feasibility, a seven-year of field experiment was conducted to explore the long-term CH4 mitigation effect of annual low-rate biochar incorporation (RSC, 2.8 t ha(-1)), with annual rice straw incorporation (RS, 8 t ha(-1)) and control (CK, with no biochar or rice straw amendment incorporation) as a comparation. Results showed that RSC mitigated CH4 emission while RS stimulated CH4 significantly (p < 0.05) and stably over 7 experimental years compared with CK. RSC mitigated 14.8-46.7% of CH4 emission compared with CK. In comparison to RSC, RS increased 111-950.5% of CH4 emission during 7 field experimental years. On the 7th field experimental year, pH was significantly increased both in RS and RSC treatment (p < 0.05). RSC significantly (p < 0.05) increased soil nitrate (NO3--N) compared with RS while RS significantly (p < 0.05) increased dissolved carbon (DOC) compared to RSC. Soil NO3--N inhibition on methanogens and promotion on methanotrophs activities were verified by laboratory experiment, while soil pH and DOC mainly promoted methanogens abundance. Significantly (p < 0.05) increased DOC and soil pH enhanced methanogens growth and stimulated CH4 emission in RS treatment. Higher soil NO3--N content in RSC than CK and RS contributed to CH4 mitigation. Soil NO3--N and DOC were identified as the key factors differentiating CH4 emission patterns of RS and RSC in 2019. Collectively, soil NO3--N impacts on CH4 flux provide new ideas for prolonged effect of biochar amendment on CH4 mitigation after years.

Abstract:Hydrochar (HC), an environment-friendly material, enhances soil carbon sequestration and mitigate greenhouse gases (GHGs) emissions in croplands. In this study, the water-washed HC (WW-HC) was applied to paddy soil to investigate effects on nitrous oxide (N2O) and methane (CH4) emissions during rice growth period. Four treatments, namely control (without N fertilizer and WW-HC), N fertilizer (WW-HC00), N fertilizer with 0.5 wt% WW-HC (WW-HC05) and N fertilizer with 1.5 wt% WW-HC (WW-HC15), were established. Results showed the WW-HC addition reduced N2O and CH4 emissions, global warming potential (GWP) and greenhouse gas intensity (GHGI) during the growing season. Moreover, the WW-HC application reduced N2O cumulative emission (P < 0.05) (by 28.6% and 23.8% for WW-HC05 and WW-HC15, respectively). It was mainly due to the reduced ratio of (nirK + nirS) to nosZ under WW-HC15 (P < 0.05). Compared with WW-HC00, the WW-HC05 reduced CH4 cumulative emissions by 14.8%, while the WW-HC15 increased by 9.7%. This might be ascribed to the significantly reduced expression of the methanogenic mcrA gene and ratio of mcrA to pmoA by WW-HC (P < 0.05). The WW-HC05 amendment decreased GWP and GHGI by 18.6% and 32.5%, respectively. Furthermore, the WW-HC application greatly improved nitrogen use efficiency by 116-145% compared with the control. Our study indicates the WW-HC application is a promising GHGs mitigation practice in paddy fields.

Abstract:It is of great concern that nitrogen-rich (N-rich) wastewater irrigation increases ammonia (NH3) volatilization from rice (Oryza sativa L.) paddy fields. A pilot-scale field trial was conducted to study the impact of different management practices on reducing NH3 volatilization and their subsequent impacts on nitrous oxide (N2O) emission from a paddy field irrigated with N-rich wastewater generated by livestock production and supplemented with urea N fertilizer. A total of 225 kg N ha−1 combined with urea and N-rich wastewater was split into basal, the first, and second supplementary applications for the following five treatments: urea N mixed with controlled-release N fertilizer (BBF), floating duckweed (FDW), biochar alone (BC), biochar mixed with calcium superphosphate (BCP), and control with no amendment (CK). Results showed that each treatment had similar pattern of NH3 volatilization and N2O emission after N application. Treatments of BBF, FDW, and BCP effectively reduced NH3 losses by 22.8, 55.2, and 39.2 %, respectively, compared with the CK. BBF treatment decreased NH3 volatilization after the first supplementary N fertilization; BCP treatment reduced NH3 volatilization after the basal fertilization; and FDW treatment reduced NH3 volatilization after both the basal and first supplementary fertilization. Besides controlling the NH3 volatilization, BCP treatment also reduced 19.5 % of N2O loss. However, BC alone suppressed N2O emission by 24.3 %, but did not reduce NH3 loss. The findings can practically guide farmers to choose the appropriate management practices in improving N use efficiency and minimizing the impact of fertilization on environmental quality.

