Abstract:The latest experimental and theoretical developments in the high-precision determination of the strong coupling $\alpha_s$ are briefly reviewed. Six groups of observables: (i) lattice QCD data, (ii) hadronic $\tau$ decays, (iii) deep-inelastic $e^\pm p$ data and parton distribution functions (PDF) fits, (iv) event shapes and jet rates in $e^+e^-$ collisions, (v) Z boson hadronic decays, and (vi) top-quark cross sections in pp collisions, are used to extract the current world-average at the Z pole mass, $\alpha_s(m_Z^2) = 0.1181 \pm 0.0011$ at next-to-next-to-leading-order (NNLO), or beyond, accuracy. Additional NNLO extractions have recently appeared based on new lattice studies, the $R(s)$ ratio in $e^+e^-\to \mbox{hadrons}$, updated PDF fits, energy-energy correlations in $e^+e^-$ collisions, jet cross sections in $e^\pm p$ collisions, and the full set of $pp\to t\bar{t}$ cross sections at the LHC. Inclusion of these new data into the world-average would slightly increase its value and reduce its uncertainty to $\alpha_s(m_Z^2) = 0.1183 \pm 0.0008$. Future $\alpha_s$ extraction perspectives with permille uncertainties at future high-luminosity $e^+e^-$ machines -- via W and Z hadronic decays, parton fragmentation functions, and photon $F_2(x,Q^2)$ structure function in $\gamma\gamma$ collisions -- are also discussed.
Consistent Measurements of alpha_s from Precise Oriented Event Shape Distributions

Abstract:An updated analysis using about 1.5 million events recorded at $\sqrt{s} = M_Z$ with the DELPHI detector in 1994 is presented. Eighteen infrared and collinear safe event shape observables are measured as a function of the polar angle of the thrust axis. The data are compared to theoretical calculations in ${\cal O} (\alpha_s^2)$ including the event orientation. A combined fit of $\alpha_s$ and of the renormalization scale $x_{\mu}$ in $\cal O(\alpha_s^2$) yields an excellent description of the high statistics data. The weighted average from 18 observables including quark mass effects and correlations is $\alpha_s(M_Z^2) = 0.1174 \pm 0.0026$. The final result, derived from the jet cone energy fraction, the observable with the smallest theoretical and experimental uncertainty, is $\alpha_s(M_Z^2) = 0.1180 \pm 0.0006 (exp.) \pm 0.0013 (hadr.) \pm 0.0008 (scale) \pm 0.0007 (mass)$. Further studies include an $\alpha_s$ determination using theoretical predictions in the next-to-leading log approximation (NLLA), matched NLLA and $\cal O(\alpha_s^2$) predictions as well as theoretically motivated optimized scale setting methods. The influence of higher order contributions was also investigated by using the method of Padé approximants. Average $\alpha_s$ values derived from the different approaches are in good agreement.

Abstract:We review the ALPHA collaboration strategy for obtaining the QCD coupling at high scale. In the three-flavor effective theory it avoids the use of perturbation theory at $\alpha > 0.2$ and at the same time has the physical scales small compared to the cutoff $1/a$ in all stages of the computation. The result $\Lambda_\overline{MS}^{(3)}=332(14)$~MeV is translated to $\alpha_\overline{MS}(m_Z)=0.1179(10)(2)$ by use of (high order) perturbative relations between the effective theory couplings at the charm and beauty quark "thresholds". The error of this perturbative step is discussed and estimated as $0.0002$.
Determinations of alpha_s using JADE data of e^+e^- Annihilations at sqrt{s} = 22 to 44 GeV

Abstract:Data recorded by the JADE experiment at the PETRA e^+e^- collider were used to measure distributions of new event shape observables. The distributions were compared with resummed QCD calulations (O(alpha_s^2)+NLLA), and the strong coupling constant alpha_s was determined at \sqrt{s}= 22, 35 and 44 GeV. The results are in agreement with previous combined results of PETRA but have smaller uncertainties. Together with corresponding data from LEP, the energy dependence of alpha_s is significantly tested and is found to be in good agreement with the QCD expectation.

