Abstract:AB2-type Ti-Mn based alloys are pivotal in hydrogen storage alloys due to their economic efficiency and substantial storage capacity. However, these alloys encounter challenges such as poor hysteresis, steep plateau curves, and scalability issues. To overcome these, we design Cr-doped Ti-Mn-based hydrogen storage alloys and systematically explore the influence of Cr doping on the microstructure and hydrogen storage properties of Ti0.9Zr0.1V0.45CrxMn1.5-x (x = 0, 0.05, 0.10, 0.15, 0.20), denoted as Cr-0, Cr-0.05, Cr-0.10, Cr-0.15, and Cr-0.20. We found that these alloys predominantly exhibit a C14 Laves phase structure, with a secondary Ti4Mn2O phase present in Cr-0 and Cr-0.20. Notably, Cr incorporation markedly reduced the incubation period compared to Crfree counterparts. The PCT curves reveal hydrogen absorption capacities of 2.18 wt% (Cr-0), 2.08 wt% (Cr-0.05), 2.13 wt% (Cr-0.10), 2.16 wt% (Cr-0.15), and 2.21 wt% (Cr-0.20), surpassing similar alloys. Cr addition also enhanced hysteresis characteristics, despite an increase in plateau slope. Remarkably, the Cr-0.2 alloy shows robust cyclic stability with minimal decline in capacity after 200 cycles (2.10-2.00 wt% H2). This study addresses activation challenges, decreases plateau hysteresis, and extends the cycle life of Ti-Mn-based AB2 alloys, offering profound insights for practical hydrogen storage applications.
