Abstract:Nonlinear optics in whispering-gallery-mode (WGM) microresonators have attracted much attention. Owing to strong confinement of the light in a small volume, a WGM microresonator can dramatically boost the strength of light field, giving rise to enhancement of the nonlinear interactions of light with the resonator material. Here, we demonstrate highly efficient second harmonic generation (SHG) and third harmonic generation (THG) in an on-chip monocrystalline lithium niobate (LN) microresonator. Benefitting from a cyclic phase matching scheme for the transverse-electric WGMs, nonlinear wavelength conversion utilizing the largest second-order nonlinear coefficient d33, which has not been demonstrated until now despite of its obvious advantage, is successfully achieved in an X-cut LN microresonator. We obtain high conversion efficiencies in not only the SHG (3.8% mW^-1) but also the THG (0.3% mW^-2) realized through a cascaded sum-frequency process. Our results represent a major step toward the classical and quantum photonic integrated circuits.

Abstract:The realization of an efficient nonlinear parametric process in microresonators is a challenging issue largely because of an inherent difficulty in simultaneously ensuring the phase-matching condition and a coherent multiple-resonance condition for all the waves participating in the nonlinear conversion process. Here, we demonstrate highly efficient second-harmonic generation in an on-chip LiNbO3 microresonator fabricated by femtosecond-laser direct writing. We overcome the above difficulty by selectively exciting high-order modes in the fabricated thin-disk microresonator. Thanks to the low optical absorption and high nonlinear optical coefficient of LiNbO3 crystal, we achieve a normalized conversion efficiency of 1.106 x 10(-3)/mW in the on-chip LiNbO3 microdisk with a diameter of approximately 102 mu m.

Abstract:Optical second harmonic generation is a fundamental nonlinear effect with a large impact on laser technology and optical imaging/sensing. For most practical applications of second harmonic generation, high conversion efficiency is required. However, many techniques used to achieve high efficiency are limited to fabrication methods and optical energy requirements. Here, we investigate and demonstrate substantial enhancement in the conversion efficiency of second harmonic generation in a nonlinear crystal via the application of wavefront shaping. In a one dimensional understanding of second harmonic generation, a phase offset applied to the fundamental wave has no effect on the intensity of the generated light. We show that when the pump field is not a plane wave, enhanced conversion efficiency can be controlled by the application of a phase mask to the fundamental beam. This investigation of the dependence of conversion efficiency upon the transverse phase profile of the incident pump laser yields the promise of new ways to enhance nonlinear generation with limited optical energy and without the need for specific fabrication techniques.

Abstract:High quality lithium niobate thin film microresonators provide an ideal platform for on-chip nonlinear optics applications. However, the phase matching condition for efficient parametric process sets a high requirement for fabrication control. Here we demonstrate a photonic molecular structure composed of two strongly coupled lithium niobate microdisks of different diameters fabricated using femtosecond laser micromachining and focused ion beam milling. With a continuous wave excitation, rich nonlinear optical processes including cascaded four-wave mixing and stimulated Raman scattering were observed around the second harmonic wavelength. Our results indicate that the coupled microdisks form a superior system for nonlinear optical process.

Abstract:Thin-film lithium niobate (TFLN) enables extremely high-efficiency second-order nonlinear optical effects due to large nonlinear coefficient d33 and strong optical field localization. Here, we first designed and fabricated a pulley-waveguide-coupled microring resonator with an intrinsic quality factor above 9.4 x10^5 on the reverse-polarized double-layer X-cut TFLN. In such a TFLN resonator without fine domain structures, second harmonic generation with an absolute (normalized) conversion efficiency of 30% (440,000% W-1), comparable to that in periodically poled lithium niobate (PPLN) microring resonators, was realized with a sub-microwatt continuous pump. This work reduces the dependence of high-efficiency nonlinear frequency conversion on PPLN microcavities that are difficult to prepare.

