Abstract:Metallurgical slag as a by-product of the metallurgical industry not only has huge storage capacity and low price, but also causes serious damage to the environment and threatens the safety of human life by heavy metal in metallurgical slag leaching. The approach of metallurgical slag used to remove pollutants in wastewater is considered to achieve the purpose of "using waste to treat waste". This review focuses on three pretreatment methods of metallurgical slag including acid/alkali pretreatment, mixed pretreatment, and core-shell structure pretreatment, and their structural properties and performance optimization after pretreatment. The removal mechanism of typical pollutants, catalytic performance, reaction conditions, and recyclability of metallurgical slag such as steel slag, blast furnace slag, red mud, copper slag, and manganese slag are summarized and compared.

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
The paper mainly explores the application of metallurgical slag in wastewater treatment and its pretreatment methods. Specifically: 1. **Research Background**: The waste slag produced by the metallurgical industry (such as steel slag, blast furnace slag, red mud, copper slag, and manganese slag) is not only large in quantity and low in cost, but the heavy metals contained in it pose a serious threat to the environment. These heavy metals can leach out and pose a hazard to human health. Therefore, using these waste slags to treat wastewater is considered a "waste-to-treat-waste" strategy. 2. **Pretreatment Methods**: - **Acid-Base Pretreatment**: Treating with sulfuric acid, hydrochloric acid, or nitric acid can increase the specific surface area and pore size of the metallurgical slag, thereby increasing active sites and improving decontamination efficiency. - **Mixed Pretreatment**: Combining metallurgical slag with carbon materials (such as biochar) utilizes its rich metal elements as activators to enhance adsorption performance. - **Core-Shell Structure Pretreatment**: Forming ordered core-shell structure materials through chemical bonds or other forces enhances the photocatalytic efficiency and magnetothermal induction efficiency of the materials. 3. **Applications of Metallurgical Slag**: - **Applications of Steel Slag**: - **Phosphorus Removal**: Utilizing the calcium content in steel slag for the adsorption and precipitation of phosphorus, effectively removing phosphorus from wastewater. - **Lead and Cadmium Removal**: By adjusting the pH value of the solution, steel slag can be used to remove lead and cadmium from water, and it can be recycled and regenerated. - **Chromium Removal**: Using modified steel slag catalysts to remove hexavalent chromium under visible light irradiation. - **Arsenic Removal**: Utilizing the calcium and aluminum in steel slag to form precipitates with arsenic, efficiently removing arsenic from wastewater. - **Organic Dye Removal**: Preparing photocatalysts to degrade organic dyes in wastewater. In summary, this paper aims to systematically summarize and analyze the pretreatment methods and removal effects of metallurgical slag in wastewater treatment, considering the stability and recyclability of the materials, and providing a direction for the comprehensive utilization of metallurgical slag resources.
