Abstract:Compared to the acoustic black hole beam and plate structures, limited research has focused on the vibration damping effect of tapered circular cylindrical shells. One reason for this is the complexity involved in traditional methods, when dealing with tapered shell configurations. In this study, we introduce a symplectic space wave propagation method to investigate the vibration damping effect of tapered circular cylindrical shells. Initially, the fundamental equations governing shell behavior are transformed into Hamiltonian canonical equations in dual variables. Subsequently, a symplectic eigenvalue problem is formulated and solved to determine the wave modes, which include the propagation parameters and shapes of waves traveling within the structure. The responses of the shell structure in the physical domain are then converted into wave coordinates. By considering wave propagation, reflection and transmission at discontinuities, the system equations in the wave domain are established. Solving these equations yields the wave amplitudes which are combined to obtain the physical responses. We apply this method to analyze the forced vibration of a circular cylindrical structure consisting of a uniform primary shell, tapered shell segment and damping material shell segment. A comparison with finite element reference results demonstrates the efficiency and accuracy of our proposed method. Additionally, the analysis results indicate that the vibration response can be significantly reduced by the tapered shell. Furthermore, the influence of the geometric parameter of the tapered shell on the vibration damping effect demonstrates clear regularity, offering numerous possibilities for vibration reduction designs.
