Magneto-optical metasurfaces for high-Q perfect absorption with quasi-bound states in the continuum

Abstract:We present a novel, to the best of our knowledge, magneto-optical (MO) metasurface composed of a bismuth iron garnet (BIG) nanocube array, designed to achieve near-perfect absorption through quasi-bound states in the continuum (QBICs). This metasurface supports a stable QBIC mode induced by MO-induced permittivity terms that break the symmetry of the permittivity tensors, corresponding to a longitudinal electric dipole (ED) mode. By integrating graphene to introduce material loss, the absorption reaches 99.6% at a wavelength of 1512.3 nm with a Q factor of 9440, despite monolayer graphene's inherent absorption being only 2.3%. The inherent transverse ED background mode, with high reflection and low Q, helps decrease the radiative loss of the QBIC mode, allowing the structure to surpass the 50% absorption limit. This approach offers a simplified pathway for designing high-Q metasurface perfect absorbers, with potential applications in optical switches and modulators.

Abstract:The Q factor in a quasi-BIC-based optical device can approach infinity and has therefore been attracting the attention of many researchers in recent years. However, this mode is barely applied to absorbers since it mainly tunes the radiative loss. The resonant wavelength of quasi-BICs normally couples with the Q factor, and it is difficult to independently tune one of them while maintaining the other, which weakens the flexibility of tuning. In this work, a quasi-BIC-based high-Q perfect absorber with some unique features is proposed. It shows a decoupled relationship between the resonant wavelength and the Q factor such that these two properties can be independently tuned by changing different structure parameters. In addition, both radiative and resistive losses are tunable. An easy method is proposed to design a perfect absorber with different resonant wavelengths and different Q factors, and a near-infrared perfect absorber with a Q factor as high as 5.13 × 105 is designed. This work proposes a method to tune the quasi-BIC mode, thereby introducing a new paradigm for the design of a high-Q perfect absorber.
High-Q All-Dielectric Metasurface: Super and Suppressed Optical Absorption

Abstract:All-dielectric metasurface absorbers are good candidates for realizing near-unity light absorption within subwavelength-thin nanostructures. However, only moderate quality factor (Q-factor, e.g., Q similar to 10) all-dielectric metasurface absorbers have been demonstrated due to high radiative loss of the supported Mie resonances. Here, we theoretically propose a high-Q crystalline silicon metasurface superabsorber with near-unity absorption in the near-infrared region by utilizing the dipole quasi bound states in the continuum (quasi-BIC) resonances with engineered radiative loss. The designed all-dielectric metasurface superabsorber shows high-Q (similar to 640) near-unity absorption in the near-infrared region. Moreover, when the superstrate refractive index is different from that of the substrate, the anticrossing behavior of the induced dipole quasi-BIC resonances can be observed in the absorption spectra. This design applies to arbitrary high-refractive-index low-loss materials at various working bands, enabling practical applications of high-Q all-dielectric ultrathin superabsorbers in optical sensing, optical filtering, and photon detection.
Bound states in the continuum enabling ultra-narrowband perfect absorption

Abstract:Resonant dielectric metasurfaces have been demonstrated to hold a great promise for manipulation of light-wave dispersion at the nanoscale due to their resonant photonic environment and high refractive index. However, the efficiency of devices based on dielectric nanostructures is usually limited by the quality (Q) factor of their resonant modes. The physics of the bound sates in the continuum (BICs) provide an elegant solution for control over the Q factor of resonant modes. Here, by engineering the substrate of Si-based metasurfaces, we demonstrate two eigenmodes that exhibit an intrinsic magnetic dipole character and have an infinite radiation lifetime. We reveal that they are characterized by in-plane and out-of-plane magnetic dipole modes and respectively correspond to two groups of BICs, that is, Fabry–Pérot BICs and symmetry-protected BICs. Using temporal coupled-mode theory and numerical simulations, we show that these BIC modes can transform into high-Q quasi-BIC resonances with near-unity absorption under normal incidence through tuning structural parameters. Our work provides a promising route to use BIC-inspired metasurfaces for designing ultra-narrowband absorbers which can be used as absorption filters, photodetectors, and sensors.

