Abstract:Polymer matrix is vulnerable to fire hazards and needs to add flame retardants to enhance its performance and make its application scenarios more extensive. At this stage, it is more necessary to add multiple flame-retardant elements and build a multi-component synergistic system. Metal organic frameworks (MOFs) have been studied for nearly three decades since their introduction. MOFs are known for their structural advantages but have only been applied to flame-retardant polymers for a relatively short period of time. In this paper, we review the development of MOFs utilized as flame retardants and analyze the flame-retardant mechanisms in the gas phase and condensed phase from the original MOF materials, modified MOF composites, and MOF-derived composites as flame retardants, respectively. The effects of carbon-based materials, phosphorus-based materials, nitrogen-based materials, and biomass on the flame-retardant properties of polymers are discussed in the context of MOFs. The construction of MOF multi-structured flame retardants is also introduced, and a variety of MOF-based flame retardants with different morphologies are shown to broaden the ideas for subsequent research.

Abstract:Metal organic frameworks (MOFs)-derived flame retardants have been recently emerged as a new class of additives in polymeric materials to reduce the fire hazard during application in situations that require high fire safety. In terms of tailored chemical components, tunable nanostructure and abundant porosity, MOFs-based flame retardants display charming features compared to the traditional ones. Typical MOFs, such as zeolitic imidazolate frameworks (ZIFs), MILs (MIL for Materials Institute Lavoisier), UiOs (UiO for University of Oslo), combined with newly designed counterparts, have been employed directly or utilized after modification in variety of universal plastics including epoxy resin, polyurethane, poly(lactic acid), polystyrene, etc. A work need to be come out to run through the research process and methods recently reported surrounding this novel technology. This review article born at the right moment aims to summarize the most relevant and up-to-date advances in MOFs and their derivatives for flame retardant polymeric materials mainly in the past three years. The main block sheds light on the mentality of designing for MOFs-based flame retardants via structural and molecular devise. Special attention will be paid to the flame retardant efficiency and corresponding mechanism of different kinds of MOFs-based flame retardants in polymer composites. The above introduction develops in line with pristine MOFs, MOFs as synergist, modified MOFs, MOFs' hybrids and MOF derivatives. Finally, we will provide a brief comment on forthcoming research opportunities and challenges for future growth of MOFs-based flame retardants in polymeric materials.

Abstract:Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are considered as the potential flame retardant substances with proper flame retardancy. Despite their unique structural features and adjustable chemical composition, MOFs alone could hardly meet all the requirements of the commercial flame retardant applications. Recently, co-application of MOFs and inorganic or organic additives has been introduced as a novel approach to obtaining highly efficient flame retardant polymer nanocomposites. The synergistic effect of these additives can resolve the limitations of MOFs. This review addresses the flame retardant mechanism of MOFs, and their composites application and new prospects of MOFs to promote fire safety in polymers. This review focuses on the latest studies on MOFs as efficient flame retardant additives for diverse polymer composites and their impact on thermal stability and flame retardancy.

Abstract:Abstract High flammability of polymers has become a major issue which has restricted its applications. Recently, highly crystalline materials and metal–organic frameworks (MOFs), which consisted of metal ions and organic linkers, have been intensively employed as novel fire retardants (FRs) for a variety of polymers (MOF/polymer). The MOFs possessed abundant transition metal species, fire-retardant elements and potential carbon source accompanied with the facile tuning of the structure and property, making MOF, its derivatives and MOF hybrids promising for fire retardancy research. The recent progress and strategies to prepare MOF-based FRs are emphasized and summarized. The fire retardancy mechanisms of MOF/polymer composites are explained, which may guide the future design for efficient MOF-based FRs. Finally, the challenges and prospects related to different MOF-based FRs are also discussed and aim to provide a fast and holistic overview, which is beneficial for researchers to quickly get up to speed with the latest development in this field.

