Abstract:Sodium-ion batteries (SIBs) with low cost and high safety are considered as an electrochemical energy storage technology suitable for large-scale energy storage. Hard carbon, which is inexpensive and has both high capacity and low sodium storage potential, is regarded as the most promising anode for commercial SIBs. However, the commercialization of hard carbon still faces technical issues of low initial Coulombic efficiency, poor rate performance, and insufficient cycling stability, due to the intrinsically irregular microstructure of hard carbon. To address these challenges, the rational design of the hard carbon microstructure is crucial for achieving high-performance SIBs, via gaining an in-depth understanding of its structure–performance correlations. In this context, our review firstly describes the sodium storage mechanism from the perspective of the hard carbon microstructure's formation. We then summarize the state-of-art development of hard carbon, providing a critical overview of emergence of hard carbon in terms of precursor selection, microstructure design, and electrolyte regulation to optimize strategies for addressing practical problems. Finally, we highlight directions for the future development of hard carbon to achieve the commercialization of high-performance SIBs. We believe this review will serve as basic guidance for the rational design of hard carbon and stimulate more exciting research into other types of energy storage devices.
Biomass‐Derived Phosphorus‐Doped Porous Hard Carbon Anode for Stable and High‐Rate Sodium Ion Batteries

Abstract:Biomass‐derived hard carbon, despite being promising for anode material of sodium‐ion batteries, usually suﬀer from low initial coulombic efficiency (ICE), poor rate capacity, and limited cycling stability caused by complex surface defects and low intrinsic conductivity. Herein, phosphorus‐doped porous hard carbon (HC@PC‐P) were synthesized by the thermal polymerization of soy lecithin on the surfaces of hard carbon derived from olive kernels. The incorporation of heteroatom phosphorus in the porous hard carbon framework expands the carbon lattice spacing, optimizes the graphitization degree, and increases electrical conductivity, guaranteeing ensuring rapid electron and ion transfer. These coupling effects enable HC@PC‐P anode to achieve a high reversible capacity of 350 mAh g‐1 at 0.1 A g‐1, an impressive initial coulombic efficiency of 89.6%, and remarkable long‐term cycling stability at 1 A g‐1 over 1000 cycles with negligible capacity fade. The mechanisms behind sodium storage and enhanced electrochemical performance were elucidated by ex‐situ Raman spectroscopy and kinetic analysis. Additionally, the assembled HC@PC‐P//Na3V2(PO4)3 full cell demonstrated a high energy density of 257.9 Wh kg‐1. This work provides a rational guide for designing advanced hard carbon anode materials for high‐energy sodium‐ion batteries.
Hard carbons derived from pine nut shells as anode materials for Na-ion batteries

Abstract:Hard carbons as promising anode materials for Na-ion batteries (NIBs) have captured extensive attention because of their low operation voltage, easy synthesis process, and competitive specific capacity. However, there are still several disadvantages, such as high cost and low initial coulombic efficiency, which limit their large-scale commercial applications. Herein, pine nut shells (PNSs), a low-cost biomass waste, are used as precursors to prepare hard carbon materials. Via a series of washing and heat treatment procedures, a pine nut shell hard carbon (PNSHC)-1400 sample has been obtained and delivers a reversible capacity of around 300 mAh/g, a high initial coulombic efficiency of 84%, and good cycling performance. These excellent Na storage properties indicate that PNSHC is one of the most promising candidates of hard carbon anodes for NIBs.

Abstract:A series of hard-soft carbon composite materials is produced from biomass and oil waste and applied as low-cost anodes for sodium-ion batteries to study the fundamentals behind the dependence of Na storage on their structural features. A good reversible capacity of 282 mAh g(-1) is obtained at a current density of 30 mA g(-1) with a high initial Coulombic efficiency of 80% at a carbonization temperature of only 1000 degrees C by adjusting the ratio of hard to soft carbon. The performance is superior to the pure hard or soft carbon anodes produced at the same temperatures. This synergy between hard and soft carbon resulting in an excellent performance is due to the blockage of some open pores in hard carbon by the soft carbon, which suppresses the solid electrolyte interface formation and increases the reversible sodium storage capacity.

