Abstract:In the context of generalized descriptive set theory, we systematically compare and analyze various notions of Polish-like spaces and standard $\kappa$-Borel spaces for $\kappa$ an uncountable (regular) cardinal satisfying $\kappa^{<\kappa} = \kappa$. As a result, we obtain a solid framework where one can develop the theory in full generality. We also provide natural characterizations of the generalized Cantor and Baire spaces. Some of the results obtained considerably extend previous work from [Coskey-Schlicht 2016, Galeotti 2019, Luecke-Schlicht 2015], and answer some questions contained therein.

Abstract:We show that up to a null set, every infinite measure-preserving action of a locally compact Polish group can be turned into a continuous measure-preserving action on a locally compact Polish space where the underlying measure is Radon. We also investigate the distinction between spatial and boolean actions in the infinite measure-preserving setup. We finally obtain a streamlined proof of a recent result of Avraham-Re'em and Roy: Levy groups cannot admit nontrivial continous measure-preserving actions on Polish spaces when the measure is locally finite.

Formalizing Hyperspaces and Operations on Subsets of Polish spaces over Abstract Exact Real Numbers

Abstract:Building on our prior work on axiomatization of exact real computation by formalizing nondeterministic first-order partial computations over real and complex numbers in a constructive dependent type theory, we present a framework for certified computation on hyperspaces of subsets by formalizing various higher-order data types and operations. We first define open, closed, compact and overt subsets for generic spaces in an abstract topological way that allows short and elegant proofs with computational content coinciding with standard definitions in computable analysis and constructive mathematics. From these proofs we can extract programs for testing inclusion, overlapping of sets, et cetera. To enhance the efficiency of the extracted programs, we then focus on Polish spaces, where we give more efficient encodings based on metric properties of the space. As various computational properties depend on the continuity of the encoding functions, we introduce a nondeterministic version of a continuity principle which is natural in our formalization and valid under the standard type-2 realizability interpretation. Using this principle we further derive the computational equivalence between the generic and the metric encodings. Our theory is fully implemented in the Coq proof assistant. From proofs in this Coq formalization, we can extract certified programs for error-free operations on subsets. As an application, we provide a function that constructs fractals in Euclidean space, such as the Sierpinski triangle, from iterated function systems using the limit operation. The resulting programs can be used to draw such fractals up to any desired resolution.

Abstract:Let $\mathcal{L}$ be a first-order two-sorted language and consider a class of $\mathcal{L}$-structures of the form $\langle M, X \rangle$ where $M$ varies among structures of the first sort, while $X$ is fixed in the second sort, and it is assumed to be a compact Hausdorff space. When $X$ is a compact subset of the real line, one way to treat classes of this kind model-theoretically is via continuous-valued logic, as in [Ben Yaacov-Berenstein-Henson-Usvyatsov 2010]. Prior to that, Henson and Iovino proposed an approach based on the notion of positive formulas [Henson-Iovino 2002]. Their work is tailored to the model theory of Banach spaces. Here we show that a similar approach is possible for a more general class of models. We introduce suitable versions of elementarity, compactness, saturation, quantifier elimination and other basic tools, and we develop basic model theory.

Abstract:There are two probability monads defined on the category of Polish spaces depending upon whether one uses measurable functions or continuous functions for the morphisms. In the first case the monad is called the $\mathcal{G}$-monad on standard Borel spaces, while the latter case yields the $\mathscr{P}$-monad on the category of Polish spaces. Given an arbitrary Polish space $X$ with a superconvex space structure we show there exist a $\mathcal{G}$-algebra ($\mathscr{P}$-algebra) on $X$ when $X$ satisfies the geometric convex space-metric space compatability condition $d_X(p x + (1-p) z, p y + (1-p) z) \le p\, d_X(x,y)$ for all points $x,y,z$ in $X$ and all $p \in [0,1]$. Every $\mathscr{P}$-algebra also specifies a $\mathcal{G}$-algebra but $\mathcal{G}$-algebras also arise from a discrete, and hence also mixed type, convex space structure on $X$ provided the discrete convex space structure is totally ordered as a poset. Those spaces which satisfy the compatability condition have a coseparator which allows us to establish the existence of the $\mathcal{G}$-algebras and $\mathscr{P}$-algebras. These algebras are the expectation operators $\mathcal{G}X \xrightarrow{\mathbb{E}_{\bullet}(\mathbf{1}_X)} X$ which come in two versions, measurable and continuous.

