Abstract:Phase retrieval from a single-frame interferogram is a meaningful approach in dynamic and real-time interferometry. However, existing demodulation methods are susceptible to real noise impressions, resulting in low accuracy. This paper proposes an accurate end-to-end learning-based method for one-shot phase retrieval that doesn't require pre-processing (e.g., denoising, normalization) and post-processing (e.g., phase unwrapping). Compared to existing deep learning methods, we incorporate more physical information constraints, contributing to high accuracy and robustness. A realistic noise model that incorporates the speckle noise and the imaging process is introduced to generate training datasets. Furthermore, a subnetwork is adopted for noise estimation, along with a subnetwork for frequency domain decomposition to extract multi-channel physical information. Additionally, a physical information fusion block is established to integrate relevant data, and a reconstruction network based on NAFNet is implemented for comprehensive end-to-end phase retrieval. We validate the accuracy and robustness of our approach through simulations and experiments. Our results demonstrate that the proposed method achieves a phase retrieval accuracy of 0.01 lambda for noisy interferograms, superior to several existing methods that we have reproduced.

Abstract:In many optical metrology techniques, fringe pattern analysis is the central algorithm for recovering the underlying phase distribution from the recorded fringe patterns. Despite extensive research efforts for decades, how to extract the desired phase information, with the highest possible accuracy, from the minimum number of fringe patterns remains one of the most challenging open problems. Inspired by recent successes of deep learning techniques for computer vision and other applications, we demonstrate for the first time, to our knowledge, that the deep neural networks can be trained to perform fringe analysis, which substantially enhances the accuracy of phase demodulation from a single fringe pattern. The effectiveness of the proposed method is experimentally verified using carrier fringe patterns under the scenario of fringe projection profilometry. Experimental results demonstrate its superior performance, in terms of high accuracy and edge-preserving, over two representative single-frame techniques: Fourier transform profilometry and windowed Fourier transform profilometry.

Abstract:Phase retrieval from fringe images is essential to many optical metrology applications. In the field of fringe projection profilometry, the phase is often obtained with systematic errors if the fringe pattern is not a perfect sinusoid. Several factors can account for non-sinusoidal fringe patterns, such as the non-linear input–output response (e.g., the gamma effect) of digital projectors, the residual harmonics in binary defocusing projection, and the image saturation due to intense reflection. Traditionally, these problems are handled separately with different well-designed methods, which can be seen as "one-to-one" strategies. Inspired by recent successful artificial intelligence-based optical imaging applications, we propose a "one-to-many" deep learning technique that can analyze non-sinusoidal fringe images resulting from different non-sinusoidal factors and even the coupling of these factors. We show for the first time, to the best of our knowledge, a trained deep neural network can effectively suppress the phase errors due to various kinds of non-sinusoidal patterns. Our work paves the way to robust and powerful learning-based fringe analysis approaches. © 2021 Chinese Laser Press

Selection of Phase-Recovery Algorithms for Fringe Processing in Optical Measurement of Micro-Surface

Abstract:Success of optical measurement methods such as interferometry, holography and fringe projection methods mainly depends on the availability of robust phase recovery (PR) algorithms. In presence of some problems such as strong noise, abrupt phase changes, low fringe contrast and discontinuities, it's necessary to introduce a highly reliable algorithm to overcome them. As for the experimental phase map from holographic interferometry of China coin's micro-surface, some typical PR algorithms including the proposed (weighted) DCT (Discrete Cosine Transform) are studied to try to recover the satisfactory continuous phase. The experimental phase map (1392x1040 pixels) exhibits the local surface characteristic of one China coin. It features excessive noise and many bad data points. It's very difficult to achieve the continuous phase by the general algorithms. So some robust algorithms are studied to solve this problem. These algorithms include the quality map guided method (QG), (weighted) least square method (LS or WLS), mask cut method (MC) and (weight) DCT method (DCT or WDCT). According to the tested results, the fastest algorithm is the LS method, and it only needs about 10s. The clearest pattern profile results from the DCT and WDCT algorithms that need about 30s and 31s in the consuming time, respectively. However, it's very hard to clearly and completely reflect the smooth top of imprinted letters for all the above algorithms. This could be due to the excessively much noise, the limited resolutions of CCD setup, and so on.

