Abstract:With the development of nanotechnology, thermoelectric materials with complex heterogeneous nanostructure offer a promising approach to improve the thermoelectric performance. In this work, SnSe/SnS hetero-nanosheet was tuned by the epitaxial growth of SnSe on the few layers of SnS nanosheets. The heterojunction interface can optimize the carrier/phonon transport behavior by energy filtering effect and scattering the phonon in multiple scales. Compared with pristine SnSe, the power factor of SnSe/SnS hetero-nanosheet increases from 2.2[Formula: see text][Formula: see text]V/cmK2 to 3.21[Formula: see text][Formula: see text]V/cmK2 at 773[Formula: see text]K, whereas the thermal conductivity decreases significantly from 0.65[Formula: see text]W[Formula: see text][Formula: see text][Formula: see text]m[Formula: see text] to 0.48[Formula: see text]W[Formula: see text][Formula: see text][Formula: see text]m[Formula: see text] at 773[Formula: see text]K. The maximum ZT of 0.5 is obtained at 773[Formula: see text]K in the SnSe/SnS hetero-nanosheets, which is 89% higher than pristine SnSe. This approach is proved to be a promising strategy to design high performance thermoelectric materials.
Synthesis of SnSe nanobelts and the enhanced thermoelectric performance in its hot-pressed bulk composite

Abstract:Layer-structured SnSe is a promising thermoelectric material with a record high dimensionless figure of merit zT in its single-crystalline form along its b axis. However, the thermoelectric performance of polycrystalline SnSe significantly degrades due to the degenerated isotropic electrical and thermal conductivity. In this work, we successfully synthesized high-quality SnSe single crystalline nanobelts with growth direction along the b axis through solvothermal technique. The pure phase and homogeneous composition distribution were observed in the SnSe nanobelts. The lower thermal conductivity compared to its single crystals in the SnSe nanobelt bulk material was observed with the decreased electrical conductivity as can be expected. The anisotropic thermoelectric transports in the bulk SnSe material composed by hot pressed nanobelts were investigated and a high zT value of ~0.83 along the in-plane direction at 803K were obtained, which is 60% increase compared with that for the previous SnSe polycrystalline samples. The present results demonstrate the great potential to obtain higher zT value in SnSe polycrystalline materials through a synergic nanostructuring and boundary engineering strategy.
Enhancement of Thermoelectric Performance of Layered SnSe2 by Synergistic Modulation of Carrier Concentration and Suppression of Lattice Thermal Conductivity

Abstract:Eco-friendly and low-cost layered SnSe2-based materials have been attracting great attention in the thermoelectric field for their intrinsically low thermal conductivity. In this work, we applied AgCl as Cl-dopant and formed Ag-rich precipitates in SnSe2 polycrystals, and their thermoelectric properties were investigated. The results demonstrate that Cl was artificially incorporated into SnSe2 by the substitution of Se atoms, playing as donor centers and thus increasing the carrier concentration by 2 orders of magnitude, leading to a tremendous improvement of the electrical conductivity and power factor. However, Ag atoms hardly enter into the Sn lattice sites and brought about the generation of Ag-rich precipitates. The complicated microstructures with multiple types of defects, such as point defects, boundaries, dislocations, and so on, result in a relatively low lattice thermal conductivity in the AgCl-introduced SnSe2 samples. Additionally, the anisotropic electrical and thermal transport properties were investigated, and the results show that higher ZT values were obtained along the pressing direction in these textured samples because of the significantly suppressed lattice thermal conductivity caused by the enhanced phonon scattering via the interior van der Waals layers. Ultimately, a maximum ZT value of 0.35 was realized at 400 degrees C in the polycrystalline SnSe2 with introduction of 11 mol % AgCl, which is nearly 3 times higher than that value of the pristine counterpart. It demonstrates that the combined effects of Cl-doping, Ag-rich precipitates, and texturing could effectively enhance the ZT value for polycrystalline SnSe2.

Abstract:Owing to its high cost-effectiveness and suitable band gap, polycrystalline SnSe shows promising thermoelectric performance. However, its high figure-of-merit ZT is always realized at high temperatures of >800 K, which limits the whole-temperature thermoelectric efficiency. Here, we report a promising average ZT of >0.45 from 500 to 800 K in NiSe-alloyed SnSe fabricated by step-by-step solvothermal synthesis, mechanical alloying, oxidation removal, and sparkle plasma sintering processes. The introduced p-type NiSe nanophases construct NiSe–SnSe interfaces to effectively filter the low-energy carriers, leading to a significantly improved Seebeck coefficient within the entire temperature range. Moreover, the highly conductive NiSe nanophases simultaneously act as “expressways” to accelerate the carrier transport, especially at low temperatures, leading to enhanced electrical conductivity and, in turn, an improved power factor. On the other hand, NiSe–SnSe interfaces further contribute to the observed low thermal conductivity. This work provides a unique NiSe-alloying strategy to fabricate polycrystalline SnSe with improved average ZT.

