Abstract:We prove that there is an adjunction between what we call étale topological categories and restriction quantal frames that leads to an adjunction with a category of complete restriction monoids. This generalizes the adjunction between étale groupoids and pseudogroups.

Abstract:Each distributor between categories enriched over a small quantaloid Q gives rise to two adjunctions between the categories of contravariant and covariant presheaves, and hence to two monads. These two adjunctions are respectively generalizations of Isbell adjunctions and Kan extensions in category theory. It is proved that these two processes are functorial with infomorphisms playing as morphisms between distributors; and that the free cocompletion functor of Q-categories factors through both of these functors.

Abstract:This dissertation is devoted to a study of adjunctions concerning categories enriched over a quantaloid Q (or Q-categories for short), with the following types of adjunctions involved: (1) adjoint functors between Q-categories; (2) adjoint distributors between Q-categories; (3) adjoint functors between categories consisting of Q-categories. For a small quantaloid Q and a distributor between Q-categories, two adjunctions between the Q-categories of contravariant and covariant presheaves are presented. These adjunctions respectively extend the fundamental construction of Isbell adjunctions and Kan extensions in category theory, so, they will be called the Isbell adjunction and Kan adjunction, respectively. The functoriality of these constructions is the central topic of this dissertation. In order to achieve this, infomorphisms between distributors are introduced to organize distributors (as objects) into a category. Then we proceed as follows: first, the Isbell adjunction and Kan adjunction associated with each distributor between Q-categories give rise to two monads, which are respectively (covariant) functorial and contravariant functorial from the category of distributors and infomorphisms to the category of Q-closure spaces; second, it is shown that the assignments of a distributor to the fixed points of the two monads are respectively (covariant) functorial and contravariant functorial from the category of distributors and infomorphisms to that of skeletal complete Q-categories and left adjoint functors. As consequences of the functoriality of the above processes, three factorizations of the free cocompletion functor of Q-categories are presented. Finally, as applications, the theory of formal concept analysis and that of rough sets are extended to theories based on fuzzy relations between fuzzy sets.

Abstract:With quantaloids carefully constructed from multi-adjoint frames, it is shown that multi-adjoint concept lattices, multi-adjoint property-oriented concept lattices and multi-adjoint object-oriented concept lattices are derivable from Isbell adjunctions, Kan adjunctions and dual Kan adjunctions between quantaloid-enriched categories, respectively.

Abstract:In fairly elementary terms this paper presents, and expands upon, a recent result by Garner by which the notion of topologicity of a concrete functor is subsumed under the concept of total cocompleteness of enriched category theory. Motivated by some key results of the 1970s, the paper develops all needed ingredients from the theory of quantaloids in order to place essential results of categorical topology into the context of quantaloid-enriched category theory, a field that previously drew its motivation and applications from other domains, such as quantum logic and sheaf theory.

Abstract:In this work, we prove a generalization of Quillen's Theorem A to 2-categories equipped with a special set of morphisms which we think of as weak equivalences, providing sufficient conditions for a 2-functor to induce an equivalence on $(\infty,1)$-localizations. When restricted to 1-categories with all morphisms marked, our theorem retrieves the classical Theorem A of Quillen. We additionally state and provide evidence for a new conjecture: the cofinality conjecture, which describes the relation between a conjectural theory of marked $(\infty,2)$-colimits and our generalization of Theorem A.

Abstract:Lawvere's algebraic theories, or Lawvere theories, underpin a categorical approach to general algebra, and Lawvere's adjunction between semantics and algebraic structure leads to an equivalence between Lawvere theories and finitary monads on the category of sets. Several authors have transported these ideas to a variety of settings, including contexts of category theory enriched in a symmetric monoidal closed category. In this paper, we develop a general axiomatic framework for enriched structure-semantics adjunctions and monad-theory equivalences for subcategories of arities. Not only do we establish a simultaneous generalization of the monad-theory equivalences previously developed in the settings of Lawvere (1963), Linton (1966), Dubuc (1970), Borceux-Day (1980), Power (1999), Nishizawa-Power (2009), Lack-Rosický (2011), Lucyshyn-Wright (2016), and Bourke-Garner (2019), but also we establish a structure-semantics theorem that generalizes those given in the first four of these works while applying also to the remaining five, for which such a result has not previously been developed. Furthermore, we employ our axiomatic framework to establish broad new classes of examples of enriched monad-theory equivalences and structure-semantics adjunctions for subcategories of arities enriched in locally bounded closed categories, including various convenient closed categories that are relevant in topology and analysis and need not be locally presentable.

