Abstract:AbstractIn anion exchange membrane fuel cells, catalytic reactions occur at a well‐defined three‐phase interface, wherein conventional heterogeneous catalyst layer structures exacerbate problems, such as low catalyst utilization and limited mass transfer. We developed a structural engineering strategy to immobilize a molecular catalyst tetrakis(4‐methoxyphenyl)porphyrin cobalt(II) (TMPPCo) on the side chains of an ionomer (polyfluorene, PF) to obtain a composite material (PF‐TMPPCo), thereby achieving a homogeneous catalysis environment inside ion‐flow channels, with greatly improved mass transfer and turnover frequency as a result of 100 % utilization of the catalyst molecules. The unique structure of the homogeneous catalysis system comprising interconnected nanoreactors exhibits advantages of low overpotential and high fuel‐cell power density. This strategy of reshaping of the catalyst layer structure may serve as a new platform for applications of many molecular catalysts in fuel cells.

Abstract:In proton exchange membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs), the performance of the cathode catalyst layer depends on the effective formation and uniform distribution of the three-phase boundary (catalyst, ionomer, and oxygen). However, traditional cathode catalyst layer structures based on heterogeneous catalysis have reduced the catalyst utilization rate and mass transfer efficiency for the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR), which further restricts the development of PEMFCs. Here, we covalently grafted an ORR molecular catalyst, tetrakis(4-methoxyphenyl) porphyrin iron (II), onto the side chain of a Nafion ionomer. This strategy allows the catalytic center of the transition metal macrocycle to be anchored inside the ion flow channel. Mössbauer spectroscopy showed that the kinetics of the electrode reaction were improved owing to the increase in electron density around the Fe center. Additionally, the improvement in catalytic active site utilization and mass (protons, oxygen) transfer effectively promotes the performance output of the fuel cell. This novel catalyst layer structure may provide a new platform for the development of high-performance molecular catalysts for applications in fuel cells and other energy devices.
IrO X Supported onto Niobium-Doped Titanium Dioxide as an Anode Reversal Tolerant Electrocatalyst for Proton Exchange Membrane Fuel Cells

Abstract:The addition of an oxygen evolution electrocatalyst to an anode catalyst layer is demonstrated as a practical approach to address the voltage reversal of proton exchange membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs). In this work, IrO X nanoparticles uniformly deposited on niobium-doped TiO2 (IrO X /Nb0.1Ti0.9O2) by a sol–gel method are employed as reversal tolerant anodes (RTAs) for PEMFCs. The membrane electrode assembly (MEA) with this RTA possesses a reversal tolerance time of 29.1 min, which is the best result among all the as-prepared MEAs. Meanwhile, the decrease in the cell voltage of this MEA after reversal testing is only 61 mV at a current density of 1.2 A cm–2 with a degradation rate of 11.1%. The improved reversal tolerance is attributed, in part, to the uniformly distributed IrO X nanoparticles, boosting the oxygen evolution reaction and, in part, to avoid the carbon oxidation reaction by the application of a noncarbon support. This result can lay a fundamental basis for the application of RTA based on a noncarbon support to improve the anode reversal tolerance for PEMFCs.

