Abstract:The dominant theoretical uncertainties in both the anomalous magnetic moment of the muon and the value of the electromagnetic coupling at the Z scale, M(Z), arise from their hadronic contributions. Since these will ultimately dominate the experimental errors, we study the correlation between them, as well as with other fundamental parameters. To this end we present analytical formulas for the QCD contribution from higher energies and from heavy quarks. Including these correlations affects the Higgs boson mass extracted from precision data.

Abstract:The latest experimental and theoretical developments in the high-precision determination of the strong coupling $\alpha_s$ are briefly reviewed. Six groups of observables: (i) lattice QCD data, (ii) hadronic $\tau$ decays, (iii) deep-inelastic $e^\pm p$ data and parton distribution functions (PDF) fits, (iv) event shapes and jet rates in $e^+e^-$ collisions, (v) Z boson hadronic decays, and (vi) top-quark cross sections in pp collisions, are used to extract the current world-average at the Z pole mass, $\alpha_s(m_Z^2) = 0.1181 \pm 0.0011$ at next-to-next-to-leading-order (NNLO), or beyond, accuracy. Additional NNLO extractions have recently appeared based on new lattice studies, the $R(s)$ ratio in $e^+e^-\to \mbox{hadrons}$, updated PDF fits, energy-energy correlations in $e^+e^-$ collisions, jet cross sections in $e^\pm p$ collisions, and the full set of $pp\to t\bar{t}$ cross sections at the LHC. Inclusion of these new data into the world-average would slightly increase its value and reduce its uncertainty to $\alpha_s(m_Z^2) = 0.1183 \pm 0.0008$. Future $\alpha_s$ extraction perspectives with permille uncertainties at future high-luminosity $e^+e^-$ machines -- via W and Z hadronic decays, parton fragmentation functions, and photon $F_2(x,Q^2)$ structure function in $\gamma\gamma$ collisions -- are also discussed.

Abstract:The current phenomenological determinations of $\alpha_s(M_\tau)$ and $\alpha_s(M_Z)$ are shown to be only marginally consistent with the QCD evolution of the strong coupling constant between $M_Z$ and $M_\tau$. This motivates a revised estimate of $\alpha_s(M_\tau)$ since the perturbative series used to extract $\alpha_s(M_\tau)$ from the $\tau$ hadronic width exhibits slow convergence. Padé summation techniques provide an estimate of these unknown higher-order effects, leading to the revised determination $\alpha_s(M_\tau)=0.333\pm 0.030 $. This value is 10% smaller than current estimates, improving the compatibility of phenomenological estimates for $\alpha_s(M_\tau)$ and $\alpha_s(M_Z)$ with the QCD evolution of the strong coupling constant.

Abstract:We present the details and first results of a new strategy for the determination of $\alpha_s(m_Z)$. By simultaneously decoupling 3 fictitious heavy quarks we establish a relation between the $\Lambda$-parameters of three-flavor QCD and pure gauge theory. Very precise recent results in the pure gauge theory can thus be leveraged to obtain the three-flavour $\Lambda$-parameter in units of a common decoupling scale. Connecting this scale to hadronic physics in 3-flavour QCD leads to our result in physical units, $\Lambda^{(3)}_{\bar{\rm MS}} = 336(12)\, {\rm MeV}$, which translates to $\alpha_s(m_Z) = 0.11823(84)$. This is compatible with both the FLAG average and the previous ALPHA result, with a comparable, yet still statistics dominated, error. This constitutes a highly non-trivial check, as the decoupling strategy is conceptually very different from the 3-flavour QCD step-scaling method, and so are their systematic errors. These include the uncertainties of the combined decoupling and continuum limits, which we discuss in some detail. We also quantify the correlation between both results, due to some common elements, such as the scale determination in physical units and the definition of the energy scale where we apply decoupling.

