Abstract:In the paper we study div-curl problem in exterior domain with given condition on infinity and no-slip boundary condition. We will derive moment relations on vorticity and divergence for uniqueness solvability of the problem and present $L_2$-estimates for solutions.

Abstract:This article presents a new primal-dual weak Galerkin finite element method for the div-curl system with tangential boundary conditions and low-regularity assumptions on the solution. The numerical scheme is based on a weak variational form involving no partial derivatives of the exact solution supplemented by a dual or ajoint problem in the general context of the weak Galerkin finite element method. Optimal order error estimates in $L^2$ are established for solution vector fields in $H^\theta(\Omega),\ \theta>\frac12$. The mathematical theory was derived on connected domains with general topological properties (namely, arbitrary first and second Betti numbers). Numerical results are reported to confirm the theoretical convergence.

Abstract:We consider the flow of an { ideal} fluid in a 2D-bounded domain, admitting flows through the boundary of this domain. The flow is described by Euler equations with \textit{non-homogeneous } Navier slip boundary conditions. These conditions can be written in the form $\mathbf{v}\cdot \mathsf{n}=a,$ $2D(\mathbf{v})\mathsf{n}\cdot \mathsf{s}+\alpha \mathbf{v}% \cdot {\mathsf{s}}=b,$ where the tensor $D(\mathbf{v})$ is the rate-of-strain of the fluid's velocity $\mathbf{v}$ and\ $\mathsf{(n},% \mathsf{s)}$ is the pair formed by the normal and tangent vectors to the boundary. We establish the solvability of this problem in the class of solutions with $L_{p}-$bounded \ vorticity, $p\in (2,\infty ].$ To prove the solvability we realize the passage to the limit in Navier-Stokes equations with vanishing viscosity.

Abstract:In this article we derive Biot-Savar law for exterior 2D domain. No-slip condition in terms of vorticity is expressed in integral form. For non-stationary fluid dynamics equations no-slip condition generates affine invariant manifold and no-slip integral relations on vorticity can be transferred to Robin-type boundary condition.

Abstract:This paper concerns the well-posedness of subsonic flows in a three-dimensional finitely long cylinder with arbitrary cross section. We establish the existence and uniqueness of subsonic flows in the Sobolev space by prescribing the normal component of the momentum, the vorticity, the entropy, the Bernoulli's quantity at the entrance and the normal component of the momentum at the exit. One of the key points in the analysis is to utilize the deformation-curl decomposition for the steady Euler system introduced in \cite{WX19} to deal with the hyperbolic and elliptic modes. Another one is to employ the separation of variables to improve the regularity of solutions to a deformation-curl system near the intersection between the entrance and exit with the cylinder wall.

Unbounded Yudovich Solutions of the Euler Equations

Abstract:In this article, we will study unbounded solutions of the 2D incompressible Euler equations. One of the motivating factors for this is that the usual functional framework for the Euler equations (e.g. based on finite energy conditions, such as $L^2$) does not respect some of the symmetries of the problem, such as Galileo invariance. Our main result, global existence and uniqueness of solutions for initial data with square-root growth $O(|x|^{\frac{1}{2} - \epsilon})$ and bounded vorticity, is based on two key ingredients. Firstly an integral decomposition of the pressure, and secondly examining local energy balance leading to solution estimates in local Morrey type spaces. We also prove continuity of the initial data to solution map by a substantial adaptation of Yudovich's uniqueness argument.

Abstract:The div-curl system arises in many fields including electromagnetism and fluid dynamics. We are particularly interested in the div-curl problem in 2D multiply-connected domains, as a simplified model of flow around airfoils. In such domains, well-posedness of the problem depends on the prescription of additional line integrals (circulation), apart from standard boundary conditions. We apply the DPG method to the ultraweak formulation of the problem and impose the circulation condition in a constrained minimization framework, which results in a mixed problem. We prove the discrete stability with Brezzi's theory and demonstrate convergence with numerical experiments in a toroidal domain. We also perform h -adaptive refinements based on the DPG a posteriori error estimator, and obtain much faster convergence rate in the presence of singularity. The method is lastly applied to simulate the non-lifting flow around a NACA 0012 airfoil.