Abstract:Hard carbon is one of the most promising anode materials for sodium-ion batteries (SIBs). However, it still suffers from low specific capacity and poor rate capability, which impede its practical application. Herein, one-dimensional hard carbon/graphene microfibers are synthesized by encapsulating hard carbon particles in graphene nanosheet using a wet-spinning technique followed by pyrolysis treatment. Benefiting from the unique structure, when used as the anode material for SIBs, the as-obtained hard carbon/graphene microfibers not only exhibit a high reversible capacity of 321 mAh g(-1) at 0.1 C but also deliver long cycling stability and excellent rate capability, maintaining its capacity as 203 mAh g(-1) even after 350 cycles at 1 C. In addition, the sodium storage mechanism of the as-prepared hard carbon/graphene microfibers is investigated by in-situ Raman technique. Moreover, a full cell adopting the hybrid microfiber as the anode and Na3V2(PO4)(3) as the cathode exhibits high specific capacities of 291 mAh g(-1) and 204 mAh g(-1) at 0.2 C and 4 C (vs. anode), respectively. This work provides a sustainable and cost-effective strategy for the synthesis of high-capacity and stable hard carbon anode materials.

Abstract:Hard carbon (HC) stands out as the preeminent anode material for sodium-ion batteries (SIBs) which are deployed in expansive energy storage infrastructures. Herein, the large enough graphene nanosheets interlayer and abundant nanopores with a diameter of ∼2.1 nm induced by adjusting the pyrolysis temperature in the thermosetting phenolic resin-derived hard carbon matrix to augment the performance of the sodium ion storage. The presence of sufficiently large carbon interlayers has been proven to provide active sites for reversible adsorption, enabling effective storage of sodium ions in the high-voltage slope region, while also promoting rapid Na + transport. Meanwhile, forming abundant closed nanopores with larger sizes helps sodium ion storage in the low-voltage plateau region. In the optimized samples, the formation of sufficient long graphene nanosheets with a perfect crystal lattice, which further shrinks to form enclosed nanopores, effectively reduces defective sites and specific surface area. Additionally, the appropriate content of C-O and C=O functional groups contributes to an exceptional initial Coulombic efficiency (ICE) of up to 93%. Simultaneously, the optimized sample HC-1500 contributes to a remarkable plateau capacity of 294 mAh g - 1 during the charging process (high reversible capacity of 403 mAh g - 1 at 0.1 C). Moreover, based on the microstructure evolution and Na storage behavior of hard carbon, an "adsorption (27%) – filling (73%)" sodium storage mechanism that the sodium storage as a quasi-metallic sodium state is demonstrated. Consequently, this study will offer valuable insights for the development of hard carbon anodes tailored for high-energy practical SIBs, while also advancing the understanding of sodium storage mechanisms.

Abstract:Hard carbon is a promising anode material for sodium-ion batteries (SIBs) due to its abundance. However, it exhibits low reversible capacity and slow kinetics if inappropriate microstructural features are developed during synthesis. Herein, N/S co-doped phenolic resin-based hard carbon microspheres are prepared by a scalable strategy, and the electrochemical performance is assessed both in half cells and full cells. We demonstrate that the expanded interlayer spacing, the increased active sites, and the enhanced capacitive behavior result in the enhanced reversible capacity and promoted kinetics for Na+ storage. The sample with appropriate doping amount exhibits an initial charge capacity of 536.8 mAh g-1 at 50 mA g-1 and maintains 445.9 mAh g-1 after 1000 cycles at a current density of 1 A g-1 in a Na-metal half cell. Coupled with a carbon-coated Na4Fe3(PO4)2P2O7 (NFPP) cathode, the full cell exhibits a capacity of 92.5 mAh g-1 after 90 cycles, with a capacity retention of 91.6 %. This work provides a facile and scalable method for synthesizing high-performance hard carbon anode materials for SIBs.

