Abstract:Aromatic VOCs, like toluene, have recently attracted increasing attention for the treatment under the carbon peaking and neutrality policy. Catalytic oxidation, characterized by high efficiency and low production of secondary pollutants, has become the mainstream technology for toluene elimination. Thereinto, developing efficient and stable catalysts is essential. This work overviewed different types catalysts for oxidizing toluene, including multi-metal catalysts, high-entropy catalysts, core-shell catalysts, and post-treatment techniques for synthesized catalysts. Additionally, the catalytic reaction mechanisms and catalyst stability were elaborated. Based on the investigations, the ideas for designing novel catalysts in the future were tried to be proposed that the high-entropy catalysts and the integration of heterogeneous elements, morphology adjustment, and surface treatment should be appreciated. Meanwhile, operando or quasi-in situ technology combining with the simulation must be performed for deeply comprehending the oxidation reaction mechanisms. For the investigation of poisoning resistance, one more toxic substance should be considered, which needed to explore new anti-poisoning strategies and methods for essential resistance. All these aspects might promote developing catalyst and understanding catalysis in the field of catalytic oxidation for toluene.

Abstract:High‐silica zeolite adsorbents (ZAs), owning large capacity, humidity tolerance, chemical and thermal stability, nonflammablity, and reversible regeneration by plasma, thus are employed for toluene removal with a cycled storage‐discharge mode in this work. To solve a critical issue of low CO2 selectivity, ZA and Au catalysts are combined and a tandem effect of in‐plasma ZA and postplasma Au catalysts is achieved, featuring nearly 100% CO2 selectivity at 100% toluene conversion. High‐silica zeolite adsorbents (ZAs) are employed for plasma catalytic removal of toluene with cycled storage‐discharge mode in this work. At 5 min discharge time of the discharge stage in air plasma (20% O2 in N2), toluene conversion attains 100%, obtaining 22% CO and 26% CO2 selectivities. After 20 min discharge time, the air plasma gives the selectivities to CO of ~30% and CO2 of ~60%. For complete oxidation of toluene to CO2, ZA and Au catalysts are combined and a tandem effect of in‐plasma ZA and postplasma Au catalysts is achieved, featuring nearly 100% CO2 selectivity at 100% toluene conversion. Dependences of the tandem effect on Au loading and space velocity ratio of ZA to Au catalyst are investigated.

Abstract:This paper reports toluene decomposition with a dielectric barrier discharge (DBD) and a catalyst bed reactor in air at atmospheric pressure. Three Ag-based composite oxide catalysts are used to recycle O radicals for toluene decomposition and ozone decomposition. Toluene is not only oxidized inside the DBD non-thermal plasma (NTP) reactor by active species but also within the catalyst bed reactor via ozone to O radical conversion. Moreover, the DBD generated intermediate byproducts, such as CO, formic acid and formaldehyde, are simultaneously oxidized by the post catalysis. At a DBD specific energy density of 60 J/L, toluene decomposition efficiencies by the DBD and the DBD with the catalyst bed reactor are about 62% and 100%, respectively. In terms of toluene and/or ozone decomposition efficiencies, their chemical reactivity is in the order of NTP+Ag-Mn-O approximate to NTP+Ag-Co-O>NTP+Ag-Ce-O> NTP. The plasma and catalyst hybrid reactor always shows a better performance in comparison with either NTP or chemical catalysis alone. (C) 2013 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.
Characteristics of Back Corona Discharge in a Honeycomb Catalyst and Its Application for Treatment of Volatile Organic Compounds.

Abstract:The main technical challenges for the treatment of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) with plasma-assisted catalysis in industrial applications are large volume plasma generation under atmospheric pressure, byproduct control, and aerosol collection. To solve these problems, a back corona discharge (BCD) configuration has been designed to evenly generate nonthermal plasma in a honeycomb catalyst. Voltage-current curves, discharge images, and emission spectra have been used to characterize the plasma. Grade particle collection results and flow field visualization in the discharge zones show not only that the particles can be collected efficiently, but also that the pressure drop of the catalyst layer is relatively low. A three-stage plasma-assisted catalysis system, comprising a dielectric barrier discharge (DBD) stage, BCD stage, and catalyst stage, was built to evaluate toluene treatment performance by BCD. The ozone analysis results indicate that BCD enhances the ozone decomposition by collecting aerosols and protecting the Ag-Mn-O catalyst downstream from aerosol contamination. The GC and FTIR results show that BCD contributes to toluene removal, especially when the specific energy input is low, and the total removal efficiency reaches almost 100%. Furthermore, this removal results in the emission of fewer byproducts.