Abstract:We define the full and reduced non-self-adjoint operator algebras associated with étale categories and restriction semigroups, answering a question posed by Kudryavtseva and Lawson in [22]. Moreover, we define the semicrossed product algebra of an étale action of a restriction semigroup on a C ⁎ -algebra, which turns out to be the key point when connecting the operator algebra of a restriction semigroup with the operator algebra of its associated étale category. We also prove that in the particular cases of étale groupoids and inverse semigroups our operator algebras coincide with the C ⁎ -algebras of the referred objects.

Abstract:For a composition-closed and pullback-stable class S of morphisms in a category C containing all isomorphisms, we form the category Span(C,S) of S-spans (s,f) in C with first "leg" s lying in S, and give an alternative construction of its quotient category C[S^{-1}] of S-fractions. Instead of trying to turn S-morphisms "directly" into isomorphisms, we turn them separately into retractions and into sections in a universal manner, thus obtaining the quotient categories Retr( C,S) and Sect(C,S). The fraction category C[S^{-1}] is their largest joint quotient category. Without confining S to be a class of monomorphisms of C, we show that Sect(C,S) admits a quotient category, Par(C,S), whose name is justified by two facts. On one hand, for S a class of monomorphisms in C, it returns the category of S-spans in C, also called S-partial maps in this case; on the other hand, we prove that Par(C,S) is a split restriction category (in the sense of Cockett and Lack). A further quotient construction produces even a range category (in the sense of Cockett, Guo and Hofstra), RaPar(C,S), which is still large enough to admit C[S^{-1}] as its quotient. Both, Par and RaPar, are the left adjoints of global 2-adjunctions. When restricting these to their "fixed objects", one obtains precisely the 2-equivalences by which their name givers characterized restriction and range categories. Hence, both Par(C,S)$ and RaPar(C,S may be naturally presented as Par(D,T)$ and RaPa(D,T), respectively, where now T is a class of monomorphisms in D. In summary, while there is no {\em a priori} need for the exclusive consideration of classes of monomorphisms, one may resort to them naturally

Abstract:In this paper we explain the relationship between Frobenius objects in monoidal categories and adjunctions in 2-categories. In particular, we show that every Frobenius object in a monoidal category M arises from an ambijunction (simultaneous left and right adjoints) in some 2-category D into which M fully and faithfully embeds. Since a 2D topological quantum field theory is equivalent to a commutative Frobenius algebra, this result also shows that every 2D TQFT is obtained from an ambijunction in some 2-category. Our theorem is proved by extending the theory of adjoint monads to the context of an arbitrary 2-category and utilizing the free completion under Eilenberg-Moore objects. We then categorify this theorem by replacing the monoidal category M with a semistrict monoidal 2-category M, and replacing the 2-category D into which it embeds by a semistrict 3-category. To state this more powerful result, we must first define the notion of a `Frobenius pseudomonoid', which categorifies that of a Frobenius object. We then define the notion of a `pseudo ambijunction', categorifying that of an ambijunction. In each case, the idea is that all the usual axioms now hold only up to coherent isomorphism. Finally, we show that every Frobenius pseudomonoid in a semistrict monoidal 2-category arises from a pseudo ambijunction in some semistrict 3-category.

Abstract:We show that an $\infty$-category $\mathcal{M}$ with a closed left action of a monoidal $\infty$-category $\mathcal{V}$ is completely determined by the $\mathcal{V}$-valued graph of morphism objects equipped with the structure of a $\mathcal{V}$-enrichment in the sense of Gepner-Haugseng. We prove a similar result when $\mathcal{M}$ is a $\mathcal{V}$-enriched $\infty$-category in the sense of Lurie, an operadic generalization of the notion of $\infty$-category with closed left action. Precisely, we prove that sending a $\mathcal{V}$-enriched $\infty$-category in the sense of Lurie to the $\mathcal{V}$-valued graph of morphism objects refines to an equivalence $\chi$ between the $\infty$-category of $\mathcal{V}$-enriched $\infty$-categories in the sense of Lurie and of Gepner-Haugseng. Moreover if $\mathcal{V}$ is a presentably $\mathbb{E}_{\mathrm{k+1}}$-monoidal $\infty$-category for $1 \leq k \leq \infty$, we prove that $\chi$ restricts to a lax $\mathbb{E}_{\mathrm{k}}$-monoidal functor between the $\infty$-category of left $\mathcal{V}$-modules in $\mathrm{Pr}^L$, the symmetric monoidal $\infty$-category of presentable $\infty$-categories, endowed with the relative tensor product, and the tensor product of $\mathcal{V}$-enriched $\infty$-categories of Gepner-Haugseng. As an application of our theory we construct a lax symmetric monoidal embedding of the $\infty$-category of small stable $\infty$-categories into the $\infty$-category of small spectral $\infty$-categories. As a second application we produce a Yoneda-embedding for Lurie's notion of enriched $\infty$-categories.

