Abstract:Let G be a finite group and assume that a group of automorphisms A is acting on G such that A and G have coprime orders. We prove that the fact of imposing specific properties on the second maximal A -invariant subgroups of G determines that G is either soluble or isomorphic to a few non-soluble groups such as PSL(2, 5) or SL(2, 5).

Abstract:The structures of finite groups having at most two conjugacy classes of non-trivial cyclic sub-groups are completely characterized.It is proven that a finite non-solvable group G having at most four conjugacy classes of non-trivial cyclic subgroups must be isomorphic to PSL2 (r ),where r =5,7,8,9.

Abstract:We show that a non-solvable, torsion-free, virtually solvable group $S$ must have Hirsch length $h(S)\geq10$. If $h(S)<14$ then $A_5$ is the only simple factor. If $S$ is virtually nilpotent and $h(S)\leq14$ then its Fitting subgroup has nilpotency class $\leq3$. (There are virtually abelian examples with $h(S)=15$, and this is known to be best possible for such groups.)

Abstract:A classical theorem on character degrees states that if a finite group has fewer than four character degrees, then the group is solvable. We prove a corresponding result on character values by showing that if a finite group has fewer than eight character values in its character table, then the group is solvable. This confirms a conjecture of T. Sakurai. We also classify non-solvable groups with exactly eight character values.

Abstract:This article focuses on the study of zero-sum invariants of finite non-abelian groups. We address two main problems: the first centers on the ordered Davenport constant and the second on Gao's constant. We establish a connection between the ordered Davenport constant and the small Davenport constant for a finite non-abelian group of even order, which in turn gives a relation with the Noether number. Additionally, we confirm a conjecture of Gao and Li for a non-abelian group of order $2p^{\alpha}$, where $p$ is a prime. Furthermore, we prove a conjecture that connects the ordered Davenport constant to the Loewy length for certain classes of finite $2$-groups.

Abstract:In this paper,we prove that a finite group with exactly two conjugacy classes of non-nilpotent maximal subgroups is solvable.Furthermore,we give an equivalent characterization of a finite non-solvable group with exactly two classes of non-nilpotent maximal subgroups of the same order.

Abstract:As an extension of Schmidt theorem,the following results are obtained:(1) A finite group with less than 3 classes of non-nilpotent proper subgroups of the same order is solvable;(2) G is a non-solvable group with exactly 3 classes of non-nilpotent proper subgroups of the same order if and only if G≌A_5 or G≌SL_2(5).Furthermore,non-solvable groups with at most 5 classes of non-trivial nilpotent subgroups of the same order and non-solvable groups with at most 9 classes of non-trivial subgroups of the same order are completely classified.

It is of interest to characterize the structure of [math] groups for [math]. The [math] groups for [math] have been investigated by several authors. In this paper, we give a complete characterization of [math] 2-groups by showing there are five classes of such groups which are nontrivial and nonabelian.

Abstract:Tools from number theory and algebra are very helpful in the study of some combinatorial problems. What is the smallest positive integer k such that an abelian group G can be irredundantly covered by k cosets of subgroups one of which has index n? We will talk about the solution to this combinatorial problem provided by G. Lettl and the speaker via characters of abelian groups and algebraic number theory. The Herzog-Schonheim conjecture asserts that if a group G is partitioned into k > 1 left cosets a1G1,... ,akGk then the indices (G : G1),... ,(G : Gk) cannot be distinct. We will also introduce the speaker's approach to the Herzog-Schonheim conjecture via analytic number theory and some combinatorial arguments. Some related conjectures will be also mentioned in the talk.

Abstract:In this note, it is shown that a finite group G is solvable if for each odd prime divisor p of |G|, |Irr(B0(G)2)∩Irr(B0(G)p)|≤2, where Irr(B0(G)p) is the set of complex irreducible characters of the principal p-block B0(G)p of G. Also, the structure of such groups is investigated. Examples show that the bound 2 is best possible.

