Abstract:Due to their low viscosity, high mobility, and high element contents, supercritical fluids are important agents in the cycling of elements. However, the chemical composition of supercritical fluids in natural rocks is poorly understood. Here, we investigate well-preserved primary multiphase fluid inclusions (MFIs) from an ultrahigh-pressure (UHP) metamorphic vein of the Bixiling eclogite in Dabieshan, China, thus providing direct evidence for the components of supercritical fluid occurring in a natural system. Via the 3D modeling of MFIs by Raman scanning, we quantitatively determined the major composition of the fluid trapped in the MFIs. Combined with the peak-metamorphic pressure-temperature conditions and the cooccurrence of coesite, rutile, and garnet, we suggest that the trapped fluids in the MFIs represent supercritical fluids in a deep subduction zone. The strong mobility of the supercritical fluids with respect to carbon and sulfur suggests that such fluids have profound effects on global carbon and sulfur cycling.

Abstract:Subduction zones regulate the global material cycle in which fluid activity plays a crucial role.In particular, supercritical fluids are important agents, because of their low viscosity, high mobility, and high element-carrying capability.However, direct observation for supercritical fluids in natural rocks is very limited, due to the immiscibility of supercritical fluid at lower temperature and pressure and fluid-rock interaction.Here, we report wellpreserved primary multiphase fluid inclusions (MFIs) in omphacite and garnet from a metamorphic vein in the ultrahigh-pressure (UHP) complex of the Bixiling eclogite in Dabieshan, China.MFIs coexisting with coesite contain a relatively constant mineral assemblage of quartz, calcite, sulfate minerals, silicate minerals, hematite and abundant H 2 O, representing an early vein-forming fluid, trapped under UHP conditions.Using 3D modeling analysis of MFIs by Raman scanning, for the first time we quantitatively calculated the composition of the fluid trapped in MFIs as: 21.5wt.%SiO 2 , 14.0wt.%CaO,6.3wt.%SO 3 , 5.3wt.%CO 2 , 3.4wt.%Al 2 O 3 , 3.4wt.%TFe 2 O 3 , 3.3wt.%MgO,0.7wt.%BaO,41.7wt.%H 2 O, with trace of Li, Na, K.Such a UHP fluid phase is compositionally between aqueous fluid and hydrous melt, which is consistent with experimentally derived supercritical fluid data.Combined with the peakmetamorphic P-T conditions obtained for the Bixiling eclogite and the occurrence of coesite, rutile and garnet in the veins, we conclude that the fluids in MFIs represent supercritical fluid.Significant amounts of calcite and anhydrite in MFIs demonstrate that supercritical fluid released from subducting slabs can effectively dissolve and transport carbon and sulfur to the mantle, and thus play an important role in the global deep carbon and sulfur cycle.[1]
Tracing the Oxidizing State and Element-Mobilizing Fluids in Continental Subduction Zones:Insights from the Granitic Melt-Eclogite Interface

Abstract:Fluids in subduction zones significantly influence element mobility, isotope fractionation, and mass transfer. However, unraveling the source, composition, and redox state of fluids in continental subduction zones poses a significant challenge. This study focuses on a granitic melt-eclogite contact interface, along with adjacent granite and eclogite from the Sulu ultrahigh-pressure metamorphic belt in East China. The interface exhibits complex mineral assemblages, enriched rare earth elements (REEs), and high field strength elements (HFSEs). Zircon grains from the interface show an age of similar to 217 +/- 9 Ma, slightly later than peak metamorphism, along with the presence of coesite inclusions. These findings suggest that the interfacial fluid likely formed from the mixing of granitic anatectic melt and aqueous fluid from the eclogite during the initial exhumation of the Sulu terrane. The interaction resulted in the eclogite acquiring substantial REEs and HFSEs, suggesting the interfacial fluid's effective element-transporting capability and potential supercritical fluid properties. Zircon Ce anomaly and Fe3+/Fe2+ oxybarometer data indicate a highly oxidizing interfacial fluid, analogous to arc magmas in oxygen fugacity. This led to the preferential loss of isotopically heavier Cr from the eclogite during fluid-eclogite interaction, evidenced by heavier Cr isotopic compositions in the interface (delta Cr-53 = -0.04 to -0.05 parts per thousand) compared to adjacent eclogite (delta Cr-53 as low as -0.11 parts per thousand). In summary, our results highlight the presence of strong oxidizing and element-mobilizing fluids in continental subduction zones, offering insights into supercritical fluid recognition and the genesis of oxidizing arc magmas in subduction zones.

