Abstract:The dynamic range of a spectrum-based optical sensor is often limited by the FSR (free spectral range) or the linewidth of the light source. In this paper, nonlinear regression is proposed to realize a larger dynamic range without changing the sensor or the light source. The basic equation of nonlinear regression is firstly analyzed. An application example is also brought out, which is the LiNbO3 integrated asymmetric Mach-Zehnder interference (AMZI) wavelength meter. The FSR of this wavelength meter is 1530 ~ 1564 nm. The test results show that using the nonlinear regression algorithm, the device is competent for wavelengths less than 1530 nm or greater than 1564 nm. In addition, the average absolute measurement error is 13.9 pm, which is better than most integrated wavelength meters. Nonlinear regression is applicable to any spectrum-based optical sensors with a known form of the transfer function, including AMZI, F-P cavity, FBG, and micro ring. It can be superimposed on all existing technologies and can realize the measurement of a variety of physical quantities, such as refractive index sensing, temperature sensing, and pressure sensing.
