Abstract:It is shown that the acceleration of particles by a powerful relativistic jet associated with the activity of a supermassive black hole in the Galactic center several million years ago may explain the observed cosmic ray spectrum at energies higher than $10^{15}$ eV. The accelerated particles are efficiently confined in the extended magnetized gas halo created by the supernova and central black hole activity just after the Galaxy formation. We found that both the heavy and light chemical composition of ultra-high energy cosmic rays can be consistent with observations.

Abstract:When sustained for megayears (refs. 1,2 ), high-power jets from supermassive black holes (SMBHs) become the largest galaxy-made structures in the Universe 3 . By pumping electrons, atomic nuclei and magnetic fields into the intergalactic medium (IGM), these energetic flows affect the distribution of matter and magnetism in the cosmic web 4,5,6 and could have a sweeping cosmological influence if they reached far at early epochs. For the past 50 years, the known size range of black hole jet pairs ended at 4.6–5.0 Mpc (refs. 7,8,9 ), or 20–30% of a cosmic void radius in the Local Universe 10 . An observational lack of longer jets, as well as theoretical results 11 , thus suggested a growth limit at about 5 Mpc (ref. 12 ). Here we report observations of a radio structure spanning about 7 Mpc, or roughly 66% of a coeval cosmic void radius, apparently generated by a black hole between and 6.3 Gyr after the Big Bang. The structure consists of a northern lobe, a northern jet, a core, a southern jet with an inner hotspot and a southern outer hotspot with a backflow. This system demonstrates that jets can avoid destruction by magnetohydrodynamical instabilities over cosmological distances, even at epochs when the Universe was 7 to times denser than it is today. How jets can retain such long-lived coherence is unknown at present.

Abstract:Recent observations provide compelling evidence that the bulk of the high energy cosmic rays (CRs) and gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) are co-produced by highly relativistic jets of plasmoids of stellar matter. These jets are launched by fall back matter on newly born neutron stars and stellar black holes in core collapse of stripped envelope massive stars with or without an associated supernova. The electrons in the plasmoids produce GRB pulses mainly by inverse Compton scattering of photons on their path, while magnetic reflection of the charged particles produces the high energy cosmic rays.

Abstract:Supermassive black holes with masses of millions to billions of solar masses are commonly found in the centers of galaxies. Astronomers seek to image jet formation using radio interferometry but still suffer from insufficient angular resolution. An alternative method to resolve small structures is to measure the time variability of their emission. Here we report on gamma-ray observations of the radio galaxy IC 310 obtained with the MAGIC (Major Atmospheric Gamma-ray Imaging Cherenkov) telescopes, revealing variability with doubling time scales faster than 4.8 min. Causality constrains the size of the emission region to be smaller than 20% of the gravitational radius of its central black hole. We suggest that the emission is associated with pulsar-like particle acceleration by the electric field across a magnetospheric gap at the base of the radio jet.

Abstract:We present the theoretical arguments and describe the accumulating experimental evidence that jets, powered by supermassive black holes, are true cosmic accelerators. They produce photons of TeV energy, possible higher, and may be the enigmatic source of the highest energy cosmic rays. The features of the multi-wavelength emission spectrum are dictated by the interactions of electrons and protons, accelerated in the vicinity of the black hole, with the ambient light in the galaxy. Photoproduction of neutral pions by protons on UV light is the source of the highest energy photons, in which most of the bolometric luminosity of the galaxy may be emitted. They initiate an electromagnetic cascade which via pair production on the magnetic field and photon-photon interactions determines the emerging gamma-ray spectrum at lower energies. The lower energy photons, observed by conventional astronomical techniques, are, as a result of the cascade process, several generations removed from the primary high energy beams. The case that proton beams power active galaxies is far from conclusive. A three-prong technological assault on the problem will, in the near future, hopefully provide new insights into the structure of active galactic nuclei with the construction of second-generation atmospheric Cherenkov telescopes, large-scale EeV cosmic ray detectors and high energy neutrino telescopes.

Abstract:Birth of a black-hole relativistic jetTwo groups report observations of the X-ray source Swift J164449.3+573451, which was discovered when it triggered the Swift Burst Alert Telescope on 28 March 2011. Burrows et al. report that the source has increased in brightness in the X-ray band more than 10,000-fold since 1990, and by more than 100-fold since early 2010. They conclude that we are observing the onset of relativistic jet activity from a supermassive black hole. Zauderer et al. arrive at a similar conclusion based on their observation of a radio transient associated with the source, and extensive monitoring at centimetre to millimetre wavelengths during the first month of its evolution. They estimate the mass of the black hole at around 106 solar masses.

