Abstract:When sustained for megayears (refs. 1,2 ), high-power jets from supermassive black holes (SMBHs) become the largest galaxy-made structures in the Universe 3 . By pumping electrons, atomic nuclei and magnetic fields into the intergalactic medium (IGM), these energetic flows affect the distribution of matter and magnetism in the cosmic web 4,5,6 and could have a sweeping cosmological influence if they reached far at early epochs. For the past 50 years, the known size range of black hole jet pairs ended at 4.6–5.0 Mpc (refs. 7,8,9 ), or 20–30% of a cosmic void radius in the Local Universe 10 . An observational lack of longer jets, as well as theoretical results 11 , thus suggested a growth limit at about 5 Mpc (ref. 12 ). Here we report observations of a radio structure spanning about 7 Mpc, or roughly 66% of a coeval cosmic void radius, apparently generated by a black hole between and 6.3 Gyr after the Big Bang. The structure consists of a northern lobe, a northern jet, a core, a southern jet with an inner hotspot and a southern outer hotspot with a backflow. This system demonstrates that jets can avoid destruction by magnetohydrodynamical instabilities over cosmological distances, even at epochs when the Universe was 7 to times denser than it is today. How jets can retain such long-lived coherence is unknown at present.

Abstract:International Journal of Modern Physics D, Ahead of Print. Many galaxies contain SuperMassive Black Holes (SMBHs), whose formation and history raise many puzzles. Pulsar timing arrays have recently discovered a low-frequency cosmological "hum" of gravitational waves that may be emitted by SMBH binary systems, and the JWST and other telescopes have discovered an unexpectedly large population of high-redshift SMBHs. We argue that these two discoveries may be linked, and that they may enhance the prospects for measuring gravitational waves emitted during the mergers of massive black holes, thereby opening the way towards resolving many puzzles about SMBHs as well as providing new opportunities to probe general relativity.

Abstract:Jets are endemic to both Galactic solar mass and extragalactic supermassive black holes. A recent 86 GHz image of M\,87 shows a jet emerging from the accretion ring around a black hole, providing the first direct observational constraint on the kinematics of the jet-launching region in any black hole jetted system. The very wide ($\sim280\mu\rm{as}$), highly collimated, limb-brightened cylindrical jet base is not predicted in current numerical simulations. The emission was shown to be consistent with that of a thick-walled cylindrical source that apparently feeds the flow that produces the bright limbs of the outer jet at an axial distance downstream of $0.4 \,\rm{mas}<z<0.65\, \rm{mas}$. The analysis here applies the conservation laws of energy, angular momentum, and magnetic flux to the combined system of the outer jet, the cylindrical jet, and the launch region. It also uses the brightness asymmetries of the jet and counterjet to constrain the Doppler factor. The only global solutions have a source that is located $<34 \mu\rm{as}$ from the event horizon. This includes the Event Horizon Telescope annulus of emission and the regions interior to this annulus. The axial jet begins as a magnetically dominated flow that spreads laterally from the launch radius ($<34 \mu\rm{as}$). It becomes super-magnetosonic before it reaches the base of the cylindrical jet. The flow is ostensibly redirected and collimated by a cylindrical nozzle formed in a thick accretion disk. The flow emerges from the nozzle as a mildly relativistic ($0.3c<v<0.4c$) jet with a significant protonic kinetic energy flux.

Abstract:Modern Physics Letters A, Ahead of Print. Central supermassive black holes are found in most massive galaxies. However, their origin is still poorly understood. Observations of quasars show that many supermassive black holes existed less than 700 million years after the Big Bang. To explain the existence of such black holes with masses comparable to the stellar mass of the host galaxy, just 500 million years after the Big Bang, it is probably necessary to assume that they originated from heavy seeds. In an ekpyrotic universe, a hot Big Bang occurs as a result of the collision of two branes. Quantum fluctuations create ripples on the brane surfaces, leading to spatial variations in the timing of collisions, thereby creating density perturbations that can facilitate the formation of massive black hole seeds. I hypothesize that perhaps Rayleigh–Bénard–Marangoni-type convection in the extra dimension is a more efficient source of macroscopic density perturbations than quantum fluctuations.