Abstract:For several decades, proton exchange membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs) have been a topic of zero-emission energy conversion technology research, spanning from material development to system control. Most of the PEMFC research is focused on the cost reduction of catalyst and membrane as well as the improvement of the long-term durability. Harsh and dynamic operating conditions such as rapid load changes, cold start temperatures, insufficient gas supply or flooding of the anode with water lead to a fatal damage of the very thin anode catalyst layer. [1-2] During the hydrogen starvation, the carbon corrosion occurs to supply further protons and electrons to the cathode, resulting in an increase of the anode potential. This event is well-known as cell reserval and results in a decrease of the overall PEMFC performance. In this study, we evaluated a new catalyst concept by combining both functionalities (hydrogen oxidation reaction (HOR) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER)) in single nanoparticles. The potential of this bifunctional catalyst concept will be compared with the mostly used catalyst system prepared by a physical mixture of Pt/C and IrOx as co-catalyst. Abstract:Voltage reversal induced by hydrogen starvation can severely corrode the anode catalyst support and deteriorate the performance of proton exchange membrane fuel cells. A material-based strategy is the inclusion of an oxygen evolution reaction catalyst (e.g., IrO2) in the anode to promote water electrolysis over harmful carbon corrosion. In this work, an Ir-Pt/C composite catalyst with high metal loading is prepared. The membrane-electrode-assembly (MEA) with 80 wt% Ir-Pt(1:2)/C shows a first reversal time (FRT) of up to 20 hours, which is about ten times that of MEA with 50 wt% Ir-Pt(1:2)/C does. Furthermore, the MEA with 80 wt% Ir-Pt(1:2)/C exhibits a minimum cell voltage loss of 6 A/cm2 when the FRT is terminated in 2 hours, in which the MEA with 50 wt% Ir-Pt(1:2)/C exhibits a voltage loss of 105 A/cm2. Further physicochemical and electrochemical characterizations demonstrate that the destruction of anode catalyst layer caused by the voltage reversal process is alleviated by the use of the composite catalyst with high metal loading. Hence, our results reveal that the combination of OER catalyst on the Pt/C with high metal loading is a promising approach to alleviate the degradation of anode catalyst layer during the voltage reversal process for PEMFCs.

Abstract:Anode cell reversal, which is caused by fuel starvation, poses a great threat to the durability of proton exchange membrane fuel cells. Commercially, iridium oxide or iridium is applied to boost oxygen evolution reaction, which alleviates carbon corrosion and protects the catalyst layer structure. However, the key factors that affect the anti-reversal ability and the interaction between Pt, Ir, and carbon support are still unclear. Hence, we systematically studied the performance using three typical carbon supports with three metal contents and different metal deposition orders by experiments and model calculations. A new parameter, "relative metal coverage", is put forward to evaluate and predict the anti-reversal ability, showing higher relative metal coverage results in a longer reversal time and lower polarization performance degradation rate. Typically, only a 15.5% polarization performance loss after 1700 mins reversal time when the relative metal coverage of high metal content Ir/Pt/Super P anode is one. The results suggest that increasing relative metal coverage is a practical approach to improve reversal tolerance and provide new insights into the reversal tolerant anodes design.

Abstract:Atomically dispersed metal catalysts anchored on nitrogen-doped (N-doped) carbons demand attention due to their superior catalytic activity relative to that of metal nanoparticle catalysts in energy storage and conversion processes. Herein, we introduce a simple and versatile strategy for the synthesis of hollow N-doped carbon capsules that contain one or more atomically dispersed metals (denoted as H-M-Nx-C and H-Mmix-Nx-C, respectively, where M = Fe, Co, or Ni). This method utilizes the pyrolysis of nanostructured core-shell precursors produced by coating a zeolitic imidazolate framework core with a metal-tannic acid (M-TA) coordination polymer shell (containing up to three different metal cations). Pyrolysis of these core-shell precursors affords hollow N-doped carbon capsules containing monometal sites (e.g., Fe-Nx, CoNx, or Ni-Nx) or multimetal sites (Fe/Co-Nx, Fe/Ni-Nx, Co/Ni-Nx, or Fe/Co/Ni-Nx). This inventory allowed exploration of the relationship between catalyst composition and electrochemical activity for the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) in acidic solution. H-Fe-Nx-C, H-Co-Nx-C, H-FeCo-Nx-C, H-FeNi-Nx-C, and H-FeCoNi-Nx-C were particularly efficient ORR catalysts in acidic solution. Furthermore, the H-Fe-Nx-C catalyst exhibited outstanding initial performance when applied as a cathode material in a proton exchange membrane fuel cell. The synthetic methodology introduced here thus provides a convenient route for developing next-generation catalysts based on earth-abundant components.

