Abstract:The thermal conversion properties of crude oil play a crucial role in the efficient extraction of oil and subsequent combustion propulsion during in situ combustion (ISC). Instead, the thermal conversion of crude oil varies greatly among conditions owing to clay minerals influence within the reservoir. In this work, we comprehensively investigated the combined impact of clay minerals on the thermal conversion behavior of oxidized oil and pyrolyzed oil. The results indicated that different clay minerals demonstrated discrepancies in their catalytic activity toward oxidized oil. Among the clay minerals, kaolinite had a measurably influence on the relative reaction rate of 100 °C oxidized oil, furthermore, it would facilitate the oxidized oil fuel deposition. Montmorillonite played a catalytic role in elevating the thermal conversion of 120 °C oxidized oil and 350 °C pyrolyzed oil, promoting easier high temperature oxidation of 120 °C oxidized oil. Illite as well increased comparative reaction rate of the HTO phase of 140 °C oxidized oil. Moreover, the activation energy of the reaction in different temperature intervals decreased due to the existence of clay minerals, with chlorite exerting the most pronounced effect on the activation energy in the 100–350 °C temperature interval. The powerful adsorption and acidic catalytic interaction of clay minerals were particularly efficient, with pyrolytic reforming of pyrolyzed oil containing montmorillonite being the optimum, which facilitated the volatilization and oxidation reactions of light fraction under low temperature conditions. The thermal catalytic contribution of clay minerals in the storage formation should be taken into account in ISC field applications.