Nevertheless, due to their multi-shot nature, these methods are difficult to apply to dynamic measurements and are more susceptible to external disturbance and vibrations. Thus, for many applications, phase extraction from a single fringe pattern is desired, which falls under the purview of spatial fringe analysis. Recently, we demonstrated that the use of convolutional neural networks can substantially enhance the accuracy of phase demodulation from a single fringe pattern. Moreover, we find the powerful learning ability of deep neural network (DNN) enables the phase unwrapping, super-fast 3D shape measurement of transient events, multi-view fringe projection and so on. From comparative results, the DNN shows better performance over traditional state-of-the-art methods in terms of the phase accuracy and efficiency. We believe the deep learning technique is a powerful technique to handle fringe images and will find wide applications in 3D measurements with structured-light illumination.
Phase Retrieval from A Single Fringe Pattern by Using Empirical Wavelet Transform

Abstract:Phase retrieval from a single fringe pattern is one of the key tasks in optical metrology. In this paper, we present a new method for phase retrieval from a single fringe pattern based on empirical wavelet transform. In the proposed method, a fringe pattern can be effectively divided into three components: nonuniform background, fringes and random noise, which are described in different sub-pass. So the phase distribution information can be robustly extracted from fringes representing a fundamental frequency component. In simulation and a practical projection fringes test, the performance of the present method is successfully verified by comparing with the conventional wavelet transform method in terms of both image quality and phase estimation errors.

Abstract:Recently, deep learning has yielded transformative success across optics and photonics, especially in optical metrology.Deep neural networks (DNNs) with a fully convolutional architecture (e.g., U-Net and its derivatives) have been widely implemented in an end-to-end manner to accomplish various optical metrology tasks, such as fringe denoising, phase unwrapping, and fringe analysis.However, the task of training a DNN to accurately identify an image-to-image transform from massive input and output data pairs seems at best naïve, as the physical laws governing the image formation or other domain expertise pertaining to the measurement have not yet been fully exploited in current deep learning practice.To this end, we introduce a physics-informed deep learning method for fringe pattern analysis (PI-FPA) to overcome this limit by integrating a lightweight DNN with a learning-enhanced Fourier transform profilometry (LeFTP) module.By parameterizing conventional phase retrieval methods, the LeFTP module embeds the prior knowledge in the network structure and the loss function to directly provide reliable phase results for new types of samples, while circumventing the requirement of collecting a large amount of high-quality data in supervised learning methods.Guided by the initial phase from LeFTP, the phase recovery ability of the lightweight DNN is enhanced to further improve the phase accuracy at a low computational cost compared with existing end-to-end networks.Experimental results demonstrate that PI-FPA enables more accurate and computationally efficient single-shot phase retrieval, exhibiting its excellent generalization to various unseen objects during training.The proposed PI-FPA presents that challenging issues in optical metrology can be potentially overcome through the synergy of physics-priors-based traditional tools and data-driven learning approaches, opening new avenues to achieve fast and accurate single-shot 3D imaging.

Abstract:This paper presents a single-shot phase extraction approach based on a deep convolutional generative adversarial network that generates a phase map and a quality mask from an input fringe pattern image. A novel loss function is proposed, and a large-scale (28 800 samples) real fringe pattern dataset is collected to train the network. The experiments demonstrate that the proposed method achieves significantly improved phase extraction accuracy and overcomes the main limitations of Fourier transform profilometry. In addition, the proposed method presents excellent performance for real-time computing, reaching approximately 100 f s(-1) with a single GPU. Moreover, the proposed learning-based approach can automatically perform denoising and phase extraction, without any manually set parameters.

Abstract:Fringe projection profilometry (FPP) has become increasingly important in dynamic 3-D shape measurement. In FPP, it is necessary to retrieve the phase of the measured object before shape profiling. However, traditional phase retrieval techniques often require a large number of fringes, which may generate motion-induced error for dynamic objects. In this paper, a novel phase retrieval technique based on deep learning is proposed, which uses an end-to-end deep convolution neural network to transform a single or two fringes into the phase retrieval required fringes. When the object's surface is located in a restricted depth, the presented network only requires a single fringe as the input, which otherwise requires two fringes in an unrestricted depth. The proposed phase retrieval technique is first theoretically analyzed, and then numerically and experimentally verified on its applicability for dynamic 3-D measurement.