Abstract:Although single crystalline SnSe has high thermoelectric figure of merit ZT, the highest ZT reported for polycrystalline SnSe-based material is not larger than 1. Here we show that a record value of ZT = 1.26 at 880 K is achieved for polycrystalline SnSe based composites with PbTe nanoinclusions. Our results indicate that the high performance arises from simultaneous increase in power factor and thermal resistance. The increased power factor mainly originates from enhanced electrical conductivity due to increased carrier concentration; while the large (similar to 25%) reduction of thermal conductivity can be ascribed to both the interface scattering of phonons and inhibition of bipolar effect. Present result demonstrates that the introduction of proper nanoinclusions can effectively elevate the thermoelectric performance of polycrystalline SnSe compound. (C) 2016 Elsevier Ltd. Independently Tuning the Power Factor and Thermal Conductivity of SnSe Via Ag2S Addition and Nanostructuring

Abstract:Single-crystal SnSe has been reported to exhibit ultralow thermal conductivity and high thermoelectric performance. For future large-scale thermoelectric applications, however, polycrystalline SnSe would offer more advantages. Unfortunately, its thermoelectric figure of merit (ZT) is much poorer than that of single crystal. Improvements are challenging because the reduction in thermal conductivity is usually accompanied by a degradation in the power factor. Here we report how the thermal conductivity of polycrystalline SnSe can be reduced by Ag2S addition and nanostructuring while avoiding this downside. We investigated the thermoelectric properties of Ag2S-added SnSe polycrystals in the range from 300 to 773 K. We obtained a peak ZT of 0.88 in SnSe with 1% Ag2S addition (SS1), twice as high as pristine SnSe (SS). The thermal conductivity is depressed even further in a nanostructured SnSe + 0.01Ag(2)S sample (SS1-Nano). More importantly, at high temperature the power factor remains as high as that of the SS1 sample. Due to a minimum thermal conductivity of 0.30 W m (-1) K-1, we obtained a maximum ZT of 1.13 in the SS1-Nano sample at 773 K.

Abstract:High thermoelectric performance is realized in SnTe-based materials through In-doping and inclusion of Cu1.75Se nanostructure. A record-high ZT value of ~1.7 is achieved at 823 K for Sn0.96In0.04Te–yCu1.75Se (y=3%, 5% and 7%). This significant enhancement in thermoelectric performance is attributed to the incorporation of nanostructured Cu1.75Se into In-doped SnTe matrix, which can simultaneously modulate the electrical and thermal transport. In doping can enhance Seebeck coefficient, leading to the improvement of power factor. Cu1.75Se dispersed in the matrix can strengthen interface scattering at the phase boundaries, yielding an extremely low lattice thermal conductivity. As a result, peak ZT of 1.7 is obtained. Our results demonstrate that for SnTe-based materials, doping plus incorporation of nanostructured phase is an effective strategy in enhancing the thermoelectric performance of SnTe.
Simultaneously optimized thermoelectric and mechanical performance of p-type polycrystalline SnSe enabled by CNTs addition

Abstract:A series of SnSe/carbon nanotubes (SnSe/CNTs) composites, with homogeneous distribution of CNTs, were fabricated by combining solution synthesis with fast sintering. Enabled by CNTs addition, both the electrical conductivity and power factor are improved significantly; the lattice thermal conductivity is suppressed due to strengthened phonon scattering. As a result, a maximum zT of 0.90 is obtained in the SnSe/CNTs composite with 0.20 wt.% CNTs, ∼ 90% higher than that of SnSe. In addition, the composite with 0.35 wt.% CNTs exhibits a dramatically increased compressive strength of 135 MPa, representing an ∼ 81% increase. This work offers a composite design strategy for synergistically improving both thermoelectric and mechanical properties of polycrystalline SnSe.

Enhanced Thermoelectric Performance of P-Type SnSe Doped with Zn

Abstract:In this study, we have synthesized SnSe doped with zinc (Zn) and investigated the effect of Zn doping on the thermoelectric properties of SnSe. The results demonstrate that a high thermoelectric figure of merit (ZT) of 0.96 at 873K is obtained for Zn0.01Sn0.99Se, which is 41% higher than that of pure SnSe (ZT=0.68). The value is the highest value reported for p-type polycrystalline doped SnSe materials, which arises from the increased power factor coming from a high electrical conductivity and an enhanced Seebeck coefficient.

