Abstract:This work presents a numerical study of the thermal behavior of a lithium-ion battery in the presence of PCM inside the porous medium. For this purpose, the lattice Boltzmann method with optimal two-relaxation-time has been used to eliminate the non-physical numerical diffusion in the solid-liquid interface. Due to the large difference between the thermal conductivity of the solid matrix and the phase change material, the local thermal non-equilibrium condition has been applied. Also, the contact thermal resistance is considered between the PCM and battery. After ensuring the correctness of the simulations, the effect of porosity, thickness of the PCM, ambient temperature and contact resistance on the battery temperature and melting process is investigated. The results show that at the same time as the porosity decreases and the thermal conductivity increases, the temperature of the battery decreases. On the other hand, the further reduction of porosity reduces the amount of PCM and the latent heat storage capacity, which increases the temperature of the battery. For this reason, the biggest decrease in battery temperature is caused by the porous medium with a porosity of 0.8. The results show that as long as the PCM is not completely melted, increasing the thickness of the PCM leads to a decrease in the maximum temperature of the battery. It is also shown that the thermal management system with porous-enhanced PCM keeps the temperature of the battery low in hot environmental conditions. But it may keep the battery temperature abnormally low in cold environments.
