Abstract:Soil organic carbon (C) and nitrogen (N) pools are the most important soil components, and their characteristics directly or indirectly determine the stability of the soil structure and the soil fertility. Using a rice fields experiment in the coastal areas of Southeast China, how a long-term (10 years) continuous application of organic materials consisting of green manure (Chinese milk vetch), pig manure, and rice straw affected the soil C and N fractions were studied. The results showed that 10-year continuous applications of organic materials to the paddy fields significantly increased the C fraction content in terms of parameters such as the soil organic C (SOC), microbial biomass C (MBC), and active organic C (AOC). It also increased the soil N fraction content, including the soil total N (TN), dissolved total N (DTN), microbial biomass N (MBN), and active N. The rice straw return had the most significant effect in relation to increasing the SOC and dissolved organic C (DOC), with 23.9% and 42.3% increases, respectively, compared to applying chemical fertilizer alone. Organic pig manure had the most significant effect on the soil MBN and DTN, with 49.3% and 50.7% increases, respectively, compared to the application of chemical fertilizer alone. MBC and MBN are the primary components of soil AOC and active N, respectively. The application of organic materials increased the ratio of soil MBC and AOC to SOC, as well as the ratio of MBN, DTN, and active N to the soil TN. Our findings indicated that long-term applications of organic materials could Improve and enhance paddy soil fertility and promote increased rice yields.

Abstract:Aims: Aerobic rice is a potential crop introduced to encourage water conservation in rice planting. However, a decline of aerobic rice yield has been reported and thus this study was initiated with the aim to observe the response of microbial community in this environment which are exposed to various plant growth stage and soil types. Methodology and results: To determine the effect of soil types such as peat and sandy clay loam on microbial community. A total of four growth stages were tested namely vegetative, reproductive, ripening and maturing. To determine the influence of growth stages and soil types towards microbial community in aerobic rice, Biolog EcoplateTM technique was used to quantify the response of microbial community through microbial functional diversity and carbon source utilization. The abundance of culturable aerobic bacteria, fungi, actinomycetes, nitrogen-fixing microorganism and phosphate-solubilizing microorganism were determined using five different selective media. Soil physical and chemical properties as well as total nitrogen in plant tissues were also determined. It was found that microbial functional diversity during plant growth (except for microbial evenness) varied between the soil types. Correlation analysis revealed different relationships between carbon source utilization and microbial functional diversity in both soil types. Conclusion, significance and impact of study: Microbial community in rhizosphere responded according to plant development which is primarily determined by soil type. Therefore, it is concluded that soil type particularly the soil physical and chemical properties are important factors in shaping the microbial community by directly influencing the rhizosphere environment.

Variation of Soil Microbial Biomass and Enzyme Activities at Different Growth Stages of Rice (oryza Sativa)

Abstract:A pot experiment was conducted under submerged conditions with hybrid rice Zhenong 7 to study the variation in the soil microbial biomass carbon (Cmic), soil microbial biomass nitrogen (Nmic), soil respiration rate, soil microbial metabolic quotient, soil enzyme activities, chlorophyll content, proline content and peroxidase activity (POD) in rice leaf at different growth stages. The soil Cmic, Nmic and soil respiration rate significantly increased at the early stage and then declined during rice growth, but ascended slightly at maturity. However, soil metabolic quotient declined at all the stages. Soil urease activity increased at first and then decreased, while acid phosphatase and dehydrogenase activities descended before ascended and then descended again. Soil urease activity and acid phosphatase activity showed a peak value at the tillering stage about 30 days after rice transplanting, but the peak value of dehydrogenase activity emerged at about 50 days after rice transplanting and the three soil enzymatic activities were significantly different at the different developmental stages. As rice growing, chlorophyll content in rice leaf descended at the early stage then ascended and a peak value appeared at about the 70th after rice transplanting, after that declined drastically, while POD activity increased gradually, but proline content declined gradually. There was a slight relation between rice physiological indices and soil biochemical indices, which indicated that soil biochemical characteristics were affected significantly by rice growth in the interaction system of the rice, soil and microorganisms.
Organic and Inorganic Amendments Shape Bacterial Indicator Communities That Can, In Turn, Promote Rice Yield

