The food security threat that shook many Asian countries in 2008 still looms, because farmers are facing the challenge of producing more rice with fewer resources of water, land, and inputs. The targets of rice improvement have changed from high yield alone to the combined targets of high yield, good quality, balanced nutrition, health safety, and sustainable production, especially in China [1]. Abstract:Black rice is a kind of whole-grain cereal, which has abundant nutrients and many health benefits. In Ledong basin of Hainan Province, it has unique ecological environment for breeding black rice. Two main technical ways, such as multiple crossing and population selection have been carried out. In the past ten years, two black rice new varieties have been officially registered, and some breeding lines attended regional tests. The breeding techniques of black rice, variety characteristics and cultivation techniques were summarized, and new perspectives for future breeding of black rice and utilization of anthocyanin of black rice were also pro-posed.

Abstract:China is the first country successfully developed and used hybrid rice technology in the world. Duration from 1976 to 1987 is the rapid development stage with growing area increased more than 100 times and reached 11 million ha. Up to 1990, it reached the highest peak of about 16 million ha. Due to the structural adjustment of agricultural production and food policies in China, it passed a staggering growth stage from 1991 to resent years with decreasing of total area but kept the ratio of about 65% of hybrid rice area to the total rice growing area. From 1988 to 2003, the number of hybrids with growing area more than 67000 ha, rapidly increased from 41 to 243, but the number of which growing area more than 6.7 million ha is gradually decreasing and the rank is changing. Due to the strong competition from more and more newly developed rice hybrids, the so-called "universal hybrid" will be no longer appeared in the future. Because of the release of numbers of new MS and restorer lines with good GCA, fine grain quality and strong resistance to diseases and pests and the improved technologies and policy support from the government, hybrid rice will continue its sustainable development and make great contribution to the food security of the country.

Abstract:Methane (CH4) and nitrous oxide (N2O) emissions from rice fields are considered to be important sources of greenhouse gases. In order to clarify the emission characteristics of CH4 and N2O at different growth stages and to find optimal early season rice varieties and cultivation methods to control greenhouse gas emissions in southeast China, we conducted research in Jinhua City, Zhejiang Province, China in 2017 and 2018. Four different early season rice varieties were planted using three different rice establishment methods (machine transplanting, artificial transplanting, and direct seeding). The grain yield, CH4, and N2O emission rates and flux and economic profit were compared between the early varieties and establishment methods. Our results show that during the rice growth period, the CH4 and N2O emission fluxes and emission rates of the early season rice varieties increased first and then decreased, reaching the maximum at booting and the minimum at the grain filling stage. Direct seeding had the lowest cost and emission fluxes and emission rates compared to machine transplanting and artificial transplanting. The emission rates and flux of 'Zhuliangyou609' and 'Zhongjiazao17' were lower than in the other varieties. However, the yield of 'Zhuliangyou609' was higher than that of 'Zhongjiazao17' under identical conditions. Hence, direct-seeded rice shows good potential for cultivation in Zhejiang Province, and 'Zhuliangyou609' is the optimal early variety. This study provides theoretical support for the development of environmentally friendly early season rice establishment methods in southeast China.

Abstract:The present study is an attempt to review the history of super hybrid rice breeding in China and abroad and an introduction to advancement in super hybrid rice breeding in China.At present,a great breakthrough in utilizing subspecies heterosis of indica and japonica rice and plant type breeding has been obtained in super hybrid rice breeding in China,and super hybrid rice has been extended for large scale cultivation.But,there are many problems existing in super hybrid rice cultivation,such as poorer adaptability,lower seed setting rate,bad grain quality,worse resistance to biotic and abiotic stresses,fewer double-cropping super rice varieties(combinations),imperfect breeding theory and technology.Therefore,some suggestions and research prospects have been put forward for overcoming these problems.