Abstract:Massive black holes are believed to reside at the centres of most galaxies. They can be- come detectable by accretion of matter, either continuously from a large gas reservoir or impulsively from the tidal disruption of a passing star, and conversion of the gravitational energy of the infalling matter to light. Continuous accretion drives Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN), which are known to be variable but have never been observed to turn on or off. Tidal disruption of stars by dormant massive black holes has been inferred indirectly but the on- set of a tidal disruption event has never been observed. Here we report the first discovery of the onset of a relativistic accretion-powered jet in the new extragalactic transient, Swift J164449.3+573451. The behaviour of this new source differs from both theoretical models of tidal disruption events and observations of the jet-dominated AGN known as blazars. These differences may stem from transient effects associated with the onset of a powerful jet. Such an event in the massive black hole at the centre of our Milky Way galaxy could strongly ionize the upper atmosphere of the Earth, if beamed towards us.

Abstract:The black hole at the Galactic Center, Sgr A*, is the prototype of a galactic nucleus at a very low level of activity. Its radio through submm-wave emission is known to come from a region close to the event horizon, however, the source of the emission is still under debate. A successful theory explaining the emission is based on a relativistic jet model scaled down from powerful quasars. We want to test the predictive power of this established jet model against newly available measurements of wavelength-dependent time lags and the size-wavelength structure in Sgr A*. Using all available closure amplitude VLBI data from different groups, we again derived the intrinsic wavelength-dependent size of Sgr A*. This allowed us to calculate the expected frequency-dependent time lags of radio flares, assuming a range of in- and outflow velocities. Moreover, we calculated the time lags expected in the previously published pressure-driven jet model. The predicted lags are then compared to radio monitoring observations at 22, 43, and 350 GHz. The combination of time lags and size measurements imply a mildly relativistic outflow with bulk outflow speeds of gamma*beta ~ 0.5-2. The newly measured time lags are reproduced well by the jet model without any major fine tuning. The results further strengthen the case for the cm-to-mm wave radio emission in Sgr A* as coming from a mildly relativistic jet-like outflow. The combination of radio time lag and VLBI closure amplitude measurements is a powerful new tool for assessing the flow speed and direction in Sgr A*. Future VLBI and time lag measurements over a range of wavelengths will reveal more information about Sgr A*, such as the existence of a jet nozzle, and measure the detailed velocity structure of a relativistic jet near its launching point for the first time.

Abstract:In Radio Super Novae (RSNe) a magnetic field of $(B \, \times \, r) \, = \, 10^{16.0 \pm 0.12} \, {\rm Gauss \, \times \, cm}$ is observed; these are the same numbers for Blue Super Giant (BSG) star explosions as for Red Super Giant (RSG) star explosions, despite their very different wind properties. The EHT data for M87 as well for low power radio galaxies all show consistency with just this value of the quantity $(B \, \times \, r )$, key for angular momentum and energy transport, and can be derived from the radio jet data. We interpret this as a property of the near surroundings of a black hole (BH) at near maximal rotation, independent of BH mass. In the commonly used green onion model, in which a $2 \, \pi$ flow changes over to a jet flow we interpret this as a wind emanating from the BH/accretion disk system and its surroundings. Near the BH collisions in the wind can produce a large fraction of anti-protons. In this scenario the cosmic Ray (CR) population from the wind/jet is proposed to be visible as EeV protons and anti-protons in the CR data to EeV energy, with a $E^{-7/3}$ spectrum. This can be connected to a concept of inner and outer Penrose zones in the ergo-region. The observed numbers for the magnetic field imply the Planck time as the governing time scale: A BH rotating near maximum can accept a proton per log bin of energy in an extended spectrum with the associated pions every Planck time.