Grothendieck prelopologies: towards a closed monoidal sheaf category

Abstract:In this paper, we present a generalization of Grothendieck pretopologies -- suited for semicartesian categories with equalizers $C$ -- leading to a closed monoidal category of sheaves, instead of closed cartesian category. This is proved through a different sheafification process, which is the left adjoint functor of the suitable inclusion functor but does not preserve all finite limits. If the monoidal structure in $C$ is given by the categorical product, all constructions coincide with those for Grothendieck toposes. The motivation for such generalization stems from a certain notion of sheaves on quantales that does not form a topos.

Abstract:Functors involved in Fontaine equivalences decompose as extension of scalars and taking of invariants between full subcategories of modules over a topological ring equipped with semi-linear continuous action of a topological monoid. We give a general framework for these categories and the functors between them. We define the categories of étale projective $\mathcal{S}$-modules over $R$ to englobe categories that will correspond by Fontaine-type equivalences to finite free representations of a group. We study their preservation by base change, taking of invariants by a normal submonoid of $\mathcal{S}$ and coinduction to a bigger monoid. We define and study categories corresponding to finite type continuous representations over $\mathbb{Z}_p$ through the notions of finite projective $(r,\mu)$-dévissage and of topological étale $\mathcal{S}$-modules over $R$.

Abstract:We prove a number of results of the following common flavor: for a category $\mathcal{C}$ of topological or uniform spaces with all manner of other properties of common interest (separation / completeness / compactness axioms), a group (or monoid) $\mathbb{G}$ equipped with various types of topological structure (topologies, uniformities) and the corresponding category $\mathcal{C}^{\mathbb{G}}$ of appropriately compatible $\mathbb{G}$-flows in $\mathcal{C}$, the forgetful functor $\mathcal{C}^{\mathbb{G}}\to \mathcal{C}$ is monadic. In all cases of interest the domain category $\mathcal{C}^{\mathbb{G}}$ is also cocomplete, so that results on adjunction lifts along monadic functors apply to provide equivariant completion and/or compactification functors. This recovers, unifies and generalizes a number of such results in the literature due to de Vries, Mart'yanov and others on existence of equivariant compactifications / completions and cocompleteness of flow categories.

Abstract:We develop a theory of adjunctions in semigroup categories, i.e. monoidal categories without a unit object. We show that a rigid semigroup category is promonoidal, and thus one can naturally adjoin a unit object to it. This extends the previous results of Houston in the symmetric case, and addresses a question of his. It also extends the results in the non-symmetric case with additional finiteness assumptions, obtained by Benson-Etingof-Ostrik, Coulembier and Ko-Mazorchuk-Zhang. We give an interpretation of these results using comonad cohomology, and, in the absence of finiteness conditions, using enriched traces of monoidal categories. As an application of our results, we give a characterization of finite tensor categories in terms of the finitary 2-representation theory of Mazorchuk-Miemietz.

Abstract:Lawvere's generalised the notion of complete metric space to the field of enriched categories: an enriched category is said to be Cauchy-complete if every left adjoint bimodule into it is represented by an enriched functor. Looking at this definition from a logical standpoint, regarding bimodules as an abstraction of relations and functors as an abstraction of functions, Cauchy-completeness resembles a formulation of the rule of unique choice. In this paper, we make this analogy precise, using the language of relational doctrines, a categorical tool that provides a functorial description of the calculus of relations, in the same way Lawvere's hyperdoctrines give a functorial description of predicate logic. Given a relational doctrine, we define Cauchy-complete objects as those objects of the domain category satisfying the rule of unique choice. Then, we present a universal construction that completes a relational doctrine with the rule of unique choice, that is, producing a new relational doctrine where all objects are Cauchy-complete. We also introduce relational doctrines with singleton objects and show that these have the minimal structure needed to build the reflector of the full subcategory of its domain on Cauchy-complete objects. The main result is that this reflector exists if and only if the relational doctrine has singleton objects and this happens if and only if its restriction to Cauchy-complete objects is equivalent to its completion with the rule of unique choice. We support our results with many examples, also falling outside the scope of standard doctrines, such as complete metric spaces, Banach spaces and compact Hausdorff spaces in the general context of monoidal topology, which are all shown to be Cauchy-complete objects for appropriate relational doctrines.