Abstract:Owing to the rapid development of greenhouse planting technology,aiming at the low efficiency of artificial seedlings greenhouse transplantation of breeding and seedlings destruction,a kind of automatic plug seedlings transplant was designed,and theoretical calculation and experiment on the transplant machine mixing,transportation organization,cutting soil institutions and its power consumption were conducted.The results showed that the spiral extrusion institution was fit for article mud generated quick-moving,cut into parts.Automatic plug seedlings transplant could reduce the labor intensity of the farmers,improve the survival rate of seedlings.Prototype test showed that the theoretical analysis and the prototype test were identical,that the structure was reasonable of this whole equipment,had very good transplantation effect,achieved the expected design goal.
Ecological and Economic Benefits of Greenhouse Gas Emission Reduction Strategies in Rice Production: A Case Study of the Southern Rice Propagation Base in Hainan Province

Abstract:Developing tailored emission reduction strategies and estimating their potential is crucial for achieving low-carbon rice production in a specific region, as well as for advancing China’s dual carbon goals in the agricultural sector. By utilizing water-saving and drought-resistant rice (WDR) with enhanced water and nitrogen utilization efficiency, the mitigation strategies were constructed for rice production systems, and their potential for emission reduction was estimated in the southern rice propagation base of Hainan Province. This study revealed that the implementation of a reduction strategy, which involves dry direct seeding and dry cultivation, combined with a 53% reduction in nitrogen fertilizer, can effectively synergize the mitigation of methane (CH4) and nitrous oxide (N2O) emissions from rice paddies. Compared with traditional flooded rice cultivation, this integrated approach exhibits an impressive potential for reducing net greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by 97% while simultaneously doubling economic benefits. Moreover, when combined with plastic film mulching, the strategy not only sustains rice yields but also achieves a remarkable emission reduction of 92%, leading to a fourfold increase in economic benefits. Our study provides a comprehensive low-carbon sustainable development strategy for rice production in the southern rice propagation base of Hainan Province and offers valuable insights for researching GHG emissions in other regions or crops. These emission reduction pathways and the assessment method could contribute to the realization of low-carbon agriculture.

Abstract:Looming labor shortages and lower efficiency demand a shift from the cultivation of seedlings via the traditional nutritive soil method (CK) to hydroponically grown long-mat seedlings (HLMS), a new method of raising rice (Oriza sativa L.) seedlings. This study was conducted to investigate the seedling quality and field growth characteristics of HLMS. We examined the effect of HLMS on seedling quality, mechanical transplantation quality, field growth characteristics, yield and benefit/cost ratio compared with those of CK (as a control). A widely grown conventional japonica rice cultivar (Wuyunjing24) and an indica hybrid rice cultivar (6Liangyou9368) were used as test material. The HLMS and CK showed no significant differences in weight/height ratio, seedling emergence rate, N content of leaves or antioxidant enzyme activities after transplantation; however, HLMS exhibited a more vigorous root system, a significantly decreased leaf area index and an extended transplantation period. The mechanical transplantation quality of HLMS was similar to that of CK but showed a significantly improved force of root entanglement. Compared with CK, the dry matter accumulation of HLMS differed quite low at the early field growth stage, whereas increased rapidly at the late growth stage. The yield and benefit/cost ratio of HLMS were equivalent or superior to those of CK. Briefly, the seedling quality of HLMS was better than that of the control, and its mechanical transplantation quality was comparable to that of the CK, enabling high-yield and high-efficiency rice production.

The situation is the same in the Asian region. To accomplish this goal advanced techniques are necessary and must be assembled. Breeding new cultivars, nursery systems, environment control, integrated nutrient management (INM), integrated pest management(IPM), information and communication technology(ICT), robot technology, such as a series of advanced technologies are necessary to build up efficient production system. ICT is one of most important technologies that ensures the reliability of agricultural products. For the small farmers, ubiquitous environment control system (UECS) is most suitable ICT tool. UECS should be a standard of communication system. Package strategy is also important aspect for sipping the greenhouse technologies. Efficient Water-Saving Irrigation Solution for Direct Seeding Rice under No-Tillage after Cultivating Wheat