Abstract:The thermoelectric properties of Na-doped polycrystalline Nax Sn1-x Se (x =0.001～0.005),prepared by fusion method,were investigated in the temperature from 300 K to 873 K.The results show that,upon slightly doping of Na (x＜0.005),besides a large reduction of thermal conductivity the electrical conductivity of Nax Sn1-x Se samples is increased by around two orders of magnitude,reaching 78 Scm-1 at 850 K;simultaneously,they possess large values (～300 μV/K,850 K) of thermopower.As a result,a high value of ZT=～1.2 (at 873 K) is achieved for Na-doped polycrystalline Na0.003 Sn0.997 Se,which is the highest ZT value ever reported for Na-doped SnSe polycrystals.

Abstract:Thermoelectric technology, enables direct conversion between heat and electricity and may have a significant impact on heat pumps and power generators. SnSe emerges as a promising thermoelectric material since the recent discovery of an ultrahigh thermoelectric figure of merit in its single crystals. It is still challenging to achieve thermoelectric performance comparable to those of the SnSe single crystals in polycrystalline SnSe. Here, we propose a new concept that extremely low thermal conductivity and high thermoelectric performance in polycrystalline SnSe can be achieved via phase separation and nanostructuring strategies. We demonstrate that Pb and Zn codoping and introduction of PbSe secondary phase contribute to remarkable enhancement of electrical conductivity and power factor. The peak power factor reaches to 5.43 μW cm−1 K−2 in Sn0.98Pb0.01Zn0.01Se. Phase-separation and nanostructuring strategies construct all-hierarchical architectures to scattering phonons. The lattice thermal conductivity is significantly reduced to 0.13 W m−1 K−1 through constructing all-hierarchical architectures and dual-atom point-defect scattering. A record high thermoelectric performance ZT = 2.2 was achieved in polycrystalline SnSe through enhancing electrical transport properties while keeping ultralow thermal conductivity. This work offers new strategies to realize high value of ZT in polycrystalline SnSe.

Abstract:Tin selenide (SnSe) with low thermal conductivity has been widely studied in the last few years because it is most promising for further thermoelectric applications. The low electrical conductivity is the main problem that limits the improvement of its thermoelectric properties. The SnSe1–x S x (x = 0, 0.1, 0.3, and 0.5) bulk samples were synthesized by the hydrothermal method, followed by spark plasma sintering. The thermal conductivity of SnSe was tuned and reduced at various temperature ranges by adjusting the amount of S added, and the low κ t of 0.26 W·m–1·K–1 for the SnSe0.5S0.5 sample was obtained at 773 K due to the S alloying and nanostructure. The peak power factor of 437 μW·m–1·K–2 for the SnSe0.7S0.3 sample was gained at 773 K. Consequently, a peak ZT value of 1.2 for the SnSe0.7S0.3 sample at 773 K was obtained, which is approximately three times that of the pure sample. The results demonstrate that S alloying can effectively improve the thermoelectric properties of SnSe materials at various temperatures.

Abstract:In this work, the thermoelectric properties of Bi0.85Sb0.15Se-x mol% SnSe (x = 0, 1, 5, 10) composites were investigated. As the SnSe content increases, the electrical conductivity σ gradually decreases. This decline can be attributed to the concurrent reduction in both carrier concentration n and carrier mobility μ. In contrast, the absolute Seebeck coefficient |S| experiences a remarkable enhancement, primarily attributed to the combined influence of reduced electron concentration and the energy filtering effect. Consequently, the power factor has undergone a significant improvement. When appropriate SnSe is added, thermal conductivity κ can be suppressed. So the ZTmax of sample x = 10 reaches 0.45 near room temperature, which is a 15.4% enhancement relative to the pristion sample.
Enhanced thermoelectric performance of Cu2Se thin film derived from potential barrier scattering by incorporating SnSe nano-dispersions

Abstract:Incorporating nano-dispersions into thermoelectric (TE) materials is an effective approach to enhance the TE properties. Herein, the TE performance of Cu2Se thin film is significantly enhanced by incorporating highly dispersed SnSe nano-inclusions. The high power factor (PF, ∼11.0 μW cm−1 K−2, 310 K) at near room temperature is achieved mainly due to the enhanced energy filtering effect that originated from the potential barrier difference. The total thermal conductivity is decreased owing to the simultaneously reduced electrical conductivity and enhanced phonon scattering. As a result, a high zT value (∼0.59 at 375 K) is achieved, which is about 12 times of pristine Cu2Se film. Remarkably, the calculated average zT values of Cu2Se/SnSe films from 310 to 375 K greatly exceed those of the pristine Cu2Se film, as well as the most state-of-the-art studies. High room-temperature PF and average zT value are crucial for expanding the practical application of Cu2Se at near room temperature. This work provides a feasible strategy to optimize the zT values of some other TE films by introducing nano-dispersions.

