Abstract:A variation of the Scott analysis of countable structures is applied to actions of non-Archimedean TSI Polish groups acting continuously on a Polish spaces. We give results on the potential Borel complexity spectrum of such groups, and define orbit equivalence relations that are universal for each Borel complexity class. We also identify an obstruction to classifiability by actions of such groups, namely generic ergodicity with respect to $E_\infty$, which we apply to Clemens-Coskey jumps of countable Borel equivalence relations. Finally, we characterize the equivalence relations that are both Borel-reducible to $=^+$ and classifiable by non-Archimedean TSI Polish groups, extending a result of Ding and Gao. In the process, several tools are developed in the Borel reducibility theory of orbit equivalence relations which are likely to be of independent interest.

Abstract:In this paper we further develop the theory of canonical approximations of Polishable subgroups of Polish groups, building on previous work of Solecki and Farah--Solecki. In particular, we obtain a characterization of such canonical approximations in terms of their Borel complexity class. As an application we provide a complete list of all the possible Borel complexity classes of Polishable subgroups of Polish groups or, equivalently, of the ranges of continuous group homomorphisms between Polish groups. We also provide a complete list of all the possible Borel complexity classes of the ranges of: continuous group homomorphisms between non-Archimedean Polish groups; continuous linear maps between separable Fr\'{e}chet spaces; continuous linear maps between separable Banach spaces.

Abstract:We show that up to a null set, every infinite measure-preserving action of a locally compact Polish group can be turned into a continuous measure-preserving action on a locally compact Polish space where the underlying measure is Radon. We also investigate the distinction between spatial and boolean actions in the infinite measure-preserving setup. We finally obtain a streamlined proof of a recent result of Avraham-Re'em and Roy: Levy groups cannot admit nontrivial continous measure-preserving actions on Polish spaces when the measure is locally finite.

Structural, point-free, non-Hausdorff topological realization of Borel groupoid actions

Abstract:We extend the Becker--Kechris topological realization and change-of-topology theorems for Polish group actions in several directions. For Polish group actions, we prove a single result that implies the original Becker--Kechris theorems, as well as Sami's and Hjorth's sharpenings adapted levelwise to the Borel hierarchy; automatic continuity of Borel actions via homeomorphisms; and the equivalence of "potentially open" versus "orbitwise open" Borel sets. We also characterize "potentially open" $n$-ary relations, thus yielding a topological realization theorem for invariant Borel first-order structures. We then generalize to groupoid actions, and prove a result subsuming Lupini's Becker--Kechris-type theorems for open Polish groupoids, newly adapted to the Borel hierarchy, as well as topological realizations of actions on fiberwise topological bundles and bundles of first-order structures. Our proof method is new even in the classical case of Polish groups, and is based entirely on formal algebraic properties of category quantifiers; in particular, we make no use of either metrizability or the strong Choquet game. Consequently, our proofs work equally well in the non-Hausdorff context, for open quasi-Polish groupoids, and more generally in the point-free context, for open localic groupoids.

Poissonian Actions of Polish Groups

Abstract:We define and study Poissonian actions of Polish groups as a framework to Poisson suspensions, characterize them spectrally, and provide a complete characterization of their ergodicity. We further construct 'spatial' Poissonian actions, answering partially a question of Glasner, Tsirelson & Weiss about Lévy groups. We also construct for every diffeomorphism group an ergodic free spatial probability preserving actions. This constitutes a new class of Polish groups admitting non-essentially countable orbit equivalence relations, obtaining progress on a problem of Kechris.

Classification Strength of Polish Groups I: Involving $S_\infty$

Abstract:In recent years, much work has been done to measure and compare the complexity of orbit equivalence relations, especially for certain classes of Polish groups. We start by introducing some language to organize this previous work, namely the notion of classification strength of Polish groups. Broadly speaking, a Polish group $G$ has stronger classification strength than $H$ if every orbit equivalence relation induced by a continuous action of $H$ on a Polish space can be "emulated" by such an action of $G$ in the sense of Borel reduction. Among the non-Archimedean Polish groups, the groups with the highest classification strength are those that involve $S_\infty$, the Polish group of permutations of a countably-infinite set. We prove that several properties, including a weakening of the disjoint amalgamation in Fraïssé theory, a weakening of the existence of an absolute set of generating indiscernibles, and not having ordinal rank for a particular coanalytic rank function, are all equivalent to a non-Archimedean Polish group involving $S_\infty$. Furthermore, we show the equivalence relation $=^+$, which is a relatively simple benchmark equivalence relation in the theory of Borel reducibility, can only be classified by such groups that involve $S_\infty$.

Abstract:We establish results connecting the uniform Liouville property of group actions on the classes of a countable Borel equivalence relation with amenability of this equivalence relation. We also study extensions of Kesten's theorem to certain classes of topological groups and prove a version of this theorem for amenable SIN groups. Furthermore, we discuss relationship between generalizations of Kesten's theorem and anticoncentration inequalities for the inverted orbits of random walks on the classes of an amenable equivalence relation. This allows us to construct an amenable Polish group that does not satisfy the limit conditions in combinatorial extensions of Kesten's theorem.

Abstract:We extend the calculations of the spin alignments of vector mesons in $e^+e^-$ annihilation in a recent Rapid Communication to deeply inelastic lepton-nucleon scatterings. We present the results for different mesons in the current fragmentation regions of $\mu^- N$$ \to$$ \mu^- VX$ at high energies and $\nu_\mu N $$\to$$ \mu^- VX$ at both high and low energies. We also present the predictions for $\nu_\mu N$$ \to$$ \mu^- VX$ at NOMAD energies in the target fragmentation region using a valence quark model.