Abstract:In order to better understand the role of fluids during subduction and subsequent exhumation, we have investigated whole-rock and mineral chemistry (major and trace elements) and Li, B as well as O, Sr, Nd, Pb isotopes on selected continuous drill-core profiles through contrasting lithological boundaries from the Chinese Continental Scientific Drilling Program (CCSD) in Sulu, China. Four carefully selected sample sets have been chosen to investigate geochemical changes as a result of fluid mobilization during dehydration, peak metamorphism, and exhumation of deeply subducted continental crust. Our data reveal that while O and Sr-Nd-Pb isotopic compositions remain more or less unchanged, significant Li and/or B isotope fractionations occur between different lithologies that are in close contact during various metamorphic stages. Samples that are supposed to represent prograde dehydration as indicated by veins formed at high pressures (HP) are characterized by element patterns of highly fluid-mobile elements in the veins that are complementary to those of the host eclogite. A second sample set represents a UHP metamorphic crustal eclogite that is separated from a garnet peridotite by a thin transitional interface. Garnet peridotite and eclogite are characterized by a >10% difference in MgO, which, together with the presence of abundant hydroxyl-bearing minerals and compositionally different clinopyroxene grains demonstrate that both rocks have been derived from different sources that have been tectonically juxtaposed during subduction, and that hydrous silicate-rich fluids have been added from the subducting slab to the mantle. Two additional sample sets, comprising retrograde amphibolite and relatively fresh eclogite, demonstrate that besides external fluids, internal fluids can be responsible for the formation of amphibolite. Li and B concentrations and isotopic compositions point to losses and isotopic fractionation during progressive dehydration. On the other hand, fluids with isotopically heavier Li and B are added during retrogression. On a small scale, mantle-derived rocks may be significantly metasomatized by fluids derived from the subducted slab. Our study indicates that during high-grade metamorphism, Li and B may show different patterns of enrichment and of isotopic fractionation.

Abstract:Late Mesozoic mafic rocks (including mafic dikes/lamprophyres, volcanic rocks and ultramafic to mafic intrusions) from the Dabie-Sulu region show arc-like trace element features (high LILE/HFSE and LREE/HFSE ratios) and have highly radiogenic Sr (1(Sr) = 0.7065 similar to 0.7090) and non-radiogenic Nd (epsilon(Nd) (t) = - 19 similar to -10) isotopic compositions. Most of the mafic rocks have superchondritic Nb/Ta and Zr/Hf ratios, probably as a consequence of relatively CO2- and rutile- rich melt metasomatism in response to the detachment/breakoff of the Yangtze subducted continental slab. The enriched Sr-Nd isotopic signatures in these mafic rocks suggest that the metasomatic melts were probably derived from the subducted continental crust as evidenced by the high-pressure to ultrahigh-pressure metamorphic assemblage in the orogen. The geochemical and isotopic features of the mafic rocks from the Dabie-Sulu region indicate that interaction between melts derived from the subducted continental slab and the overlying mantle is an important mechanism for LILE and LREE enrichment of the lithospheric mantle beneath the orogen.

