Abstract:Each distributor between categories enriched over a small quantaloid Q gives rise to two adjunctions between the categories of contravariant and covariant presheaves, and hence to two monads. These two adjunctions are respectively generalizations of Isbell adjunctions and Kan extensions in category theory. It is proved that these two processes are functorial with infomorphisms playing as morphisms between distributors; and that the free cocompletion functor of Q-categories factors through both of these functors.

Abstract:This dissertation is devoted to a study of adjunctions concerning categories enriched over a quantaloid Q (or Q-categories for short), with the following types of adjunctions involved: (1) adjoint functors between Q-categories; (2) adjoint distributors between Q-categories; (3) adjoint functors between categories consisting of Q-categories. For a small quantaloid Q and a distributor between Q-categories, two adjunctions between the Q-categories of contravariant and covariant presheaves are presented. These adjunctions respectively extend the fundamental construction of Isbell adjunctions and Kan extensions in category theory, so, they will be called the Isbell adjunction and Kan adjunction, respectively. The functoriality of these constructions is the central topic of this dissertation. In order to achieve this, infomorphisms between distributors are introduced to organize distributors (as objects) into a category. Then we proceed as follows: first, the Isbell adjunction and Kan adjunction associated with each distributor between Q-categories give rise to two monads, which are respectively (covariant) functorial and contravariant functorial from the category of distributors and infomorphisms to the category of Q-closure spaces; second, it is shown that the assignments of a distributor to the fixed points of the two monads are respectively (covariant) functorial and contravariant functorial from the category of distributors and infomorphisms to that of skeletal complete Q-categories and left adjoint functors. As consequences of the functoriality of the above processes, three factorizations of the free cocompletion functor of Q-categories are presented. Finally, as applications, the theory of formal concept analysis and that of rough sets are extended to theories based on fuzzy relations between fuzzy sets.

Abstract:The Cellularization Principle states that under rather weak conditions a Quillen adjunction of stable model categories induces a Quillen equivalence on cellularizations provided there is a derived equivalence on cells. We give a proof together with a range of examples. The main result here was originally presented as an appendix of <a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="1101.2511" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/1101.2511">arXiv:1101.2511</a>. However, the Cellularization Principle has many other applications which are explored here. The material in <a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="1101.2511v3" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/1101.2511v3">arXiv:1101.2511v3</a> will be revised to refer to this paper.

Abstract:It is shown that every two-variable adjunction in categories enriched in a commutative quantale serves as a base for constructing Isbell adjunctions between functor categories, and Kan adjunctions are precisely Isbell adjunctions constructed from suitable associated two-variable adjunctions. Representation theorems are established for fixed points of these adjunctions.

Abstract:In fairly elementary terms this paper presents, and expands upon, a recent result by Garner by which the notion of topologicity of a concrete functor is subsumed under the concept of total cocompleteness of enriched category theory. Motivated by some key results of the 1970s, the paper develops all needed ingredients from the theory of quantaloids in order to place essential results of categorical topology into the context of quantaloid-enriched category theory, a field that previously drew its motivation and applications from other domains, such as quantum logic and sheaf theory.

Abstract:A Quillen model structure on the category Gray-Cat of Gray-categories is described, for which the weak equivalences are the triequivalences. It is shown to restrict to the full subcategory Gray-Gpd of Gray-groupoids. This is used to provide a functorial and model-theoretic proof of the unpublished theorem of Joyal and Tierney that Gray-groupoids model homotopy 3-types. The model structure on Gray-Cat is conjectured to be Quillen equivalent to a model structure on the category Tricat of tricategories and strict homomorphisms of tricategories.

Abstract:We establish a Quillen equivalence between the Kan-Quillen model structure and a model structure, derived from a cubical model of homotopy type theory, on the category of cartesian cubical sets with one connection. We thereby identify a second model structure which both constructively models homotopy type theory and presents infinity-groupoids, the first example being the equivariant cartesian model of Awodey-Cavallo-Coquand-Riehl-Sattler.

