Abstract:The paper develops a finite element method for the Navier-Stokes equations of incompressible viscous fluid in a time-dependent domain. The method builds on a quasi-Lagrangian formulation of the problem. The paper provides stability and convergence analysis of the fully discrete (finite-difference in time and finite-element in space) method. The analysis does not assume any CFL time-step restriction, it rather needs mild conditions of the form $\Delta t\le C$, where $C$ depends only on problem data, and $h^{2m_u+2}\le c\,\Delta t$, $m_u$ is polynomial degree of velocity finite element space. Both conditions result from a numerical treatment of practically important non-homogeneous boundary conditions. The theoretically predicted convergence rate is confirmed by a set of numerical experiments. Further we apply the method to simulate a flow in a simplified model of the left ventricle of a human heart, where the ventricle wall dynamics is reconstructed from a sequence of contrast enhanced Computed Tomography images.

Abstract:The paper addresses the challenge of constructing conforming finite element spaces for the curl div operator in three dimensions. Tangential-normal continuity is introduced in order to develop distributional finite element curl div complexes. The spaces constructed are applied to discretize the quad curl problem, demonstrating optimal order of convergence. Furthermore, a hybridization technique is proposed, demonstrating its equivalence to nonconforming finite elements and weak Galerkin methods.

Abstract:This article presents a new primal-dual weak Galerkin finite element method for the div-curl system with tangential boundary conditions and low-regularity assumptions on the solution. The numerical scheme is based on a weak variational form involving no partial derivatives of the exact solution supplemented by a dual or ajoint problem in the general context of the weak Galerkin finite element method. Optimal order error estimates in $L^2$ are established for solution vector fields in $H^\theta(\Omega),\ \theta>\frac12$. The mathematical theory was derived on connected domains with general topological properties (namely, arbitrary first and second Betti numbers). Numerical results are reported to confirm the theoretical convergence.

Abstract:We construct smooth finite element de Rham complexes in two space dimensions. This leads to three families of curl-curl conforming finite elements, two of which contain two existing families. The simplest triangular and rectangular finite elements have only 6 and 8 degrees of freedom, respectively. Numerical experiments for each family demonstrate the convergence and efficiency of the elements for solving the quad-curl problem.

Abstract:This paper is devoted to the construction and analysis of the finite element approximations for the H(D) convection-diffusion problems, where D can be chosen as grad, curl or div in 3D case. An essential feature of these constructions is to properly average the PDE coefficients on the sub-simplexes. The schemes are of the class of exponential fitting methods that result in special upwind schemes when the diffusion coefficient approaches to zero. Their well-posedness are established for sufficiently small mesh size assuming that the convection-diffusion problems are uniquely solvable. Convergence of first order is derived under minimal smoothness of the solution. Some numerical examples are given to demonstrate the robustness and effectiveness for general convection-diffusion problems.
Conforming finite element DIVDIV complexes and the application for the linearized Einstein-Bianchi system

Abstract:This paper presents the first family of conforming finite element divdiv complexes on tetrahedral grids in three dimensions. In these complexes, finite element spaces of $H(\text{divdiv},\Omega;\mathbb{S})$ are from a current preprint [Chen and Huang, arXiv: <a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="2007.12399" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/2007.12399">2007.12399</a>, 2020] while finite element spaces of both $H(\text{symcurl},\Omega;\mathbb{T})$ and $H^1(\Omega;\mathbb{R}^3)$ are newly constructed here. It is proved that these finite element complexes are exact. As a result, they can be used to discretize the linearized Einstein-Bianchi system within the dual formulation.

Abstract:In this paper, amiable mixed schemes are presented for two variants of fourth order curl equations. Specifically, mixed formulations for the problems are constructed, which are well-posed in Babuska-Brezzi's sense and admit stable discretizations by finite element spaces of low smoothness and of low degree. The regularities of the mixed formulations and thus equivalently the primal problems are established, and some finite elements examples are given which can exploit the regularity of the solutions to an optimal extent.