Abstract:The coesite-bearing eclogites and associated ultramafic rocks of Bixiling form the largest metamorphic complex in the Dabie–Sulu ultrahigh-pressure (UHP) metamorphic belt. They mainly consist of “fresh” eclogite, kyanite-rich eclogite, retrograded eclogite and garnet peridotite. Fluid inclusion and oxygen isotope studies have been carried out on the different types of eclogite and peridotite in order to identify the role of fluids during the metamorphic evolution culminating in UHP metamorphism. Five types of fluid inclusions were distinguished based on textural criteria and fluid compositions: (1) primary Ca-rich brines in quartz blebs in kyanite; (2) primary NaCl-dominated high-salinity inclusions in omphacite and kyanite; (3) primary NaCl-dominated medium- to high-salinity inclusions in matrix quartz; (4) carbonic inclusions in omphacite and matrix quartz; (5) secondary low-salinity aqueous (or pure water) inclusions in matrix quartz. The Ca-rich fluid inclusions in quartz blebs in kyanite represent the earliest recognizable fluids (prograde metamorphism) as they largely escaped late re-equilibration. Fluid inclusions in omphacite and kyanite may have been trapped during peak metamorphic conditions, whereas low-salinity aqueous inclusions in matrix quartz were trapped during the latest stage of uplift. UV-laser oxygen isotope measurements show that garnet and clinopyroxene from the “fresh” eclogite, kyanite-rich eclogite and garnet peridotite have narrow δ18O values ranging from 3.0 to 3.9‰. In contrast, garnet and omphacite in retrograded eclogite have δ18O values of −1.8 to −1.2 and of −1.1 to −0.6‰, respectively. The difference in oxygen isotope composition is interpreted to result from partial oxygen isotope exchange between the UHP complex and retrograde fluids during late exhumation. Fluids derived from the surrounding gneiss were probably responsible for the low-salinity solutions found in secondary fluid inclusions and the lowering of the δ18O values of the retrograded eclogite.

Abstract:Recent discoveries of UHP eclogites from the northern Dabie Complex (NDC) in central China provide an opportunity to improve our understanding of the tectonic setting of the NDC and exhumation mechanism of UHPM rocks. The petrology, geochemistry, Sr–Nd–O isotopic compositions and Sm–Nd isotopic chronology of some eclogites from the NDC were obtained in this study. The major elemental compositions and relatively low ɛNd (T) of about −10 for the eclogites suggest that the protoliths of most eclogites were ancient basaltic rocks developed in continental crust, and thus these eclogites were produced by subduction of the Yangtze continental crust. However, some of the eclogites within foliated peridotites with relatively high ɛNd (T) values up to +2.4 are interpreted as pieces of lithospheric mantle scraped off the overlying mantle by subducting continental crust and then subducted together into mantle depths. Therefore, the metamorphosed mafic-ultramafic belt containing eclogite and meta-peridotite blocks along the southern part of the Mozitan–Xiaotian fault zone may represent the tectonic melange produced by the subduction of the Yangtze continental crust.

Abstract:Geochemical analyses of minerals and whole rocks for major and trace elements as well as Sr-Nd-O isotopes on samples along a profile across the boundary between amphibolite retrogressed from ultrahigh pressure (UHP) eclogite and its country rock granitic gneiss from the South Dabie low-T/UHP zone, China, are studied to assess the process that controls element mobility under extreme metamorphic conditions. Directly at the contact with the granitic gneiss, the amphibolite has higher concentrations of K, Al, LILEs, REEs, HFSEs, Th, and U, slightly lower concentrations of SiO2, MgO, and CaO, but very similar FeOt and transitional metal element contents relative to the other amphibolites further away from the boundary. Consistently, delta O-18 values of the amphibolite display a progressive increase towards the boundary, indicating fluid-assisted O-isotope exchange across the contacts of different lithologies at local scales. These can neither be attributed to amphibolite-facies retrogression of eclogite, which is known to have no significant effect on their major and trace elements, nor to Si-rich metasomatism from partially melted granitic gneiss, which should increase the silica content of the amphibolite at the contact. Therefore, neither of the two processes is viable here. We thus propose that the variations observed here were caused by metasomatism of supercritical liquids that were generated at pressure higher than that of the second critical endpoint in the granitic gneiss-H2O system. This interpretation is supported by multiphase solid inclusions of K-feldspar+quartz+ calcite+zircon +/- amphibole +/- clinozoisite +/- garnet +/- apatite within garnet in the amphibolite.
Hydrogen and Oxygen Isotope Geochemistry of High to Ultrahigh Pressure Metamorphic Rocks from Southeast Dabie.