Abstract:A catalytic material is introduced into the polymer matrix to prepare a novel polymeric alkaline electrolyte membrane (AEM) which simultaneously increases ionic conductivity, reduces the fuel cross-over. In this work, the hydroxide anion exchange membrane is mainly composed of poly(vinylalcohol) and alkaline exchange resin. CoCl2 is added into the poly(vinylalcohol) and alkaline exchange resin gel before casting the membrane to introduce catalytic materials. CoCl2 is converted into CoOOH after the reaction with KOH solution. The crystallinity of the polymer matrix decreases and the ionic conductivity of the composite membrane is notably improved by the introduction of Co-species. A direct borohydride fuel cell using the composite membrane exhibits an open circuit voltage of 1.11 V at 30 degrees C, which is notably higher than that of cells using other AEMs. The cell using the composite membrane achieves a maximum power density of 283 mW cm(-2) at 60 degrees C while the cell using the membrane without Co-species only reaches 117 mW cm(-2) at the same conditions. The outstanding performance of the cell using the composite membrane benefits from impregnation of the catalytic Co-species in the membrane, which not only increases the ionic conductivity but also reduces electrode polarization thus improves the fuel cell performance. This work provides a new approach to develop high-performance fuel cells through adding catalysts in the electrolyte membrane.
Study on Anode Catalyst Layer Configuration for Proton Exchange Membrane Fuel Cell with Enhanced Reversal Tolerance and Polarization Performance

Abstract:Hydrogen starvation leads to the extreme deterioration of fuel cell performance due to the induced voltage reversal and carbon corrosion in the anode catalyst layer (ACL) and gas diffusion layer. In this paper, reversal-tolerant anodes (RTAs) with different ACL configurations are proposed, where IrOx/C is used as a water electrolysis catalyst. Experimental results show that the separate IrOx/C catalyst layer of MEA samples, layered reversal-tolerant catalyst-coated membrane (layered-RTA), and reversal-tolerant gas diffusion electrode (GDE-RTA) significantly enhance the reversal tolerance and cell performance compared to conventional anode and common RTA consisting of a homogeneous catalyst layer mixed with IrOx/C and Pt/C (hybrid-RTA). Of these, GDE-RTA possessed a reversal tolerance time of 86 min, a power density of 1.42 W cm−2, and a minimum degradation rate of 2.4 mV min−1, suggesting it to be the best RTA structure. Cyclic voltammetry and electrochemical impedance spectrum were used to detect the properties of each sample. Additionally, the degradation mechanisms of the three RTAs are thoroughly investigated and discussed by means of microstructural characterization through scanning electron microscopy and transmission electron microscopy. This work provides novel ideas for the fabrication of a robust RTA by tuning the ACL configuration, which is practical for the commercialization of fuel cells.

Abstract:Proton exchange membrane fuel cells have been regarded as the most promising candidate for fuel cell vehicles and tools. Their broader adaption, however, has been impeded by cost and lifetime. By integrating a thin layer of tungsten oxide within the anode, which serves as a rapid-response hydrogen reservoir, oxygen scavenger, sensor for power demand, and regulator for hydrogen-disassociation reaction, we herein report proton exchange membrane fuel cells with significantly enhanced power performance for transient operation and low humidified conditions, as well as improved durability against adverse operating conditions. Meanwhile, the enhanced power performance minimizes the use of auxiliary energy-storage systems and reduces costs. Scale fabrication of such devices can be readily achieved based on the current fabrication techniques with negligible extra expense. This work provides proton exchange membrane fuel cells with enhanced power performance, improved durability, prolonged lifetime, and reduced cost for automotive and other applications.
Thickness effects of anode catalyst layer on reversal tolerant performance in proton exchange membrane fuel cell