Extragalactic Jets from Radio to Gamma-rays

Abstract:Despite the fact that jets from black holes were first understood to exist over 40 years ago, we are still in ignorance about many primary aspects of these systems -- including the radiation mechanism at high energies, the particle makeup of the jets, and how particles are accelerated, possibly to energies as high as 100 TeV and hundreds of kpc from the central engine. We focus in particular on the discovery (and mystery) of strong X-ray emission from radio jets on kpc-scales, enabled by the unequaled high resolution of the \emph{Chandra} X-ray observatory. We review the main evidence for and against the viable models to explain this X-ray emission over the last 20 years. Finally, we present results of a recent study on the X-ray variability of kpc-scale jets, where we find evidence that between 30-100\% of the X-ray jet population is variable at the tens-of-percent level. The short ($\sim$years) variability timescale is incompatible with the IC/CMB model for the X-rays and implies extremely small structures embedded within the kpc-scale jet, and thus requires a reconsideration of many assumptions about jet structure and dynamics.

Ultrahigh-Energy Gamma-ray Emission Associated with Black Hole-Jet Systems

Abstract:Black holes (BH), one of the most intriguing objects in the universe, can manifest themselves through electromagnetic radiations initiated by the accretion flow. Some stellar-mass BHs drive relativistic jets when accreting matter from their companion stars, called microquasars. Non-thermal emission from the radio to tera-electronvolt (TeV) gamma-ray band has been observed from microquasars, indicating acceleration of relativistic particles by the system. Here we report detection of ultrahigh-energy (UHE, photon energy $E>100$TeV) gamma-ray associated with 5 out of 12 microquasars harboring BHs visible by the Large High Altitude Air Shower Observatory, namely, SS 433, V4641 Sgr, GRS 1915+105, MAXI J1820+070, and Cygnus X-1. In the central region of SS 433, extended UHE emission is detected in spatial coincidence with a giant gas cloud, suggesting the hadronic origin of the emission. An elongated source is discovered from V4641 Sgr with the spectrum continuing up to 800 TeV. GRS 1915+105, MAXI J1820+070 and Cygnus X-1 are detected with quasi-stable radiations up to $\sim$100 TeV. The detection of UHE gamma-rays demonstrates that accreting BHs and their environments can operate as extremely efficient accelerators of particles out of 1 peta-electronvolt (PeV), thus contributing to Galactic cosmic rays especially around the `knee' region.

Abstract:X-ray astronomy is closely related to the study of black hole sources. The discovery that some unseen objects, more massive than any degenerate star, emit huge amounts of X-rays helped accept the concept that back holes are present in X-ray binaries. The detection of copious amounts of highly variable X-rays helped the emergence of the paradigm that all Active Galactic Nuclei harboured a supermassive black hole. Since the bulk of the emission in these sources are in X-rays and X-rays are thought to be originating from regions closest to the black holes, it was expected that X-ray observations would yield significant inputs for our understanding of the physical phenomena happening close to black holes like the disk-jet connection and help measure many important parameters like the mass and spin of the black holes. I will trace the developments in this area for the past several decades and, noting the relatively limited success, stress the need for more sensitive measurements. I will highlight the recent X-ray polarisation measurements of the Galactic black hole candidate source Cygnus X-1 using the CZT Imager instrument of AstroSat and sketch possible future developments.

Abstract:ABSTRACT Jets launched by the supermassive black holes in the centres of cool-core clusters are the most likely heat source to solve the cooling flow problem. One way for this heating to occur is through generation of a turbulent cascade by jet-inflated bubbles. Measurements of the X-ray intensity power spectra show evidence of this cascade in different regions of the cluster, constraining the role of driving mechanisms. We analyse feedback simulations of the Perseus cluster to constrain the effect of the jet activity on the intensity fluctuations and kinematics of the cluster atmosphere. We find that, within the inner 60 kpc, the power spectra of the predicted surface brightness fluctuations are broadly consistent with those measured by Chandra and that even a single episode of jet activity can generate a long-lasting imprint on the intensity fluctuations in the innermost region of the cluster. Active galactic nucleus (AGN)-driven motions within the same region approach the values reported by Hitomi during and right after the AGN episode. However, the line-of-sight velocity dispersion excited by the jet in simulations underpredicts the Hitomi measurement. This indicates that driving a volume-filling sustained level of turbulence requires several episodes of jet activity, and/or additional processes drive turbulence outside the 60-kpc sphere. This also suggests that sharp edges of the bubbles in the innermost region of the cluster contribute substantially to the intensity of fluctuations, consistent with the Perseus observations in the inner 30-kpc region. We discuss new diagnostics to decompose annular power spectra to constrain past episodes of jet activity.