Abstract:A porous hard carbon material was synthesized by the simple pyrolysis of H3PO4-treated biomass, i.e., pomelo peels, at 700 °C in N2. The as-obtained hard carbon had a 3D connected porous structure and a large specific surface area of 1272 m2 g−1. XPS analysis showed that the carbon material was functionalized by O-containing and P-containing groups. The porous hard carbon was used as an anode for sodium ion batteries and exhibited good cycling stability and rate capability, delivering a capacity of 181 mA h g−1 at 200 mA g−1 after 220 cycles and retaining a capacity of 71 mA h g−1 at 5 A g−1. The sodium storage mechanisms of the porous hard carbon can be explained by Na+ intercalation into the disordered graphene layers, redox reaction of the surface O-containing functional groups and Na+ storage in the nanoscale pores. However, the porous hard carbon demonstrated a low coulombic efficiency of 27%, resulting from the formation of a solid electrolyte interphase film and the side reactions of surface phosphorus groups.

Abstract:A low-cost and sustainable anode material is essential for the future commercialization of sodium-ion batteries (SIBs). Among all proposed anode materials for SIBs, hard carbons are considered to hold the most promise. However, high cost and low carbon yield of precursors limit its industrialization process. Here the synthesis of a biomass-derived hard carbon from leonardite humic acid (LHA) through a facile process was reported. The obtained hard carbons with an amazing high carbon yield of 60.73% were evaluated as anode for SIBs. The LHA-based hard carbons exhibit a promising anode performance with a sodium storage capacity of 345 mAh g(-1), an initial coulombic efficiency up to 73% and superior cyclic stability. Combined with the facile synthesis process and abundant resource, the LHA-based hard carbons may hold a promising future as anode materials for SIBs. (C) 2017 Published by Elsevier Ltd.

Abstract:Hard carbon made from biomass-based precursors has many advantages as anode for sodium-ion batteries such as low cost and sustainability. In this work, three different hard carbon materials derived from bamboo, wood and coconut shell with the same particle size are screened, combining acid etching and carbonization at 1200 degrees C, to compare the sodium ion storage performances. The anode material originated from bamboo shows the highest specific capacity among them. Subsequently, the hard carbon from bamboo is optimized by the same process, but changing the carbonization temperature ranging from 1000 degrees C to 1400 degrees C. Among the hard carbon materials, the bamboo-derived one prepared at 1300 degree celsius exhibits excellent electrochemical performances at a current density of 30 mA g-1, with a high reversible specific capacity of 303.8 mAh/g and an initial coulombic efficiency of 83.7 %. After 150 cycles, a capacity retention of 94.7 % is achieved at a current density of 300 mA g-1. This work provides a potential hard carbon anode for sodium-ion batteries to realize large-scale energy storage due to the cheap sources of bamboo.
Graphene-coated micro/nanostructure hard carbon with improved electrochemical performance for sodium-ion battery

Abstract:Surface area and conductivity are important indexes for the hard carbon as the anode for a sodium-ion battery. Through a different treatment, pine needle derived bulk and micro/nanostructured hard carbons were obtained, respectively. Due to some Na-ions could be stored in the nanopores, the small surface area of the bulk amorphous carbon (1.2 m2 g−1) resulted in a low capacity than that of micro/nanostructure carbon (141 m2 g−1). In order to further improve the performance, rGO coating is employed for the micro/nanostructure carbon by a one-step high temperature annealing process. Due to the enhanced electrical conductivity, the composite displays the capacity of 281 mAh g−1 at 20 mA g−1, which is improved by 68%. Well rate performance and long-cycle stability are also obtained. Considering the improved performance and bio-renewable advantage, the micro/nanostructure hard carbon derived from pine needle coated with rGO would be a suitable anode material for SIBs.

Abstract:Sodium-ion batteries (SIBs) have drawn more attention to serve as one of the promising energy storage devices owing to the abundance of sodium resources and similar characters with lithium element. Hard carbon materials derived from biomass or biomass waste have been considered to act as candidate anode materials for SIBs. In this paper, we have successfully prepared curly hard carbon materials using pistachio shells as biomass template via a two-step approach including hydrothermal treatment and following a pyrolysis process at various temperatures. Physical properties of pistachio shell-derived hard carbons (PSHCs) including microstructure, morphology and pore size distribution are evaluated by X-ray diffraction, Raman spectrum and N2 sorption analysis. The PSHCs carbonized at 1000 °C (PSHC-1000) with average micropores of 0.7398 nm and larger interlayer space of the (002) crystal plane deliver the highest reversible capacity of 317 mAh g−1 at 0.1C, also show the excellent long-term cycling and rate performances. Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy technology is introduced to study the kinetics parameters during the first sodiation process of PSHC-1000 electrode, and also to compare the resistance of the charge transfer process for all the PSHCs. Results exhibit PSHC-1000 electrode with the symmetry factor of 0.1352 has the smallest charge transfer resistance, leading to more easily transportation of electrons and ions. This work can provide a simple and green route for preparation of hard carbon materials derived from biomass waste with unique morphology and microstructure which can exhibit an excellent electrochemical performance.

