Abstract:Several authors have shown that there exist nonsolvable Bieberbach groups of dimension 15. In this paper, we show that this is, in fact, a minimal dimension for such groups.

Abstract:Let $G$ be a finite group and let $\mathcal{M}$ be a set of maximal subgroups of $G$. We say that $\mathcal{M}$ is irredundant if the intersection of the subgroups in $\mathcal{M}$ is not equal to the intersection of any proper subset. The minimal dimension of $G$, denoted ${\rm Mindim}(G)$, is the minimal size of a maximal irredundant set of maximal subgroups of $G$. This invariant was recently introduced by Garonzi and Lucchini and they computed the minimal dimension of the alternating groups. In this paper, we prove that ${\rm Mindim}(G) \leqslant 3$ for all finite simple groups, which is best possible, and we compute the exact value for all non-classical simple groups. We also introduce and study two closely related invariants denoted by $\alpha(G)$ and $\beta(G)$. Here $\alpha(G)$ (respectively $\beta(G)$) is the minimal size of a set of maximal subgroups (respectively, conjugate maximal subgroups) of $G$ whose intersection coincides with the Frattini subgroup of $G.$ Evidently, ${\rm Mindim}(G) \leqslant \alpha(G) \leqslant \beta(G)$. For a simple group $G$ we show that $\beta(G) \leqslant 4$ and $\beta(G) - \alpha(G) \leqslant 1$, and both upper bounds are best possible.

Abstract:We show that a non-solvable, torsion-free, virtually solvable group $S$ must have Hirsch length $h(S)\geq10$. If $h(S)<14$ then $A_5$ is the only simple factor. If $S$ is virtually nilpotent and $h(S)\leq14$ then its Fitting subgroup has nilpotency class $\leq3$. (There are virtually abelian examples with $h(S)=15$, and this is known to be best possible for such groups.)

Abstract:In this article, by studying the Bernstein degrees and Goldie rank polynomials, we establish a comparison between the irreducible representations of G = GL n （C） possessing the minimal Gelfand-Kirillov dimension and those induced from finite-dimensional representations of the maximal parabolic subgroup of G of type（n-1, 1）. We give the transition matrix between the two bases for the corresponding coherent families.

Abstract:We show that for any $n\geq5$ there exist connected algebraic subgroups in the Cremona group $\mathrm{Bir}(\mathbb{P}^n)$ that are not contained in any maximal connected algebraic subgroup. Our approach exploits the existence of stably rational, non-rational threefolds.

Abstract:This paper focuses on tools for constructing 4-manifolds that have fundamental group $G$ isomorphic to a right-angled Artin group and that are also minimal, in the sense that they minimize $b_2(M)$, the dimension of $H_2(M;\mathbb{Q})$. For a finitely presented group $G$, define $h(G) = \min\{ b_2(M) | M \in \mathcal M(G) \}$. In this paper, we explore the ways in which we can bound $h(G)$ from below using group cohomology and the tools necessary to build 4-manifolds that realize these lower bounds. We give solutions for right-angled Artin groups, or RAAGs, when the graph associated to $G$ has no 4-cliques, and further we reduce this problem to the case when the graph is connected and contains only 4-cliques. We then give solutions for many infinite families of RAAGs and provide a conjecture to the solution for all RAAGs.

Abstract:Let n≥3 . In this paper, we show that for any abelian subgroup G of Sn the crystallographic group Bn/[Pn,Pn] has Bieberbach subgroups ΓG with holonomy group G . Using this approach, we obtain an explicit description of the holonomy representation of the Bieberbach group ΓG . As an application, when the holonomy group is cyclic of odd order, we study the holonomy representation of ΓG and determine the existence of Anosov diffeomorphisms and Kähler geometry of the flat manifold XΓG with fundamental group the Bieberbach group ΓG≤Bn/[Pn,Pn] .

Abstract:Let $E$ be an elliptic curve over a number field $L$ and for a finite set $S$ of primes, let $\rho_{E,S} : {\rm Gal}(\overline{L}/L) \to {\rm GL}_{2}(\mathbb{Z}_{S})$ be the $S$-adic Galois representation. If $L \cap \mathbb{Q}(\zeta_{n}) = \mathbb{Q}$ for all positive integers $n$ whose prime factors are in $S$, then $\det \rho_{E,S} : {\rm Gal}(\overline{L}/L) \to \mathbb{Z}_{S}^{\times}$ is surjective. We say that a finite index subgroup $H \subseteq {\rm GL}_{2}(\mathbb{Z}_{S})$ is minimal if $\det : H \to \mathbb{Z}_{S}^{\times}$ is surjective, but $\det : K \to \mathbb{Z}_{S}^{\times}$ is not surjective for any proper closed subgroup $K$ of $H$. We show that there are no minimal subgroups of ${\rm GL}_{2}(\mathbb{Z}_{S})$ unless $S = \{ 2 \}$, while minimal subgroups of ${\rm GL}_{2}(\mathbb{Z}_{2})$ are plentiful. We give models for all the genus $0$ modular curves associated to minimal subgroups of ${\rm GL}_{2}(\mathbb{Z}_{2})$, and construct an infinite family of elliptic curves over imaginary quadratic fields with bad reduction only at $2$ and with minimal $2$-adic image.