Abstract:This paper studies the toluene removal by a two-stage dielectric barrier discharge (DBD)-catalyst system with three catalysts: MnOx/ZSM-5, CoMnOx/ZSM-5, and CeMnOx/ZSM-5. V-Q Lissajous method, Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) surface area, X-ray diffraction (XRD), and X-ray photoelectron (XPS) are used to characterize the DBD and catalysts. The DBD processing partially oxidizes the toluene, and the removal efficiency has a linear relationship with ozone generation. Three DBD-catalyst systems are compared in terms of their toluene removal efficiency, Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectra, carbon balance, CO selectivity, CO2 selectivity, and ozone residual. The results show that the DBD-catalyst system with CoMnOx/ZSM-5 performs better than the other two systems. It has the highest removal efficiency of about 93.7 %, and the corresponding energy yield is 4.22 g/kWh. The carbon balance and CO2 selectivity of CoMnOx/ZSM-5 is also better than the other two catalysts. The measurements of two important byproducts including aerosols and ozone are also presented.

Abstract:This paper presents a two-stage hybrid plasma catalyst system for toluene decomposition in dry air. It consists of a dielectric barrier discharge reactor and a homemade Co-Mn catalyst bed reactor. At room temperature and under a bed gas hourly space velocity of up to 32233 h-1, the decomposition efficiency is about 92.4% when plasma specific energy density is around 100 J/L. With increasing the catalyst bed temperature to about 350 K, almost 100% of the toluene and the plasma generated O3 are decomposed simultaneously. The Fourier transform infrared spectra show that the major reaction byproducts are CO2. By means of X-ray powder diffraction, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and N2 physisorption diagnostics, we conclude that both Co3Mn3O4 and the lattice oxygen species play an important role in simultaneous toluene decomposition and ozone utilization.

Abstract:In this study, a series of Mn/ZSM-5 catalysts with different Mn contents (2, 4, and 6 wt%) were prepared as adsorbents and catalysts. The adsorption of toluene and the regeneration performance of ozone catalytic oxidation at room temperature were investigated. The results showed that the toluene conversion reaches 90 % at 30 celcius through 4 wt% Mn/ZSM-5 catalytic oxidation. The cycling and ozone utilization rate experiments re-flected that after four consecutive adsorption-ozonation cycles, 4 wt% Mn/ZSM-5 still maintained good toluene adsorption capacity. In the regeneration process, the molar ratio of ozone consumption to toluene degradation was about 7.7:1, which was approximate to the theoretical molar ratio (6:1). The product distribution on the surface of ZSM-5 and 4 wt%Mn/ZSM-5 during toluene degradation was determined by GC-MS analysis, and possible mechanism for catalytic oxidation of toluene on the surface of ZSM-5 and 4 wt%Mn/ZSM-5 were proposed.

Abstract:Based on the important effect of catalysts on the plasma-catalytic system, the CM/Z5 catalyst prepared by the incipient-wetness impregnation method is used for non-thermal plasma catalysis for toluene removal. The low-temperature plasma used is produced by dielectric barrier discharge. Toluene removal performance with single plasma is investigated by variation in experimental parameters. Results indicate that with the increase in discharge length, the selectivity of carbon dioxide increased. With the increase in toluene concentration and gas flow rate, carbon dioxide selectivity decreases gradually, while toluene conversion shows almost no difference. With the introduction of CM/Z5 catalyst into the back end of plasma, the toluene conversion rate and carbon dioxide selectivity could be significantly improved and ozone in the exhaust gas could be eliminated to meet emission standards at the same time. This work is meaningful in promoting the industrial application of plasma catalytic coupling technology to treat volatile organic compounds.