Abstract:Event shape distributions in $e^+e^-$ annihilation are determined from the DELPHI data taken between 183 and 207\gev. From these the strong coupling $\alpha_s$ is extracted with several techniques. Together with the results from other LEP2 energies and at about $m_Z$ this allows both, a combined measurement of $\alpha_s$ and a test of the scale dependence of the strong interaction. Alternatively the renormalisation group invariant (RGI) perturbation theory is applied to measure the $\beta$ function of strong interaction. The results are good agreement with the QCD expectation and allow to exclude the existence of light gluinos with a mass below 30\gev in a model independent way.
Extracting $α_\mathrm{S}$ at future $e^+e^{-}$ Higgs factory with energy correlators

Abstract:The prospected sensitivity in $\alpha_\mathrm{S}$ determination using an event shape observable, ratio of energy correlators at future electron-positron collider is presented. The study focuses on the collinear region which has suffered from large theoretical and hadronization uncertainty in the past. The ratio effectively reduces the impacts of the uncertainties. With the amount of data that future electron-positron collider could produce in 1 minute (40 $\text{pb}^{-1}$) and 0.5 hour (1 $\text{fb}^{-1}$), a 1% and 0.2% precision of $\alpha_\mathrm{S}$ could be reached.

Abstract:Results are presented from a study of the structure of high energy hadronic events recorded by the L3 detector at sqrt(s)>192 GeV. The distributions of several event shape variables are compared to resummed O(alphaS^2) QCD calculations. We determine the strong coupling constant at three average centre-of-mass energies: 194.4, 200.2 and 206.2 GeV. These measurements, combined with previous L3 measurements at lower energies, demonstrate the running of alphaS as expected in QCD and yield alphaS(mZ) = 0.1227 +- 0.0012 +- 0.0058, where the first uncertainty is experimental and the second is theoretical.
Measurement of alpha-s from energy-energy correlations at the Z0 resonance

Abstract:We have determined the strong coupling alpha-s from a comprehensive study of energy-energy correlations (EEC) and their asymmetry (AEEC) in hadronic decays of Z0 bosons collected by the SLD experiment at SLAC. The data were compared with all four available predictions of QCD calculated up to O(alpha-s**2) in perturbation theory, and also with a resummed calculation matched to all four of these calculations. We find large discrepancies between alpha-s values extracted from the different O(alpha-s**2) calculations. We also find a large renormalization scale ambiguity in alpha-s determined from the EEC using the O(alpha-s**2) calculations; this ambiguity is reduced in the case of the AEEC, and is very small when the matched calculations are used. Averaging over all calculations, and over the EEC and AEEC results, we obtain alpha-s(MZ)=0.124+0.003-0.004(exp.) +-0.009(theory).

QCD condensates and $α_s$ from $τ$-decay

Abstract:We improve the determinations of the QCD condensates within the SVZ expansion in the axial-vector (A) channel using the ratio of Laplace sum rule (LSR) ${\cal R}_{10}^A(\tau)$ within stability criteria and $\tau$-like higher moments ${R}_{n,A}$ within stability for arbitrary $\tau$-mass squared $s_0$. We find the same violation of the factorization by a factor 6 of the four-quark condensate as from $e^+e^- \to$ Hadrons data. One can notice a systematic alternate sign and no exponential growth of the size of these condensates. Then, we extract $\alpha_s$ from the lowest $\tau$-decay like moment and find: $\alpha_s(M_\tau)\vert_{V+A}=0.3135(83)$ (FO) and 0.3322 (81) (CI) leading to: $\alpha_s(M_Z)\vert_{V+A}=0.1177(10)_{fit}(3)_{evol.}$ (FO) and $0.1200(9)_{fit}(3)_{evol.}$\,(CI). We extend the analysis to the V+A channel and find: $ \alpha_s(M_\tau)\vert_{V+A}=0.3135(83)$ (FO) and 0.3322 (81) (CI) leading to: $\alpha_s(M_Z)\vert_{V+A}=0.1177(10)_{fit}(3)_{evol.}$ (FO) and $0.1200(9)_{fit}(3)_{evol.}$\,(CI). We observe that in different channels ($e^+e^-\to$ Hadrons, \, A,\,V+A), the extraction of $\alpha_s(M_\tau)$ at the observed $\tau$-mass leads to an overestimate of its value. Our determinations from these different channels lead to the mean: $ \alpha_s(M_\tau)=0.3140(44)$ (FO) and 0.3346 (35) (CI) leading to: $\alpha_s(M_Z)=0.1178(6)_{fit}(3)_{evol.}$ (FO) and $0.1202(4)_{fit}(3)_{evol.}$(CI). Comparisons with some other results are done.

Abstract:Abstract We present a study of the global event shape variables thrust and heavy jet mass, of energy-energy correlations and of jet multiplicities based on 250 000 hadronic Z 0 decays. The data are compared to new QCD calculations including resummation of leading and next-to-leading logarithms to all orders. We determine the strong coupling constant α s (91.2 GeV) = 0.125±0.003 (exp) ± 0.008 (theor). The first error is the experimental uncertainty. The second error is due to hadronization uncertainties and approximations in the calculations of the higher order corrections.