Abstract:The dynamic patterns of the belowground microbial communities and their corresponding metabolic functions, when exposed to various environmental disturbances, are important for the understanding and development of sustainable agricultural systems. In this study, a two-year field experiment with soils subjected to: chemical fertilization (F), mushroom residues (MR), combined application of chemical fertilizers and mushroom residues (MRF), and no-fertilization (CK) was conducted to evaluate the effect of fertilization on the soil bacterial taxonomic and functional compositions as well as on the rice yield. The highest rice yield was obtained under MRF. Soil microbial properties (microbial biomass carbon (MBC), microbial biomass nitrogen (MBN), urease, invertase, acid phosphatase, and soil dehydrogenase activities) reflected the rice yield better than soil chemical characteristics (soil organic matter (SOM), total N (TN), total K (TK), available P (AP), available K (AK), and pH). Although the dominant bacterial phyla were not significantly different among fertilizations, 10 bacterial indicator taxa that mainly belonged to Actinobacteria (Nocardioides, Marmoricola, Tetrasphaera, and unclassified Intrasporangiaceae) with functions of xenobiotic biodegradation and metabolism and amino acid and nucleotide metabolism were found to strongly respond to MRF. Random Forest (RF) modeling further revealed that these 10 bacterial indicator taxa act as drivers for soil dehydrogenase, acid phosphatase, pH, TK, and C/N cycling, which directly and/or indirectly determine the rice yield. Our study demonstrated the explicit links between bacterial indicator communities, community function, soil nutrient cycling, and crop yield under organic and inorganic amendments, and highlighted the advantages of the combined chemical and organic fertilization in agroecosystems.

Abstract:Global agricultural intensification leads to a decline in soil quality; however, the extent to which long-term rice cultivation adversely impacts soil, based on chemical and microbial perspectives, remains unclear. The present study was conducted on a seed multiplication farm in Wuchang, Heilongjiang Province, China, to quantify changes in the nutrient properties and microbial profiles of meadow soil in cultivated (rhizosphere and bulk soil) and uncultivated paddy plots from spring to winter. A non-parametric method was used to compare carbon metabolism characteristics among the three groups of soil samples. Principal component analysis was used to distinguish soil chemical properties and carbon source utilization profiles among the soil samples across different seasons. Under rice cultivation, pH, organic matter, total nitrogen, and alkali-hydrolyzed nitrogen concentrations were generally higher in rhizosphere soils than in bulk or uncultivated soils. However, microbial biomass in cultivated soils was consistently lower than in uncultivated soils. There was a discernible difference in carbon substrate preference between summer and other seasons in the three sample groups. In conclusion, agricultural activities in rice cultivation could reshape soil microbial communities in the long term. Notably, specific cultivation activity may induce distinct soil microbial responses, which are more sensitive than chemical responses.
Response of Rice Yield to Organic Amendments Was Regulated by Soil Chemical Properties, Microbial Functional Genes and Bacterial Community Rather Than Fungal Community

Abstract:Integrated fertilization using mineral fertilizer and organic amendments is common practices for sustainable crop production. However, the impacts of different organic amendments on soil chemical properties, function genes, and microbial community, as well as their contribution to rice yield have not been well illustrated. In this study, soil chemical properties, microbial diversity, community structure and stability, and functional genes were evaluated after 10 years of fertilization. Compared with the mineral fertilizer regime, the integrated addition of mineral fertilizer and organic amendments improved soil fertility and increased the grain yield by 0.32 %-11.45 %, in terms of five-year average yield. Bacterial diversity and microbial community stability were significantly improved by organic amendments (p < 0.05). Additionally, organic amendments significantly reshaped the microbial community and increased the relative abundance of beneficial bacteria and fungi, as well as suppressed the growth of plant pathogenic fungi (p < 0.05). Besides, multiple functional genes were upregulated by organic amendments, and had significant relationships with grain yield. Soil chemical properties explained most of the variation in grain yield. PLS-PM result further revealed that functional genes and bacterial community (diversity, composition, and stability), rather than fungal community, which were positively affected by fertilization and soil chemical properties, had a strong influence on grain yield. Overall, organic amendments strongly improved soil chemical properties and function and regulated bacterial community, thus enhancing rice yield.