Abstract:High-Q absorption in all-dielectric photonics boosts the fundamental study of light-matter interactions at the nanoscale and has potential applications in biomedical science, nonlinear optics, and thermophotonics. In contrast to the demonstrated high-Q (Q-factors > 105) transmission in non-absorbing all-dielectric photonics, the reported experimental Q-factors in absorbing all-dielectric photonics are extremely limited (Q-factors < 170) due to the challenge of simultaneously engineering radiative and non-radiative losses. Here, we demonstrate a design paradigm for high-Q all-dielectric absorption by combining a weakly absorptive film with a metamirror. The metamirror with dispersive reflection selectively enhances the absorptance in the film around the Fabry-Perot frequency, allowing the realization of high-Q absorption. As a proof of concept, a near-infrared all-dielectric absorber, which consists of a low-loss germanium film and a silicon metamirror with quasi-bound states in the continuum mode, is experimentally demonstrated with a Q-factor of 282 and an absorptance of 66.5%. Engineering Q-factors in absorbing all-dielectric photonics promotes the development of sensing, photodetecting, light-emitting diodes, and thermal emission devices.

Abstract:Active devices play a critical role in modern electromagnetic and photonics systems. To date, the epsilon (ε)-near-zero (ENZ) is usually integrated with the low Q-factor resonant metasurface to achieve active devices, and enhance the light-matter interaction significantly at the nanoscale. However, the low Q-factor resonance may limit the optical modulation. Less work has been focused on the optical modulation in the low-loss and high Q-factor metasurfaces. Recently, the emerging optical bound states in the continuum (BICs) provides an effective way for achieving high Q-factor resonators. In this work, we numerically demonstrate a tunable quasi-BICs (QBICs) by integrating a silicon metasurface with ENZ ITO thin film. Such a metasurface is composed of five square holes in a unit cell, and hosts multiple BICs by engineering the position of centre hole. We also reveal the nature of these QBICs by performing multipole decomposition and calculating near field distribution. Thanks to the large tunability of ITO's permittivity by external bias and high-Q factor enabled by QBICs, we demonstrate an active control on the resonant peak position and intensity of transmission spectrum by integrating ENZ ITO thin films with QBICs supported by silicon metasurfaces. We find that all QBICs show excellent performance on modulating the optical response of such a hybrid structure. The modulation depth can be up to 14.8 dB. We also investigate how the carrier density of ITO film influence the near-field trapping and far-field scattering, which in turn influence the performance of optical modulation based on this structure. Our results may find promising applications in developing active high-performance optical devices.

Abstract:The exceptional resonances excited by symmetry-protected quasi-bound states in the continuum (QBICs) have provided significant potential in high-sensitive sensing applications. Herein, we have proposed a type of metal-insulator-metal (MIM) absorbers supported by QBIC-induced resonances, and the ideal Q-factors of QBIC-induced resonances can be enhanced up to 10(5) in the THz regime. The coupled mode theory and the multipole scattering theory are employed to thoroughly interpret the QBIC-induced absorption mechanism. Furthermore, the refractive index sensing capacities of the as-presented absorbers have been investigated, where the maximum values of the sensing sensitivity and figure of merit (FOM) can reach up to 187 GHz per refractive index unit and 286, respectively. Therefore, it is believed that the proposed absorbers enabled by QBIC-induced resonances hold promising potential in a broad range of highly demanding sensing applications. Robust Ultrahigh‐Q Quasi‐Bound States in the Continuum in Metasurfaces Enabled by Lattice Hybridization

Abstract:Taking advantage of the two in‐plane mirror‐symmetry points of the all‐dielectric metasurfaces formed by lattice hybridization, it is realized, for the first time, the transition between two symmetry‐protected bound states in the continuum (BICs), the toroidal dipole BIC and the electric quadrupole BIC. This results in robust quasi‐BICs with ultrahigh minimum Q factors even when the asymmetry parameter varies over the full range of all possible values. Bound states in the continuum (BICs) have been of growing interest in photonics for their infinite quality factors and strong field localization. The last decade has witnessed great progress on the highest achievable quality factors of quasi‐BICs. However, it remains challenging to realize robust high‐Q quasi‐BICs that are tolerant to the parameter perturbation. Here, it is demonstrated that silicon metasurfaces formed by the hybridization of two lattices can support robust quasi‐BICs with the highest measured quality factor reaching 4130 and the minimum one larger than 1024, even when the relative displacement varies over the whole range of all the possible values. Taking advantage of the two in‐plane mirror‐symmetry points, for the first time, the transition between a toroidal dipole BIC and an electric quadrupole BIC, which guarantees robust ultrahigh‐Q quasi‐BICs at Γ point, is reported. The minimum quality factors of quasi‐BICs can be further improved significantly by shrinking the meta‐atom size and are immune from the intrinsic absorption loss of silicon in the visible regime. It is envisioned that this study will pave the way for achieving robust ultrahigh‐Q metasurfaces and boost their applications in lasing, nonlinear optics, and biosensing.