Abstract:Real-world driving conditions will likely cause hydrogen starvation at the anode chambers of stacks to trigger voltage reversal events, posing a tremendous challenge to the durability of proton exchange membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs). The reversal-tolerant anode (RTA), a material-based solution, that inclusion of oxygen evolution reaction (OER) catalyst into the anode is usually employed to cope with the voltage reversal issue. In this work, we investigate the impact of anode catalyst layer thickness on the voltage reversal performance of the membrane-electrode assemblies (MEAs) with conventional anodes (Pt/C catalyst) and RTAs doped with IrO2 catalyst, a representative OER catalyst. We find that regardless of how thick the anode catalyst layer is, the conventional MEAs exhibit almost similar voltage reversal behaviors and times, only about 1 min to reach the shutdown voltage (−2.5 V). As for the RTA MEAs, a surprising thickness effect that the thinner RTA with the same IrO2 loading shows superior voltage reversal tolerance. Notably, an ultra-thin RTA (~2 μm) exhibits the reversal tolerance time of 310 min, which is five times higher reversal tolerance time than most of the reported RTAs. We conclude that this thickness effect mainly results from the ionomer distribution on the OER catalyst. Besides, we observe that the RTA with a higher ionomer content shows the better reversal tolerance performance. Our work highlights the importance of the OER Triple-Phase-Boundary (TPB) and the need for improved electrode designs for robust RTAs.

Abstract:The interactive Ir atoms with varied geometric structure play a crucial role in promoting the intrinsic oxygen‐evolution activity, as it can optimize the intermediate adsorption by adjusting the d‐band center of active Ir sites. This correlation of Ir atoms benefits their valence stability, suppressing the over‐oxidation of active Ir and synergistically improving the catalyst durability. Iridium (Ir)‐based oxide is the state‐of‐the‐art electrocatalyst for acidic water oxidation, yet it is restricted to a few Ir‐O octahedral packing modes with limited structural flexibility. Herein, the geometric structure diversification of Ir is achieved by integrating spatially correlated Ir atoms into the surface lattice of TiO2 and its booting effect on oxygen evolution reaction (OER) is investigated. Notably, the resultant i‐Ir/TiO2 catalyst exhibits much higher electrocatalytic activity, with an overpotential of 240 mV at 10 mA cm−2 and excellent stability of 315 h at 100 mA cm−2 in acidic electrolyte. Both experimental and theoretical findings reveal that flexible Ir─O─Ir coordination with varied geometric structure plays a crucial role in enhancing OER activity, which optimize the intermediate adsorption by adjusting the d‐band center of active Ir sites. Operando characterizations demonstrate that the interactive Ir─O─Ir units can suppress over‐oxidation of Ir, effectively widening the stable region of Ir species during the catalytic process. The proton exchange membrane (PEM) electrolyzer, equipped with i‐Ir/TiO2 as an anode, gives a low driving voltage of 1.63 V at 2 A cm−2 and maintains stable performance for over 440 h. This work presents a general strategy to eliminate the inherent geometric limitations of IrOx species, thereby inspiring further development of advanced catalyst designs.

Abstract:Proton exchange membrane fuel cells require oxygen reduction catalysts with high activity and stability. Pt based alloy materials are most widely applied ORR catalyst due to its high intrinsic activity, but usually suffer from rapid deactivation as a result of particle agglomeration, detachment, Ostwald ripening and/or Pt dissolution. Here we investigate the degradation of the PdPt alloys via in situ X-ray absorption fine structure, Δ μ analysis, identical location-electron microscopy and DFT calculations. We conclude that the origin of high activity and stability of the PdPt catalyst stems from the oxidation resistance of metallic Pt, forming mainly surface adsorbed O species at high potentials. Two stage degradation process are observed, showing an evolution of dynamic surface dependent ORR performance along with the deactivation process. The careful design of Pt alloy structure leads to controlled surface oxygen behaviours. This opens a new way to increase the lifespan of fuel cells and improve the Pt utilization efficiency.