Abstract:In order to explore the water-saving irrigation pattern of direct rice for high yield and excellent quality under no-tillage after wheat, the research was carried out on the experimental farm of Yangzhou University in the year 2005, which selected Wuxiangjing 14 and Lianjiajing 1 as the experimental cultivar. The semi-arid irrigation and general irrigation regime were employed under 3000 thousand basic seedling per hectare with Lianjiajing 1 and wuxiangjing 14. The productivity was similar between the two types of irrigation regime. There was no remarkable difference on the yield components, leaf area index, photosynthesis potential, net assimilation rate, and dry matter at different stage, milling quality and appearance quality, the cooking quality and nutrition quality. But all these aspects in the semi-arid irrigation treatment had a trend of decrease. The rice under semi-arid irrigation regime was strong; their leaves color were light, and the N content of the stem and grain were lower than those of conventional irrigation regime. Semi-arid irrigation saved the amount of water by one third, compared with the general irrigation regime. On the basis of the research, semi-arid irrigation with appropriately improved seeding pattern under no-tillage after wheat could be one of approaches to gain high yield and excellent quality, but the best combination need to be confirmed through further experiments.

Abstract:It is of great significance to understand the effects of different rice cultivation methods in southeast China on greenhouse gas emission characteristics and carbon footprint of paddy fields during rice cultivation for rice sustainable production. In this study, the popular conventional rice 'Jiafuzhan' and hybrid rice 'Yongyou 2640' were used as materials to establish four rice cultivation patterns suitable for different ecological types in Fujian Province: 1) double-cropping system, early rice and late rice with Jiafuzhan (D-J); 2) early maturing ratooning system, first season rice and ratooning season rice with Jiafuzhan (R-J); 3) middle-maturing ratooning system, first season rice and ratooning season with Yongyou 2640 (R-Y); and 4) single cropping system with Yongyou 2640 (S-Y), which should be synchronized in heading time with the counterpart (the ratooning season rice). Greenhouse gas emissions from paddy soil were measured by the closed static black box observation method and the gas chromatography method, respectively. The total direct and indirect greenhouse gas emissions (carbon footprints) from different rice farming patterns were evaluated by using the life cycle analysis. The results showed that greenhouse gas emissions in different rice cropping systems were lower in the early growth stage, then decreased after reaching the peak at the booting stage, demonstrating a double peak curve in the whole growth stage, in which the first peak was higher in early season or first season than the second peak in the late season or ratooning season in the cropping patterns. Moreover, the total greenhouse gas emissions were significantly different among cropping systems. The global warming potential (GWP) of different cropping patterns was in order of R-Y>D-J>S-Y>R-J, while the annual greenhouse gas emission intensity (GHGI) was D-J>S-Y>R-Y>R-J. GWP and GHGI of the ratooning system decreased by 26.1% and 14.1%, respectively, compared with those of the double-cropping system. The same pattern was observed in the ratooning rice of Yongyou 2640, which were decreased by 74.3% and 56.7%, respectively, compared with the counterpart, Yongyou 2640 in a single-cropping system synchronized heading. Carbon footprint of rice per unit yield ranged from 0.38-1.08 kg CO2-eq.·kg-1 under the different cropping systems, of which the carbon footprint of rice per unit yield was the highest under the double cropping system compared with that under other cropping systems. The reverse was true in the case of carbon footprint of rice per unit yield under the ratooning system with Yongyou 2640. Additionally, the main source of carbon footprint of different rice cropping patterns was CH4, contributing 44.2%-71.5%, suggesting that rice ratooning system could significantly reduce global warming potential and carbon emission intensity of rice in comparison with other cropping patterns. Therefore, it is key to select rice varieties with high yield and low carbon emission and to establish the supporting scientific cultivation techniques for effective reduction of CH4 emission and carbon footprint of paddy fields and promotion of ratooning rice production.

Can reduced-input direct seeding improve resource use efficiencies and profitability of hybrid rice in China?