Abstract:Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), as a new family of nanomaterials with multiple dimensions, present enormous potential in different applications due to their high specific surface area and porosity, easy chemical functionalization, and excellent designability of nanostructure. These peculiar properties make MOFs promising alternatives as nanofillers for the fabrication of high-performance and multifunctional composites. In the past five years from 2017 to 2022, many researchers have investigated the flame retardant effects and mechanisms of MOFs in various polymeric materials. Statistical analysis based on bibliometrics showed that the research of MOFs flame retardant epoxy composites accounts for about 40% of the flame retardant field of MOFs, which is also very necessary to be sorted out separately. And to our knowledge there is no comprehensive report on MOFs flame retardant epoxy composites. Here, this review provides the latest advances of MOFs in flame retardant epoxy composites using pure MOFs, MOFs derivatives, functionalized MOFs, and synergistic systems based on MOFs and other functional components. The modification strategies and flame retardant efficiency of MOFs-based flame retardants are analyzed with special emphasis on the flame retardant mechanisms of different components. In addition, most MOFs-based flame retardant composites exhibit multiple functions that benefit from their inherent properties such as wave absorption as well as mechanical enhancement, thus promising in some high-end applications. Finally, the opportunities and challenges for the future development of MOFs-based flame retardants were summarized and prospected. This work is also expected to facilitate researchers to quickly understand the latest developments in this field and guide their effective design.

Abstract:Metal‐organic frameworks: A solution for greener polymeric materials with low fire hazards.·Green flame retardant polymer materials mainly include materials prepared from biodegradable or recyclable MOF flame retardants and MOF flame retardant renewable matrix.·The biological modifiers of MOFs mainly include phytic acid, dopamine, and cyclodextrin. The renewable matrix mainly includes polylactic acid, wood, and cotton fabric. The non‐degradability of polymeric materials and the flammability of their products have resulted in significant environmental pollution. Metal‐organic frameworks (MOFs) serve as innovative flame retardants, featuring a high specific surface area, ample pore volume, and customizable structure. By leveraging the structural adjustability of MOFs, biological modifiers containing flame retardant elements can be integrated into MOFs, thereby ensuring flame retardation while imparting biodegradable properties. Moreover, the issue of material pollution can be effectively addressed by utilizing MOFs as flame retardants within renewable polymer matrices. Recently, an increasing number of researchers have concentrated on developing green flame‐retardant polymer materials using MOFs. However, as far as is known, no comprehensive review on green polymers with minimal fire risk produced using MOFs currently exists. Consequently, this study reviews the recent advancements in the development of green flame‐retardant polymer materials utilizing MOFs, covering the preparation and utilization of bio‐based and recyclable MOFs. Additionally, a flame‐retardant renewable matrix based on MOFs is also synthesized. Furthermore, this review anticipates discussing the benefits and drawbacks associated with using MOFs to manufacture green flame‐retardant polymer products. This work aims to assist researchers in rapidly comprehending the most recent advancements in this field and guiding efficient design.

Abstract:<p>Metal-organic flame retardants (MOFRs) have been constantly applied to enhance fire safety of polymers. Metallic compounds positively improve the MOFRs' performance in suppressing smoke and toxic gases emissions during combustion of polymers. While organics endow MOFRs with the possibility of high efficiency and excellent compatibility. Based on the combination types between organics and metallic compounds, MOFRs are systematically divided into three categories in this review, that is, organic modified inorganic flame retardants (OMIFRs), metal-organic salts (MOSs) and metal-organic frameworks (MOFs). Metallic components in OMIFRs are bonded with organics in three approaches: encapsulation, intercalation and chemical grafting. Metal ions in MOSs can be replaced via ion-exchange method and thus produce different organometallic salts. Based on sodium alginate, phytic acid and phosphate, various high-efficiency flame-retardant alginates, phytates and metal-organic phosphates are synthesized and applied. As burgeoning flame-retardant substance, MOFs are divided into different types based on types of ligands, that is 2-MIM, aromatic polyacids, and other synthesized materials. Under guidelines of molecular design and metal-organic synergistic flame-retardant mechanisms, MOFRs will be continuously updated and developed. This review summarizes combustion behaviors of polymer/MOFRs composites and presents short comments about upcoming research opportunities and challenges in this field.</p>

Abstract:The new developments and major results in the fields of flame retarding polymeric nanocomposites are reviewed. The incorporation of flame-retardants in a polymer can avoid a risk of combustion of the polymer in a fire.However,conventional flame retardants,such as halogenated,phosphorous,or metallic additives,have a number of negative attributes.For example,they usually impact the mechanical properties of the polymer or promote the polymer to produce much fume.The nanoparticles of flame-retardants have many advantages,such as great efficiency,functionality,reduced fuming,environmental friendliness and low loading,which promote the application of them in the polymeric composites.Therefore,it is expected that these nanocomposites exhibit the unusual combination of reduced flammability,improved physical properties,and thermostable properties and so on.