Abstract:The ecological effect of nitrogen fertilizer with split application on rice rhizosphere microbes was conducted in paddy field of Fuyang,Zhejiang province,China in 2005.The research results indicated that the ecological effect of nitrogen on rice rhizosphere microbes is not only affected by rice rhizosphere microbes population but also affected by the growth of the rice.In general,there is a competition on nutrition between the rice and the rice rhizosphere microbes in the rice tillering stage and filling stage.As a result,the activity of rice rhizosphere microbes descends.The microbial biomass C content in rice rhizosphere changed as the rice grows,which differ from enzyme in the rhizosphere.The microbial biomass C,phosphatase,urease,total protein,total phenol content in rice rhizosphere are affected by split N fertilizer application.There is an obvious difference with N and without N treatment in the latest rice growth periods after fulfillment the N fertilizer.
Dynamics, Biodegradability, and Microbial Community Shift of Water-Extractable Organic Matter in Rice-Wheat Cropping Soil under Different Fertilization Treatments

Abstract:Although fertilization plays an important role in determining the contents of soil dissolved organic matters or water-extractable organic matter (DOM, WEOM), knowledge regarding the dynamics, biodegradability, and microbial community shifts of WEOM in response to different fertilization treatments is very limited, particularly in rice-wheat cropping soil. Thus, in the present study, we performed biodegradation experiments using WEOM extracted from samples of soil that had been subjected to four different fertilization treatments: unfertilized control (CK), chemical fertilizer (CF), 50% chemical fertilizer plus pig manure (PMCF), and 100% chemical fertilizer plus rice straw (SRCF). UV spectrum and fluorescence 3D excitation-emission matrix analyses applied to investigate the chemical composition of WEOM revealed that all examined WEOMs were derived from microbial activity and the dominant portion comprised humic acid-like compounds. After the incubation, 31.17, 31.63, 43.47, and 33.01% of soil WEOM from CK, CF, PMCF, and SRCF treatments, respectively, were biodegraded. PMCF- derived WEOM had the highest biodegradation rate. High-throughput sequencing analyses performed to determine the microbial community before and after the incubation indicated that Sphingomonas, Bacillus, and Flavisolibacter were the predominant bacterial genera in the original inoculum derived from the four fertilization treatments. Following biodegradation, we observed that the dominant bacteria differed according to fertilization treatments: Curvibacter (43.25%) and Sphingobium (10.47%) for CK, Curvibacter (29.68%) and Caulobacter (20.00%) for CF, Azospirillum (23.68%) and Caulobacter (13.29%) for PMCF, and Ralstonia (51.75%) for SRCF. Canonical correspondence analysis revealed that, shifts in the microbial community were closely correlated with pH and specific UV absorbance at 254 nm. We speculated that the inherent traits of different WEOM and the properties of soil solutions under different fertilization treatments shaped the soil microbial community structure, thereby influencing the biodegradation of WEOM. Abstract:A comprehensive understanding of rice cultivation techniques and organic amendments affecting soil quality, enzyme activities and bacterial community structure is crucial. We investigated two planting methods (direct seeding and transplanting) of paddy rice (Oryza sativa) and organic amendments with rice straw and biochar on crop yield and soil biological and physicochemical properties. Rhizosphere bacterial communities at the maturity stage of rice growth were characterized through high-throughput 16S rRNA sequencing. Soil biochemical properties and enzyme activity levels were analyzed. Grain yield of paddy rice with transplanting increased 10.6% more than that with direct seeding. The application of rice straw increased grain yield by 7.1 and 8.2%, more than with biochar and the control, respectively. Compared to biochar and the control, the application of rice straw significantly increased sucrase, cellulase, protease, organic carbon, available phosphorus, nitrate, and ammonium. The application of biochar increased microbial biomass nitrogen and carbon, urease, pH, available nitrogen, and available potassium compared to the application of rice straw and the control. Principal coordinate analysis and dissimilarity distances confirmed significant differences among the microbial communities associated with planting methods and organic amendments. Bacteroidetes , Nitrospirae , Firmicutes , and Gemmatimonadetes abundance increased with rice straw relative to biochar and the control. The biochar addition was associated with significant increases in Chloroflexi , Patescibacteria , Proteobacteria , and Actinobacteria abundance. Pearson's correlation analyzes showed that Chloroflexi , Bacteroidetes and Nitrospirae abundance was positively correlated with grain yield. The relative abundance of these bacteria in soil may be beneficial for improving grain yield. These results suggest that planting methods and organic amendments impact soil biochemical characteristics, enzyme activity levels, and microbial community composition.

