Abstract:Effective decomplexation of stable Cu-organics is great important for further Cu recovery in wastewater. However, the presence co-existing free organics with stable Cu-organic complexes in these effluents poses a significant challenge for radical based technologies. Herein, we developed an innovative three-dimensional electrochemical reactor (3DER) employing a three-dimensional network of ordered mesoporous carbon (3D-OMC) as the particle electrode to trigger ligand-to-metal charge transfer (LMCT), enabling the simultaneous decomplexation of Cu-organics and efficient recovery of Cu. Employing Cu-EDTA as a model pollutant, the 3DER achieved impressive decomplexation and Cu recovery efficiencies of 97 % and 98 %, respectively. The incorporation of 3D-OMC substantially enhanced the kinetic constants of Cu-EDTA decomplexation and Cu recovery, surpassing a conventional two-dimensional electrochemical reactor by 4.12-fold and 4.67-fold, respectively. This superior performance was ascribed to Cu(III)-mediated LMCT, facilitating the selective oxidation of Cu-organics at the positive pole and the deposition of decomplexed Cu(II) at the negative pole of the 3D-OMC. The open hierarchical macro-mesopore structure of 3D-OMC further amplifies its efficacy by affording increased access to active sites within the internal pores and fostering efficient mass transfer between the poles. Our results underscore the LMCT based 3DER’s capability to achieve cost-effective Cu recovery with remarkable stability in wastewater treatment, highlighting its significant potential for practical implementation.