Abstract:Flame-retardant (FR) additives are commonly used to improve the fire safety of synthetic polymers, which are widely employed in manufactured consumer goods. Incorporation of an FR in a polymer typically leads to deterioration of its mechanical properties. It also manifests itself in non-negligible volatile organic compound (VOC) release, which in turn increases environmental risks carried by both the application and disposal of the corresponding consumer goods. Herein, we present a hierarchical strategy for the design of composite materials, which ensures simultaneous improvement of both mechanical and fire-safety properties of polymers while limiting the VOC release. Our strategy employs porous metal-organic framework (MOF) particles to provide a multifunctional interface between the FR molecules and the polymer. Specifically, we demonstrate that the particles of environmentally friendly HKUST-1 MOF can be infused by a modern FR-dimethyl methylphosphonate (DMMP)-and then embedded into widely used unsaturated polyesters. The DMMP-HKUST-1 additive endows the resulting composite material with improved processability, flame retardancy, and mechanical properties. Single-crystal X-ray diffraction, thermogravimetric analysis, and computational modeling of the additive suggest the complete pore filling of HKUST-1 with DMMP molecules being bound to the open metal sites of the MOF.

Abstract:Most organic polymeric materials have high flammability, for which the large amounts of smoke, toxic gases, heat, and melt drips produced during their burning cause immeasurable damages to human life and property every year. Despite some desirable results having been achieved by conventional flame-retardant methods, their application is encountering more and more difficulties with the ever-increasing high flame-retardant requirements such as high flame-retardant efficiency, great persistence, low release of heat, smoke, and toxic gases, and more importantly not deteriorating or even enhancing the overall properties of polymers. Under such condition, some advanced flame-retardant methods have been developed in the past years based on "all-in-one" intumescence, nanotechnology, in situ reinforcement, intrinsic char formation, plasma treatment, biomimetic coatings, etc., which have provided potential solutions to the dilemma of conventional flame-retardant methods. This review briefly outlines the development, application, and problems of conventional flame-retardant methods, including bulk-additive, bulk-copolymerization, and surface treatment, and focuses on the raise, development, and potential application of advanced flame-retardant methods. The future development of flame-retardant methods is further discussed.

Covalent Metal–organic Porous Polymer on ZIF-67 Realize Anti-Uv and Highly Stressed Flame Retardant Epoxy Composites

Abstract:Ferrocene (Fc) and metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) are established as effective functional additives in polymer composites, known for their synergistic effects. However, simple physical mixing does not fully harness their potential. To optimize their performance, we developed a method to graft ferrocene onto zeolitic imidazolate frameworks (ZIFs) via a Schiff base structure, followed by constructing a ferrocene-based covalent metal–organic porous polymer (CMOPP) network using Friedel-Crafts alkylation. This approach addresses the mesoporous structure limitation in ZIFs. During this process, the imidazole ligands are etched, yielding a yolk-shell structured, hierarchically nanoporous flame retardant. The synergy between ferrocene and ZIF significantly enhances the UV protection of epoxy resin, with a 99.1% reduction in UV transmittance. Additionally, ferrocene improves the filler-matrix compatibility, increasing tensile strength by 15.1%. This combination of flame-retardant elements and the porous structure’s adsorption capacity imparts exceptional flame retardancy and smoke suppression to the epoxy resin, evidenced by a Limiting Oxygen Index of 28.3% and a V-0 rating in the UL-94 test. Notable reductions include 56.5% in peak heat release rate, 55.1% in peak smoke production rate, and 71.6% in peak carbon monoxide production. This work introduces a novel strategy for designing high-performance multifunctional flame retardants.

Abstract:This article presents a vision for advancing the development of next-generation flame-retardant materials through the utilization of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs). The proposed vision is centered on four key areas: industrialization, multifunctionality, ligand synthesis, and derivatives. By optimizing production processes, customizing MOFs for specific properties and applications, and developing novel ligands and derivatives, the effectiveness and versatility of MOFs as flame-retardant materials can be significantly enhanced. This vision represents a promising direction for the field that has the potential to address critical safety concerns across various industries.