Abstract:SnSe is considered one of the most intriguing new thermoelectric materials. Polycrystalline SnSe offers a wide range of thermoelectric applications due to its facile synthetic processing and machinability. Herein, we have achieved a high average ZT of 0.8 as well as a high peak ZT of 1.86 in solution-synthesized porous Zn and Ga codoped SnSe nanosheets, generating a maximum energy conversion efficiency of 13.3%. High-density micro/nanopores are induced in the SnSe matrix, which are more effective for scattering phonons and reducing the thermal conductivity. The high density of micro/nanopores, nanosheet structure and dislocations contribute to an ultralow lattice thermal conductivity (0.157 W m −1 K −1 at 873 K). Meanwhile, Ga incorporation can induce band convergence and create resonance levels, producing a large Seebeck coefficient. Ga and Zn codoping contributes to a sharp increase in carrier concentration and an obviously increased electrical conductivity. The enhanced Seebeck coefficient and increased carrier concentration help in achieving a significant enhancement of the power factor over a wide temperature range in the porous Zn and Ga codoped SnSe nanosheets. Consequently, high thermoelectric performance is realized over a wide temperature range via the decoupling of electron–phonon transport in SnSe. This work opens up a great opportunity for designing prospective materials for thermoelectric applications with the aid of the solution synthesis route.

Abstract:Polycrystalline SnSe thermoelectric materials have received extensive interests owing to the low thermal conductivity and available mechanical properties. However, the low electrical conductivity seriously hinders its application. In this work, stemming from the introducing of Hf and Cl substitution, they released more electrons. Owing to the improved carrier concentration, a high electrical conductivity of 33 S cm−1 for the SnSe0.95+1 wt%HfCl4 sample was obtained at 773 K, about 5 times as much as that of the SnSe0.95 sample. Thus, a peak power factor of 553.8 μW m−1 K−2 of SnSe0.95+3 wt%HfCl4 sample at 773 K was obtained. Meanwhile, the phonon scattering was enhanced due to the decrease of grain size, the lattice thermal conductivity was suppressed. The pretty low κl of 0.33 W m−1 K−1 was obtained at 773 K for the SnSe0.95+4 wt%HfCl4 sample. Consequently, the peak ZT value of ∼1.1 was achieved for SnSe0.95+3 wt%HfCl4 sample at 773 K.

Abstract:Binary single crystal compound SnSe with high thermoelectric performance has drawn great attention to polycrystalline SnSe. Here, we synthesized highly oriented p-type polycrystalline composite samples f mol% SnTe/Ag0.005Sn0.995Se (f = 0, 0.5, 1 and 1.5) and present thermoelectric performance from 300 K to 900 K. High thermoelectric figure of merit (ZT) of the matrix Ag0.005Sn0.995Se should be attributed to highly oriented crystal grains along the (400) plane. Moreover, proper proportional (f = 0.5) incorporation of SnTe nanoinlusions into Ag0.005Sn0.995Se matrix enhances the power factor and reduces lattice thermal conductivity, which could be due to the contribution of enhanced phonon scattering resulting from abundant interfaces. Consequently, a largest ZT value of 1.6 ± 0.2 is achieved at 875 K for composite sample 0.5 mol% SnTe/Ag0.005Sn0.995Se. Furthermore, these polycrystalline composites have large values of ZT (>1) from 800 K to 900 K and good experimental repeatability, which suggests that it is a promising candidate for high temperature power generation.
Rock-salt-type nanoprecipitates lead to high thermoelectric performance in undoped polycrystalline SnSe

Abstract:We report a high ZT value of 1.3 at 850 K for undoped polycrystalline SnSe. The high thermoelectric performance is attributed to a synergistic combination of enhanced power factor and reduction of the lattice thermal conductivity. The presence of rock-salt cubic phase SnSe was identified by X-ray diffraction, transmission electron backscatter diffraction and selected area electron diffraction, which significantly contributes to the enhancement of electrical conductivity and power factor of orthorhombic SnSe material. This new material features a microstructural hierarchy of nanoprecipitates coupled with mesoscale microstructures which leads to a significant reduction of lattice thermal conductivity. As a result, a vast increase in ZT from 0.5 to 1.3 at 850 K was achieved. Our work sheds light on a new mechanism to enhance the thermoelectric properties of SnSe materials.