Abstract:In their classical work (Sammartino and Caflisch in Commun Math Phys 192(2):463–491, 1998), Caflisch and Sammartino established the inviscid limit and boundary layer expansions of vanishing viscosity solutions to the incompressible Navier–Stokes equations for analytic data on a half-space. The extension to an exterior domain faces a fundamental difficulty that the corresponding linear semigroup may not be contractive in analytic spaces as was the case on the half-space (Nguyen and Nguyen in Arch Ration Mech Anal 230(3):1103–1129, 2018). In this paper, we resolve this open problem for a much larger class of initial data. The resolution is due to the fact that it suffices to propagate solutions that are analytic only near the boundary, following the framework developed in the recent works that involve the boundary vorticity formulation, the analyticity estimates on the Green function, the adapted geodesic coordinates near a boundary, and the Sobolev-analytic iterative scheme.

Abstract:We study solutions to stationary Navier–Stokes system in a two dimensional exterior domain. We prove that any such solution with a finite Dirichlet integral converges to a constant vector at infinity uniformly. No additional conditions (on symmetry or smallness, etc.) are assumed. In the proofs we develop the ideas of the classical papers of Gilbarg and Weinberger (Ann Sc Norm Pisa (4) 5:381–404, 1978 ) and Amick (Acta Math 161:71–130, 1988 ).

Abstract:In this paper, we study the initial boundary value problem and vanishing viscosity limit for incompressible axisymmetric Navier–Stokes equations with swirls in the exterior of a cylinder under Navier-slip boundary condition. In the first part, we prove the existence of a unique global solution with the axisymmetric initial data u 0 ν ∈ L σ 2 ( Ω ) and axisymmetric force f ∈ L 2 ( [ 0 , T ] ; L 2 ( Ω ) ) . This result improves the initial regularity condition on the global well-posedness result obtained by K Abe and G Seregin (2020 Proc. R. Soc. Edinburgh A 150 1671–98) and extends their boundary condition. In the second part, we make the first attempt to investigate the inviscid limit of unforced viscous axisymmetric flows with swirls and prove that the viscous axisymmetric flows with swirls converge to inviscid axisymmetric flows without swirls under the condition ‖ r u 0 θ ν ‖ L 2 ( Ω ) = O ( ν ) . Some new uniform estimates, independent of the viscosity, are obtained here. The second result can be thought as a follow-up work to the previous work by K Abe (2020 J. Math. Pures Appl. 137 1–32), where the inviscid limit for the same equations without swirls in an infinite cylinder was studied.

Abstract:This paper is concerned with the following Hamilton system for the curl–curl operator {[ ∇× (∇× U_1)=f_2(x,U_2) in Ω ,; ∇× (∇× U_2)=f_1(x,U_1) in Ω ,; ν× U_1=ν× U_2=0 on ∂Ω ]. in a simply connected bounded Lipschitz domain Ω⊂ℝ^3 with connected boundary, where ∇× denotes the curl operator in ℝ^3 and ν :∂Ω→ℝ^3 is the exterior normal. By using some variational approaches inspired by Szulkin and Weth (J Funct Anal 257(12):3802–3822, 2009) and Bartsch and Mederski (Arch Ration Mech Anal 215(1):283–306, 2015), we show that there exists a ground state solution for the above system if f_1 and f_2 are both subcritical and satisfy some other growth conditions and convexity conditions. Furthermore, if the nonlinearities are both even, we establish the existence of infinitely many solutions. Finally, we prove the existence of two types of cylindrically symmetric solutions under some symmetry conditions on the domain and the nonlinearities.
Existence of steady Navier-Stokes flows exterior to an infinite cylinder

Abstract:We consider the 3D steady Navier-Stokes system on the exterior of an infinite cylinder under the action of an external force. We are concerned with the class of solutions in which the velocity field is vertically uniform and at rest at horizontal infinity. This configuration includes the 2D exterior problem for the steady Navier-Stokes system known to have characteristic difficulties. We prove the existence of solutions in the above class for a given nonsymmetric external force with suitable decay. The proof can be adapted to the 2D problem and gives a generalization of H. (2023) in view of the regularity of solutions.