Abstract:Hard carbon is currently believed to be the most promising anode material for commercial sodium-ion batteries. However, the sodium-ion storage mechanism of hard carbons remains ambiguous due to the unclear relationship between their microstructures and sodium-ion storage performance. This work reports several hard carbons with different pore structures by the carbonization of different lignin precursors, and further studies the relationship between their microstructures and sodium-ion storage performance. Corn cob lignin, pine lignin, and acetylated pine lignin with different molecular structures were selected as the precursors for the preparation of hard carbons. It is found that hard carbon prepared by corn cob lignin has the highest closed pore volume, resulting in the highest plateau capacity. The formation of closed pores is due to the formation of micropores at low pyrolysis temperatures. The micropores then transform into closed pores at high carbonization temperatures. N2 adsorption/desorption, CO2 adsorption/desorption, and small-angle X-ray scattering are used to analyze the pore architectures of the obtained hard carbons, and a method for calculating the closed pore volume is proposed. It is found that the plateau capacity is positively correlated with the closed pore volume.

Abstract:This study used pre‐treatment and template carbonization methods to extract a hard carbon material from a large amount of discarded biomass in bamboo powder waste. Template activation method produces rich and uniform pore structures that are beneficial for sodium storage. Efficient energy storage systems are crucial for the optimal utilization of renewable energy. Sodium‐ion batteries (SIBs) are considered potential substitutes for next‐generation low‐cost energy storage systems due to the low cost and abundance of sodium resources. However, the industrialization of SIBs faces a great challenge in terms of the anode. Hard carbon could be a promising anode material due to its high capacity and low cost which originates from biomass. This study used pre‐treatment and template carbonization methods to extract a hard carbon material from a large amount of discarded biomass in bamboo powder waste. This material has a good initial Coulombic efficiency of 78.6 % and good cycling stability when applied to sodium ion batteries.Typically, the optimal hard carbon material is used as the anode to prepare sodium ion battery prototypes to demonstrate their potential applications. The anode exhibited excellent sodium storage performance with a reversible capacity of 303 mAh ⋅ g−1 at 1 C rate and good cycling performance, retaining 92.0 % of its capacity after 100 cycles. These results demonstrate that BPPHC is a promising candidate for anode material in sodium‐ion batteries. This work suggests that bamboo powder could be a low‐cost anode material for SIBs.

Abstract:Hard carbon is one of the most promising anodic materials for sodium ion batteries (SIBs) because of its low charge/discharge voltage platform, high specific surface area and higher layer spacing. However, the disadvantages of its unsatisfied sodium storage capacity and high cost owing to low carbonization yield of precursors frustrate its practical use. In this paper, we have developed a hierarchical porous hard carbon derived from rice husks (HCRH) synthesized via NaOH solution impregnation method combined with reflux and carbonization at different temperature. This kind of hard carbon kept the natural porous structure of rice husk, and the rich porous structure increased the active site of Na + , shortened the diffusion distance of Na + , and promoted the transport of electrolyte. As an anode for SIBs, the HCRH carbonization at 1200 °C (HCRH-1200) with a suitable graphite layer spacing (0.382 nm)delivered the highest capacity of 328.4 mAh g −1 after 100 cycles at 25 mA g −1 . This study could provide a simple method to prepare high performance anode materials for sodium ion batteries using biomass rice husk as carbon source, and this design strategy could be extended to other biomass-based carbon materials.