Abstract:We extend the Becker--Kechris topological realization and change-of-topology theorems for Polish group actions in several directions. For Polish group actions, we prove a single result that implies the original Becker--Kechris theorems, as well as Sami's and Hjorth's sharpenings adapted levelwise to the Borel hierarchy; automatic continuity of Borel actions via homeomorphisms; and the equivalence of "potentially open" versus "orbitwise open" Borel sets. We also characterize "potentially open" $n$-ary relations, thus yielding a topological realization theorem for invariant Borel first-order structures. We then generalize to groupoid actions, and prove a result subsuming Lupini's Becker--Kechris-type theorems for open Polish groupoids, newly adapted to the Borel hierarchy, as well as topological realizations of actions on fiberwise topological bundles and bundles of first-order structures. Our proof method is new even in the classical case of Polish groups, and is based entirely on formal algebraic properties of category quantifiers; in particular, we make no use of either metrizability or the strong Choquet game. Consequently, our proofs work equally well in the non-Hausdorff context, for open quasi-Polish groupoids, and more generally in the point-free context, for open localic groupoids.

Borsik's properties of topological spaces and their applications

Abstract:Let X be an uncountable Polish space. Lubica Hola showed recently that there are 2^continuum many quasi-continuous real valued functions defined on the uncountable Polish space that are not Borel measurable. Inspired by Hola's result, we are extending it in two directions. First, we prove that the same conclusion holds when X is an uncountable Polish space and Y is any Hausdorff space with |Y|>1 then the family of all non-Borel measurable quasi-continuous functions has cardinality at least 2^continuum. Secondly, we show that the family of quasi-continuous non Borel functions may contain big algebraic structures.

Probability Logic for Harsanyi Type Spaces

Abstract:Probability logic has contributed to significant developments in belief types for game-theoretical economics. We present a new probability logic for Harsanyi Type spaces, show its completeness, and prove both a de-nesting property and a unique extension theorem. We then prove that multi-agent interactive epistemology has greater complexity than its single-agent counterpart by showing that if the probability indices of the belief language are restricted to a finite set of rationals and there are finitely many propositional letters, then the canonical space for probabilistic beliefs with one agent is finite while the canonical one with at least two agents has the cardinality of the continuum. Finally, we generalize the three notions of definability in multimodal logics to logics of probabilistic belief and knowledge, namely implicit definability, reducibility, and explicit definability. We find that S5-knowledge can be implicitly defined by probabilistic belief but not reduced to it and hence is not explicitly definable by probabilistic belief.

Abstract:A display of a topological group G on a Banach space X is a topological isomorphism of G with the isometry group Isom(X,||.||) for some equivalent norm ||.|| on X, where the latter group is equipped with the strong operator topology. Displays of Polish groups on separable real spaces are studied. It is proved that any closed subgroup of the infinite symmetric group S_\infty containing a non-trivial central involution admits a display on any of the classical spaces c0, C([0,1]), lp and Lp for 1 <=p <\infty. Also, for any Polsih group G, there exists a separable space X on which {-1,1} x G has a display.

Polish topologies on groups of non-singular transformations

Abstract:In this paper, we prove several results concerning Polish group topologies on groups of non-singular transformation. We first prove that the group of measure-preserving transformations of the real line whose support has finite measure carries no Polish group topology. We then characterize the Borel $\sigma$-finite measures $\lambda$ on a standard Borel space for which the group of $\lambda$-preserving transformations has the automatic continuity property. We finally show that the natural Polish topology on the group of all non-singular transformations is actually its only Polish group topology.