Abstract:Soil extracellular enzyme plays a vital role in changing soil nitrogen (N) mineralization of rice field. However, the effects of soil extracellular enzyme activities (EEA) and microbial community composition response to N mineralization of rice field under short-term tillage treatment needed to be further explored. In this study, we investigated the impact of short-term (8-year) tillage practices on rhizosphere soil N transformation rate, soil enzyme activities, soil microbial community structure, and the N mineralization function gene abundances in double-cropping rice field in southern China. The experiment consisted of four tillage treatments: rotary tillage with crop straw input (RT), conventional tillage with crop straw input (CT), no-tillage with crop straw retention (NT), and rotary tillage with all crop straw removed as a control (RTO). The results indicated that the rhizosphere soil N transformation rate in paddy field under the NT and RTO treatments was significantly decreased compared to RT and CT treatments. In comparison to the NT and RTO treatments, soil protease, urease, β-glucosaminidase, and arginase activities were significantly improved by the CT treatment, as were abundances of soil sub, npr, and chiA with CT and RT treatments. Moreover, the overall diversity of soil bacterial communities in NT and RTO treatments was significantly lower than that in RT and CT treatments. Soil chitinolytic and bacterial ureolytic communities were also obviously changed under a combination of tillage and crop straw input practices.

Abstract:Aluminium (Al) toxicity impedes crop growth in acidic soils and is considered the second largest abiotic stress after drought for crops worldwide. Despite remarkable progress in understanding Al resistance in plants, it is still unknown whether and how the soil microbiota confers Al resistance to crops. Here we found that a synthetic community composed of highly Al-resistant bacterial strains isolated from the rice rhizosphere increased rice yield by 26.36% in acidic fields. The synthetic community harvested rhizodeposited carbon for successful proliferation and mitigated soil acidification and Al toxicity through extracellular protonation. The functional coordination between plants and microbes offers a promising way to increase the usage of legacy phosphorus in topsoil. These findings highlight the potential of microbial tools for advancing sustainable agriculture in acidic soils.
Responses of rhizosphere bacterial communities in newly reclaimed mudflat paddies to rice genotype and nitrogen fertilizer rate

Abstract:The rhizosphere microbiome plays a vital role in crop growth and adaptation. However, the effects of rice genotype, nitrogen (N) fertilization, and their interactions on the rhizosphere bacterial communities in low fertility soil remain poorly understood. In this study, a two-factor field experiment was performed in newly reclaimed mudflat paddies characterized by poor fertility to analyze bacterial communities in the rhizosphere of Yongyou 2640 (japonica/indica hybrid rice, JIH) and Huaidao No.5 (japonica conventional rice, JC) under different N fertilizer rates. Results showed that genotype, followed by N fertilizer rate, was the primary factor affecting rhizobacteria diversity. Rhizobacteria diversity was higher in JIH than in JC and that of JIH and JC did not significantly change overall as N fertilizer rates but increased and decreased at N fertilizer rates of over 300 kg N ha −1 , respectively. The inconsistent response was probably attributed to the difference in the increase of ammonium and/or nitrate in the rhizosphere of JIH and JC. Genotype explained approximately 26% of the variation in rhizosphere bacterial communities. Rhizosphere bacterial communities with N fertilizer rates of over 300 kg N ha −1 were more dissimilar to those without N fertilization relative to those with N fertilizer rates of below 300 kg N ha −1 , which was mainly attributed to changes in the concentration of ammonium and/or nitrate. The relative abundances of some potential beneficial genera such as Salinimicrobium , Salegentibacter , Gillisia , and Anaerolinea in the rhizosphere of JC and Salegentibacter , Lysobacter , Nocardioides , and Pontibacter in the rhizosphere of JIH were increased under N fertilizer rates of less than 300 kg N ha −1 and positively correlated with rice yields, which indicate that changes in bacterial communities caused by N fertilization might be strongly associated with the improvement of rice yield. Overall, rhizosphere bacterial communities were more sensitive to genotype in newly reclaimed mudflat paddies and showed a consistent response to N fertilizer rates.

Abstract:Introduction: Currently, straw biodegradation and soil improvement in rice-mushroom rotation systems have attracted much attention. However, there is still a lack of studies on the effects of rice-mushroom rotation on yield, soil properties and microbial succession. Methods: In this study, no treatment (CK), green manure return (GM) and rice straw return (RS) were used as controls to fully evaluate the effect of Stropharia rugosoannulata cultivation substrate return (SRS) on soil properties and microorganisms. Results: The results indicated that rice yield, soil nutrient (organic matter, organic carbon, total nitrogen, available nitrogen and available potassium) and soil enzyme (urease, saccharase, lignin peroxidase and laccase) activities had positive responses to the rice-mushroom rotation. At the interannual level, microbial diversity varied significantly among treatments, with the rice-mushroom rotation significantly increasing the relative alpha diversity index of soil bacteria and enriching beneficial microbial communities such as Rhizobium, Bacillus and Trichoderma for rice growth. Soil nutrients and enzymatic activities were significantly correlated with microbial communities during rice-mushroom rotation. The fungal-bacterial co-occurrence networks were modular, and Latescibacterota, Chloroflexi, Gemmatimonadota and Patescibacteria were closely related to the accumulation of nutrients in the soil. The structural equation model (SEM) showed that fungal diversity responded more to changes in soil nutrients than did bacterial diversity. Discussion: Overall, the rice-mushroom rotation model improved soil nutrients and rice yields, enriched beneficial microorganisms and maintained microbial diversity. This study provides new insights into the use of S. rugosoannulata cultivation substrates in the sustainable development of agroecosystems.