To address this issue, we developed a novel catalyst by depositing platinum-iridium (Pt-Ir) alloys onto phosphorus-modified, pyrolyzed ZIF-67 substrates. The phosphorus doping significantly enhanced the graphitization of the ZIF-67 substrate during thermal treatment and improved the binding between the Pt-Ir alloy and the carbon substrate, thereby enhancing the electronic properties and stability of the alloy nanoparticles. The Pt-Ir-P/ZIF67 anode catalyst demonstrated exceptional performance in hydrogen-oxygen fuel cells, achieving a power density of up to 1.37 W/cm(2) and enduring voltage reversal for up to 130 min, showcasing its outstanding durability.

Abstract:The limited durability of metal-nitrogen-carbon electrocatalysts severely restricts their applicability for the oxygen reduction reaction in proton exchange membrane fuel cells. In this study, we employ the chemical vapor modification method to alter the configuration of active sites from FeN4 to the stable monosymmetric FeN2+N'2, along with enhancing the degree of graphitization in the carbon substrate. This improvement effectively addresses the challenges associated with Fe active center leaching caused by N-group protonation and free radicals attack due to the 2-electron oxygen reduction reaction. The electrocatalyst with neoteric active site exhibited excellent durability. During accelerated aging test, the electrocatalyst exhibited negligible decline in its half-wave potential even after undergoing 200,000 potential cycles. Furthermore, when subjected to operational conditions representative of fuel cell systems, the electrocatalyst displayed remarkable durability, sustaining stable performance for a duration exceeding 248 h. The significant improvement in durability provides highly valuable insights for the practical application of metal-nitrogen-carbon electrocatalysts.

Abstract:IrO2 has been widely used as the anode co-catalyst for mitigating cell voltage reversal damages in proton exchange membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs). However, under the PEMFC anode operation conditions, conventionally prepared IrO2 catalysts are reduced by H2, forming metallic Ir on their surface, which is prone to dissolution during start-up/shut-down (SUSD) cycles. The dissolved Irn+ ions can permeate through the membrane to the cathode electrode, poisoning the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) activity of the Pt/C cathode catalyst. In this study, we introduce an unprecedented approach to synthesize IrO2 catalysts (irr-IrO2) which are not reduced in the PEMFC anode environment at 80°C over extended time. Their preparation is based on an industrially scalable procedure, consisting of a high-temperature (650-1000°C) heat treatment step, a subsequent ball milling step, and a final post-annealing step, thereby attaining catalysts with specific surface areas of ~ 25 m2 g-1. The high reduction resistance of the irr-IrO2 catalysts, attributed to their highly ordered crystalline structure compared to that of typically synthesized IrO2 catalysts, is reflected by the observation that SUSD cycling of MEAs with the irr-IrO2 as anode co-catalysts does not result in iridium dissolution and the associated iridium poisoning of the Pt/C cathode catalyst.

Abstract:Anion exchange ionomers employed as electrode catalyst binders and anion exchange membranes are central components for anion exchange membrane fuel cells. Fast oxygen transport in the catalyst binder and high ion conductivity of the ionomer and membrane are essential while designing their molecular structure. Here, we tailor a fluorinated ionomer and elucidate the effect of fluorination on the properties of catalyst binder and membrane. The extraordinary oxygen-dissolving capacity of the fluorinated ionomer improves the local oxygen transport at the catalyst layer triple-phase boundary. Moreover, fluorination enhances the mechanical stability and chemical inertness of the ionomer membrane and promotes its self-assembly to construct well-defined microphase separated morphology by increasing chain thermodynamic immiscibility. The resulting fluorinated membrane shows 1.4–1.8-fold improvements in hydroxide conductivity and mechanical properties compared to the fluorine-free counterpart, as well as exceptional alkaline stability (over 90% hydroxide conductivity retention under 2 M aq. NaOH at 80 °C for 2000 h). Such synergistic improvements in ionomer binder and membrane significantly improve the single-cell performance (1.7 vs. 1.0 W cm−2 peak power density) and durability (1.8 vs. 2.4 mV h−1 voltage decline rate for 100 h).