Abstract:The mechanization of rice production in China has been accompanied by a rapid reduction in agricultural labor forces and increase in machinery purchase subsidies; however, the comprehensive performance of several major mechanized production modes regarding output, environmental protection, and profit remains uncertain to the Chinese government and farmers alike. Here, a five-year (2015–2019) field experiment was conducted to analyze the performance of farmers' mechanized seedling transplanting (FMST), farmers' mechanized direct seeding (FMDS), and reduced-input direct seeding (RIDS) concerning grain yield, energy use, greenhouse gas emissions, and economic benefits. RIDS used an unmanned aerial vehicle for sowing, fertilizing, and spraying, while adopting no-tillage, bed-furrow irrigation technology. The quantity and stability of RIDS-produced grain were similar to those of FMST and higher than those of FMDS. Furthermore, RIDS yields required significantly less machinery, human labor, fuel, and water, with 34.72% and 24.03% decreases in total energy input compared to that for FMST and FMDS, corresponding to 1.45- and 1.34-fold increases in energy productivity, respectively. The resulting CO2-eq emissions from agricultural inputs for RIDS were 71.26% and 71.32% of those for FMST and FMDS, while CH4 emissions were 32.60% and 29.24% of those for FMST and FMDS, respectively. Despite the high N2O emissions and decomposing trend of soil organic carbon in RIDS, the net global warming potential still decreased by 48.84–58.36%, and the carbon sustainability index and carbon efficiency ratio increased by 87.67–142.14% and 105.32–188.22%, respectively, compared with those of FMST and FMDS. RIDS had the lowest cost, its net return was USD 298.81 ha−1 higher than that of FMDS (similar to FMST), and its benefit-cost ratio was 10–36.19% higher than that of FMST and FMDS. Generally, RIDS offered a higher-yielding, cleaner, more sustainable rice production technology for meeting the needs of the Chinese government and farmers.

[The history and prospect of rice genetic breeding in China]

Abstract:Rice breeding in China has experienced three major leaps of dwarf breeding, heterosis utilization and green super rice cultivation, accompanied by six important processes: dwarf breeding (the first green revolution), three-line hybrid rice cultivation, two-line hybrid rice cultivation, inter-subspecies heterosis utilization, ideal plant type breeding and green super rice cultivation. The breeding subject ranges from the unique trait of high yield to the complex traits of resistance, high quality and high yield. The breeding concept is gradually upgraded from high yield and quality to the second green revolution concept of "less investment, more output, and better environment". Rice functional genomics achievements have prepared many genes with important utilization values for the second green revolution, and rice breeding is moving towards a new era of design breeding. The genomic selection technology and transgenic technology will help to develop the green super rice for "less pesticides, less fertilizers, water saving and drought tolerance, superior quality and high yield". Here, we summarize the development process of rice genetics and breeding in China, point out advantages and disadvantages of various breeding methods and breeding techniques, systematically introduce the molecular mechanisms on cytoplasmic male sterility, photoperiod-sensitive male genic sterility and indica-japonica hybrid sterility, review the important functional genes related to rice plant architecture, panicle architecture, grain size and nutrient use efficiency, clarify the correlation between yield and heading date, and highlight the important position of China in the rice basic research in the world. In particular, we emphasize the fact that Chinese rice production styles have undergone or are undergoing tremendous changes in recent years, and the breeding concept must also keep pace with the changing production styles. In the future, the hybrid breeding technology should be closely integrated with modern breeding technologies to breed rice varieties that must not only meet the market demand, but also have the natural and healthy characteristics and adapt to the new farming system and methods.

Abstract:Abstract The changing climate and water availability strongly affect the current state of agricultural production. While the global temperature rises, the occurrence of extreme climatic conditions becomes erratic. This current scenario has driven the development of rice varieties and cultivation practices that require less water and favor mechanization. Although puddled transplanted rice has been more widely used in the past, direct seeding has been gaining popularity in recent years, especially due to its water- and labor-saving features. This technique allows full crop establishment from seeds that were directly sown in the field, thus avoiding puddling, transplanting, and maintaining standing water. Consequently, it offers promising positive environmental effects including decreasing the release of greenhouse gases and increasing water-use efficiency. Historically, rice varieties bred for transplanting are also used in direct seeding, which limits the maximum yield potential of field trials. The success of direct seeding relies strongly on the development of rice varieties with robust crop establishment. Anaerobic germination, seed longevity, and early seedling vigor are the key traits required to achieve this. This chapter expounds on the physiology, molecular mechanisms, genetics, and relevance of the enumerated traits for direct seeding. A brief discussion of breeding for rice varieties with improved germination under direct seeding is also provided.