Abstract:In this paper, we review some recent progress made in [4, 5, 6] on finite difference schemes for viscous incompressible flows using vorticity formulation. The main purpose of this series of papers [4, 5, 6] is to resurrect the idea of using local vorticity boundary condition for unsteady calculation. The emphasis is on simplicity of the methods. Three main issues will be discussed: efficient time-stepping procedures and cell Reynolds number constraints, efficient methods in 3D on non-staggered grids and efficient high order methods using compact differencing.
An exactly curl-free finite-volume scheme for a hyperbolic compressible barotropic two-phase model

Abstract:We present a new second order accurate structure-preserving finite volume scheme for the solution of the compressible barotropic two-phase model of Romenski et. al in multiple space dimensions. The governing equations fall into the wider class of symmetric hyperbolic and thermodynamically compatible (SHTC) systems and consist of a set of first-order hyperbolic partial differential equations (PDE). In the absence of algebraic source terms, the model is subject to a curl-free constraint for the relative velocity between the two phases. The main objective of this paper is, therefore, to preserve this structural property exactly also at the discrete level. The new numerical method is based on a staggered grid arrangement where the relative velocity field is stored in the cell vertexes while all the remaining variables are stored in the cell centers. This allows the definition of discretely compatible gradient and curl operators, which ensure that the discrete curl errors of the relative velocity field remain zero up to machine precision. A set of numerical results confirms this property also experimentally.

Abstract:A new $H(\textrm{divdiv})$-conforming finite element is presented, which avoids the need for super-smoothness by redistributing the degrees of freedom to edges and faces. This leads to a hybridizable mixed method with superconvergence for the biharmonic equation. Moreover, new finite element divdiv complexes are established. Finally, new weak Galerkin and $C^0$ discontinuous Galerkin methods for the biharmonic equation are derived.

Abstract:We propose two families of nonconforming elements on cubical meshes: one for the $-\text{curl}\Delta\text{curl}$ problem and the other for the Brinkman problem. The element for the $-\text{curl}\Delta\text{curl}$ problem is the first nonconforming element on cubical meshes. The element for the Brinkman problem can yield a uniformly stable finite element method with respect to the parameter $\nu$. The lowest-order elements for the $-\text{curl}\Delta\text{curl}$ and the Brinkman problems have 48 and 30 degrees of freedom, respectively. The two families of elements are subspaces of $H(\text{curl};\Omega)$ and $H(\text{div};\Omega)$, and they, as nonconforming approximation to $H(\text{gradcurl};\Omega)$ and $[H^1(\Omega)]^3$, can form a discrete Stokes complex together with the Lagrange element and the $L^2$ element.

Abstract:Based on a recent novel formulation of parametric anisotropic curve shortening flow, we analyse a fully discrete numerical method of this geometric evolution equation. The method uses piecewise linear finite elements in space and a backward Euler approximation in time. We establish existence and uniqueness of a discrete solution, as well as an unconditional stability property. Some numerical computations confirm the theoretical results and demonstrate the practicality of our method.

Abstract:In this paper, we first construct the $H^2$(curl)-conforming finite elements both on a rectangle and a triangle. They possess some fascinating properties which have been proven by a rigorous theoretical analysis. Then we apply the elements to construct a finite element space for discretizing quad-curl problems. Convergence orders $O(h^k)$ in the $H$(curl) norm and $O(h^{k-1})$ in the $H^2$(curl) norm are established. Numerical experiments are provided to confirm our theoretical results.

