Abstract:Compared with traditional lithium-ion systems, solid-state batteries could achieve high safety and energy density. Although great improvements have been made, especially in solid-state electrolyte, fundamental challenges still remain in the solid-state systems in terms of chemistry and mechanics. This review summarizes the fundamental issues in solid-state batteries with a focus on three critical phenomena: (i) the principles of developing high ionic conductors, (ii) structural evolution at chemically unstable electrolyte-electrode interfaces, and (iii) the effects of manufacturing solid-state batteries, including electrode, electrolyte design. The future perspectives are also outlined to guide the development of solid-state batteries.

Abstract:Rechargeable batteries have become indispensable implements in our daily life and are considered a promising technology to construct sustainable energy systems in the future. The liquid electrolyte is one of the most important parts of a battery and is extremely critical in stabilizing the electrode-electrolyte interfaces and constructing safe and long-life-span batteries. Tremendous efforts have been devoted to developing new electrolyte solvents, salts, additives, and recipes, where molecular dynamics (MD) simulations play an increasingly important role in exploring electrolyte structures, physicochemical properties such as ionic conductivity, and interfacial reaction mechanisms. This review affords an overview of applying MD simulations in the study of liquid electrolytes for rechargeable batteries. First, the fundamentals and recent theoretical progress in three-class MD simulations are summarized, including classical, ab initio, and machine-learning MD simulations (section 2). Next, the application of MD simulations to the exploration of liquid electrolytes, including probing bulk and interfacial structures (section 3), deriving macroscopic properties such as ionic conductivity and dielectric constant of electrolytes (section 4), and revealing the electrode-electrolyte interfacial reaction mechanisms (section 5), are sequentially presented. Finally, a general conclusion and an insightful perspective on current challenges and future directions in applying MD simulations to liquid electrolytes are provided. Machine-learning technologies are highlighted to figure out these challenging issues facing MD simulations and electrolyte research and promote the rational design of advanced electrolytes for next-generation rechargeable batteries.

Abstract:Non‐aqueous electrolytes, generally consisting of metal salts and solvating media, are indispensable elements for building rechargeable batteries. As the major sources of ionic charges, the intrinsic characters of salt anions are of particular importance in determining the fundamental properties of bulk electrolyte, as well as the features of the resulting electrode‐electrolyte interphases/interfaces. To cope with the increasing demand for better rechargeable batteries requested by emerging application domains, the structural design and modifications of salt anions are highly desired. Here, salt anions for lithium and other monovalent (e.g., sodium and potassium) and multivalent (e.g., magnesium, calcium, zinc, and aluminum) rechargeable batteries are outlined. Fundamental considerations on the design of salt anions are provided, particularly involving specific requirements imposed by different cell chemistries. Historical evolution and possible synthetic methodologies for metal salts with representative salt anions are reviewed. Recent advances in tailoring the anionic structures for rechargeable batteries are scrutinized, and due attention is paid to the paradigm shift from liquid to solid electrolytes, from intercalation to conversion/alloying‐type electrodes, from lithium to other kinds of rechargeable batteries. Atomic Insights into the Fundamental Interactions in Lithium Battery Electrolytes