Abstract:The hydrogen and oxygen isotope compositions of single minerals and whole-rock were measured for coesite-bearing eclogite at Shima and quartz-bearing eclogite at Huangzhen in southeastern Dabie. The δ18O values of the eclogites vary from 1.0 to 7.4‰ at Shima but from -2.1 to 1.3‰ at Huangzhen; the δD values of micas from the eclogites are -76 to -61‰ at Shima and -89 to -77‰ at Huangzhen. Hydrogen and oxygen isotope fractionations between the minerals are in both equilibrium and disequilibrium, indicating that the eclogites have not only inherited the 18O-depletion feature of their protoliths, but also experienced strong retrograde alteration during exhumation. Oxygen isotope temperatures of the eclogite mineral-pairs are cumulated at two peak values of 600 to 640℃ and 380 to 430℃, respectively, corresponding to retrograde reequilibration at greenschist-facie and high amphibolite-facies conditions; the peak eclogite-facies temperatures of 750 to 800℃ cannot be retrieved due to the strong retrograde alteration. The high and ultrahigh pressure rocks in southeastern Dabie are geologically separated by the quartz-bearing eclogite and granitic gneiss, but the oxygen isotope analyses indicate an in situ relationship between the two rocks.

Abstract:We have studied the fluid inclusions in coesite-bearing eclogites in the Dabie Shan terranes (Yang et al. 1999, 2000, 2001), and reported one extremely high H-2- bearing fluid inclusion (Yang et al. 2003), where the Triassic ultra-high pressure (UHP) metamorphism occurred at mantle depths (Okay et al. 1989; Wang et al. 1989, Xu et al. 1992; Li et al. 1993). This paper reports the result of rare gas geochemistry of the UHP eclogites.

Abstract:In addition to the Triassic Hong'an low-T–high-P eclogite and the Xinxian coesite-bearing kyanite-glaucophane eclogite, Silurian coesite-free amphibole eclogites occur in the Sujiahe region, NW Dabie Shan of central China. A comprehensive study of petrology, Nd–Sr, O–H isotopes and fluid inclusions has been carried out for the Sujiahe eclogites. Geothermobarometry of mineral assemblages gave peak P–T conditions of 600–730 °C and 14–19 kbar, and retrograde metamorphism of 530–685 °C and 6 kbar. The eclogites have high Nd(t) values of −1.9 to 5.8, indicating that their protoliths were derived from oceanic basalts. Whole-rock δ18O values for eclogites at Xiongdian and at Hujiawan range from 8.8‰ to 11.2‰, whereas δ18O value of the Yangchong eclogite is as low as 4.3‰. Whole-rock δD values range from −55‰ to −75‰. The results exclude that the eclogite protoliths were isotopically exchanged with ancient meteoric water prior to plate subduction, thus distinguishing them from the other Dabie–Sulu eclogites. Fluid inclusions show the presence of early highly saline brine and late low-salinity aqueous fluids in the Sujiahe eclogites during the high-P metamorphism. The isotopic data suggest that the Sujiahe eclogite protolith was metamorphosed during subduction of an oceanic plate beneath the Sino-Korean Craton in the Middle Paleozoic, different from the other eclogites in the Dabie–Sulu orogen which were formed by the ultrahigh pressure metamorphism during the Triassic.

Abstract:Heterogeneous δ18O values as low as - 2.6‰ to+7.0% are observed for ultrahigh pressure eclogites from the Dabie Mountains in East China. Oxygen isotope equilibrium has been approached between the eclogite minerals, suggesting that the rocks would have acquired the unusual δ18O values prior to ultrahigh pressure metamorphism by interaction with18O-depleted fluid. δD values of hydroxyl-bearing are between — 51% and - 83‰, precluding the possibility of paleoseawater involvement. The only likely fluid is ancient meteoric water that exchanged oxygen isotopes with the eclogite precursor (a kind of basaltic rocks) formerly resident on the continental crust. This suggests a crustal recycling process in the suture zone of late subduction. Because silicate minerals undergo rapid oxygen isotope exchange at mantle pressures, preservation of the isotopic signature of meteoric water in the eclogites indicates limited crust-mantle interaction and thus a short residence time (<20 Ma) when the plate containing the eclogite precursor was subducted to mantle depths. The agreement in oxygen isotope temperatures for different mineral pairs suggests a rapid cooling and ascent process for the eclogites subsequent to their formation at mantle depths.