Second harmonic generation with 48% conversion efficiency from cavity polygon modes in a monocrystalline lithium niobate microdisk resonator

Abstract:Thin-film lithium niobate (TFLN) based optical microresonators offer large nonlinear coefficient d_33 and high light-wave confinement, allowing highly efficient second-order optical nonlinear frequency conversion. Here, we achieved ultra-efficiency second harmonic generation (SHG) from high-Q polygon modes by maximizing the utilization of the highest nonlinear coefficient d_33 in a monocrystalline X-cut TFLN microdisk resonator for the first time. The polygon modes are designed and formed with two parallel sides perpendicular to the optical axis of the lithium niobate crystal by introducing weak perturbations into the microdisk of a tapered fiber, which maximizes the utilization of d_33. The polygon modes exhibit ultrahigh intrinsic Q factors of ~3.86X10(7), due to the fact that polygon modes are located far from the relatively rough sidewall of the microdisk. Moreover, the pump and second harmonic polygon modes share high modal overlap factor of ~80%. Consequently, SHG from cavity polygon modes with absolute conversion efficiency as high as 48.08% was realized at an on-chip pump level of only 4.599 mW without fine domain structures, surpassing the best results (23% and 30%) reported in other two domain-inversion-free phase matching schemes and even approaching the record (52%) in PPLN microresonators.

Abstract:We reveal a unique broadband natural quasi-phase-matching (QPM) mechanism underlying an observation of highly efficient second- and third-order harmonic generation at multiple wavelengths in an x-cut lithium niobate (LN) microdisk resonator. For light waves in the transverse-electric mode propagating along the circumference of the microdisk, the effective nonlinear optical coefficients naturally oscillate periodically to change both the sign and magnitude, facilitating QPM without the necessity of domain engineering in the micrometer-scale LN disk. The second-harmonic and cascaded third-harmonic waves are simultaneously generated with normalized conversion efficiencies as high as 9.9%/mW and 1.05%/mW^{2}, respectively, thanks to the utilization of the highest nonlinear coefficient d_{33} of LN. The high efficiency achieved with the microdisk of a diameter of ∼30 μm is beneficial for realizing high-density integration of nonlinear photonic devices such as wavelength convertors and entangled photon sources.

Abstract:Lithium niobate has received interest in nonlinear frequency conversion due to its wide transparency window, from ultraviolet to mid-infrared spectral regions, and large second-order nonlinear susceptibility. However, its nanostructure is generally difficult to etch, resulting in low- Q resonance and lossy nanostructures for second harmonic generation. By applying the concept of bound states in the continuum, we performed theoretical and experimental investigations on high- Q resonant etchless thin-film lithium niobate with SiO 2 nanostructures on top for highly efficient second harmonic generation. In the fabricated nanostructured devices, a resonance with a Q factor of 980 leads to the strong enhancement of second harmonic generation by over 1500 times compared with that in unpatterned lithium niobate thin film. Although the pump slightly deviates from central resonance, an absolute conversion efficiency of 6.87×10 −7 can be achieved with the fundamental pump peak intensity of 44.65 MW/cm 2 , thus contributing to the normalized conversion efficiency of 1.54×10 −5 cm 2 /GW. Our work establishes an etchless lithium niobate device for various applications, such as integrated nonlinear nanophotonics, terahertz frequency generation, and quantum information processing.
Efficient second and third harmonic generation in dual-layer lithium niobate microdisk resonator

Abstract:Lithium niobate thin film frequency doubler has extensive applications in the preparation of classical and quantum sources. In this study, we successfully fabricated microdisk resonators with a quality factor of 2.2×10 5 in reverse-polarization dual-layer x-cut lithium niobate for the first time. Based on the modal phase matching condition, efficient second harmonic generation with a record normalized conversion efficiency of ∼56000% W −1 and cascaded third harmonic generation with an efficiency of ∼6500% W −2 were obtained in the microdisk resonator. Compared with the periodically poled lithium niobate microcavity, the complex domain structure preparation processes are avoided. Our work provides a scheme for achieving highly efficient second-order nonlinear effects in non-periodically poled microcavities.

Abstract:Integrated thin-film lithium niobate platform has recently emerged as a promising candidate for next-generation, high-efficiency wavelength conversion systems that allow dense packaging and mass-production. Here we demonstrate efficient, phase-matched second harmonic generation in lithographically-defined thin-film lithium niobate waveguides with sub-micron dimensions. Both modal phase matching in fixed-width waveguides and quasi-phase matching in periodically grooved waveguides are theoretically proposed and experimentally demonstrated. Our low-loss (~ 3.0 dB/cm) nanowaveguides possess normalized conversion efficiencies as high as 41% W-1cm-2.