Abstract:Building high-energy-density batteries is urgently demanded in contemporary society because of the continuous increase in global energy consumption and the quick upgrade of electronic devices, which promotes the use of high-capacity lithium metal anodes and high-voltage cathodes. Achieving a stable interface between electrolytes and highly reactive electrodes is a prerequisite to constructing a safe and powerful battery, in which electrolyte regulation plays a decisive role and largely determines the long-term and rate performances. The bulk and interfacial properties of electrolytes are directly determined by the fundamental interactions and the as-derived microstructures in electrolytes. Different from experimental trial-and-error approaches, the rational bottom-up design of electrolytes based on a comprehensive and deep understanding of the fundamental interactions between electrolyte compositions and the structure–function relationship is highly expected to accelerate breaking through the bottleneck in current technology and realizing next-generation Li batteries.In this Account, we afford an overview of our recent attempts toward rational electrolyte design for safe Li batteries based on a comprehensive understanding of the cation–solvent, cation–anion, and anion–solvent interactions in electrolytes. The formation of cation–solvent complexes decreases the reductive stability but increases the oxidative stability of solvent molecules according to frontier molecular orbital theory, whereas the introduction of anions into the Li+ solvation shell has the opposite function in regulating solvent stability compared with cations. The competitive coordination of anions and solvent molecules with cations directly determines the salt solubility in electrolytes and the formation of ion pairs and aggregates, which widely exist in high-concentration electrolytes and stabilize Li metal anodes. An easy and effective route to dissolve lithium nitrate in ester electrolytes is accordingly proposed. Although anions are hardly solvated in routine solvents, solvents with a high acceptor number or an exposed positive charge site are highly expected to enhance the anion–solvent interaction. The solvation of anions will have a strong influence on electrolytes, including regulating the electrolyte solvation structure and stability, increasing the cation transference number, and promoting salt dissociation. The emerging Li bond theory and big-data approaches, combined with first-principles calculations and experimental characterizations, are also expected to promote rational electrolyte design with much reduced time and expense.Collectively, with a comprehensive and deep understanding of the fundamental interactions in electrolytes and the structure–function relationship, bottom-up engineering of Li battery electrolytes is expected to be achieved, accelerating the applications of safe high-energy-density Li batteries. The general principles demonstrated in Li batteries are also supposed to be applicable to other battery systems and even universal electrochemistry in solutions, including fuel cells and various electrocatalyses.This article has not yet been cited by other publications.

Abstract:Over the past two decades, the solid–electrolyte interphase (SEI) layer that forms on an electrode’s surface has been believed to be pivotal for stabilizing the electrode’s performance in lithium-ion batteries (LIBs). However, more and more researchers currently are realizing that the metal-ion solvation structure (e.g., Li+) in electrolytes and the derived interfacial model (i.e., the desolvation process) can affect the electrode’s performance significantly. Thus, herein we summarize recent research focused on how to discover the importance of an electrolyte’s solvation structure, develop a quantitative model to describe the solvation structure, construct an interfacial model to understand the electrode’s performance, and apply these theories to the design of electrolytes. We provide a timely review on the scientific relationship between the molecular interactions of metal ions, anions, and solvents in the interfacial model and the electrode’s performance, of which the viewpoint differs from the SEI interpretations before. These discoveries may herald a new, post-SEI era due to their significance for guiding the design of LIBs and their performance improvement, as well as developing other metal-ion batteries and beyond.

Perspectives on both interphase and electrolytes are discussed which can direct researchers to rationally design new interphase and electrolytes for high-performance proton batteries in the future.

Abstract:Electrolytes are an essential component of all electrochemical storage and conversion devices, such as batteries. In the history of battery development, the complex nature of electrolytes has often been a bottleneck. Fundamental knowledge of electrolyte systems encompasses elucidation of structure–property relationships of the solution species. Recently, nanometric aggregates have been observed in several classes of electrolytes, including super-concentrated, redox-flow, multivalent, polymer, and ionic liquid-based electrolytes. Compared with the well-studied local solvation structures such as contact ion pairs and solvent-separated ions, these aggregates impose unique effects on the ion distribution and transport both within bulk electrolytes and at electrode/electrolyte interfaces. This Perspective highlights the discovery of the aggregates in various battery electrolytes and their impact on electrolyte properties. We also present an outlook for future studies of this emerging field of nanometric aggregates and the need for the development of new experimental and computational tools to study their properties.

Abstract:Sodium‐ion batteries (SIBs) have enjoyed speedy development in the past decades driven by sustainability and cost advantage. Electrolytes are in large part responsible for battery performances in terms of lifetime and durability. In this review, the fundamentals, recent developments, and limitations of electrolytes for SIBs are summarized and discussed in detail. Sodium‐ion batteries (SIBs), driven by sustainability and cost advantage, have been recognized as one of the most promising electrochemical energy storage devices. Electrolytes, as the most unique component that not only ionically connect while insulating electronically electrodes but also determine the eventual improvements in performance mainly regarding cycle life, Coulombic efficiency, energy density, and safety, hold the key to the practical implementation of SIBs. In this review, the fundamental design principles of Na+‐ion electrolytes and the chemical properties of the Na+ cation over the Li+ cation in terms of ion transport, salt dissolution, and solvation structure are first discussed. Then, a sequence of crucial experimental discoveries and strategical achievements in the field of electrolytes for SIBs are presented, with focuses on the ether‐based electrolytes for co‐intercalation into graphite, diluted and highly concentrated electrolytes, wide temperature range electrolytes, nonflammable electrolytes, indispensable electrolyte components (functional additives and new sodium salts). Finally, a detailed analysis of research trends of practically feasible Na+‐ion electrolytes is presented to aid in the ongoing quest for better SIBs of the future.