Determination of the Strong Coupling Constant $α_s$ from Inclusive Semi-leptonic $B$ Meson Decays

Abstract:We present a new methodology for determining the strong coupling constant, $\alpha_s$, from the inclusive semi-leptonic decay width of $B$ mesons. We express the semi-leptonic $B$ decay width as a function of $\alpha_s$(5 GeV), the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa matrix element $|V_{cb}|$, $b$- and $c$-quark masses in the $\overline{\mathrm{MS}}$ scheme. The method fixes the value of $|V_{cb}|$ according to the recent measurement from Belle based on exclusive $B$ decays and uses the PDG averages for the $b$- and $c$-quark masses. By fitting $\alpha_s(5\mathrm{\,GeV})$ to current world averages of the $B^{\pm}$ and $B^{0}$ semi-leptonic decay widths, the analysis obtains $\alpha_s(5\mathrm{\,GeV}) = 0.225 \pm 0.012$, corresponding to a 5-flavor extrapolation of $\alpha_s(m_{Z}) = 0.121 \pm 0.003$. Taking into account future results from higher-order perturbative QCD calculations, heavy quark masses derived from lattice QCD, and measurements of $|V_{cb}|$ as well as $B$ decay widths from upcoming $B$ and $Z$ factory data, this method could yield a determination of $\alpha_s(m_{Z})$ with a competitive precision of $\Delta\alpha_s(m_{Z}) \sim 0.0018$. This precision is comparable to the current accuracy of $\alpha_s(m_{Z})$ measurements from $\tau$ decays, which is regarded as the most precise approach.

Abstract:We review the ALPHA collaboration strategy for obtaining the QCD coupling at high scale. In the three-flavor effective theory it avoids the use of perturbation theory at $\alpha > 0.2$ and at the same time has the physical scales small compared to the cutoff $1/a$ in all stages of the computation. The result $\Lambda_\overline{MS}^{(3)}=332(14)$~MeV is translated to $\alpha_\overline{MS}(m_Z)=0.1179(10)(2)$ by use of (high order) perturbative relations between the effective theory couplings at the charm and beauty quark "thresholds". The error of this perturbative step is discussed and estimated as $0.0002$.

Abstract:Until recently, determinations of alpha_s(M_Z) from hadronic tau decays and the analysis of short-distance-sensitive lattice observables yielded results which, though precise, were not in good agreement. I review new analyses that bring these into good agreement and provide some details on the source of the main changes in the tau decay analysis.

QCD condensates and $α_s$ from $τ$-decay

Abstract:We improve the determinations of the QCD condensates within the SVZ expansion in the axial-vector (A) channel using the ratio of Laplace sum rule (LSR) ${\cal R}_{10}^A(\tau)$ within stability criteria and $\tau$-like higher moments ${R}_{n,A}$ within stability for arbitrary $\tau$-mass squared $s_0$. We find the same violation of the factorization by a factor 6 of the four-quark condensate as from $e^+e^- \to$ Hadrons data. One can notice a systematic alternate sign and no exponential growth of the size of these condensates. Then, we extract $\alpha_s$ from the lowest $\tau$-decay like moment and find: $\alpha_s(M_\tau)\vert_{V+A}=0.3135(83)$ (FO) and 0.3322 (81) (CI) leading to: $\alpha_s(M_Z)\vert_{V+A}=0.1177(10)_{fit}(3)_{evol.}$ (FO) and $0.1200(9)_{fit}(3)_{evol.}$\,(CI). We extend the analysis to the V+A channel and find: $ \alpha_s(M_\tau)\vert_{V+A}=0.3135(83)$ (FO) and 0.3322 (81) (CI) leading to: $\alpha_s(M_Z)\vert_{V+A}=0.1177(10)_{fit}(3)_{evol.}$ (FO) and $0.1200(9)_{fit}(3)_{evol.}$\,(CI). We observe that in different channels ($e^+e^-\to$ Hadrons, \, A,\,V+A), the extraction of $\alpha_s(M_\tau)$ at the observed $\tau$-mass leads to an overestimate of its value. Our determinations from these different channels lead to the mean: $ \alpha_s(M_\tau)=0.3140(44)$ (FO) and 0.3346 (35) (CI) leading to: $\alpha_s(M_Z)=0.1178(6)_{fit}(3)_{evol.}$ (FO) and $0.1202(4)_{fit}(3)_{evol.}$(CI). Comparisons with some other results are done.

Determining $α_s(m_Z)$ from Thrust with Power Corrections

Abstract:We update and extend a previous N$^3$LL$^\prime$+${\cal O}(\alpha_s^3)$ strong coupling determination from thrust data. In particular, we carry out a fit with data fully restricted to the dijet region seeking to minimize the potential impact of power corrections that go beyond dijet configurations. In addition, we parametrize deviations from the dijet power correction in order to add an additional source of uncertainty in the result for $\alpha_s(m_Z)$. We also show that the inclusion of resummation is important to achieve stability with respect to varying the fit region.

