Abstract:The electrochemical oxidation process is widely employed for purifying antibiotic wastewater due to its effective treatment of refractory organic pollutants. However, developing low-cost anodes that exhibit high efficiency remains a significant challenge. This study presents the preparation of a novel mixed metal oxide (MMO) anode (CuFe-Sb-SnO2) using a simple, cost-effective process. The degradation kinetics constant of ciprofloxacin in the CuFe-Sb-SnO2 electrode system (0.2354 min(-1)) is 10 times higher than that of the Sb-SnO2 electrode, which is also superior to the majority of reported anodes. Furthermore, experimental and theoretical calculations suggest that co-doping Cu and Fe in the electrode leads to surface reconstruction, which increases active site abundance, reducing charge transfer resistance, and enhancing electron transfer efficiency. Notably, we comprehensively reveal the key role of Cu and Fe as electron shuttles, accelerating electron transfer between Sn and Sb during electrocatalysis to enhance anode catalytic activity. The study offers valuable new insights for developing novel MMO electrodes and holds significant implications for efficiently degrading antibiotic wastewater through electrocatalytic oxidation processes.