Abstract:The oxygen isotope composition of single minerals from eclogite at Hong'an and granulite at Luotian in the Southwest Dabie Mountains of Hubei Province were measured, respectively. The results were discussed in view of the effect of oxygen diffusion on oxygen isotope equilibrium between minerals. The Gaoqiao eclogite at Hong'an has whole-rock 818O values of 6.4‰ to 7.3%, Huangtuling felsic granulite at Luotian has whole-rock 818O values of 7.6% to 7.8%, and Huilanshan mafic granulite at Luotian has whole-rock δ18O values of 3.9%. Oxygen isotope equilibrium fractionations have been preserved between the minerals at peak metamorphic conditions, yielding oxygen isotope temperatures of 425℃ to 620℃ for the eclogite and 740℃ to 945℃ for the granulites. The fast boundary diffusion model was applied to the minerals and corresponding oxygen isotope temperatures were calculated, which are not only in agreement with most of the oxygen isotope temperatures measured for the mineral-pairs, but also concordant with petrological temperatures. Therefore, both eclogite and granulite in Southwest Dabie Mountains experienced a fast cooling process like the eclogites in East Dabie Mountains subsequent to their formation, and there was no the significant introduction of exotic fluid to the high-pressure rocks in the process of retrograde metamorphism.
Oxygen Isotope Constraints on Fluid Flow During Eclogitization in the Sulu Terrane

Abstract:The oxygen isotope study has been carried out for quartz-veins within eclogite and associated gneiss from the Donghai district in the western part of the Sulu terrane, eastern China. Oxygen isotope equilibrium has been achieved between quartz and other minerals, yielding the isotope temperatures of 660-840 degrees C for quartz veins, 595-725 degrees C for eclogites, and 505-665 degrees C for gneiss. delta(18)O values of vein-quartz vary from -5.3 parts per thousand to +7.5 parts per thousand, but resemble delta(18)O values of host eclogites, indicating a close approach of isotopic equilibrium between metamorphic fluids and the host rocks. An interally buffered fluid flow is implicated during ultrahigh-pressure metamorphism and subsequent retrogression. The fluid would be produced by dehydration of hydrothermally altered eclogite precursors and thus its delta(18)O values were governed by the nature of host eclogites. These provide evidence for the fracture flow of metamorphic fluid during eclogitization.

Abstract:The petrologic geochemical and Sr−Nd isotopic compositions of the eclogites from the mafic-ultramafic rock belt (MUMRB) in the Northern Dabie Mountains indicate that: (1) the protoliths of most of eclogites are tholeitic basalt and a few may be gabbro, and most of them produced from the Yangtze subducted continental crust (lower crust and formed during the deep subduction) and a part may be from paleo-oceanic relics between the Yangtze and North China continental plates; (2) their positive Nb anomalies and related trace element characteristics show that they did not form in the island-arc setting; (3) the metamorphosed MUMRB with eclogite and meta-peridotite blocks along the southern part of the Mozitan-Xiaotian fault zone may represent the suture zone produced during the collision between the Yangtze and North China continental plates, which included the Yangtze subducted continental crust and paleo-oceanic relics.
Oxygen and Carbon Isotope Anomalies in the Ultrahigh Pressure Metamorphic Rocks of the Dabie-Sulu Terranes: Implications for Geodynamics

