Abstract:Cement blended with aluminate and carbonate phases has demonstrated potential as a low-carbon binding material, with limestone calcined clay cement (LC3) being a prime example. Given the growing demand for building materials, it is essential to explore alternative raw materials. This study investigates the chloride resistance of cement incorporating aluminate phases from calcined kaolin tailings (CKT) and the carbonate phase from limestone/calcium carbonate whiskers (LS/CW). The rapid chloride migration test is employed to analyze the impact of CKT and its combination with CW on chloride movement. Additionally, microstructural characteristics, phase assemblage, and morphology of the hardened paste are examined using Mercury Intrusion Porosimetry (MIP), electrochemical tests, X-ray Diffraction (XRD), and Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM). Results indicate that CKT and CW combined exhibit superior chloride resistance. Beyond the filler effect, the pozzolanic and aluminate-carbonate reactions effect, the bridging effect of CW enhances microstructural properties. This study highlights the potential of modifying raw material shapes to improve long-term performance of blended cementitious materials.