Single-shot Phase Retrieval from a Fractional Fourier Transform Perspective

Abstract:The realm of classical phase retrieval concerns itself with the arduous task of recovering a signal from its Fourier magnitude measurements, which are fraught with inherent ambiguities. A single-exposure intensity measurement is commonly deemed insufficient for the reconstruction of the primal signal, given that the absent phase component is imperative for the inverse transformation. In this work, we present a novel single-shot phase retrieval paradigm from a fractional Fourier transform (FrFT) perspective, which involves integrating the FrFT-based physical measurement model within a self-supervised reconstruction scheme. Specifically, the proposed FrFT-based measurement model addresses the aliasing artifacts problem in the numerical calculation of Fresnel diffraction, featuring adaptability to both short-distance and long-distance propagation scenarios. Moreover, the intensity measurement in the FrFT domain proves highly effective in alleviating the ambiguities of phase retrieval and relaxing the previous conditions on oversampled or multiple measurements in the Fourier domain. Furthermore, the proposed self-supervised reconstruction approach harnesses the fast discrete algorithm of FrFT alongside untrained neural network priors, thereby attaining preeminent results. Through numerical simulations, we demonstrate that both amplitude and phase objects can be effectively retrieved from a single-shot intensity measurement using the proposed approach and provide a promising technique for support-free coherent diffraction imaging.

Abstract:Phase Measuring Deflectometry (PMD) is an effective metrology technique for specular surfaces, but it is hard to achieve rapid measurement precisely with prevenient fringe analysis methods. Inspired by recent successes of deep learning techniques for fringe analysis, we demonstrate for the first time that deep learning can be used to achieve high-precision three-dimensional (3D) measurement of specular surfaces with a single frame. In this research, it is proposed to use depthwise separable convolution to optimize measured results. Experimental results proved that this proposed method has better performance than the existing fringe analysis method employing deep learning.

Abstract:The phase retrieval problem, usually known as reconstructing an estimate of phase object from its diffraction intensity patterns, exists widely in the optical imaging field. In this paper, a deep convolutional neural network (CNN) framework is developed to accomplish the phase reconstruction given a single-shot Fourier measurement, without the requirement of prior knowledge (like nonnegativity and support constraints) or time-consuming iterations. A receptive field and input enhance learning-based design principle is applied to establish the neural network architecture. And a new loss function that combines the structural similarity (SSIM) index and the mean square error (MSE) is taken to further improve the network training. Quantitative (the average SSIM and relative MSE are similar to 0.9900 and 0.0012, respectively) and qualitative (SSIM, ranging from 0.87 to 0.95) phase reconstructions are achieved in the numerical simulation and experiment, respectively. Once the proposed network is well trained, it is convenient for the users to perform the phase reconstruction at a remarkably fast speed (similar to 0.425 s). Moreover, our network is considerably robust to different noises and could be trained to additionally function as a denoiser in the phase retrieval process. In practice, the proposed method is able to build an accurate propagation model of the practical imaging system, and significantly enhance and improve the spatial resolution. With the great convenience and high accuracy of phase recovery, the proposed deep CNN framework may be helpful to solve the phase retrieval problem in Fourier imaging systems, like coherent diffraction imaging (CDI), X-ray imaging, and imaging through diffusers, etc.
A Fringe Phase Extraction Method Based on Neural Network

Abstract:In optical metrology, the output is usually in the form of a fringe pattern, from which a phase map can be generated and phase information can be converted into the desired parameters. This paper proposes an end-to-end method of fringe phase extraction based on the neural network. This method uses the U-net neural network to directly learn the correspondence between the gray level of a fringe pattern and the wrapped phase map, which is simpler than the exist deep learning methods. The results of simulation and experimental fringe patterns verify the accuracy and the robustness of this method. While it yields the same accuracy, the proposed method features easier operation and a simpler principle than the traditional phase-shifting method and has a faster speed than wavelet transform method.

Abstract:Fringe projection profilometry (FPP) has been widely applied in three-dimensional (3D) measurement owing to its high measurement accuracy and simple structure. In FPP, how to effectively recover the absolute phase, especially through a single image, has always been a huge challenge and eternal pursuit. The frequency-multiplex methods can maximize the efficiency of phase unwrapping by mixing the multi-frequency information used to eliminate phase ambiguity in the spectrum. However, spectrum aliasing and the resulting phase unwrapping errors are still pressing difficulties. Inspired by the successful application of deep learning in FPP, we propose a single-shot frequency multiplex fringe pattern for phase unwrapping approach using deep learning. Through extensive data learning, the properly trained neural networks can directly learn to obtain spectrum-aliasing-free phase information and robust phase unwrapping from single-frame compound input. Experimental results demonstrate that compared with convenient frequency-multiplex methods, our deep-learning-based approach can achieve more accurate and stable absolute phase retrieval.