Abstract:Reasonable cropping systems and fertilizer management are vital for improving the quality of barren soil. The effectiveness of different crop rotation methods and fertilizers in soil improvement depends on various factors, including soil type, climate conditions, and crop type. In the present study, based on three rice-based cropping systems, the effects of organic fertilizers combined with slow-release fertilizers on rice yield and soil fertility in reclaimed soil were analyzed. The results showed that the rice grain yield was highest under the rice-fallow rotation system (RF) with the application of rapeseed meal fertilizer. Available nutrients such as AN, N_NH4+, TP, and AK showed a significant positive correlation with rice grain yield (p < 0.05). PCA and PERMANOVA analysis supported significant variation in CAZyme abundance among cropping systems (R2 = 0.60, p = 0.001) and significant differences between slow-release fertilizer treatments and organic fertilizer treatments (p < 0.05), but not among the three organic fertilizer treatments. Network analysis indicated positive stronger correlations among all functional enzymes in organic fertilizer treatments compared to chemical fertilizer treatments. RDA and correlation heat map results showed that C/N ratios and N_NH4+ were strongly related to CAZyme composition. PLS-PM analysis revealed that soil available nitrogen positively influenced several variables, while rice grain yield was negatively influenced by soil enzymes and TOC. These findings suggested that under appropriate cropping systems, partially substituting chemical fertilizers with organic fertilizers can effectively enhance the availability of nutrients in the soil, alter the activity of carbon-cycling microorganisms, and increase rice grain yield.

Abstract:Fertilizer application practices are one of the major challenges facing agroecology. The agrobenefits of combined application of green manure and chemical fertilizers, and the potential of green manure to replace chemical fertilizers are now well documented. However, little is known about the impact of fertilization practices on microbial communities and tice yield. In this study, the diversity of bacterial and fungal communities, symbiotic networks and their relationship with soil function were analyzed in five fertilization treatments (N: 100% nitrogen fertilizer alone; M: green manure alone; MN 60 : green manure couple with 60% nitrogen fertilizer, MN 80 : green manure couple with 80% nitrogen fertilizer; and MN 100 : green manure couple with 100% nitrogen fertilizer). First, early rice yield was significantly higher by 12.6% in MN 100 treatment in 2021 compared with N. Secondly, soil bacterial diversity showed an increasing trend with increasing N fertilizer application after green manure input, however, the opposite was true for fungal diversity. Microbial interaction analysis showed that different fertilizer applications changed soil microbial network complexity and fertilizer-induced changes in soil microbial interactions were closely related to soil environmental changes. Random forest models further predicted the importance of soil environment, microorganisms and rice yield. Overall, nitrogen fertilizer green manure altered rice yield due to its effects on soil environment and microbial communities. In the case of combined green manure and N fertilizer application, bacteria and fungi showed different responses to fertilization method, and the full amount of N fertilizer in combination with green manure reduced the complexity of soil microbial network. In contrast, for more ecologically sensitive karst areas, we recommend fertilization practices with reduced N by 20–40% for rice production.

Abstract:Microorganisms are the most abundant and diverse organisms in soils and have important effects on soil fertility. In this study, effects of the long-term fertilization treatments no fertilizer (CK), chemical fertilizer (nitrogen–phosphorus–potassium (NPK)), and organic–inorganic fertilizer (NPK and organic fertilizer (NPKM)) on rice yield and soil bacterial and fungal community diversity, structure, composition, and interaction networks were evaluated. Of the three treatments, the highest rice yield was in NPKM. Bacterial richness was significantly higher in NPKM than in NPK. Fertilization treatment significantly altered β diversity of communities, species composition of bacterial and fungal communities, and structure of soil microbial networks. The most complex bacterial and fungal interaction co-occurrence network with the highest average degree and numbers of edges and nodes was in NPKM. Relative abundance of the plant growth-promoting fungus Trichoderma increased significantly in NPKM compared with CK and NPK. The results of the study indicate that bacterial richness and microbial community member interactions (network complexity) might be suitable indicators of soil biological fertility. This research provides new insights on the effects of different fertilization regimes on responses of soil bacterial and fungal communities and their contributions to crop yield. New indicators such as bacterial richness and complexity of microbial interaction networks are also identified that can be used to evaluate soil biological fertility.