Abstract:A recent article on high-resolution 86 GHz observations with the Global Millimeter VLBI Array, the phased Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array, and the Greenland Telescope describes the detection of a limb-brightened cylindrical jet, $25 \mu\rm{as}< z< 100 \mu\rm{as}$, where $z$ is the axial displacement from the supermassive black hole in the sky plane. It was shown to be much wider and much more collimated than 2D simulations of electromagnetic (Blandford-Znajek) jets from the event horizon predicted. This was an unanticipated discovery. The claimed detection of a jet connected to the accretion flow provides a direct observational constraint on the geometry and physics of the jet launching region for the first time in any black hole jetted system. This landmark detection warrants further analysis. This Letter focuses on the most rudimentary properties, the shape and size of the source of the detected jet emission, the determination of which is not trivial due to line-of-sight effects. Simple thick-walled cylindrical shell models for the source were analyzed to constrain the thickness of the jet wall. The analysis indicates a tubular jet source with a radius $R\approx 144 \mu\rm{as}\approx 38M$ and that the tubular jet walls have a width $W \approx 36\mu\rm{as} \approx 9.5 M$, where $M$ is the geometrized mass of the black hole (a volume comparable to that of the interior cavity). The observed cylindrical jet connects continuously to the highly limb-brightened jet (previously described as a thick-walled tubular jet) that extends to $z> 0.65$ mas, and the two are likely in fact the same outflow (i.e., from the same central engine).

Observables for moving, stupendously charged and massive primordial black holes

Abstract:Stupendously large black holes exceeding $10^{11} M_\odot$ could exist, supported by recent observations of unexpectedly massive black holes at high redshifts. These objects may constitute a part of dark matter or even dark energy. One possibility to explain the cosmic accelerated expansion could be to consider charged black holes whose mutual repulsion overcomes their gravitational attraction. However, the extreme charge required turns these black holes into naked singularities, whose existence is questioned by the cosmic censorship hypothesis. Since the latter is driven by theoretical assumptions, we work out the most promising observables which are least cosmology-dependent to test their existence. We derive the electro-magnetic and gravitational lensing effects caused by such extreme objects at distances much larger than their extent to investigate possible ways for a discovery. Restricting searches to black holes between $10^{12}$ to $10^{14} M_\odot$, we show that such objects do not cause totally disruptive catastrophes, like dissociation of neutral hydrogen clouds or proton decay induced by strong electro-magnetic fields. Einstein rings of the order of 10" and rotation measures of plasma clouds subject to the magnetic fields induced by the moving black holes are identified as optimum observable signatures for now. Future space-based black-hole telescopes will follow up on these candidates and finally check the cosmic censorship hypothesis by their strong-field strong-lensing signatures, like an additional sub-arcsecond inner Einstein ring. Observable effects are so surprisingly moderate that a violation of cosmic censorship is hard to detect and even explaining cosmic expansion with moving naked singularities might be possible.

Abstract:Massive black holes are fundamental constituents of our cosmos, from the Big Bang to today. Understanding their formation from cosmic dawn, their growth, and the emergence of the first, rare quasars in the early Universe remains one of our greatest theoretical and observational challenges. Hydrodynamic cosmological simulations self-consistently combine the processes of structure formation at cosmological scales with the physics of smaller, galaxy scales. They capture our most realistic understanding of massive black holes and their connection to galaxy formation and have become the primary avenue for theoretical research in this field. The space-based gravitational wave interferometer, LISA, will open up new investigations into the dynamical processes involving massive black holes. Multi-messenger astrophysics brings new exciting prospects for tracing the origin, growth and merger history of massive black holes across cosmic ages.

