Abstract:In recent years, interest in the development of multigeneration processes has increased due to the rising demand for cleaner energy production and efforts to transition towards a circular economy. The present work proposes and assesses an innovative green hydrogen and formic acid multigeneration system through the integration of coal and biomass-fueled gasification, chemical looping combustion, natural gas reforming, and electrochemical CO2 reduction. The process provides a novel way to capture CO2 and convert it into formic acid inherently and is simulated using the Aspen Plus software. The 3E (energy, exergy, and economic) analysis models are built to evaluate the thermodynamic performance and the economic feasibility of the presented system. In addition, the impact of various parameters is analyzed through a sensitivity analysis. The results show that the energy efficiency attained by the system is 67.98%, while the exergy efficiency is 62.69%. The system generates 672.13 kg of H2 and 3916.26 kg of HCOOH per hour. The process's in-out exergy efficiency is 74.89%, indicating an efficient energy conversion system. The economic analysis results show LCOH and LCOFA values of 2.37 $/kg and 0.407 $/kg, respectively, and are extremely sensitive to the market price variation of the electrolyzer. The outcomes of this study provide strategies to improve resource utilization and enhance feed flexibility in integrated processes.