Abstract:Electrolytes and the associated electrode-electrolyte interfaces are crucial for the development and application of high-capacity energy storage systems.Specifically,a variety of electrolyte properties,ranging from mechanical(compressibility,vis-cosity),thermal(heat conductivity and capacity),to chemical(solubility,activity,reactivity),transport,and electrochemical(interfa-cial and interphasial),are correlated to the performance of the resultant full energy storage device.In order to facilitate the operation of novel electrode materials,extensive experimental efforts have been devoted to improving these electrolyte properties by tuning the physical design and/or chemical composition.Meanwhile,the recent development of theoretical modeling methods is providing atomistic understandings of the electrolyte's role in regulating the ion transport and enabling a functional interface.In this regard,we stand at a new frontier to take advantage of the revealed mechanistic insights into rationally design novel electrolyte systems.In this review,we first summarize the composition,solvation structure,and transport properties of conventional electrolytes as well as the formation mechanism of the electrode-electrolyte interphase.Moreover,some of the promising energy storage systems are briefly introduced.Further,approaches to stabilize the electrode-electrolyte interphase using novel electrolyte design,including electrolyte additives,high-concentration electrolytes,and solid-state electrolytes,are discussed.Some recent advances in the atom-istic modeling of these aspects are particularly focused to provide a fundamental understanding of electrolytes and a comprehensive guide for future electrolyte design.Finally,we highlight the prospects of theoretical screening of novel electrolytes.
Insights into the solvation chemistry in liquid electrolytes for lithium-based rechargeable batteries

Abstract:Lithium-based rechargeable batteries have dominated the energy storage field and attracted considerable research interest due to their excellent electrochemical performance. As indispensable and ubiquitous components, electrolytes play a pivotal role in not only transporting lithium ions, but also expanding the electrochemical stable potential window, suppressing the side reactions, and manipulating the redox mechanism, all of which are closely associated with the behavior of solvation chemistry in electrolytes. Thus, comprehensively understanding the solvation chemistry in electrolytes is of significant importance. Here we critically reviewed the development of electrolytes in various lithium-based rechargeable batteries including lithium-metal batteries (LMBs), nonaqueous lithium-ion batteries (LIBs), lithium-sulfur batteries (LSBs), lithium-oxygen batteries (LOBs), and aqueous lithium-ion batteries (ALIBs), and emphasized the effects of interactions between cations, anions, and solvents on solvation chemistry, and functions of solvation chemistry in different types of electrolytes (strong solvating electrolytes, moderate solvating electrolytes, and weak solvating electrolytes) on the electrochemical performance and redox mechanism in the abovementioned rechargeable batteries. Specifically, the significant effects of solvation chemistry on the stability of electrode-electrolyte interphases, suppression of lithium dendrites in LMBs, inhibition of the co-intercalation of solvents in LIBs, improvement of anodic stability at high cut-off voltages in LMBs, LIBs and ALIBs, regulation of redox pathways in LSBs and LOBs, and inhibition of hydrogen/oxygen evolution reactions in LOBs are thoroughly summarized. Finally, the review concludes with a prospective outlook, where practical issues of electrolytes, advanced in situ/operando techniques to illustrate the mechanism of solvation chemistry, and advanced theoretical calculation and simulation techniques such as "material knowledge informed machine learning" and "artificial intelligence (AI) + big data" driven strategies for high-performance electrolytes have been proposed.