The Discovery of the Oldest Supermassive Black Hole

Abstract:On December 20, 2021, the website of Science News summarized "6 surprising records science set in 2021", including the oldest black hole discovered by astronomers. These new findings extend the limits of scientific research and the imagination of human beings. Here we present a brief introduction to the discovery of the oldest black hole in the early Universe and its importance in science, and give some prospects of the related studies in the future. Quasars are luminous active galactic nuclei with supermassive black holes (SMBHs) in their centers, accreting the surrounding gas and emitting huge power. Distant quasars are unique tracers to study the formation of the earliest SMBHs and the history of cosmic reionization. On January 14, 2021, in a paper appeared in the Astrophysical Journal Letters, an international team led by Dr. Feige Wang, Dr. Jinyi Yang and Prof. Xiaohui Fan at University of Arizona reported the discovery of a luminous quasar J0313-1806 at redshift 7.64. This discovery breaks the former redshift record, 7.54 for the quasar J1342+0928, making J0313-1806 the most distant quasar discovered so far, with a distance of about 13 billion light years from us. The near-infrared spectra taken with several largest ground based telescopes reveal the existence of a black hole of 1.6 billion solar masses in the center of J0313-1806. It becomes the oldest black hole in the early Universe, with the age of only 670 million years after the Big Bang. How can a black hole grow to 1.6 billion solar masses within 670 million years (only about 5% of the universe's current age)? The discovery of the oldest black hole provides the most serious challenge to the current understanding of the black hole formation and growth. SMBHs are thought to grow from smaller seed black holes that accrete the surrounding matter. The popular idea is that the seed black holes formed through the collapse of the first generation massive stars (or population III stars), but this can only make the seed black holes up to a few hundred solar masses in most cases, or up to a few thousand solar masses for the extreme cases in the dense stellar clusters. However, even if we assume that J0313-1806's seed black hole grew as fast as possible, it would have needed a starting mass of at least 10000 solar masses at redshift 30. Among the theoretical models currently known, only the direct collapse black hole (DCBH) model involving the vast amounts of primordial cold hydrogen gas can provide a possible explanation. In addition, J0313-1806 also shows many important features. The rest-frame UV spectrum exhibits broad absorption troughs, which are thought to be produced by the extremely high-velocity outflows launched from the accretion disk around the central black hole. These outflows have a maximum velocity up to 20% of the speed of light, and can provide strong feedbacks to affect the star formation in the quasar host galaxy due to the extremely high kinetic power. J0313-1806's host galaxy has a very rapid star formation process, with the star formation rate 200 times higher than the Milky Way. Together with its huge luminosity of 36 trillion times higher than the Sun, J0313-1806 has become one of the most important targets to study the formation and growth of the supermassive black holes, as well as their influences on the host galaxies in the early Universe. There will be more observations on the oldest black hole in the near future. The James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) was successfully launched on December 25, 2021. The team who discovered the oldest black hole has been awarded the JWST time of more than two hundred hours. More surprising discoveries are expected to be revealed by the future JWST observations on the most distant black holes, galaxies and quasars in the epoch of cosmic reionization.

Abstract:Despite strong physical reasons that they should exist and decades of searching, jets from the Galactic center black hole, Sgr A*, have not yet been convincingly detected. Based on high-resolution Very Large Array images and ultra-deep imaging-spectroscopic data produced by the Chandra X-ray Observatory, we report new evidence for the existence of a parsec-scale jet from Sgr A*, by associating a linear feature G359.944-0.052, previously identified in X-ray images of the Galactic center, with a radio shock front on the Eastern Arm of the Sgr A West H II region. We show that the shock front can be explained in terms of the impact of a jet having a sharp momentum peak along the Galaxy's rotation axis, whereas G359.944-0.052, a quasi-steady feature with a power-law spectrum, can be understood as synchrotron radiation from shock-induced ultra-relativistic electrons cooling in a finite post-shock region downstream along the jet path. Several interesting implications of the jet properties are discussed.
Black Holes from Cosmic Rays: Probes of Extra Dimensions and New Limits on TeV-Scale Gravity

Abstract:If extra spacetime dimensions and low-scale gravity exist, black holes will be produced in observable collisions of elementary particles. For the next several years, ultra-high energy cosmic rays provide the most promising window on this phenomenon. In particular, cosmic neutrinos can produce black holes deep in the Earth's atmosphere, leading to quasi-horizontal giant air showers. We determine the sensitivity of cosmic ray detectors to black hole production and compare the results to other probes of extra dimensions. With n \ge 4 extra dimensions, current bounds on deeply penetrating showers from AGASA already provide the most stringent bound on low-scale gravity, requiring a fundamental Planck scale M_D > 1.3 - 1.8 TeV. The Auger Observatory will probe M_D as large as 4 TeV and may observe on the order of a hundred black holes in 5 years. We also consider the implications of angular momentum and possible exponentially suppressed parton cross sections; including these effects, large black hole rates are still possible. Finally, we demonstrate that even if only a few black hole events are observed, a standard model interpretation may be excluded by comparison with Earth-skimming neutrino rates.

