Abstract:The 2019 Nobel Prize in Physics was awarded to P. James E. Peebles, Michel Mayor, and Didier Queloz for discoveries that have changed our perspective on the world we live in. Peebles’ research questions span across cosmology, from the cosmic microwave background (CMB) to studies of anisotropy and galaxy clustering to dark energy and quintessence. Mayor and Queloz discovered the first planet orbiting a Sun-like star – a hot, Jupiter-like planet that completes a single orbit in a manner of days. This paper describes the science behind the prize in the context of these scientists’ careers. A citation analysis of each laureate is presented, drawing on Web of Science and Scopus data, with network graphs.

Abstract:The 2019 Nobel Prize in Physics honors three pioneering scientists for their fundamental contributions to basic cosmic questions - Professor James Peebles (Princeton University), Michel Mayor (University of Geneva), and Didier Queloz (University of Geneva and the University of Cambridge) - "for contributions to our understanding of the evolution of the universe and Earth's place in the cosmos," with one half to James Peebles "for theoretical discoveries in physical cosmology," and the other half jointly to Michel Mayor and Didier Queloz "for the discovery of an exoplanet orbiting a solar-type star." Abstract:We analyze the Nobel prizes in physics for astrophysics and gravitation since the establishment of the prize and highlight the 2020 Nobel prize for black holes. In addition, we comment on the names that could have received the prize in astrophysics and gravitation, and draw attention to the individuals who made outstanding contributions to black hole physics and astrophysics and should be mentioned as possible and deserved recipients of the prize. We speculate about the branches of research in astrophysics and gravitation, with an emphasis on the latter, that can be contemplated in the future with a Nobel prize.

Abstract:This year’s Emerging Leader in Atomic Spectroscopy Award recipient is Eduardo Bolea-Fernández. For the past decade, Bolea-Fernández’s research has focused on the development of a newly introduced technique, termed tandem ICP-mass spectrometry (ICP-MS/MS), for ultra-trace elemental and isotopic analysis. He has also worked on the topic of high-precision isotopic analysis of mercury (Hg) using cold-vapor generation multi-collector ICP-MS instrumentation. His most recent work involves research in the context of single-event ICP-MS, a novel method of ICP-MS operation enabling the characterization of nanoparticles and individual cells. Moreover, he demonstrated for the first time ever that this approach can also be used for the characterization of microplastics by relying on their carbon content, a topic that is receiving significant attention.

Abstract:The 2023 Nobel Prize in Chemistry was awarded to Aleksey I. Ekimov (prize share 1/3), Louis E. Brus (prize share 1/3), and Moungi G. Bawendi (prize share 1/3) for groundbreaking inventions in the field of nanotechnology, i.e., for the discovery and synthesis of semiconductor nanocrystals, also termed quantum dots, that exhibit size-dependent physicochemical properties enabled by quantum size effects. This feature article summarizes the main milestones of the discoveries and developments of quantum dots that paved the road to their versatile applications in solid-state lighting, display technology, energy conversion, medical diagnostics, bioimaging, and image-guided surgery.

Abstract:Astronomy is not in the list of natural sciences aimed at by the Nobel awards. In spite of that, there were, throughout the 1930s until the early 1950s, effective moves by important scientists to distinguish Hubble with the Prize. A short report on these attempts is made as well as speculation on what would be the citation for the prize in view of the broad range of Hubble's scientific achievements. Within this context, the opportunity is also taken for publicizing the Crafoord Prize which does consider astronomy.