Abstract:Plant responses to nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) deficiencies differ among genotypes. Although the rhizosphere microbiome can serve as an indicator of plant functional traits across different genotypes, whether and how genotypic differences in plant tolerance to N and P deficiencies are associated with the rhizosphere microbiome are unknown. In this study, we carried out a paddy field experiment using five previously screened rice (Oryza sativa L.) varieties and examined crop yield and mineral element concentrations as well as the chemical properties and bacterial community of bulk and rhizosphere soils in response to N and P deficiencies. The three high-yield rice genotypes were found to be tolerant to N and P deficiencies, whereas the two low-yield genotypes were sensitive. Rhizosphere bacterial community compositions under different fertilization treatments were clearly separated into two groups corresponding to tolerant and sensitive rice. Eighteen bacterial keystone taxa were identified across the five rice genotypes under different N and P conditions. Tolerant rice harbored more bacterial keystone taxa in the rhizosphere under N or P deficiency than did sensitive rice. The specific bacterial keystone taxa recruited by tolerant rice were functionally associated with soil N transformation, plant-promoting activity, carbon decomposition, and iron cycling. These results suggest that bacterial community selection in the rhizosphere is dependent on the tolerance of rice genotypes to N and P deficiencies. The findings help explain the intrinsic mechanism that potentially controls the yield gap of rice genotypes through rhizosphere-driven microbial functions under N/P-limited agroecosystem conditions. The identified bacterial keystone taxa, which are potentially useful bio-fertilizer inoculants for agricultural production and possible indicators of rice genotypes for breeding N- and P-efficient rice cultivars, may ultimately contribute to sustainable agricultural development, resulting in high crop yields while minimizing fertilizer input and environmental risks.

Abstract:Excessive application of nitrogen (N) fertilizer usually causes contamination of soil and groundwater. In this study, the rice yield and soil quality were investigated under different content of N fertilizer and amending organic compost (OC) or (and) crop residue (CR) in five-year wheat-rice rotated fields, and the soil microbial communities were inspected by means of Illumina sequencing. The results showed that rice yields were maintained at a high level although the N fertilizer was reduced to 80% of the normal content with amendment of OC and (or) CR. The PH was decreased and available phosphorus increased whenever the N fertilizer was normally applied or decreased when OC and (or) CR was amended, respectively. Available potassium was significantly increased when N fertilizer was reduced but OC and (or) CR was added. The abundance of bacterial and fungal communities was affected by OC or CR. Function prediction indicated that bacteria involved in DNA repair, carbohydrate digestion and absorption, amino acid degradation, caffeine metabolites were affected by OC or CR. Some plant growth promoting microbes (bacterial genus Pantoea , fungal gena Talaromyces and Scolecobasidium ) were increased when OC or (and) CR was added. In addition, some nitrification or denitrification related bacteria ( Candidatus nitrotoga, Nitrolancea, Noviherbaspirillum, Thioalkalispira ) and fermentative metabolite bacteria ( Lactobacillus ) were increased when N fertilizer was reduced and OC or (and) CR was amended. These microbes may decompose the complex organic matter and improve nutrient transforming cycle to promote plant growth.

Abstract:Chemical and physical properties of soil,growth and development,yield and quality of rice in the field followed annual ryegrass,rye and wheat in agricultural zone in Yangtze River Basin were studied,in order to clarify the effects of different grain and forage crops on the subsequent rice production.The soil properties in ryegrass and rye field were improved.pH was lowered.Total N and available N,P,K were increased.PH was lowered and total N,available N,P were increased in wheat field,while available K was decreased.Thus,the growth of rice following ryegrass and rye was promoted.The panicles and yield of rice following rye and ryegrass were significantly higher than that following wheat.However,there were no significant differences on grains per panicle,grain weight and quality of rice.Therefore growing forages in the winter season could result in a soil improving effect,while providing a high yield of green forage,and will promote the combination with crop production and animal production,start a new ecological agricultural system which joins elements of soil,crop,forages and livestock together.