Mitigating Methane Emission Via Annual Biochar Amendment Pyrolyzed with Rice Straw from the Same Paddy Field

Abstract:To develop an economic and sustainable biochar application strategy for mitigating methane emission from paddy fields, a four-year field experiment was conducted to compare two biochar amendment methods. The annual low (AL) rate pyrolyzed biochar returning method used the same amount of biochar as was harvested from rice straw in the field, 2.8 t ha(-1) yr(-1). The high single (HS) biochar returning method consisted of a single application of 22.5 t ha(-1) biochar only in the first year, 2015. Our results showed that the AL biochar returning strategy prevailed over the HS strategy in mitigating methane emission from paddy fields. On average, AL and HS could reduce methane emissions by 41% and 38.25% in four years, respectively. Methane accumulation per unit rice production was 45.8% and 43.1% in AL and HS, respectively. AL showed a stable effect on mitigating methane emission over four successive years, which resulted from the continuously increasing methanotrophs due to annual fresh biochar application. Aged biochar weakened the promotion of methanotrophs, leading to lower methane reduction rates in HS than in AL in the 4 years. Our results indicate that AL is a highly sustainable strategy for methane mitigation in paddy fields due to its high efficiency, practical operation, and economical acceptance. (C) 2020 Elsevier B.V. Abstract:Biochar addition can reduce methane (CH4) emissions from paddy soils while the mechanisms involved are not entirely clear. Here, we studied the effect of biochar addition on CH4 emissions, and the abundance and community composition of methanogens and methanotrophs over two rice cultivation seasons. The experiment had the following five treatments: control (CK), chemical fertilizer application only (BC0), and 0.5% (w/w) (BC1), 1% (BC2), and 2% of biochar applied with chemical fertilizers (BC3). The season-wide CH4 emissions were decreased (P < 0.05) by 22.2-95.7% in biochar application compared with BC0 in the two rice seasons (2017 and 2018). In 2017, biochar application decreased methanogenic archaea (mcrA) but increased methanotrophic bacteria (pmoA) abundances, and decreased the ratio of mcrA/pmoA, as compared with BC0 (P < 0.05). In 2018, the abundance of mcrA was lower in BC2 and BC3 than in BC0 (P < 0.05) but was not different between BC0 and BC1, and the abundance of pmoA was lower in BC1, BC2 and BC3 than in BC0 (P < 0.05). The CH4 emissions were positively related to abundances of the mcrA gene (P< 0.01) but not to that of the pmoA gene in two rice seasons. Rice grain yield was increased by 62.2-94.1% in biochar addition treatments compared with BC0 in the first year (P< 0.01) and by 29.9-37.6% in BC2 and BC3 compared with BC0 in the second year (P < 0.05). Abstract:Biogas production causes vast amounts of biogas slurry (BS). Application of BS to croplands can substitute chemical fertilizers while result in higher ammonia emissions. Tremendous variation of ammonium concentration in different BSs induces imprecise substitution, while concentrated BS holds higher and more stable ammonium. Pyroligneous liquor, an acidic aqueous liquid from biochar production, can be used with concentrated BS to reduce ammonia emission. However, the effects of combining concentrated BS with pyroligneous liquor on ammonia emission and soil (nitrogen) N transformation have been poorly reported. In this study, a field experiment applying concentrated BS only, or combining with 5 %, 10 %, and 20 % pyroligneous liquor (v/v) for substituting 60 % N of single rice cultivation was conducted by contrast with chemical fertilization. The results showed that substituting chemical N fertilizers with concentrated BS increased 24.6 % ammonia emission. In comparison, applying 5 %, 10 %, and 20 % pyroligneous liquor with concentrated BS reduced 4.9 %, 20.3 %, and 24.4 % ammonia emissions, respectively. Applying concentrated BS with more pyroligneous liquor preserved higher ammonium and dissolved organic carbon in floodwater, and induced higher nitrate concentration after fertilization. Whereas soil ammonium and nitrate contents were decreased along with more pyroligneous liquor application before and after the topdressing and exhibited sustainable release until rice harvest. In comparison, the soil N mineralization and nitrification rates were occasionally elevated, while the activities of soil urease, protease, nitrate reductase, and nitrite reductase had multiple responses. Applying concentrated BS only, or combining with 5 %, 10, and 20 % pyroligneous liquor, have little effect on soil basic properties but inorganic N. In summary, applying concentrated BS with >10 % pyroligneous liquor could preserve more N with sustainable release and potentially lower N loss to the atmosphere, and we proposed that applying 13.5 % pyroligneous liquor in concentrated BS could achieve maximum soil fertility and minimum ammonia emission.