Abstract:A composite catalyst was prepared by impregnation of ZSM-5 in mixture solution of Co(NO3)2, ZrOCl2 and phosphotungstic acid (PW) and characterized by XRD, FT-IR, UV–vis, XPS, SEM and TEM techniques to confirm its structure and composition. The pre-prepared composite is composed of Co2(PO4)Cl, ZrO2, P2O5 and WO3 crystalline nanoparticles uniformly dispersed on ZSM-5 zeolite. The prepared composite demonstrates effective catalytic function for solvent-free oxidation of toluene into benzaldehyde with H2O2 oxidant, achieving 16.6% conversion and 90% selectivity. The effect of various components composed of the catalyst and reaction conditions on the catalytic function were explored. Moreover, the recovery and reusability of the catalyst were estimated, presenting good reusability.

Abstract:Incomplete mineralization and high outlet ozone concentration are two urgent issues that need to be overcome in plasma catalytic systems for the purification of volatile organic compounds (VOCs). Herein, we attempted to address these issues by coupling Ag/ZSM-5 catalyst reduced by hydrogen at different temperatures with a dielectric barrier discharge (DBD) reactor during toluene degradation. The catalyst characterization (including XRD, UV–vis, XPS, XAFS, Raman, EPR) combined with density functional theory (DFT) calculations indicated that hydrogen reduction lowered the energy between metal ions and oxygen, generating more oxygen vacancies and facilitating the transition from Ag ions to Ag 0 . The abundant vacancies influenced the electron properties in the adjacent atoms, making them catalytically active and thereby promoting the adsorption and activation of CO and O 3 . Thus, the mineralization rate and O 3 decomposition performance were significantly enhanced for the hydrogen-reduced Ag/ZSM-5 catalysts. Moreover, the L-H, E-R and MVK mechanisms were first experimentally verified in plasma catalytic system by changing the background atmosphere during toluene adsorption and discharge degradation stages. This study provides insights into the rational design of highly effective catalysts in a plasma catalytic system for the removal of VOCs.

Abstract:Catalyst Ag/ZSM-5-γ-Al2O3 was developed for toluene removal.The synergistic effects of γ-Al2O3 and ZSM-5 were analyzed.Relative humidity had little influence on the mineralization of adsorbed toluene.The decreased performance was attributed to deactivation of Ag/ZSM-5 rather than γ-Al2O3.Two-component zeolite-alumina packed dielectric barrier discharge plasma was developed to deeply mineralize toluene. Compared with packing ZSM-5 and γ-Al2O3 separately in layers, uniform mixing of ZSM-5 and γ-Al2O3 was more conducive to the mineralization of adsorbed toluene in nonthermal plasma. When the mixing ratio of ZSM-5 to γ-Al2O3 was 1:2, the mineralization rate reached 80% after discharging for 120 min. Ag supported on the catalyst surface significantly improved the selectivity of CO2. Increased relative humidity had little effect on the mineralization of adsorbed toluene, but significantly reduced the byproducts O3 and N2O. The adsorption and plasma mineralization performance of Ag/ZSM-5-γ-Al2O3 during five cycles of toluene adsorption was stable with only the peak concentration of CO showing a slight upward trend. Abstract:Mineralization of benzene,toluene,and xylene (BTX) with high efficiency at room temperature is still a challenge for the purification of indoor air.In this work,a foam Ti/Sb-Sn O 2 /β-Pb O 2 anode catalyst was prepared for electrocatalytically oxidizing gaseous toluene in an all-solid cell at ambient temperature.The complex Ti/Sb-Sn O 2 /β-Pb O 2 anode,which was prepared by sequentially deposing Sb-Sn O 2 and β-Pb O 2 on a foam Ti substrate,shows high electrocatalytic oxidation efficiency of toluene (80%) at 7 hr of reaction and high CO 2 selectivity (94.9%) under an optimized condition,i.e.,a cell voltage of 2.0 V,relative humidity of60%and a flow rate of 100 m L/min.The better catalytic performance can be ascribed to the high production rate of·OH radicals from discharging adsorbed water and the inhibition of oxygen evolution on the surface of foam Ti/Sb-Sn O 2 /β-Pb O 2 anode when compared with the foam Ti/Sb-Sn O 2 anode.Our results demonstrate that prepared complex electrodes can be potentially used for electrocatalytic removal of gaseous toluene at room temperature with a good performance.
Enhanced Catalytic Ozonation of Toluene Using Supported MnOx/USY Via Regulating the Distribution of Aluminum Species in USY by Dealumination