Abstract:Nonlinear optics has generated a wide range of applications in the fields of optical communications, biomedicine, and materials science, with nonlinear conversion efficiency serving as a vital metric for its progress. However, the weak nonlinear response of materials, high optical loss, and inhomogeneous distribution of the light field hamper the improvement of the conversion efficiency. We present a composite grating waveguide structure integrated into a Bragg reflector platform. This design achieves high Q in the spectral range by exploiting the unique properties exhibited by the bound states in the Bloch surface wave-enhanced continuum, and efficient second-harmonic generation by close-field amplification with the optical field tightly localized in a nonlinear material. By manipulating the symmetry of the grating, a precise tune over the near field within a designated wavelength range can be achieved. Specifically, we select a photonic crystal configuration supporting surface waves, employing TE polarization conditions and an asymmetry factor of −0.1 between the composite gratings. This configuration resonates at a fundamental wavelength of 783.5 nm, exhibiting an impressive Q -factor of 10 6 . Notably, at an incident light intensity of 1.33 GW/cm 2 , we achieve a normalized electric field strength of up to 940 at the fundamental frequency and a second-harmonic conversion efficiency of up to 6 × 10 −3 , significantly amplifying the second-harmonic response. The proposed configuration in this investigation has the potential to be integrated into the field of nonlinear optics for sensing frequency conversion applications.

Abstract:Second harmonic generation (SHG) is an important nonlinear process which is critical for applications, such as optical integrated circuit, nonlinear microscopy, laser, etc. Many challenges remain in the improvement of nonlinear conversion efficiency, since the typical value is of only 10-5 in nanostructures. Here, we theoretically demonstrate a periodic structure consisting of a lithium niobate (LN) bar and an LN disk, on a nanoscale (~300 nm) thin-film platform, which is proposed for a highly efficient SHG. By breaking the structure symmetry, a Fano resonance with a high Q, up to 2350 and a strong optical field enhancement reaching forty-two folds is achieved, which yields a high conversion efficiency, up to 3.165 × 10-4. In addition to its strong second harmonic (SH) signal, we also demonstrate that by applying only 0.444 V on the planar electrode configurations of the nanostructured LN, the wavelength of SH can be tuned within a 1 nm range, while keeping its relatively high conversion efficiency. The proposed structure with the high nonlinear conversion efficiency can be potentially applied for a single-molecule fluorescence imaging, high-resolution nonlinear microscopy and active compact optical device.

Abstract:Boosting second-order optical nonlinear frequency conversion over subwavelength thickness has long been pursued through optical resonance in micro- and nanophotonics. However, the availability of thin film materials with high second-order nonlinearity is limited to III-V semiconductors, which have low transparency in the visible. Here, we experimentally demonstrated strongly enhanced second harmonic generation in one-dimensional heterostructure cavities on thin film lithium niobate. A guided-mode resonance resonator and distributed Bragg reflectors are combined for both efficient coupling and electromagnetic field localization. Over 1200 times second harmonic generation enhancement is experimentally realized compared with flat thin film lithium niobate through optimizing the trade-off between quality factor and mode volume, leading to a record high normalized conversion efficiency of 2.03 x 10(-5) cm(2)/GW under 1.92 MW/cm(2) pump intensity. Our approach could inspire the miniaturization and integration of compact resonant nonlinear photonic devices on thin film lithium niobate.

Abstract:Photonic integrated circuits hold promise as miniaturized and scalable platforms for classical and quantum photonic information processing. Second-order nonlinearity (chi((2))) is the basis of many important applications such as second-harmonic generation, spontaneous parametric down-conversion, and optical parametric oscillation. Here, we present systematical investigation and optimization of the second-harmonic generation in a dual-resonant aluminum nitride microring resonator. By optimizing the quality factor, independently engineering the coupling conditions for dual-band operation, and perfectly fulfilling phase-match conditions through thermal tuning, we demonstrate a second-harmonic generation efficiency of 2500% W-1 in the low-pump-power regime. To the best of our knowledge, this is a state-of-the-art value among all the integrated photonic platforms. We also study the high-power regime where the pump power depletion is non-negligible. A conversion efficiency of 12% is realized with 27 mW pump power. Our high-efficiency second-harmonic generator enables integrated frequency conversion and frequency locking between visible and infrared systems, and our approach can also apply to other photonic platforms.