Abstract:We describe a generalization of Gabriel and Zisman's Calculus of Fractions to quasicategories, showing that the two essentially coincide for the nerve of a category. We then prove that the marked Ex-functor can be used to compute the localization of a marked quasicategory satisfying our condition and that the appropriate (co)completeness properties of the quasicategory carry over to its localization. Finally, we present an application of these results to discrete homotopy theory.

Abstract:An important example of a model category is the category of unbounded chain complexes of R-modules, which has as its homotopy category the derived category of the ring R. This example shows that traditional homological algebra is encompassed by Quillen's homotopical algebra. The goal of this paper is to show that more general forms of homological algebra also fit into Quillen's framework. Specifically, any set of objects in a complete and cocomplete abelian category A generates a projective class on A, which is exactly the information needed to do homological algebra in A. The main result is that if the generating objects are ``small'' in an appropriate sense, then the category of chain complexes of objects of A has a model category structure which reflects the homological algebra of the projective class. The motivation for this work is the construction of the ``pure derived category'' of a ring R. Finally, we explain how the category of simplicial objects in a possibly non-abelian category can be equipped with a model category structure reflecting a given projective class.

Abstract:We develop a constructive model of homotopy type theory in a Quillen model category that classically presents the usual homotopy theory of spaces. Our model is based on presheaves over the cartesian cube category, a well-behaved Eilenberg-Zilber category. The key innovation is an additional equivariance condition in the specification of the cubical Kan fibrations, which can be described as the pullback of an interval-based class of uniform fibrations in the category of symmetric sequences of cubical sets. The main technical results in the development of our model have been formalized in a computer proof assistant.

Generalizing quasi-categories via model structures on simplicial sets

Abstract:We use Cisinski's machinery to construct and study model structures on the category of simplicial sets whose classes of fibrant objects generalize quasi-categories. We identify a lifting condition which captures the homotopical behavior of quasi-categories without the algebraic aspects and show that there is a model structure whose fibrant objects are precisely those which satisfy this condition. We also identify a localization of this model structure whose fibrant objects satisfy a "special horn lifting" condition similar to the one satisfied by quasi-categories. This special horn model structure leads to a conjecture characterization of the bijective-on-0-simplices trivial cofibrations of the Joyal model structure. We also discuss how these model structures all relate to one another and to the minimal model structure.

Abstract:We lay the foundations for a theory of quasi-categories in a monoidal category $\mathcal{V}$ replacing $\mathrm{Set}$, aimed at realising weak enrichment in the category $S\mathcal{V}$ of simplicial objects in $\mathcal{V}$. To accomodate non-cartesian monoidal products, we make use of an ambient category $S_{\otimes}\mathcal{V}$ of templicial - or 'tensor-simplicial' - objects in $\mathcal{V}$, which are certain colax monoidal functors following Leinster. Inspired by the description of the categorification functor due to Dugger and Spivak, we construct a templicial analogue of the homotopy coherent nerve functor which goes from $S\mathcal{V}$-enriched categories to templicial objects. We show that an $S\mathcal{V}$-enriched category whose underlying simplicial category is locally Kan, is turned into a quasi-category in $\mathcal{V}$ by this nerve functor.

Model Category Structure on Simplicial Algebras via Dold-Kan Correspondence

Abstract:This expository article sets forth a self-contained and purely algebraic proof of a deep result of Quillen stating that the category of simplicial commutative algebras over a commutative ring is a model category. This is accomplished by starting from the model structure on the category of connective chain complexes, transferring it to the category of simplicial modules via Dold-Kan Correspondence, and further transferring it to the category of simplicial commutative algebras through Quillen-Kan Transfer Machine. The subtlety of overcoming the acyclicity condition is addressed by introducing and studying the shuffle product of connective chain complexes, establishing a variant of Eilenberg-Zilber Theorem, and carefully scrutinizing the subtle structures under study.
