Abstract:In Glass-to-Metal (GTM) seals, glass matrix composites (GMCs) are frequently utilized to enhance sealing performance. However, the incorporation of reinforcements inevitably impacts the residual stress, a critical determinant of the hermeticity of GTM seals. Hence, revealing the effect of reinforcements on the residual stress is urgently needed. This study investigates the correlation between residual stress and varying alumina content. Theoretically, the total residual stress in GTM seals comprises both intrinsic residual stress and extra compressive stress. The former is due to the thermal mismatch between the glass matrix and reinforcements, while the latter arises from the cooling-induced shrinkage of the metal housing. To empirically validate this theoretical framework, Cr3+-doped Al2O3 particles were incorporated into borosilicate glass to prepare GMCs with alumina contents ranging from 3 wt% to 20 wt%. Leveraging the stress-sensitive photoluminescence property, photoluminescence spectroscopy (PLS) was applied to experimentally measure stress, enabling a detailed examination of stress distribution within GTM seals. Concurrently, finite element modeling was employed to estimate the extra compressive stress imposed by the metal housing. The experimentally detected stresses closely align with the theoretical predictions, thus verifying the accuracy of the theoretical framework. A significant finding is the observed reduction in residual stress within GTM seals with increasing alumina content. This trend is explained through strain energy theory, offering comprehensive insights into the influence of alumina content on the residual stress. The findings provide a robust foundation for the design and optimization of the stress in GTM seals.