Abstract:We prove that if $(H,G)$ is a small, $nm$-stable compact $G$-group, then $H$ is nilpotent-by-finite, and if additionally $\NM(H) \leq \omega$, then $H$ is abelian-by-finite. Both results are significant steps towards the proof of the conjecture that each small, $nm$-stable compact $G$-group is abelian-by-finite. We give examples of small, $nm$-stable compact $G$-groups of infinite ordinal $\NM$-rank, providing counter-examples to the $\NM$-gap conjecture.

Abstract:Given a finite group $G$, the solubilizer of an element $x$, denoted by $\Sol_G(x)$, is the set of all elements $y$ such that $\langle x, y\rangle$ is a soluble subgroup of $G$. In this paper, we provide a classification for all solubilizers of elements in minimal simple groups. We also examine these sets to explore their properties by discussing some computational methods and making some conjectures for further work.

Abstract:A characterization is given for the factorizations of almost simple groups with a solvable factor. It turns out that there are only several infinite families of these nontrivial factorizations, and an almost simple group with such a factorization cannot have socle exceptional Lie type or orthogonal of minus type. The characterization is then applied to study s s -arc-transitive Cayley graphs of solvable groups, leading to a striking corollary that, except for cycles, a non-bipartite connected 3 3 -arc-transitive Cayley graph of a finite solvable group is necessarily a normal cover of the Petersen graph or the Hoffman-Singleton graph.

On generalizations of Iwasawa's theorem

Abstract:Iwasawa's theorem indicates that a finite group $G$ is supersolvable if and only if all maximal chains of the identity in $G$ have the same length. As generalizations of Iwasawa's theorem, we provide some characterizations of the structure of a finite group $G$ in which all maximal chains of every minimal subgroup have the same length. Moreover, let $\delta(G)$ be the number of subgroups of $G$ all of whose maximal chains in $G$ do not have the same length, we prove that $G$ is a non-solvable group with $\delta(G)\leq 16$ if and only if $G\cong A_5$.

Abstract:Let $G$ be a finite group and let $\mathcal{M}$ be a set of maximal subgroups of $G$. We say that $\mathcal{M}$ is irredundant if the intersection of the subgroups in $\mathcal{M}$ is not equal to the intersection of any proper subset. The minimal dimension of $G$, denoted ${\rm Mindim}(G)$, is the minimal size of a maximal irredundant set of maximal subgroups of $G$. This invariant was recently introduced by Garonzi and Lucchini and they computed the minimal dimension of the alternating groups. In this paper, we prove that ${\rm Mindim}(G) \leqslant 3$ for all finite simple groups, which is best possible, and we compute the exact value for all non-classical simple groups. We also introduce and study two closely related invariants denoted by $\alpha(G)$ and $\beta(G)$. Here $\alpha(G)$ (respectively $\beta(G)$) is the minimal size of a set of maximal subgroups (respectively, conjugate maximal subgroups) of $G$ whose intersection coincides with the Frattini subgroup of $G.$ Evidently, ${\rm Mindim}(G) \leqslant \alpha(G) \leqslant \beta(G)$. For a simple group $G$ we show that $\beta(G) \leqslant 4$ and $\beta(G) - \alpha(G) \leqslant 1$, and both upper bounds are best possible.

Abstract:We construct two finite groups of size $2^{365}\cdot 3^{105}\cdot 7^{104}$: a solvable group $G$ and a non-solvable group $H$, such that for every integer $n$ the groups have the same number of elements of order $n$. This answers a question posed in 1987 by John G. Thompson.

Abstract:Two finite groups are said to have the same order type if for each positive integer $n$ both groups have the same number of elements of order $n$. In 1987 John G. Thompson asked if in this case the solvability of one group implies the solvability of the other group. In 2024 Pawel Piwek gave a negative example. He constructed two groups of order $2^{365}\cdot3^{105}\cdot7^{104}\approx7.3\cdot10^{247}$ of the same order type, where only one is solvable. In this note we produce a much smaller example of order $2^{13}\cdot3^4\cdot7^3=227598336$.
