Abstract:Polarization beam splitting (BS) has been implemented on gradient metasurface with local response for entanglement manipulation and state reconstruction. To realize more degrees of light modulation, nonlocal modes, manifested as wavelength and momentum selectivity, should be applied into metasurface BS. Here, we demonstrate that single nonlocal phase gradient metasurface(NPGM) can function as a series of independent near-symmetric multiport BS,constructed by its momentum-polarization mode subspaces.Then, using any of above BS with simultaneous multiphoton interference, high-photon NOON states are prepared with high success probability and fidelity. For example,four-mode four-photon NOON state is obtained with 34.8% success probability and fidelity of 99.9%, greatly higher than those previously reported.With unique capability of multiphoton interference, this multiport BS on single NPGM can be directly used in the on-chip quantum photonics. Also, the efficient generation of high-photon NOON states with above BS has potential applications in quantum precision measurement.

Abstract:Metasurfaces have been widely investigated for their capabilities of manipulating wavefront versatilely and miniaturizing traditional optical elements into ultrathin devices. In this study, a nanoscale tunable beam splitter utilizing a bilayer of geometric metasurfaces in the visible spectrum is proposed and numerically examined. Inspired by the diffractive Alvarez lens and multilayer geometric metasurfaces, opposite quadratic phase distributions are imparted on both layers, and a varying linear phase gradient will arise through relatively lateral displacement between two layers, generating tunable angles of deflection. In addition, such geometric metasurfaces offer opposite directions of phase gradients for orthogonal circularly polarized incidences, leading to effective polarization beam splitting. Results prove that the splitting angles can be tuned precisely, and the energy split ratio can be effectively changed according to the ellipticity of the polarized incidence. This design could find significant applications in optical communication, measurement, display, and so on.

Abstract:Controlling light with a thin flat device is highly desirable in modern optics. A particular prospect in this area is a metasurface that independently shows distinct functionalities for different kinds of incoming waves. However, to date this is mostly achieved on anisotropic metasurfaces based on different propagation phases under two orthogonal linear polarizations. On the other hand, achieving multifunctionality for the two circularly polarized (CP) waves is very important in view of the growing significance of spin photonics. However, achieving completely decoupled optical functions for different photon spins is very challenging and remains elusive. Available attempts were only confined to locked spin-flipped phase profile to achieve opposite vortex modes, converged/diverged focusing, and interchanged holographic images. Here, we propose a general strategy to break this limitation by involving hybrid geometric and propagation phases with extremely low polarization cross-talk (an order of magnitude suppression). We experimentally demonstrate our scheme with two versatile CP bifunctional devices operating at microwaves. Besides, the possible applications have been illustrated from the perspective of stealth and information entropy by imposing dual irregular phase patterns in two completely decoupled helicity channels. The finding in this study is expected to trigger great interest in electromagnetic/optical integration and complex electromagnetic wave manipulations with a new degree of freedom.

Abstract:The wavefront control of spin or orbital angular momentum (OAM) is widely applied in the optical and radio fields. However, most passive metasurfaces provide limited manipulations, such as the spin-locked wavefront, a static OAM combination, or an uncontrollable OAM energy distribution. We propose a reflection-type multi-feed metasurface to independently generate multi-mode OAM beams with dynamically switchable OAM combinations and spin states, while simultaneously, the energy distribution of carrying OAM modes is controllable. Specifically, four elements are proposed to overcome the spin-locked phase limitation by combining propagation and geometric phases. The robustness of these elements is analyzed. By involving the amplitude term and multi-feed technology in the design process, the proposed metasurface can generate OAM beams with a controllable energy distribution over modes and switchable mode combinations. OAM-based radio communication with four independent channels is experimentally demonstrated at 14 GHz by employing a pair of the proposed metasurfaces. The powers of different channels are adjustable by the provided amplitude term, and the maximum crosstalk is −9 dB, proving the effectiveness and practicability of the proposed method.

Abstract:<p>Beam splitters are key photonic devices with wide applications in optical communication, interferometers, and spectroscopy. With the increasing demand for miniaturized and lightweight optical system, designing compact beam splitters becomes very important. However, current beam splitters based on cubes or plates are generally bulky and not suitable for integration. Here, a type of broadband multi-channel miniature beam splitters based on gradient metasurfaces in the visible wavelength is proposed and numerically demonstrated. The metasurface is composed of low loss TiO<sub>2</sub> nanocylinder and phase gradients in multiple directions are introduced to realize multi-channel beam splitting of the incident beam. Different metasurfaces with three, four, and five splitting channels are designed and numerically demonstrated. Moreover, a wide working band from 500 nm to 600 nm of beam splitter with high splitting efficiency is demonstrated, which agrees with the generalized Snell's law. The proposed multi-channel beam splitters may have potential applications in miniaturization of optical systems such as interferometers and spectroscopy.</p>