Broadband Perfect Optical Absorption by Coupled Semiconductor Resonator-Based All-Dielectric Metasurface

Abstract:Resonance absorption mechanism-based metasurface absorbers can realize perfect optical absorption. Further, all-dielectric metasurface absorbers have more extensive applicability than metasurface absorbers that contain metal components. However, the absorption peaks of the all-dielectric metasurface absorbers reported to date are very sharp. In this work, we propose a broadband optical absorption all-dielectric metasurface, where a unit cell of this metasurface is composed of two coupled subwavelength semiconductor resonators arrayed in the direction of the wave vector and embedded in a low-index material. The results indicate that the peak absorption for more than 99% is achieved across a 60 nm bandwidth in the short-wavelength infrared region. This absorption bandwidth is three times that of a metasurface based on the conventional design scheme that consists of only a single layer of semiconductor resonators. Additionally, the coupled semiconductor resonator-based all-dielectric metasurface shows robust perfect absorption properties when the geometrical and material parameters—including the diameter, height, permittivity, and loss tangent of the resonator and the vertical and horizontal distances between the two centers of the coupled resonators—are varied over a wide range. With the convenience of use of existing semiconductor technologies in micro/nano-processing of the surface, this proposed broadband absorption all-dielectric metasurface offers a path toward realizing potential applications in numerous optical devices.

Flexible terahertz metasurface absorbers empowered by bound states in the continuum

Abstract:Terahertz absorbers are crucial to the cutting-edge techniques in the next-generation wireless communications, imaging, sensing, and radar stealth, as they fundamentally determine the performance of detectors and cloaking capabilities. It has long been a pressing task to find absorbers with customizable performance that can adapt to various environments with low cost and great flexibility. Here, we demonstrate perfect absorption empowered by bound states in the continuum (BICs) allowing for the tailoring of absorption coefficient, bandwidth, and field of view. The one-port absorbers are interpreted using temporal coupled-mode theory highlighting the dominant role of BICs in the far-field radiation properties. Through a thorough investigation of BICs from the perspective of lattice symmetry, we unravel the radiation features of three BIC modes using both multipolar and topological analysis. The versatile radiation capabilities of BICs provide ample freedom to meet specific requirements of absorbers, including tunable bandwidth, stable performance in a large field of view, and multi-band absorption using a thin and flexible film without extreme geometric demands. Our findings offer a systematic approach to developing optoelectronic devices and demonstrate the significant potential of BICs for optical and photonic applications which will stimulate further studies on terahertz photonics and metasurfaces.

High-Q Quasibound States in the Continuum for Nonlinear Metasurfaces

Abstract:Sharp electromagnetic resonances play an essential role in physics in general and optics in particular. The last decades have witnessed the successful developments of high-quality (Q) resonances in microcavities operating below the light line, which however is fundamentally challenging to access from free space. Alternatively, metasurface-based bound states in the continuum (BICs) offer a complementary solution of creating high-Q resonances in devices operating above the light line, yet the experimentally demonstrated Q factors under normal excitations are still limited. Here, we present the realizations of quasi-BIC under normal excitation with a record Q factor up to 18 511 by engineering the symmetry properties and the number of the unit cells in all-dielectric metasurface platforms. The high-Q quasi-BICs exhibit exceptionally high conversion efficiency for the third harmonic generation and even enable the second harmonic generation in Si metasurfaces. Such ultrasharp resonances achieved in this work may immediately boost the performances of BICs in a plethora of fundamental research and device applications, e.g., cavity QED, biosensing, nanolasing, and quantum light generations.
An Enhanced High Q-Factor Resonance of Quasi-Bound States in the Continuum With All-Dielectric Metasurface Based on Multilayer Film Structures