Abstract:Accretion of black holes at near-Eddington or super-Eddington rates is the most powerful episode that drives black hole growth, and it may work in several types of objects. However, the physics of accretion and jet-disc coupling in such a state remains unclear, mainly because the associated jets are not easily detectable due to the extremely weak emission or possibly episodic nature of the jets. Only a few near/super-Eddington systems have demonstrated radio activity, and it remains unclear whether there is a jet and what are their properties, in super-Eddington active galactic nuclei (AGNs) (and ultraluminous X-ray sources). The deficit is mainly due to the complex radio mixing between the origins of jets and others, such as star formation activity, photo-ionized gas, accretion disk wind, and coronal activity. In this work, we conducted high-resolution very long baseline interferometry (VLBI) observations to explore the jets in the highly accreting narrow-line Seyfert I system IZw1. Our observations successfully revealed small-scale jets (with a linear size of $\sim45$ parsec) at both 1.5 and 5 GHz, based on the high radio brightness temperature, radio morphology, and spectral index distribution. Interestingly, the lack of a flat-spectrum radio core and knotty jet structures imply episodic ejections in IZw1, which resemble the ejection process in Galactic X-ray binaries that are in the canonical very high state. The high accretion rates and jet properties in the AGN IZw1 may support the AGN/XRB analogy in the extreme state.

Abstract:Jets are endemic to both Galactic solar mass and extragalactic supermassive black holes. A recent 86 GHz image of M\,87 shows a jet emerging from the accretion ring around a black hole, providing the first direct observational constraint on the kinematics of the jet-launching region in any black hole jetted system. The very wide ($\sim280\mu\rm{as}$), highly collimated, limb-brightened cylindrical jet base is not predicted in current numerical simulations. The emission was shown to be consistent with that of a thick-walled cylindrical source that apparently feeds the flow that produces the bright limbs of the outer jet at an axial distance downstream of $0.4 \,\rm{mas}<z<0.65\, \rm{mas}$. The analysis here applies the conservation laws of energy, angular momentum, and magnetic flux to the combined system of the outer jet, the cylindrical jet, and the launch region. It also uses the brightness asymmetries of the jet and counterjet to constrain the Doppler factor. The only global solutions have a source that is located $<34 \mu\rm{as}$ from the event horizon. This includes the Event Horizon Telescope annulus of emission and the regions interior to this annulus. The axial jet begins as a magnetically dominated flow that spreads laterally from the launch radius ($<34 \mu\rm{as}$). It becomes super-magnetosonic before it reaches the base of the cylindrical jet. The flow is ostensibly redirected and collimated by a cylindrical nozzle formed in a thick accretion disk. The flow emerges from the nozzle as a mildly relativistic ($0.3c<v<0.4c$) jet with a significant protonic kinetic energy flux.

Abstract:Despite strong physical reasons that they should exist and decades of searching, jets from the Galactic center black hole, Sgr A*, have not yet been convincingly detected. Based on high-resolution Very Large Array images and ultra-deep imaging-spectroscopic data produced by the Chandra X-ray Observatory, we report new evidence for the existence of a parsec-scale jet from Sgr A*, by associating a linear feature G359.944-0.052, previously identified in X-ray images of the Galactic center, with a radio shock front on the Eastern Arm of the Sgr A West H II region. We show that the shock front can be explained in terms of the impact of a jet having a sharp momentum peak along the Galaxy's rotation axis, whereas G359.944-0.052, a quasi-steady feature with a power-law spectrum, can be understood as synchrotron radiation from shock-induced ultra-relativistic electrons cooling in a finite post-shock region downstream along the jet path. Several interesting implications of the jet properties are discussed.

Abstract:Molecular process of crystallization from an oriented amorphous state was reproduced by molecular dynamics simulation for a realistic polyethylene model. Initial oriented amorphous state was obtained by uniaxial drawing an isotropic glassy state at 100 K. By the temperature jump from 100 K to 330 K, there occurred the crystallization into the fiber structure, during the process of which we observed the developments of various order parameters. The real space image and its Fourier transform revealed that a hexagonally ordered domain was initially formed, and then highly ordered crystalline state with stacked lamellae developed after further adjustment of the relative heights of the chains along their axes.