Jets, Outflows, and Explosions in Massive Star Formation

Abstract:Multispectral studies of nearby, forming stars provide insights into all classes of accreting systems. Objects which have magnetic fields, spin, and accrete produce jets and collimated outflows. Jets are seen in systems ranging from brown dwarf stars to supermassive black holes. Outflow speeds are typically a few times the escape speed from the launch region - 100s of \kms\ for young stars to nearly the speed of light for black-holes. Because many young stellar objects (YSOs) are nearby, we can see outflow evolution and measure proper motions on times scales of years. Because the shocks in YSO outflows emit in atoms, ions, and molecules in addition to the continuum, many physical properties such as temperatures, densities, and velocities can be measured. Momenta and kinetic energies can be computed. YSO outflows are a major source of feedback in the self-regulation of star formation. The lessons learned can be applied to much more distant and energetic cosmic sources such as AGN and galactic nuclear super winds - systems in which evolution occurs on time-scales of hundreds to millions of years. Some dense star-forming regions produce powerful explosions. The nearest massive star-forming region, Orion OMC1, powered a $\sim 10^{48}$ erg explosion about 550 years ago (that is when the light from the event would have reached the Solar System). The OMC1 explosion was likely powered by an N-body interaction which resulted in the formation of a compact, AU-scale binary or resulted in a protostellar merger. The binary or merger remnant, the $\sim$15 \Msol\ object known as radio source I (Src I) was ejected from the core with a speed of $\sim$10 \kms\ along with two other stars. The $\sim$10~\Msol\ BN object was ejected with $\sim$30~\kms\ and a $\sim$3~\Msol\ star was ejected with $\sim$55~\kms .

Abstract:The discovery of jets from tidal disruption events (TDEs) rejuvenated the old field of relativistic jets powered by accretion onto supermassive black holes. In this Chapter, we first review the extensive multi-wavelength observations of jetted TDEs. Then, we show that these events provide valuable information on many aspects of jet physics from a new prospective, including the on-and-off switch of jet launching, jet propagation through the ambient medium, $\gamma/$X-ray radiation mechanism, jet composition, and the multi-messenger picture. Finally, open questions and future prospects in this field are summarized.

Abstract:Recent developments have ushered in a new era in the field of black hole astrophysics, providing our first direct view of the remarkable environment near black hole event horizons. These observations have enabled astronomers to confirm long-standing ideas on the physics of gas flowing into black holes with temperatures that are hundreds of times greater than at the center of the Sun. At the same time, the observations have conclusively shown that light rays near a black hole experience large deflections which cause a dark shadow in the center of the image, an effect predicted by Einstein's theory of General Relativity. With further investment, this field is poised to deliver decades of advances in our understanding of gravity and black holes through new and stringent tests of General Relativity, as well as new insights into the role of black holes as the central engines powering a wide range of astronomical phenomena.

Catching Gravitational Waves With A Galaxy-sized Net Of Pulsars

Abstract:Until recently, the only way to observe the Universe was from light received by telescopes. But we are now able to measure gravitational waves, which are ripples in the fabric of the Universe predicted by Albert Einstein. If two very dense objects (like black holes) orbit each other closely, they warp space and send out gravitational waves. For black holes that are similar in mass to the Sun, scientists use the LIGO detector on Earth. But for the biggest black holes in the Universe (billions of times more massive than the Sun), scientists monitor a net of rapidly-spinning neutron stars (called pulsars) across the Milky Way. Any gravitational wave passing by will change how long radio signals from these pulsars take to get to Earth. The NANOGrav Collaboration monitored 34 of these pulsars over 11 years, in an attempt to detect gravitational waves from giant black holes.

Abstract:The most powerful persistent accelerators in the Universe are jetted active galaxies. Blazars, galaxies whose jets are directed towards Earth, dominate the extragalactic gamma-ray sky. Still, most of the highest-energy particle accelerators likely elude detection. These extreme blazars, whose radiated energy can peak beyond 10 TeV, are ideal targets to study particle acceleration and radiative processes, and may provide links to cosmic rays and astrophysical neutrinos. The growing number of extreme blazars observed at TeV energies has been critical for the emergence of gamma-ray cosmology, including measurements of the extragalactic background light, tight bounds on the intergalactic magnetic field, and constraints on exotic physics at energies inaccessible with human-made accelerators. Tremendous progress has been achieved over the past decade, which bodes well for the future, particularly with the deployment of the Cherenkov Telescope Array.