Abstract:In this work, a series of transition metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) were prepared through self-assembly of organic bridging ligands and transition metal ions. The structure of MOFs samples was analyzed by XRD, FTIR, TG, and TEM. The influences of MOFs on flame resistance, toxicity reduction, and smoke suppression of epoxy were explored in detail. The findings presented that low addition amount of MOFs had a positive effect on decreasing the fire hazards of epoxy. Loading of 2 mass% MOFs into epoxy led to the decrease in thermal degradation rate and increase in char yields. Meanwhile, the values of peak heat release rate, total heat release, and average mass loss rate of epoxy composites were cut down effectively, in comparison with neat epoxy. Moreover, the remarkable decrease in smoke production rate, total smoke production, and CO, CO2 yield could be provided by cone calorimeter test. The char residues after cone calorimeter test were investigated by SEM and Raman spectra, and the flame-retardant mechanism was discussed.

Abstract:Flame-retardant polymer nanocomposites exhibiting remarkably improved flame-retardant and environmentally friendly properties have been widely utilized to replace traditional halogenated fire retardants. In this review, flame retardant mechanisms of polymer nanocomposites such as barrier effect, char formation, three-dimensional nanostructure, and radical trapping, are discussed to explain how nanomaterials can be incorporated in a polymer to reduce the polymer's flammability. Properties that are critical in governing the flame-retardant mechanisms of polymer nanocomposites are discussed in this review. Specifically, category, surface property, and concentration of nanomaterials are critical in affecting flame-retardant properties of polymer nanocomposites and are reviewed in detail. Nanocomposite categories, especially, silicates (clays), inorganic hydroxides, carbonaceous materials, metal oxides, polysilsequioxanes, and their combinations are well described. The use of synergism and surface modification of nanomaterials are important strategies for optimizing flame retardancy of polymer nanocomposites. Abstract:Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are crystalline porous materials constructed by metal nodes and organic linkers. A series of key features such as high surface area, catalytic performance provide a platform for preparing MOF-based fire retardants (FRs). However, understanding the role of the porous structure and catalytic metal species remains a key issue towards the fire retardant mechanism of MOFs. This work systematically studied the difference between the performance of a zirconium based MOF(UiO-66), its derived porous zirconium oxide (U-ZrO2), and commercial ZrO2 (C-ZrO2), in imparting fire retardancy, suppressing smoke and charring property towards epoxy. With the presence of 3wt% porous U-ZrO2, EP/3U-ZrO2 sample showed better performance in suppressing heat (10% reduction) and toxic carbon monoxide (14% reduction) than that of EP/3C-ZrO2 due to the “tortuous path” effect and formation of a compact char. Moreover, a greater number of exposed catalytic sites on MOF compared with thermally treated metal oxide significantly reduced total smoke production (TSP) of the EP/MOF sample by 38%. Catalytic carbonization attributed to the great number of metal sites on MOF is crucial in providing compact char residue, thereby suppressing smoke for EP. In perspective, this work opens a window for understanding the fire retardant mechanism of MOF-based FR towards polymers.

Abstract:In this work, iron-based and cobalt-based metal organic frameworks (MOFs) were successfully synthesized by a facile solvothermal method. The obtained MOFs were added into polystyrene (PS) as flame retardants for the first time. The results of thermal gravimetric analysis and cone calorimetry indicated the addition of MOFs significantly enhanced the thermostability and flame retardancy of the PS composites. Compared with that of neat PS, greater than 14% and 28% decreases in the peak heat release rate were observed for PS/Fe-MOF and PS/Co-MOF, respectively, suggesting a flame retardant effect of MOFs. Based on thermogravimetric analysis infrared spectrometry results and the analysis of combustion residues, the possible mechanism of the enhanced thermostability and flame retardancy of the PS composites was proposed as the combination of thermal barrier effect and catalytic effect of MOFs, which would allow promising application in the development of fire safety polymer materials.

The results indicated that wet modification was better than dry modification, proper modifier was SCA313 added with fatty acid and the dosage of SCA313 was 0.6%, and fatty acid was 1.0%. The modifier was covering the surface of the filler due to the synergies of chemical adsorption and covering effects.