Abstract:In this survey, we study the boundary value problem for the stationary Navier–Stokes system in planar exterior domains. With no-slip boundary condition and a prescribed constant limit velocity at infinity, this problem describes stationary Navier–Stokes flows around cylindrical obstacles. Leray’s invading domains method is presented as a starting point. Then we discuss the boundedness and convergence of general D-solutions (solutions with finite Dirichlet integrals) in exterior domains. For the Leray solutions of the flow around an obstacle problem, we study the nontriviality, and the justification of the limit velocity at small Reynolds numbers. Further, under the same assumption of small Reynolds numbers the global uniqueness theorem for the problem is established in the class of D-solutions, its proof deals with the accurate perturbative analysis based on the linear Oseen system, inspired by classical Finn-Smith technique; the classical Amick and Gilbarg–Weinberger papers are involved here as well. The forced Navier–Stokes system in the whole plane is also presented as a closely related problem. A list of unsolved problems is given at the end of the paper.
On a Curvature Flow in a Band Domain with Unbounded Boundary Slopes

Abstract:We consider an anisotropic curvature flow $V= A(\mathbf{n})H + B(\mathbf{n})$ in a band domain $\Omega :=[-1,1]\times R$, where $\mathbf{n}$, $V$ and $H$ denote the unit normal vector, normal velocity and curvature, respectively, of a graphic curve $\Gamma_t$. We consider the case when $A>0>B$ and the curve $\Gamma_t$ contacts $\partial_\pm \Omega$ with slopes equaling to $\pm 1$ times of its height (which are unbounded when the solution moves to infinity). First, we present the global well-posedness and then, under some symmetric assumptions on $A$ and $B$, we show the uniform interior gradient estimates for the solution. Based on these estimates, we prove that $\Gamma_t$ converges as $t\to \infty$ in $C^{2,1}_{\text{loc}} ((-1,1)\times R)$ topology to a cup-like traveling wave with {\it infinite} derivatives on the boundaries.

Abstract:In this paper, we propose a new vorticity boundary condition for the three-dimensional incompressible Navier-Stokes equation for a general smooth domain in R3. This boundary condition is motivated by the generalized Navier-slip boundary condition involving the vorticity. It is shown first that such an initial boundary value problem is well-posed at least local in time. Furthermore, more importantly, we obtain some estimates on rate of convergence in C([0, T], H1(Ω)) and C([0, T], H2(Ω)) of the solutions to the corresponding solutions of the ideal Euler equations with the standard slip boundary condition.

Abstract:In this article, we first consider solutions to a semilinear elliptic problem in divergence form \begin{equation*} \begin{cases} -\varepsilon^2\text{div}(K(x)\nabla u)= (u-q|\ln\varepsilon|)^{p}_+,\ \ &x\in \Omega,\\ u=0,\ \ &x\in\partial \Omega \end{cases} \end{equation*} for small values of $ \varepsilon $. We prove that there exists a family of clustered solutions which have arbitrary many bubbles and collapse into given maximum points of $ q^2\sqrt{\det K} $ as $ \varepsilon\to0. $ Then as an application, we construct clustered traveling-rotating helical vortex solutions to Euler equations in infinite cylinders, such that the support set of corresponding vortices consists of several helical tubes concentrating near a single helix.

Non-uniqueness of admissible solutions for the 2D Euler equation with $L^p$ vortex data

Abstract:For any $2<p<\infty$ we prove that there exists an initial velocity field $v^\circ\in L^2$ with vorticity $\omega^\circ\in L^1\cap L^p$ for which there are infinitely many bounded admissible solutions $v\in C_tL^2$ to the 2D Euler equation. This shows sharpness of the weak-strong uniqueness principle, as well as sharpness of Yudovich's proof of uniqueness in the class of bounded admissible solutions. The initial data are truncated power-law vortices. The construction is based on finding a suitable self-similar subsolution and then applying the convex integration method. In addition, we extend it for $1<p<\infty$ and show that the energy dissipation rate of the subsolution vanishes at $t=0$ if and only if $p\geq 3/2$, which is the Onsager critical exponent in terms of $L^p$ control on vorticity in 2D.