Abstract:The field of rechargeable batteries has witnessed significant advancements driven by the increasing demand for efficient and sustainable energy technologies. As a key component of rechargeable battery systems, electrolytes play a crucial role in determining the battery reversibility and stability. Nevertheless, the unsatisfactory ion conductivity and limited low-temperature behaviors of prevailing electrolytes greatly hinder the battery application scenarios. High-entropy electrolytes (HEEs) have attracted extensive attention due to their potential to solve the above issues. However, the ambiguous concept of HEEs, the lack of guidance for electrolyte component screening and optimization, and the unclear impact of HEEs on the electrode|electrolyte interface seriously impede the practical viability of HEEs. Herein, for the first time, we present a survey of emerging HEEs, spanning from design principles to performance optimization. We summarize the ion-transport mechanisms and fundamental properties of various classes of HEEs, including liquid, quasi-solid and all-solid HEEs, and review the recent advances in rechargeable alkali metal (e.g., Li and Na)-based battery and multivalent-ion (e.g., Mg and Zn) battery systems in which their performances can be intrinsically enhanced by HEEs. In particular, the interaction between the high-entropy solvation/crystal structure and battery performance is highlighted. Finally, we point out the main challenges encountered in developing batteries coupled with HEEs and provide a perspective for future breakthroughs. This review conducts a comprehensive survey of the high-entropy effect on the key properties of electrolytes. The applications of high-entropy electrolytes in various rechargeable batteries are presented to address their critical drawbacks.

Abstract:Advanced electrolyte design is essential for building highenergy-density lithium (Li) batteries and introducing anions into the Li + solvation sheaths has been widely demonstrated as a promising strategy. However, a fundamental understanding of the critical role of anions in such electrolytes is very lacking. Herein, the anionic chemistry in regulating the electrolyte structure and stability is probed by combining computational and experimental approaches. Based on a comprehensive analysis of the lowest unoccupied molecular orbitals, the solvents and anions in Li + solvation sheaths exhibit enhanced and decreased reductive stability compared with free counterparts, respectively, which agrees with both calculated and experimental results of reduction potentials. Accordingly, new strategies are proposed to build stable electrolytes based on the established anionic chemistry. This work unveils the mysterious anionic chemistry in regulating the structure-function relationship of electrolytes and contributes to a rational design of advanced electrolytes for practical Li metal batteries.

Abstract:From the perspective of future development trend, energy issues will always accompany with the human development process. The development of new batteries that are friendly to the environment has become a global trend. Safe solid-state electrolytes with high ionic conductivity, excellent electrochemical property, high mechanical/thermal stabilfity, and good electrolyte/electrode compatibility are believed the key components to the next-generation rechargeable batteries. Therefore, from the perspective of balancing both high energy density and intrinsic safety, all-solid-state ion batteries should be further developed, while a stable, nonflammable solid-state electrolyte should be designed and optimized to match it. This paper gives a comprehensive review on the recent progress in the solid-state electrolytes for multivalent-ion batteries, mainly for magnesium-ion, calcium-ion, zinc-ion, and aluminum-ion batteries. The key aspects of solid-state electrolytes are highlighted, including the synthesis process, physicochemical properties, and electrochemical performance. All-solid-state battery now is becoming the rising star since solid-state electrolyte solves most of the problems faced by the current lithium-ion batteries, allowing the best balance between battery life, safety, and cost.

Solvent versus Anion Chemistry: Unveiling the Structure-Dependent Reactivity in Tailoring Electrochemical Interphases for Lithium-Metal Batteries

Abstract:Electrolytes are critical for the reversibility of various electrochemical energy storage systems. The recent development of electrolytes for high-voltage Li-metal batteries has been counting on the salt anion chemistry for building stable interphases. Herein, we investigate the effect of the solvent structure on the interfacial reactivity and discover profound solvent chemistry of designed monofluoro-ether in anion-enriched solvation structures, which enables enhanced stabilization of both high-voltage cathodes and Li-metal anodes. Systematic comparison of different molecular derivatives provides an atomic-scale understanding of the unique solvent structure-dependent reactivity. The interaction between Li+ and the monofluoro (-CH2F) group significantly influences the electrolyte solvation structure and promotes the monofluoro-ether-based interfacial reactions over the anion chemistry. With in-depth analyses of the compositions, charge transfer, and ion transport at interfaces, we demonstrated the essential role of the monofluoro-ether solvent chemistry in tailoring highly protective and conductive interphases (with enriched LiF at full depths) on both electrodes, as opposed to the anion-derived ones in typical concentrated electrolytes. As a result, the solvent-dominant electrolyte chemistry enables a high Li Coulombic efficiency (∼99.4%) and stable Li anode cycling at a high rate (10 mA cm-2), together with greatly improved cycling stability of 4.7 V-class nickel-rich cathodes. This work illustrates the underlying mechanism of the competitive solvent and anion interfacial reaction schemes in Li-metal batteries and offers fundamental insights into the rational design of electrolytes for future high-energy batteries.