Abstract:In this paper we further develop the theory of canonical approximations of Polishable subgroups of Polish groups, building on previous work of Solecki and Farah--Solecki. In particular, we obtain a characterization of such canonical approximations in terms of their Borel complexity class. As an application we provide a complete list of all the possible Borel complexity classes of Polishable subgroups of Polish groups or, equivalently, of the ranges of continuous group homomorphisms between Polish groups. We also provide a complete list of all the possible Borel complexity classes of the ranges of: continuous group homomorphisms between non-Archimedean Polish groups; continuous linear maps between separable Fr\'{e}chet spaces; continuous linear maps between separable Banach spaces.

Abstract:We give strong necessary conditions on the admissibility of a Polish group topology for an arbitrary graph product of groups $G(\Gamma, G_a)$, and use them to give a characterization modulo a finite set of nodes. As a corollary, we give a complete characterization in case all the factor groups $G_a$ are countable.

Abstract:For each ordinal $\alpha<\omega_1$, we introduce the class of $\alpha$-balanced Polish groups. These classes form a hierarchy that completely stratifies the space between the class of Polish groups admitting a two-side-invariant metric (TSI) and the class of Polish groups admitting a complete left-invariant metric (CLI). We establish various closure properties, provide connections to model theory, and we develop a boundedness principle for CLI groups by showing that $\alpha$-balancedness is an initial segment of a regular coanalytic rank. In the spirit of Hjorth's turbulence theory we also introduce "generic $\alpha$-unbalancedness": a new dynamical condition for Polish $G$-spaces which serves as an obstruction to classification by actions of $\alpha$-balanced Polish groups. We use this to provide, for each $\alpha<\omega_1$, an action of an $\alpha$-balanced Polish group whose orbit equivalence relation is strongly generically ergodic against actions of any $\beta$-balanced Polish group with $\beta<\alpha$.

Poissonian Actions of Polish Groups

Abstract:We define and study Poissonian actions of Polish groups as a framework to Poisson suspensions, characterize them spectrally, and provide a complete characterization of their ergodicity. We further construct 'spatial' Poissonian actions, answering partially a question of Glasner, Tsirelson & Weiss about Lévy groups. We also construct for every diffeomorphism group an ergodic free spatial probability preserving actions. This constitutes a new class of Polish groups admitting non-essentially countable orbit equivalence relations, obtaining progress on a problem of Kechris.

Abstract:Generalizing Christensen's notion of a Haar-null set and Darji's notion of a Haar-meager set, we introduce and study the notion of a Haar-$\mathcal I$ set in a Polish group. Here $\mathcal I$ is an ideal of subsets of some compact metrizable space $K$. A Borel subset $B\subset X$ of a Polish group $X$ is called Haar-$\mathcal I$ if there exists a continuous map $f:K\to X$ such that $f^{-1}(B+x)\in\mathcal I$ for all $x\in X$. Moreover, $B$ is generically Haar-$\mathcal I$ if the set of witness functions $\{f\in C(K,X):\forall x\in X\;\;f^{-1}(B+x)\in\mathcal I\}$ is comeager in the function space $C(K,X)$. We study (generically) Haar-$\mathcal I$ sets in Polish groups for many concrete and abstract ideals $\mathcal I$, and construct the corresponding distinguishing examples. We prove some results on Borel hull of Haar-$\mathcal I$ sets, generalizing results of Solecki, Elekes, Vidnyánszky, Doležal, Vlasǎk on Borel hulls of Haar-null and Haar-meager sets. Also we establish various Steinhaus properties of the families of (generically) Haar-$\mathcal I$ sets in Polish groups for various ideals $\mathcal I$.