Abstract:1. I update my previous comparison of the theoretical value of the muon anomaly with the new measurement and found $\Delta a_\mu\equiv a_\mu^{exp}-a_\mu^{th} = (143\pm 42_{th}\pm 22_{exp})\times 10^{-11}$ which is about 3$\sigma$ discrepancy between the SM predictions and experiment. 2. I improve the estimate of QCD power corrections up to dimension D=12 and provide a new estimate of the ones up to D=20 within the SVZ expansion by combining the ratio of the Laplace sum rules (LSR) with the BNP $\tau$-like decay moments for the I=1 vector current. The results in Table 1 confirm a violation of the factorization of the four-quark condensates and the value of the gluon one $ <\alpha_s G^2>$ from some other sources. Up to D=20, I there is not any factorial nor exponential growth of the size of these power corrections. 3. I use these new values of power corrections to extract $\alpha_s$ from the BNP lowest moment. To order $\alpha_s^4$, I find within the SVZ expansion: $\alpha_s(M_\tau)= 0.3081(50)_{fit}(71)_{\alpha_s^5}$ [resp. $0.3260 (47)_{fit}(62)_{\alpha_s^5}]$ implying $\alpha_s(M_Z)= 0.1170(6)(3)_{evol}$ [resp. $0.1192(6)(3)_{evol}$] for Fixed Order (FO) [resp. Contour Improved (CI)] PT series. They lead to the mean: $ \alpha_s(M_\tau)\vert_{SVZ}=0.3179(58)_{fit}(81)_{syst}$ and $ \alpha_s(M_Z)\vert_{SVZ}= 0.1182(12)(3)_{evol}$ where the systematic error(syst) takes into account the discrepancy between FO and CI. Using the lowest BNP moment, we also obtain from the vector (V) component of $\tau$-decay the mean: $ \alpha_s(M_\tau)\vert_{\tau,V}=0.3219(52)(91)_{syst}$ giving: $\alpha_s(M_Z)\vert_{\tau,V}=0.1187(13)(3)_{evol}$. The average of the two determinations leads to: $ \alpha_s(M_\tau)=0.3198(72)$ and $\alpha_s(M_Z)= 0.1185(9)(3)_{evol}$. 4. Some contributions beyond the SVZ expansion ($1/Q^2$, instantons and duality violation) expected to be small are discussed in Sections 10,11.

Measurement of alpha-s from energy-energy correlations at the Z0 resonance

Abstract:We have determined the strong coupling alpha-s from a comprehensive study of energy-energy correlations (EEC) and their asymmetry (AEEC) in hadronic decays of Z0 bosons collected by the SLD experiment at SLAC. The data were compared with all four available predictions of QCD calculated up to O(alpha-s**2) in perturbation theory, and also with a resummed calculation matched to all four of these calculations. We find large discrepancies between alpha-s values extracted from the different O(alpha-s**2) calculations. We also find a large renormalization scale ambiguity in alpha-s determined from the EEC using the O(alpha-s**2) calculations; this ambiguity is reduced in the case of the AEEC, and is very small when the matched calculations are used. Averaging over all calculations, and over the EEC and AEEC results, we obtain alpha-s(MZ)=0.124+0.003-0.004(exp.) +-0.009(theory).

Abstract:Abstract We present a study of the global event shape variables thrust and heavy jet mass, of energy-energy correlations and of jet multiplicities based on 250 000 hadronic Z 0 decays. The data are compared to new QCD calculations including resummation of leading and next-to-leading logarithms to all orders. We determine the strong coupling constant α s (91.2 GeV) = 0.125±0.003 (exp) ± 0.008 (theor). The first error is the experimental uncertainty. The second error is due to hadronization uncertainties and approximations in the calculations of the higher order corrections.