Abstract:Confinement of light is very important to the field of optics, and it is theoretically possible to achieve the perfect confinement for optical modes located in the continuous domain radiation state. Achieving perfect confinement is possible for bound states in the continuum (BIC), which localize waves that lie in the continuous spectrum of the radiative state and remain in a perfect localized state. In this article, we propose a metasurface that consists of arrays of silicon nanoellipsoidal pairs and calculate its transmission spectra and energy bands. Based on an all-dielectric metasurface, a dielectric multilayer film is incorporated to improve the quality factor of the array composed of ellipsoidal table pairs by an order of magnitude. By breaking the symmetry of ellipsoidal table pairs, quasi-BIC resonance modes excited by electric quadrupole (EQ) and magnetic dipoles (MDs) are realized using asymmetric silicon nanoellipsoid surfaces, where the quasi-BIC modes have high ${Q}$ -factors. In this article, the relationship between the structural asymmetry of Fano resonance controlled by symmetry-protect BICs and the radiation ${Q}$ -factor is analyzed and demonstrated theoretically. At the same time, we use quasi-BIC resonances in asymmetric silicon nanoellipsoidal pairs of metasurfaces to achieve a huge Goos–Hänchen (GH) shift enhancement, which exceeds the third-order wavelength and a very large group index to achieve excellent slow-light effects. Our work is centered on the design of simulations for the BIC metasurface. Meanwhile, based on the simulation design results, we propose to advance the application of optical communication devices, BIC sensing, optical switches, and optical modulators.

Terahertz Ultrasensitive Biosensor Based on Wide-Area and Intense Light-Matter Interaction Supported by Qbic

Abstract:A quasi-bound state in the continuum (QBIC) has unique attraction in optical switch, nonlinearity, communication, and sensing due to its ultrahigh radiation quality (Q) factor. The QBIC observed in metasurfaces also provides a feasible platform to achieve in-plane strong light-matter interaction, as well as to develop ultrasensitive biosensor. However, the existing metasurface designs are difficult to realize highly efficient excitation and high-performance sensing of QBIC in terahertz (THz) band. Here, we manipulate the interference coupling between electric quadrupole and magnetic dipole by introducing an asymmetry α into the metallic metasurface structure, which excites ultrahigh quality QBIC resonance with Q factor of up to 503. Correspondingly, light field energy constrained by the metasurface and effective sensing area achieved enormous increases of about 400% and 1300%, respectively, which greatly expands the spatial extent and intensity of light-matter interaction. Simulations and experiments show that the proposed QBIC metasurface deliver a high refractive index sensitivity reaching 420 GHz/RIU, and its direct limit of detection (LoD) for trace homocysteine (Hcy) molecules is 12.5 pmol/μL. Its performance is about 40 times higher than that of the classical Dipole mode. This work provides a new avenue to achieve rapid, precise, and nondestructive sensing of trace molecules, and has potential applications in the fields of biochemical reaction monitoring, photocatalysis and photobiomodulation.
Potential of high Q dual band Mid-Infrared metasurfaces with Quasi-BIC for refractive index sensing

Abstract:Dielectric metasurface supporting quasibound states in the continuum (QBIC) are expected to be applied to high-performance optical devices such as refractive index (RI) sensors, narrow band filters, optical switches, and nonlinear optics due to its ultra-narrow linewidth resonance. Here, we design a metasurface consisting of four parallel-arranged silicon elliptical nanodisks, with a silicon circular nanodisk in its center as a coupler, which can relax the conditions for achieving QBIC. It is found that dual-band mid-infrared high Q resonance is generated when the radius of the circular nanodisk is 370 nm, with Q factors of 12,677 and 4362. Their sensitivities are 604.55 nm/RIU and 2307.57 nm/RIU, with the figure of merit values (FOM) of 1400 RIU −1 and 1792 RIU −1 . The electric field analysis shows that the resonant modes of the structure are electric quadrupole and electric dipole. This work provides a new way to realize high-performance mid-infrared refractive index sensors that are easy to process.