Abstract:By [6], a minimal group $G$ is called $z$-minimal if $G/Z(G)$ is minimal. In this paper, we present the $z$-Minimality Criterion for dense subgroups with some applications to topological matrix groups. For a locally compact group $G$, let $\operatorname{Inn}(G)$ be the group of all inner automorphisms of $G,$ endowed with the Birkhoff topology. Using a theorem by Goto [14], we obtain our main result which asserts that if $G$ is a connected Lie group and $H\in\{G/Z(G), \operatorname{Inn}(G)\},$ then $H$ is minimal if and only if it is centre-free and topologically isomorphic to $\operatorname{Inn}(G/Z(G)).$ In particular, if $G$ is a connected Lie group with discrete centre, then $\operatorname{Inn}(G)$ is minimal. We prove that a connected locally compact nilpotent group is $z$-minimal if and only if it is compact abelian. In contrast, we show that there exists a connected metabelian $z$-minimal Lie group that is neither compact nor abelian.

Abstract:Given a group and an integer , we consider the family of all virtually abelian subgroups of of at most . In this article, we prove that for each the Bredon cohomology, with respect to the family , of a free abelian group with is nontrivial in dimension ; this answers a question of Corob Cook et al. (Homology Homotopy Appl. 19(2) (2017), 83–87, Question 2.7). As an application, we compute the minimal dimension of a classifying space for the family for braid groups, right-angled Artin groups, and graphs of groups whose vertex groups are infinite finitely generated virtually abelian groups, for all . The main tools that we use are the Mayer–Vietoris sequence for Bredon cohomology, Bass–Serre theory, and the Lück–Weiermann construction.

Abstract:We classify the possible types of minimal operations above an arbitrary permutation group. Above the trivial group, a theorem of Rosenberg yields that there are five types of minimal operations. We show that above any non-trivial permutation group there are at most four such types. Indeed, except above Boolean groups acting freely on a set, there are only three. In particular, this is the case for oligomorphic permutation groups, for which we improve a result of Bodirsky and Chen by showing one of the types in their classification does not exist. Building on these results, we answer three questions of Bodirsky that were previously open.

Abstract:We construct a connected finite loop space of rank 66 and dimension 1254 whose rational cohomology is not isomorphic as a graded vector space to the rational cohomology of any compact Lie group, hence providing a counterexample to a classical conjecture. Aided by machine calculation we verify that our counterexample is minimal, i.e., that any finite loop space of rank less than 66 is in fact rationally equivalent to a compact Lie group, extending the classical known bound of 5.

Abstract:In 1989, Nešetřil and Pudlák posed the following challenging question: Do planar posets have bounded Boolean dimension? We show that every poset with a planar cover graph and a unique minimal element has Boolean dimension at most $13$. As a consequence, we are able to show that there is a reachability labeling scheme with labels consisting of $\mathcal{O}(\log n)$ bits for planar digraphs with a single source. The best known scheme for general planar digraphs uses labels with $\mathcal{O}(\log^2 n)$ bits [Thorup JACM 2004], and it remains open to determine whether a scheme using labels with $\mathcal{O}(\log n)$ bits exists. The Boolean dimension result is proved in tandem with a second result showing that the dimension of a poset with a planar cover graph and a unique minimal element is bounded by a linear function of its standard example number. However, one of the major challenges in dimension theory is to determine whether dimension is bounded in terms of standard example number for all posets with planar cover graphs.

Coloring minimal Cayley graphs

Abstract:We show that any minimal Cayley graph of a (finitely generated) generalized dihedral or nilpotent group has chromatic number at most 3, while 4 colors are sometimes necessary for soluble groups. On the other hand we construct graphs of unbounded chromatic number that admit a proper edge coloring such that each cycle has some color at least twice. The latter disproves a conjecture of Babai'78 that would have implied that all minimal Cayley graphs have bounded chromatic number -- a problem that remains open.

On 3-nondegenerate CR manifolds in dimension 7 (II): the intransitive case

Abstract:We investigate 3-nondegenerate CR structures in the lowest possible dimension 7 and show that 8 is the maximal dimension for the Lie algebra of symmetries of such structures. The next possible symmetry dimension is 6, and for the automorphism groups the dimension 7 is also realizable. This part (II) is devoted to the case where the symmetry algebra acts intransitively. We use various methods to bound its dimension and demonstrate the existence of infinitely many non-equivalent submaximally symmetric models. Summarizing, we get a stronger form of Beloshapka's conjecture on the symmetry dimension of hypersurfaces in $\mathbb{C}^4$.