Abstract:We present a projection study for the first moments of the inclusive spin structure function for the proton and neutron from simulated doubly-polarized e+p and e+3He collision data expected from the Electron-Ion collider. For detection and extraction of the neutron spin asymmetries from e+3He collisions, we used the double-tagging method which significantly reduces the uncertainty over the traditional inclusive method. Using the Bjorken sum rule, the projected results allow us to determine that the QCD coupling at the Z-pole alpha_s can be measured with a relative precision of 1.3%. This underscores the significance of the EIC for achieving precision determinations of alpha_s.

Abstract:The strong coupling alpha_s(M_Z^2) has been measured using hadronic decays of Z^0 bosons collected by the SLD experiment at SLAC. The data were compared with QCD predictions both at fixed order, O(alpha_s^2), and including resummed analytic formulae based on the next-to-leading logarithm approximation. In this comprehensive analysis we studied event shapes, jet rates, particle correlations, and angular energy flow, and checked the consistency between alpha_s(M_Z^2) values extracted from these different measures. Combining all results we obtain alpha_s(M_Z^2) = 0.1200 \pm 0.0025(exp.) \pm 0.0078(theor.), where the dominant uncertainty is from uncalculated higher order contributions.

Abstract:We present the details and first results of a new strategy for the determination of $\alpha_s(m_Z)$. By simultaneously decoupling 3 fictitious heavy quarks we establish a relation between the $\Lambda$-parameters of three-flavor QCD and pure gauge theory. Very precise recent results in the pure gauge theory can thus be leveraged to obtain the three-flavour $\Lambda$-parameter in units of a common decoupling scale. Connecting this scale to hadronic physics in 3-flavour QCD leads to our result in physical units, $\Lambda^{(3)}_{\bar{\rm MS}} = 336(12)\, {\rm MeV}$, which translates to $\alpha_s(m_Z) = 0.11823(84)$. This is compatible with both the FLAG average and the previous ALPHA result, with a comparable, yet still statistics dominated, error. This constitutes a highly non-trivial check, as the decoupling strategy is conceptually very different from the 3-flavour QCD step-scaling method, and so are their systematic errors. These include the uncertainties of the combined decoupling and continuum limits, which we discuss in some detail. We also quantify the correlation between both results, due to some common elements, such as the scale determination in physical units and the definition of the energy scale where we apply decoupling.

Abstract:A study of scaling violations in fragmentation functions performed by the ALEPH collaboration at LEP is presented. Data samples enriched in uds, c, b and gluon jets, respectively, together with measurements of the longitudinal and transverse inclusive cross sections are used to extract the fragmentation function for the gluon and for each flavour. The measurements are compared to data from experiments at energies between 22 GeV and 91 GeV and scaling violations consistent with QCD predictions are observed. From this, a measurement of the strong coupling constant αs(Mz) = 0.126 ±0.009 is obtained.

Abstract:An investigation of the polar angle distribution of charged hadrons is presented using data taken by the JADE experiment at the PETRA e^+e^- collider at centre-of-mass energies of 35 and 44 GeV. From fits to the polar angle distribution the longitudinal, sigma_L, and transverse, sigma_T, cross-section relative to the total hadronic are determined at an average energy scale of 36.6 GeV. The results are sigma_L/sigma_tot = 0.067 +/- 0.013, sigma_T/sigma_tot = 0.933 -/+ 0.013 where total errors are given and the results are exactly anti-correlated. Using the next-to-leading order QCD prediction for the longitudinal cross-section, the value alpha_S(36.6 GeV) = 0.150 +/- 0.025 of the strong coupling constant is obtained in agreement with the world average value of alpha_S evolved to an energy scale of 36.6 GeV.

Abstract:Data from e+e- annihilation into hadrons collected by the JADE experiment at centre-of-mass energies between 14 GeV and 44 GeV were used to study the four-jet rate as a function of the Durham algorithm's resolution parameter y_cut. The four-jet rate was compared to a QCD NLO order calculations including NLLA resummation of large logarithms. The strong coupling constant measured from the four-jet rate is alpha_S(M_Z) = 0.1169 +/- 0.0004 (stat) +/- 0.0012 (expt) +/- 0.0021 (had) +/- 0.0007 (theo), alpha_S(M_Z) = 0.1169 +/- 0.0026 (total error) in agreement with the world average.

Abstract:Using the Mark-J detector at the high-energy ${e}^{+}{e}^{\ensuremath{-}}$ collider PETRA, we compare the data from hadron production with the complete second-order QCD calculation over the energy region 22 to 46.78 GeV. We determine the QCD parameter $\ensuremath{\Lambda}=100\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}{30}_{\ensuremath{-}45}^{+60}$ MeV which yields the strong-coupling constant ${\ensuremath{\alpha}}_{s}=0.12\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.02$ for $\sqrt{s}=44$ GeV.