Abstract:Unusual isotope compositions of oxygen and carbon have been found in the ultrahigh pressure (UHP) metamorphic rocks of rite Dabie-Sulu terranes, East China. Eclogites and coexisting coesite-bearing gneiss show negative delta O-18 values as low as -10 to -2 parts per thousand relative to SMOW, while coesite-bearing marble associated with the eclogites has high delta C-13 values lip to +6 parts per thousand relative to PDB. The negative delta(18)O values in the UHP rocks must be acquired by water-rock interaction between the precursors of the rocks and meteoric water prior to eclogite facies metamorphism, because oxygen isotope Equilibrium has been presented between different mineral pairs from the rocks which precludes hydrothermal alteration during exhumation. The positive delta C-13 values in the UHP marble are interpreted to present the carbon isotope composition of premetamorphic limestone, because there is no known process to enrich carbonate in delta C-13 during regional metamorphism, The carbon isotope anomaly in the protolith of the marble suggests it local change irt the redox state of water during deposition of limestone. Therefore, the Dabie area was a continental marginal basin that became consuming due to convergence prior to collision between the Yangtze and Sino-Korean plates. Survival of the unusually negative delta O-18 and positive delta C-13 values in the UHP rocks suggests that there was no significant isotopic exchange with the mantle during the subduction of supracrustal rocks to mantle depths. Because eclogitic and gneissic minerals undergo rapid oxygen isotope exchange by diffusion and recrystallization at mantle pressures and temperatures. preservation of meteoric ater signature in the rocks implies a short residence time and a fluid-absent environment for the UHP slab at mantle depths. The consistency of oxygen isotope geothermometries for different mineral pairs suggests a rapid cooling and ascent process for the UHP eclogites subsequent to their formation at mantle depths and a lack of fluid during exhumation.

Abstract:Water in nominally anhydrous minerals may exist as structural hydroxyl and molecular H2O, and their inter-transformation can occur during subduction zone metamorphism. This issue is examined here by a systematic study on water in garnet and omphacite for ultrahigh-pressure metamorphic eclogites from the Dabie orogen. IR spectra of garnet at different preheating temperatures imply that the broad absorption band at 3400-3450 cm-1 mainly represents molecular H2O. Molecular H2O in garnet can be intrinsic origin, but is mainly originated from external fluid during exhumation. The positive correlation between molecular H2O and structural hydroxyl in garnet suggests their inter-transformation. Molecular H2O that was formerly included in garnet or derived from decomposition of hydrous minerals was transformed gradually to structural hydroxyl in garnet during subduc-tion. OH- modes at higher wavenumber in garnet are more stable and more enriched in D, and D-poor molecular H2O is preferentially lost during dehydration. Hydroxyl in both anhydrous and hydrous minerals would be transformed to molecular H2O during exhumation and redistributed into garnet or retrograde minerals. The addition of molecular H2O into garnet during exhumation causes increase of structural hydroxyl but decrease of delta D value, and affects accurate estimate of water content in peak garnet. Different from the large variation of garnet water contents, omphacite tends to be water-saturated at high-pressure conditions and its water content is mainly controlled by Ca-Eskola. The subducting mafic crust can transport a considerable amount of water to subarc depths to result in the formation of relatively water-rich mantle regions.

Abstract:Major and trace elements, Sr-Nd isotope and oxygen isotopes of whole-rock and mineral separates were determined for post-collisional intermediate-felsic rocks at Tianzhushan in the Dabie Mountains. The results show that these Early Cretaceous intrusive rocks are characterized by strong LREE enrichment, negative HFSE anomalies (Nb, Ta and Ti) but positive Pb anomalies. Their (87Sr/86Sr)i ratios vary from 0.7062 to 0.7083 and εNd(t) values from - 17. 1 to - 19.7. There is a large variation in mineral δ18O values, with quartz from 7. 48 to 9. 16‰, K-feldspar 3. 76 to 7. 80‰, plagioclase 2. 06 to 6. 96‰, and zircon 4. 16 to 5. 83‰. Most of the zircons have δ18O values similar to the normal mantle zircon δ18O values of 5. 3±0. 3‰. Oxygen isotope equilibrium fractionations between quartz and zircon are preserved for most of the samples; the other minerals such as K-feldspar, plagioclase, biotite and amphibole show obvious disequilibria when paired with zircon, indicating alteration by post-magmatic subsolidus water-rock interaction. The element and isotope results suggest that the post-collisional intermediate rocks were generated by amphibole-dehydration melting of mafic rocks in the thickened lower crust, coupled with fractional crystallization during magma emplacement; the felsic rocks were derived from partial melting of middle crust which is similar in chemical compositions to TTG orthogneisses in North Dabie.