Abstract:Gradient metasurfaces are extensively utilized for polarized beam splitting (BS) in classical and quantum optics. Specifically, their phase gradient allows the path and polarization of multiple output lights to be locked by corresponding inputs. However, the full potential of this unique path-polarization-locked property in multi-beam splitting has not been investigated. Here, we demonstrate that a single metasurface can function as sequentially linked beam splitters, enabling the parallelization of a series of BS processes, which provides a multi-beam interference capability. In the classical region, we demonstrate that parallel BS allows continuous modulation of output light intensity and polarization state through input polarization adjustment. While in the quantum realm, parallel BS introduces an additional path-polarization correlation into Hong-Ou-Mandel interference for orthogonal circularly polarized photons. The principle of parallel BS through the metasurface presents a versatile approach to manipulate light at the micro-scale, which will have potential applications in optical computing and on-chip quantum information processing.

Abstract:An on‐chip beam splitting method, which combines the phase profiles optimized by the Dammann method with lens factor to achieve the function, based on a 1D metasurface, termed as metaline, is proposed and experimentally demonstrated. Such device has great potential in wide applications such as signal processing, on‐chip laser modulation, and on‐chip neural network. Wave shaping plays an important role in on‐chip signal processing. However, previously reported photonics elements exhibit limited control capabilities or require complex nanofabrication techniques. Here, an on‐chip metadevice is proposed for multiport beam splitting based on a 1D slots array on the silicon‐on‐insulator platform, which has the advantages of high efficiency, full 2π phase shift, and an easy design scheme. The proposed metadevice is experimentally demonstrated at 1550 nm, which shows different numbers of beam splits. This design provides a new solution for on‐chip beam splitting, which has great potential in wide applications such as signal processing, on‐chip laser modulation, on‐chip neural network, etc.

A Parallel Beam Splitting Based on Gradient Metasurface: Preparation and Fusion of Quantum Entanglement

Abstract:Gradient metasurface, formed by a set of subwavelength unit cells with different phase modulation, is widely used in polarized beam splitting (BS) in the classical and quantum optics. Specifically, its phase gradient allows the path and polarization of multiple output lights to be locked by corresponding inputs.Using this unique path-polarization locked property, we demonstrate that the single metasurface can function as sequentially linked beamsplitters, enabling the parallelization of a series of BS processes. Such a parallel BS metasurface provides a multi-beam interference capability for both classical and quantum light manipulation. Taking this advantage, we first prepare path and polarization hybrid entangled states of two, three, and multi photons from unentangled photon sources. Then, the ability of parallel BS-facilitated entanglement is applied to demonstrate entanglement fusion among entangled photon pairs, which can greatly enlarge the entanglement dimension. The principle of parallel BS through the metasurface opens up a versatile way to manipulate the quantum state at the micro/nano scale, which will have potential applications in on-chip quantum optics and quantum information processing.

Abstract:Beam splitters are essential components in various optical and photonic applications, for example, interferometers, multiplexers, and so on. Present beam splitters based on cubes or plates are normally bulky. Realizing beam splitters in nanoscales is useful to reduce the total size of photonic devices. We demonstrate here a beam splitter with nanoscale thickness based on a gradient metasurface comprising lithium niobate cylinder arrays. Since one unit cell of metasurface comprising two cylinder rows shows two opposite phase gradients, the incident light is split into different directions according to the generalized Snell's law. The split ratio is proven to be effectively tunable.

Abstract:Separating lights into different paths according to the polarization states while keeping their respective path’s polarizations with high purification is keen for polarization multiplex in optical communications. Metallic nanowire gratings with multi-slits in a period are proposed to achieve polarized beam splitters(PBSs) in reflection and diffraction. The setting of multi-slits largely reduces the reflection of photons with a transverse magnetific field via the plasmonic waveguiding effect, which leads to highly polarized output lights with extinction ratio larger than 20 dB in each channel. The proposed reflection/diffraction PBSs enrich the approaches to control the polarization states with the advantages of wide incident angles and flexible beam splitting angles.

Abstract:A scheme for generating the two-mode maximally path-entangled state of multi-photon, i.e., the so-called NOON state, through use of cavity QED techniques is proposed. In the present scheme, the entanglement between two spatial modes is established by guiding a laser pulse through a single atom cavity firstly, and then is transferred to the entanglement of the fields of the two cavities. The multi-photon state is generated in either one of the cavities via the strong atom-light interaction stimulated by the laser pulse adiabatically. Consequently, the desired optical NOON state is obtained.