Abstract:In this paper, we propose a single-shot 3D shape measurement with spatial frequency multiplexing using deep learning. Fourier transform profilometry (FTP) is highly suitable for dynamic 3D acquisition and can provide the phase map using a single fringe pattern. However, it suffers from the spectrum overlapping problem which limits its measurement quality and precludes the recovery of the fine details of complex surfaces. Furthermore, FTP adopts the arctangent function ranging between -pi and pi for phase calculation, which results in phase ambiguities in the wrapped phase map with 2 pi phase jumps. Inspired by deep learning techniques, in this study, we use a deep neural network to extract the phase information of the object from one deformed fringe pattern. Meanwhile, we design a dual-frequency fringe pattern with spatial frequency multiplexing to eliminate the phase ambiguities. Therefore, an absolute phase map can be obtained without projecting any additional patterns. The experimental results demonstrate that the single-shot 3D measurement method based on deep learning techniques can effectively realize the absolute 3D measurement with one fringe image and improve the measurement accuracy compared with the traditional Fourier transform profilometry.

Abstract:Fringe projection profilometry (FPP) is widely applied to 3D measurements, owing to its advantages of high accuracy, non-contact, and full-field scanning. Compared with most FPP systems that project visible patterns, invisible fringe patterns in the spectra of near-infrared demonstrate fewer impacts on human eyes or on scenes where bright illumination may be avoided. However, the invisible patterns, which are generated by a near-infrared laser, are usually captured with severe speckle noise, resulting in 3D reconstructions of limited quality. To cope with this issue, we propose a deep learning-based framework that can remove the effect of the speckle noise and improve the precision of the 3D reconstruction. The framework consists of two deep neural networks where one learns to produce a clean fringe pattern and the other to obtain an accurate phase from the pattern. Compared with traditional denoising methods that depend on complex physical models, the proposed learning-based method is much faster. The experimental results show that the measurement accuracy can be increased effectively by the presented method.

Abstract:Three-dimensional (3D) shape acquisition of objects from a single-shot image has been highly demanded by numerous applications in many fields, such as medical imaging, robotic navigation, virtual reality, and product in-line inspection. This paper presents a robust 3D shape reconstruction approach integrating a structured-light technique with a deep learning-based artificial neural network. The proposed approach employs a single-input dual-output network capable of transforming a single structured-light image into two intermediate outputs of multiple phase-shifted fringe patterns and a coarse phase map, through which the unwrapped true phase distributions containing the depth information of the imaging target can be accurately determined for subsequent 3D reconstruction process. A conventional fringe projection technique is employed to prepare the ground-truth training labels, and part of its classic algorithm is adopted to preserve the accuracy of the 3D reconstruction. Numerous experiments have been conducted to assess the proposed technique, and its robustness makes it a promising and much-needed tool for scientific research and engineering applications.

Abstract:In three dimensional profilometry, phase retrieval technique plays a key role in signal processing stage. Fringe images need to be transformed into phase information to obtain the measurement result. In this paper, a new phase retrieval method based on deep learning technique is proposed for interferometry. Different from conventional multi-step phase shift methods, phase information can be extracted from only a single frame of an interferogram by this method. Here, the phase retrieval task is regarded as a regression problem and a hypercolumns convolutional neural network is constructed to solve it. Firstly, functions and each component of the network model are introduced in details; Then, four different mathematical functions are adopted to generate the training dataset; training and validation strategies are also designed subsequently; Finally, optimization processing is performed to eliminate local data defects in initial results with the help of polynomial fitting. In addition, hardware platform based on point diffraction interferometer is fabricated to support this method. Concluded from the experiment section, the proposed method possesses a desirable performance in terms of phase retrieval, denoising and time efficiency.

Abstract:To address the challenge of balancing accuracy and speed in traditional phase unwrapping algorithms, this paper proposes a deep-learning-based single-frame spatial phase unwrapping method. By leveraging extensive data learning, two neural networks are trained to directly acquire phase information and modulation from a singleframe fringe pattern. Then, through the integration of a modulation sorting phase unwrapping algorithm, we achieve high-precision 3D surface reconstruction from a single-frame fringe pattern, thereby enabling rapid object measurement. The experimental results demonstrate the remarkable accuracy of the proposed method in phase unwrapping, approaching the level achieved by the 12-step phase-shifting method. The integration of deep learning into phase unwrapping offers promising prospects for further developments in this area.