Abstract:The strong coupling alpha_s(M_Z^2) has been measured using hadronic decays of Z^0 bosons collected by the SLD experiment at SLAC. The data were compared with QCD predictions both at fixed order, O(alpha_s^2), and including resummed analytic formulae based on the next-to-leading logarithm approximation. In this comprehensive analysis we studied event shapes, jet rates, particle correlations, and angular energy flow, and checked the consistency between alpha_s(M_Z^2) values extracted from these different measures. Combining all results we obtain alpha_s(M_Z^2) = 0.1200 \pm 0.0025(exp.) \pm 0.0078(theor.), where the dominant uncertainty is from uncalculated higher order contributions.
Consistent Measurements of alpha_s from Precise Oriented Event Shape Distributions

Abstract:An updated analysis using about 1.5 million events recorded at $\sqrt{s} = M_Z$ with the DELPHI detector in 1994 is presented. Eighteen infrared and collinear safe event shape observables are measured as a function of the polar angle of the thrust axis. The data are compared to theoretical calculations in ${\cal O} (\alpha_s^2)$ including the event orientation. A combined fit of $\alpha_s$ and of the renormalization scale $x_{\mu}$ in $\cal O(\alpha_s^2$) yields an excellent description of the high statistics data. The weighted average from 18 observables including quark mass effects and correlations is $\alpha_s(M_Z^2) = 0.1174 \pm 0.0026$. The final result, derived from the jet cone energy fraction, the observable with the smallest theoretical and experimental uncertainty, is $\alpha_s(M_Z^2) = 0.1180 \pm 0.0006 (exp.) \pm 0.0013 (hadr.) \pm 0.0008 (scale) \pm 0.0007 (mass)$. Further studies include an $\alpha_s$ determination using theoretical predictions in the next-to-leading log approximation (NLLA), matched NLLA and $\cal O(\alpha_s^2$) predictions as well as theoretically motivated optimized scale setting methods. The influence of higher order contributions was also investigated by using the method of Padé approximants. Average $\alpha_s$ values derived from the different approaches are in good agreement.

New extraction of alpha_s(MZ) from proton DIS data

Abstract:An exploratory study for a new determination of the strong coupling constant alpha_s(MZ) from existing world data on the proton structure function F2p in the Q**2-range from ~ 5 to ~ 120 (GeV/c)**2 is presented. The main features of our approach are: 1) the use of low-order Nachtmann moments evaluated with a direct contribution from data larger than 70% of the total; 2) the inclusion of high-order perturbative effects through the soft gluon resummation technique; 3) a direct control over higher-twist effects; and 4) the independence from any specific choice of the x-shape of the input parton distributions. At next-to-leading order we get alpha_s(MZ) = 0.1209 +/- 0.0010 (stat.) +/- 0.0015 (syst.) with a significant dependence upon the order of the moment used. Including soft gluon effects we obtain alpha_s(MZ) = 0.1188 +/- 0.0010 (stat.) +/- 0.0014 (syst.) with a remarkable better stability against the order of the moment. Our findings are compared with recent DIS determinations of alpha_s(MZ) and directions for future improvements are discussed.

Abstract:The analysis of the procedure of the determining the parameters of the hadron elastic scattering amplitude at high energy is presented. The exponential and non-exponential form of the scattering amplitude are taken into account. Abstract:A new global QCD analysis of DIS data is presented. The \nu Fe and \bar{\nu}Fe differential cross-section data are included to constrain the strange component of the nucleon sea. As a result we found a hard strangeness at high-x and some evidence for an asymmetry between xs(x) and x\bar{s}(x).

Abstract:Measurements of transverse energy$-$energy correlations and their associated azimuthal asymmetries in multijet events are presented. The analysis is performed using a data sample corresponding to 139 $\mbox{fb$^{-1}$}$ of proton$-$proton collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of $\sqrt{s} = 13$ TeV, collected with the ATLAS detector at the Large Hadron Collider. The measurements are presented in bins of the scalar sum of the transverse momenta of the two leading jets and unfolded to particle level. They are then compared to next-to-next-to-leading-order perturbative QCD calculations for the first time, which feature a significant reduction in the theoretical uncertainties estimated using variations of the renormalisation and factorisation scales. The agreement between data and theory is good, thus providing a precision test of QCD at large momentum transfers $Q$. The strong coupling constant $\alpha_s$ is extracted differentially as a function of $Q$, showing a good agreement with the renormalisation group equation and with previous analyses. A simultaneous fit to all transverse energy$-$energy correlation distributions across different kinematic regions yields a value of $\alpha_\mathrm{s}(m_Z) = 0.1175 \pm 0.0006 \mbox{ (exp.)} ^{+0.0034}_{-0.0017} \mbox{ (theo.)}$, while the global fit to the asymmetry distributions yields $\alpha_{\mathrm{s}}(m_Z) = 0.1185 \pm 0.0009 \mbox{ (exp.)} ^{+0.0025}_{-0.0012} \mbox{ (theo.)}$.