Abstract:Abstract Monochromatic light can be characterized by its three fundamental properties: amplitude, phase, and polarization. In this work, we propose a versatile, transmission-mode all-dielectric metasurface platform that can independently manipulate the phase and amplitude for two orthogonal states of polarization in the visible frequency range. For proof-of-concept experimental demonstration, various single-layer metasurfaces composed of subwavelength-spaced titanium-dioxide nanopillars are designed, fabricated, and characterized to exhibit the ability of polarization-switchable multidimensional light-field manipulation, including polarization-switchable grayscale nanoprinting, nonuniform cylindrical lensing, and complex-amplitude holography. We envision the metasurface platform demonstrated here to open new possibilities toward creating compact multifunctional optical devices for applications in polarization optics, information encoding, optical data storage, and security.

Abstract:Photonic devices rarely provide both elaborate spatial control and sharp spectral control over an incoming wavefront. In optical metasurfaces, for example, the localized modes of individual meta-units govern the wavefront shape over a broad bandwidth, while nonlocal lattice modes extended over many unit cells support high quality-factor resonances. Here, we experimentally demonstrate nonlocal dielectric metasurfaces in the near-infrared that offer both spatial and spectral control of light, realizing metalenses focusing light exclusively over a narrowband resonance while leaving off-resonant frequencies unaffected. Our devices attain this functionality by supporting a quasi-bound state in the continuum encoded with a spatially varying geometric phase. We leverage this capability to experimentally realize a versatile platform for multispectral wavefront shaping where a stack of metasurfaces, each supporting multiple independently controlled quasi-bound states in the continuum, molds the optical wavefront distinctively at multiple wavelengths and yet stay transparent over the rest of the spectrum. Such a platform is scalable to the visible for applications in augmented reality and transparent displays.

Abstract:Polarization is one of the most important properties of light, which is also a typical dimension for light field manipulation. With specially designed meta-atoms and tailorable phase distribution, metasurfaces have been employed to achieve arbitrary polarization state in linear regime. Moreover, metasurface is also a platform for various nonlinear light generation, which can be used to realize an integrated polarized light source combined with its powerful capability of polarization manipulation. Here, we demonstrate a nonlinear plasmonic metasurface that is able to simultaneously realize nonlinear light generation and polarization manipulation. Split-ring resonators (SRRs) and complementary split-ring resonators (CSRRs) rotated by 90 degrees are selected to generate orthogonal polarizations of second harmonic (SH) components under the same linear polarized fundamental wave (FW), respectively. Phase difference and amplitude ratio between SH components can be tailored by adjusting the arm length of SRRs and CSRRs. By introducing spatial offset between adjacent basic supercells, we can achieve phase difference between two orthogonal components and thus realize polarization control of output SH emission and beam splitting at the same time. Two separated SH beams with orthogonal circular polarizations are achieved from a linearly polarized FW, and illuminated by circularly polarized FW, the same nonlinear plasmonic metasurface can generate linearly polarized SH, which can be viewed as a SH quarter-wave plate. Furthermore, arbitrary elliptical polarized SH can also be obtained from properly designed nonlinear metasurfaces. Our design provides a new approach for miniaturized light source for special polarization requirement, which may have potential applications in integrated optics.

Abstract:The generation of photons with spin and orbital angular momentum is of great importance in the fields of classical and quantum optical communications. Recent studies show that optical vortices with on-demand angular momentum can be realized with geometric phase-controlled metasurfaces. However, such optical vortices have two spin-locked orbital angular momentum states, which are difficult to distinguish in the same propagating direction. While the beam steering of the optical vortices can be easily realized in the linear optical regime, it remains elusive in the nonlinear optical counterpart. Here, we propose to generate and spatially separate the spin-locked second-harmonic vortex beams through phase gradient plasmonic metasurfaces. Based on the concept of the nonlinear geometric phase, the fork-type phase distributions are encoded onto the metasurfaces by using gold meta-atoms with a threefold rotational symmetry. Under the pumping of fundamental waves in the near-infrared regime, the spin-locked optical vortices at second-harmonic frequency are generated and then projected to different diffraction orders. The proposed strategy may have important applications in high-dimensional optical information processing.

Amplification of polarization NOON states

Abstract:NOON states are path entangled states which can be exploited to enhance phase resolution in interferometric measurements. In the present paper we analyze the quantum states obtained by optical parametric amplification of polarization NOON states. First we study, theoretically and experimentally, the amplification of a 2-photon state by a collinear Quantum Injected Optical Parametric Amplifier (QIOPA). We compared the stimulated emission regime with the spontaneous one, studied by Sciarrino et al. (PRA 77, 012324), finding comparable visibilities between the two cases but an enhancement of the signal in the stimulated case. As a second step, we show that the collinear amplifier cannot be successfully used for amplifying N-photon states with N>2 due to the intrinsic \lambda/4 oscillation pattern of the crystal. To overcome this limitation, we propose to adopt a scheme for the amplification of a generic state based on a non-collinear QIOPA and we show that the state obtained by the amplification process preserves \lambda/N feature and exhibits a high resilience to losses. Furthermore, an asymptotic unity visibility can be obtained when correlation functions with sufficiently high order M are analyzed.