A highly efficient and accurate divergence-free spectral method for curl-curl equation in two and three dimensions

Abstract:In this paper, we present a fast divergence-free spectral algorithm (FDSA) for the curl-curl problem. Divergence-free bases in two and three dimensions are constructed by using the generalized Jacobi polynomials. An accurate spectral method with exact preservation of the divergence-free constraint point-wisely is then proposed, and its corresponding error estimate is established. We then present a highly efficient solution algorithm based on a combination of matrix-free preconditioned Krylov subspace iterative method and a fully diagonalizable auxiliary problem, which is derived from the spectral discretisations of generalized eigenvalue problems of Laplace and biharmonic operators. We rigorously prove that the dimensions of the invariant subspace of the preconditioned linear system resulting from the divergence-free spectral method with respect to the dominate eigenvalue $1$, are $(N-3)^2$ and $2(N-3)^3$ for two- and three-dimensional problems with $(N-1)^2$ and $2(N-1)^3$ unknowns, respectively. Thus, the proposed method usually takes only several iterations to converge, and astonishingly, as the problem size (polynomial order) increases, the number of iterations will decrease, even for highly indefinite system and oscillatory solutions. As a result, the computational cost of the solution algorithm is only a small multiple of $N^3$ and $N^4$ floating number operations for 2D and 3D problems, respectively. Plenty of numerical examples for solving the curl-curl problem with both constant and variable coefficients in two and three dimensions are presented to demonstrate the accuracy and efficiency of the proposed method.

Abstract:This paper presents a novel approach to the construction of the lowest order $H(\mathrm{curl})$ and $H(\mathrm{div})$ exponentially-fitted finite element spaces ${\mathcal{S}_{1^-}^{k}}~(k=1,2)$ on 3D simplicial mesh for corresponding convection-diffusion problems. It is noteworthy that this method not only facilitates the construction of the functions themselves but also provides corresponding discrete fluxes simultaneously. Utilizing this approach, we successfully establish a discrete convection-diffusion complex and employ a specialized weighted interpolation to establish a bridge between the continuous complex and the discrete complex, resulting in a coherent framework. Furthermore, we demonstrate the commutativity of the framework when the convection field is locally constant, along with the exactness of the discrete convection-diffusion complex. Consequently, these types of spaces can be directly employed to devise the corresponding discrete scheme through a Petrov-Galerkin method.

Abstract:We propose a finite element discretization for the steady, generalized Navier-Stokes equations for fluids with shear-dependent viscosity, completed with inhomogeneous Dirichlet boundary conditions and an inhomogeneous divergence constraint. We establish (weak) convergence of discrete solutions as well as a priori error estimates for the velocity vector field and the scalar kinematic pressure. Numerical experiments complement the theoretical findings.

These spaces can be implemented as a combination of continuous and discontinuous Lagrange elements and fit in de~Rham complexes. We construct well-conditioned nodal bases.

This paper deals with the convergence of finite volume scheme (FVS) for solving coagulation and multiple fragmentation equations having locally bounded coagulation kernel but singularity near the origin due to fragmentation rates. Thanks to the Dunford–Pettis and De La Vall[math]e-Poussin theorems, we establish that numerical solution is converging to the weak solution of the continuous model using a weak [math] compactness argument. A suitable stable condition on time step is taken to achieve the result. Furthermore, when kernels are in [math] space, first-order error approximation is demonstrated for a uniform mesh. It is numerically validated by taking four test problems of coupled coagulation–fragmentation models.

An equilibrated estimator for mixed finite element discretizations of the curl-curl problem

Abstract:We propose a new a posteriori error estimator for mixed finite element discretizations of the curl-curl problem. This estimator relies on a Prager--Synge inequality, and therefore leads to fully guaranteed constant-free upper bounds on the error. The estimator is also locally efficient and polynomial-degree-robust. The construction is based on patch-wise divergence-constrained minimization problems, leading to a cheap embarrassingly parallel algorithm. Crucially, the estimator operates without any assumption on the topology of the domain, and unconventional arguments are required to establish the reliability estimate. Numerical examples illustrate the key theoretical results, and suggest that the estimator is suited for mesh adaptivity purposes.