Abstract: Paddy fields are regarded as an important anthropogenic source of atmospheric CH4 and play a significant role in global warming. Biochar refers to the highly aromatic substance remaining after thermal decomposition of biomass under complete or partial exclusion of oxygen for the purpose of creating a soil amendment. Its application is widely accepted to be a promising method to decrease CH4 emission from paddy soil. The balance between CH4 production and consumption ultimately determines whether a paddy soil is a net source or a sink of atmospheric CH4. However, there are few studies concerning the effects of biochar amendments on methanogenic and methane oxidation activities in paddy soils. Meanwhile, the feedstock used for biochar production has a substantial impact on the physiochemical characteristics of biochar. These characteristics are then related to the actual environmental function in soil, such as response to methanogenic and methane oxidation activities. In this study, a one-year field experiment was conducted to gain insight into the potential effects of bamboo biochar (BB) and rice straw biochar (SB) amendments at the rate of 22.5 t/hm2 on the methanogenic and methane oxidation activities in rice rhizosphere soil. The SB had more hydrophilic groups such as carboxyl and hydroxyl, higher pH and electrical conductivity (EC) values and lower bulk density than the BB did. Soil water content, pH, and EC values in the SB treatments were greater than those in the BB treatments. Generally, urea application did not have notable impact on soil water content, pH and EC values. Compared with the control treatment, methanogenic activitiy in the rhizosphere soil at the rice seedling stage was significantly increased with the SB amendment. There was no significant difference in the methanogenic activity between the control and the BB treatments during the whole period of rice growth. Differences in the labile components and ash contents between the two biochars may have resulted in the divergence of methanogenic microorganisms in the rice rhizosphere soil, and consequently the difference in methanogenic activity between the BB and SB treatments. The methane oxidation activity in the rhizosphere soil increased with the addition of BB and SB during the rice growth period. Nevertheless, statistical analysis indicated that significant differences were only observed in the SB treatment at the seedling and maturing stages of rice development. In comparison with the BB treatment, SB application was more effective in increase of soil pH and EC values, soil K and P contents, and soil aeration, which may have contributed to the significant improvement of methane oxidation activity in rhizosphere soil with SB application. The general trends of biochar impact on methanogenic and methane oxidation activities were not observably changed with urea application. In conclusion, SB could be used to reduce paddy soil CH4 emission through increasing soil methane oxidation activity.

Abstract:Hydrothermal carbonization is an emerging and efficient technology for utilizing wet waste. However, the utilization of hydrothermal carbonization aqueous phase (HAP), a carbon-rich liquid product containing massive quantities of nutrient elements, has been largely unexplored. In this study, HAP produced by hydrothermal carbonization of sewage sludge (SHAP) and pig manure (PHAP) at 180 °C and 260 °C was applied as a substitute for partial (9.1–55.9%) urea in rice paddy field. Results showed that HAP increased the abundance of humic acid-like substances and microbial metabolic by-products in soil dissolved organic matter (DOM) by 3.3–7.2 times and 42.1–101.6%, respectively, compared to the control treatment without HAP addition (CK). Meanwhile, HAP significantly increased soil fluorescence and humification index of soil DOM by 28.5–41.9% and 12.3–26.8%, respectively, in comparison with CK. Soil fertilized with SHAP260 had greater mineral nitrogen, total organic carbon and Olsen-P compared to CK. HAP increased the grain N uptake by 34.0–58.8% and rice yield by 6.3–34.1% with essential amino acids in grains improved by 8.6–20.9% compared to CK. This study stated that HAP as a substitute of partial urea for rice paddy return has positive effects on soil fertility and grain yields.