Abstract:As optical resonances with high-quality (Q) factors, bound states in the continuum (BICs) supported in a metamaterial with low optical loss have attracted great interest due to their potential applications in photonic devices with different functionalities. However, most studies focus on the influence of the symmetry breaking in the constituent elements on the Q factors of the quasi-BICs, and less attention is paid to the coupling between the constituent elements. Here, we investigate numerically and experimentally the quasi-BICs revealed in metasurfaces composed of regularly arranged silicon (Si) nanoparticles with and without a geometric symmetry. It is found that the quasi-BICs appear in the transmission spectra of the metasurfaces as Fano lineshapes with different asymmetry parameters, depending strongly on the relative locations of the two optical modes involved in the interference. Apart from symmetry-protected BICs dominated by optical modes that radiate only in the direction parallel to the metasurface, accidental BICs at-Γ formed by the destructive interference of two optical modes are also revealed. The leakage of the quasi-BICs in the direction of light incidence originates from the interference of such modes with other optical modes existing in the same spectral range, which limits the maximum Q factors of the quasi-BICs. Consequently, quasi-BICs with high-Q factors (1010 to 1013) are also observed in metasurfaces composed of Si nanoparticles with geometric symmetry (or without symmetry breaking). More interestingly, the Q factors of the quasi-BICs in a metasurface composed of Si nanoparticles with symmetry breaking exhibit a strong dependence on the period of the metasurface. An exponential decrease of the Q factor is observed when the period of the metasurface deviates from the value at which the maximum Q factor is achieved, implying the crucial role of mode coupling in determining the Q factor. As a result, the Q factor of a quasi-BIC may not decrease exponentially when the symmetry breaking of the Si nanoparticle is increased. In comparison, the quasi-BICs in a metasurface composed of Si nanoparticles with geometric symmetry are not sensitive to the period of the metasurface. By deliberately choosing the period, the maximum Q factors of the quasi-BICs achieved in the metasurface with symmetry breaking are close to those realized in the metasurface without symmetry breaking. Our findings are important for understanding the physical origin of the so-called symmetry-protected BICs supported by metasurfaces and helpful for designing photonic devices based on quasi-BICs.

Abstract:In recent years, the concept of bound states in continuum (BIC) in metasurfaces has become a topic of interest. BIC involves the physical mechanics of wave optics, metamaterial sensors and other high-quality factor (Q-factor) applications. In this paper, the basic concept of BIC is introduced, followed by a brief description of the progression of the research regarding the application of BIC in terahertz (THz) metasurfaces. Subsequently, an all-dielectric metasurface consisting of tetramer clusters with dual terahertz resonances is proposed. The materials used for the substrate and the tetramer cluster are quartz and silicon, respectively. Quasi-BIC works by varying the cylinder radius on the metasurface structure. The transmission spectra are analyzed under different structural and material parameters with control variables. When the metasurface is applied as a refractive-index sensor, the Q-factor is 2303.77 and the figure of merit (FOM) is 7022.90, which are calculated using the asymmetric parameter k = 0.8 μm. Additionally, when the incident wave is x- or y-polarized, resonance peaks with the same frequencies can be obtained, and the overall trend of the transmission spectrum remains the same.

Abstract:This paper proposes a perfect metamaterial absorber based on a dielectric−dielectric−metal structure, which realizes ultra-narrowband dual-band absorption in the near-infrared band. The maximum Q factor is 484. The physical mechanism that causes resonance is hybrid coupling between magnetic polaritons resonance and plasmon resonance. At the same time, the research results show that the intensity of magnetic polaritons resonance is much greater than the intensity of the plasmon resonance. By changing the structural parameters and the incident angle of the light source, it is proven that the absorber is tunable, and the working angle tolerance is 15°. In addition, the sensitivity and figure of merit when used as a refractive index sensor are also analyzed. This design provides a new idea for the design of high-Q optical devices, which can be applied to photon detection, spectral sensing, and other high-Q multispectral fields.

Abstract:Bound states in the continuum (BICs) correspond to a particular leaky mode with an infinitely large quality-factor (Q-factor) located within the continuum spectrum. To date, most of the research work reported focuses on the BIC-enhanced light matter interaction due to its extreme near-field confinement. Little attention has been paid to the scattering properties of the BIC mode. In this work, we numerically study the far-field radiation manipulation of BICs by exploring multipole interference. By simply breaking the symmetry of the silicon metasurface, an ideal BIC is converted to a quasi-BIC with a finite Q-factor, which is manifested by the Fano resonance in the transmission spectrum. We found that both the intensity and directionality of the far-field radiation pattern can not only be tuned by the asymmetric parameters but can also experience huge changes around the resonance. Even for the same structure, two quasi-BICs show a different radiation pattern evolution when the asymmetric structure parameter d increases. It can be found that far-field radiation from one BIC evolves from electric-quadrupole-dominant radiation to toroidal-dipole-dominant radiation, whereas the other one shows electric-dipole-like radiation due to the interference of the magnetic dipole and electric quadrupole with the increasing asymmetric parameters. The result may find applications in high-directionality nonlinear optical devices and semiconductor lasers by using a quasi-BIC-based metasurface.