Abstract:The intercalation/deintercalation of Na+ in the hard carbon (HC) has been widely investigated for the construction of high performances sodium-ion batteries (SIBs). In this work, a variety of sulfur-doped HCs were obtained by simple pyrolysis of the sublimated sulfur and the camphor tree (S-Cmph) derived material. When used as anode for SIBs, the S-Cmph-700 (pyrolyzed at 700°C) delivered a capacity of 616.7 mAh/g with an ICE of 66.61 %, high than that of the untreated material pyrolyzed at 1500°C (50.11 %) (Cmph-1500). Furthermore, excellent rate performance with specific capacities of 372.3, 323, 282.6, 252.6, 221, 181.2 mAh/g at 40, 80, 200, 400, 800 and 2000 mA g−1 can be achieved, respectively. When the current density returned at 40 mA g−1, the anode recovered a specific capacity of 356.8 mAh/g. In addition, the as-acquired anode material exhibited good cycling performance with a reversible capacity of 145.6 mAh/g over 500 cycles at 2000 mA g−1. The improved electrochemical performances of Cmph-HC anode can be attributed to the benefit of the S-doping, leading to the increase of the interlayer spacing of the anode material, which facilitates the intercalation/deintercalation of Na+ ions in the interlayer spacing of the HC material, and provided more active sites in the Cmph-HC anode for the Na+ ions storage. In addition, sulfur can reversibly react with Na+, limiting the irreversible consumption of Na+ and increase the intercalation rate of Na+ inside the anode material. This work presents a low cost, simple and effective way to synthesize a high performances anode material for the commercialization of SIBs.

The Induced Formation and Regulation of Closed-Pore Structure for Biomass Hard Carbon As Anode in Sodium-Ion Batteries

Abstract:Biomass hard carbon is regarded as an advanced anode materials for sodium ion batteries (SIBs) since it possesses balanced performance including satisfactory specific capacity, suitable operating voltage window and low cost. Although numerous instances of utilizing biomass-derived hard carbon in SIBs have been observed, the unregulated pore structure of these hard carbon materials significantly constrains the electrochemical performance of SIBs, leading to diminished initial Columbic efficiency (ICE) and plateau capacity. Herein, taking a biomass hard carbon derived from waste camellia seed shells (CSSHCs) as a template, we display a correlation between synthesis conditions and pore structure of CSSHCs. CSSHCs are synthesized via a facile route including pre-carbonization, purifying, mechanical ball-milling and high-temperature carbonization, and it is found that adjusting the secondary calcination temperature can induce the formation of closed pore structure, which is of great benefit to increase the ICE and the plateau-capacity. Besides, it is also proved that the obtained CSSHCs anodes obey a sodium storage mechanism that can be classified as "adsorption-intercalation-pore filling", which endows SIBs with a competitive electrochemical performance. Specifically, the obtained biomass hard carbons at 1300 degrees C exhibits the best electrochemical performance among these anodes with the reversible capacity of as high as 270.0 mAh g(-1 )and a high ICE of 80.1 %, together with an excellent cycle stability (91.0 % capacity retention after 200 cycles at 0.1C, 1C = 300 mA g(-1)). Therefore, this study provides a significant exploration and raw material support for the further utilization of the waste biomass and sustainable development of the anode materials for the large-scale application of SIBs.

Abstract:Emerging sodium‐ion batteries (NIBs) and potassium‐ion batteries (KIBs) show promise in complementing lithium‐ion battery (LIB) technology and diversifying the battery market. Hard carbon is a potential anode candidate for LIBs, NIBs and KIBs due to its high capacity, sustainability, wide availability, and stable physicochemical properties. Herein, a series of hard carbons are synthesized by hydrothermal carbonization and subsequent pyrolysis at different temperatures to finely tune their structural properties. When tested as anodes, the hard carbons exhibit differing ion storage trends for Li, Na and K, with NIBs achieving the highest reversible capacity. Extensive materials and electrochemical characterizations are carried out to study the correlation of structural features with electrochemical performance, and to explain the specific mechanisms of alkali‐ion storage in hard carbons. In addition, the best‐performing hard carbon is tested against a sodium cathode Na3V2(PO4)3 in a Na‐ion pouch cell, displaying a high power density of 2172 W kg−1 at an energy density of 181.5 Wh kg−1 (based on the total weight of active materials in both anode and cathode). The Na‐ion pouch cell also shows stable ultralong‐term cycling (9000 hours or 5142 cycles) and demonstrates the promising potential of such materials as sustainable, scalable anodes for beyond Li‐batteries.
