Abstract:Solar-driven interfacial evaporation is a promising technology for obtaining freshwater from seawater and polluted water. However, the volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in wastewater can be carried into the condensate water along with the steam, decreasing water quality. Subsequently, a dual-functional evaporator was constructed by decorating MoS2 on melamine foam (MF), which could simultaneously achieve efficient solar-driven freshwater production and phenol degradation (a typical VOC). The three-dimensional interconnected pore structure of MF allowed rapid water transport and the superhydrophilic capabilities of MoS2-MF. MoS2 provided the evaporator with strong light absorption (96 %) and efficient photothermal conversion, ensuring an evaporation rate of 2.75 kg m-2 h- 1 under 1 sun. MoS2-MF exhibited good solar desalination performance in 3.5-15.0 wt% brines and long-term stability without salt accumulation. Moreover, MoS2 possessed excellent peroxymonosulfate activation, allowing MoS2-MF to achieve a phenol removal ratio of 66.80 % and increased to 80.07 % in saline water containing Cl- . In the outdoor test, MoS2-MF exhibited excellent solar desalination and phenol degradation under weak sunlight and relatively low temperatures. This bifunctional MoS2-MF evaporator offers an ingenious approach to addressing freshwater scarcity and wastewater treatment.