On dense orbits in the space of subequivalence relations

Abstract:We first explain how to endow the space of subequivalence relations of any non-singular countable equivalence relation with a Polish topology, extending the framework of Kechris' recent monograph on subequivalence relations of probability measure-preserving (p.m.p.) countable equivalence relations. We then restrict to p.m.p. equivalence relations and discuss dense orbits therein for the natural action of the full group and of the automorphism group of the relation. Our main result is a characterization of the subequivalence relations having a dense orbit in the space of subequivalence relations of the ergodic hyperfinite p.m.p. equivalence relation. We also show that in this setup, all full groups orbits are meager. We finally provide a few Borel complexity calculations of natural subsets in spaces of subequivalence relations using a natural metric we call the uniform metric. This answers some questions from an earlier version of Kechris' monograph.

Abstract:We give strong necessary conditions on the admissibility of a Polish group topology for an arbitrary graph product of groups $G(\Gamma, G_a)$, and use them to give a characterization modulo a finite set of nodes. As a corollary, we give a complete characterization in case all the factor groups $G_a$ are countable.

Abstract:Generalizing Christensen's notion of a Haar-null set and Darji's notion of a Haar-meager set, we introduce and study the notion of a Haar-$\mathcal I$ set in a Polish group. Here $\mathcal I$ is an ideal of subsets of some compact metrizable space $K$. A Borel subset $B\subset X$ of a Polish group $X$ is called Haar-$\mathcal I$ if there exists a continuous map $f:K\to X$ such that $f^{-1}(B+x)\in\mathcal I$ for all $x\in X$. Moreover, $B$ is generically Haar-$\mathcal I$ if the set of witness functions $\{f\in C(K,X):\forall x\in X\;\;f^{-1}(B+x)\in\mathcal I\}$ is comeager in the function space $C(K,X)$. We study (generically) Haar-$\mathcal I$ sets in Polish groups for many concrete and abstract ideals $\mathcal I$, and construct the corresponding distinguishing examples. We prove some results on Borel hull of Haar-$\mathcal I$ sets, generalizing results of Solecki, Elekes, Vidnyánszky, Doležal, Vlasǎk on Borel hulls of Haar-null and Haar-meager sets. Also we establish various Steinhaus properties of the families of (generically) Haar-$\mathcal I$ sets in Polish groups for various ideals $\mathcal I$.

Key subgroups in the Polish group of all automorphisms of the rational circle

Abstract:Extending some results of a joint work with E. Glasner (2021) we continue to study the Polish group $G:=\mathrm{Aut}(\mathbb{Q}_0)$ of all circular order preserving permutations of $\mathbb{Q}_0$ with the pointwise topology, where $\mathbb{Q}_0$ is the rational discrete circle. We show, among others, that certain extremely amenable subgroups $H$ of $G:=\mathrm{Aut}(\mathbb{Q}_0)$ are inj-key but not co-minimal in $G$. This counterexample answers a question from a joint work with M. Shlossberg (2024) and inspired by a question proposed by V. Pestov about Polish groups $G$ with metrizable universal minimal $G$-flow $M(G)$. It is an open problem to study Pestov's question in its full generality.

Abstract:Let $G$ be a closed permutation group on a countably infinite set $\Omega$, which acts transitively but not highly transitively. If $G$ is oligomorphic, has no algebraicity and weakly eliminates imaginaries, we prove that any probability measure preserving ergodic action $G\curvearrowright (X,\mu)$ is either essentially free or essentially transitive. As this stabilizers rigidity result concerns a class of non locally compact Polish groups, our methods of proof drastically differ from that of similar results in the realm of locally compact groups. We bring the notion of dissociation from exchangeability theory in the context of stabilizers rigidity by proving that if $G\lneq\mathrm{Sym}(\Omega)$ is a transitive, proper, closed subgroup, which has no algebraicity and weakly eliminates imaginaries, then any dissociated probability measure preserving action of $G$ is either essentially free or essentially transitive. A key notion that we develop in our approach is that of invariant random expansions, which are $G$-invariant probability measures on the space of expansions of the canonical (model theoretic) structure associated with $G$. We also initiate the study of invariant random subgroups for Polish groups and prove that - although the result for p.m.p. ergodic actions fails for the group $\mathrm{Sym}(\Omega)$ of all permutations of $\Omega$ - any ergodic invariant random subgroup of $\mathrm{Sym}(\Omega)$ is essentially transitive.

Amenable group actions on $L_p$ lattices

Abstract:A result by Ornstein and Weiss states that a free and measure-preserving action of an amenable group on a probability space yields a decomposition of the space in disjoint images, up to a small error, analogous to the one given by the Rokhlin lemma in the case of a single transformation. We generalise this result to non-singular actions, and use it to prove that the theory of an action by automorphisms of an amenable group on a Banach $L_p$ lattice admits a model companion, which is stable and has quantifier elimination.

Abstract:In the context of generalized descriptive set theory, we systematically compare and analyze various notions of Polish-like spaces and standard $\kappa$-Borel spaces for $\kappa$ an uncountable (regular) cardinal satisfying $\kappa^{<\kappa} = \kappa$. As a result, we obtain a solid framework where one can develop the theory in full generality. We also provide natural characterizations of the generalized Cantor and Baire spaces. Some of the results obtained considerably extend previous work from [Coskey-Schlicht 2016, Galeotti 2019, Luecke-Schlicht 2015], and answer some questions contained therein.

Abstract:A Polish group is surjectively universal if it can be continuously homomorphically mapped onto every Polish group. Making use of a type of new metrics on free groups \cite{DG}, we prove the existence of surjectively universal Polish groups, answering in the positive a question of Kechris. In fact, we give several examples of surjectively universal Polish groups. We find a sufficient condition to guarantee that the new metrics on free groups can be computed directly. We also compare this condition with CLI groups.