Abstract:Despite extensive research efforts to develop non-aqueous sodium-ion batteries (SIBs) as alternatives to lithium-based energy storage battery systems, their performance is still hindered by electrode-electrolyte side reactions. As a feasible strategy, the engineering of electrolyte additives has been regarded as one of the effective ways to address these critical problems. In this review, we provide a comprehensive overview of recent progress in electrolyte additives for non-aqueous SIBs. We classify the additives based on their effects on specific electrode materials and discuss the functions and mechanisms of each additive category. Finally, we propose future directions for electrolyte additive research, including studies on additives for improving cell performance under extreme conditions, optimizing electrolyte additive combinations, understanding the effect of additives on cathode-anode interactions, and understanding the characteristics of electrolyte additives.

Abstract:Over the past decades, Li-ion battery (LIB) has turned into one of the most important advances in the history of technology due to its extensive and in-depth impact on our life. Its omnipresence in all electric vehicles, consumer electronics and electric grids relies on the precisely tuned electrochemical dynamics and interactions among the electrolytes and the diversified anode and cathode chemistries therein. With consumers' demand for battery performance ever increasing, more and more stringent requirements are being imposed upon the established equilibria among these LIB components, and it became clear that the state-of-the-art electrolyte systems could no longer sustain the desired technological trajectory. Driven by such gap, researchers started to explore more unconventional electrolyte systems. From superconcentrated solvent-in-salt electrolytes to solid-state electrolytes, the current research realm of novel electrolyte systems has grown to unprecedented levels. In this review, we will avoid discussions on current state-of-the-art electrolytes but instead focus exclusively on unconventional electrolyte systems that represent new concepts.

Abstract:Herein, an overview of pivotal research in electrolyte engineering is provided, highlighting their critical role in optimizing combinations of battery components and their compatibility. This optimization is key to improving battery performance. The objective is to foster a broader understanding of how strategic compatibility of battery components can lead to comprehensive enhancements in battery functionality. The performance of electrochemical batteries is intricately tied to the physicochemical environments established by their employed electrolytes. Traditional battery designs utilizing a single electrolyte often impose identical anodic and cathodic redox conditions, limiting the ability to optimize redox environments for both anode and cathode materials. Consequently, advancements in electrolyte technologies are pivotal for addressing these challenges and fostering the development of next‐generation high‐performance electrochemical batteries. This review categorizes perspectives on electrolyte technology into three key areas: additives engineering, comprehensive component analysis encompassing solvents and solutes, and the effects of concentration. By summarizing significant studies, the efficacy of electrolyte engineering is highlighted, and the review advocates for further exploration of optimized component combinations. This review primarily focuses on liquid electrolyte technologies, briefly touching upon solid‐state electrolytes due to the former greater vulnerability to electrode and electrolyte interfacial effects. The ultimate goal is to generate increased awareness within the battery community regarding the holistic improvement of battery components through optimized combinations.

Abstract:Highlights The working principle of the asymmetric electrolyte and the long-term-seated contradictory issues were analyzed. The characterization methods for the interfaces of anolyte/catholyte and electrolyte/electrode were summarized for revealing the fundamental mechanism of asymmetric electrolytes. The future research directions for asymmetric electrolyte systems were proposed.

Abstract:High voltage aqueous Li-ion batteries have the potential for sustainable large-scale energy storage due to their intrinsic advantages of safety, low cost, as well as environmental friendliness. “Water-in-salt” electrolytes have significantly enhanced the energy density of aqueous Li-ion batteries by extending the aqueous electrolyte stability window to 3.0 V. However, the cathodic limit and salt concentration need to be reduced, enabling to operate low cost LiMn 2 O 4 /Li 4 Ti 5 O 12 cells. In addition, gravimetric energy density of LiMn 2 O 4 /Li 4 Ti 5 O 12 , self-discharge rate, and operation temperature range remain rarely studied. This perspective aims to briefly summarize the opportunity and challenges of aqueous batteries for practical applications.