Abstract:Recently, the problem of VOCs pollution has become serious in many regions, especially developing countries. Herein, the distribution of aluminum species in USY was controlled by dealumination of Y zeolite under different conditions, and then the dealuminated samples were used to prepare five different supported catalysts MnOx/ USY to achieve high-efficiency catalytic ozonation of toluene at low temperature. It was found that aluminum species were successfully leached from the zeolite framework to the extra-framework, which changed the properties of the manganese oxide nanoparticles loaded on the zeolite. Moreover, the oxygen vacancies and the acid sites in different catalysts showed great differences. As the extra-framework aluminum species increased, the amount of oxygen vacancies in the catalysts decreased, while the content of acid sites exhibited a "volcano-type" trend similar to toluene conversion. The best catalysts (Mn-Y-3) maintain > 90% toluene conversion at 30 degrees C but the worst catalysts (Mn-Y-5) deactivate rapidly. With the help of in situ DRIFTS, it is found that the activation ability of toluene on the acidic sites of the catalyst is the key to the toluene conversion when the amount of oxygen vacancies is sufficient to decompose ozone into active oxygen species, and the contribution of Lewis acid sites is greater than Bronsted acid sites. It provides some theoretical guidance in designing effective catalysts for ozone catalytic oxidation of VOCs.
Tandem supported Pt and ZSM-5 catalyst with separated catalytic functions for promoting multicomponent VOCs oxidation

Abstract:The painting and electronics industries simultaneously release aromatic compounds and chlorinated organics. The development of catalysts with synergistic control of these pollutants is of great significance to achieve air purification. However, developing active catalysts while maintaining good chlorine resistance remain a huge challenge due to the difficulty of the trade-off between the redox properties and acidity and the production of polychlorinated byproducts. Herein, we introduce a novel tandem PtSn/CeO 2 &Mn/ZSM-5 catalyst and investigate its catalytic performance for multicomponent volatile organic compounds (VOCs) oxidation. The two individual catalysts, PtSn/CeO 2 and Mn/ZSM-5, were used to catalyze two distinct sequential reactions. PtSn/CeO 2 catalyzed toluene oxidation to produce CO 2 and H 2 O. Meanwhile, the introduction of SnO x favored the adsorption of trichloroethylene (TCE) molecules that prevented Pt sites from chlorine poisoning and possibly converted adsorbed TCE into intermediates, which were subsequently oxidized deeply by the nearby Mn/ZSM-5. This approach resulted in a remarkable oxidation efficiency for toluene ( T 90 = 296 °C) and TCE ( T 90 = 384 °C), with fewer unexpected toxic byproducts (chlorobenzene and 4-chlorotoluene). Furthermore, the tandem catalyst possessed excellent chlorine and water resistances. In conclusion, the above findings provide new insights into the design and/or syntheses of advanced catalysts for widespread VOCs pollution control.

Abstract:Plasma catalysis is recognized as a promising technology for the elimination of diluted volatile organic compounds (VOCs). In this study, a hybrid process was carried out using dielectric barrier discharge (DBD) and MCeZr/TiO 2 (M = Cu, Mn, Ni, and Co) catalysts for the degradation of VOCs. The plasma-catalytic system demonstrated a substantial improvement in toluene conversion and CO 2 selectivity compared to the plasma-only system owing to the synergistic effects of plasma and thermal catalysis on toluene degradation. The performance of toluene removal follows the sequence of CuCeZr/T > NiCeZr/T > CoCeZr/T > MnCeZr/T in plasma catalysis. The CuCeZr/T catalyst demonstrated the highest toluene conversion of 99.0% and a CO 2 selectivity of 91.0% at a discharge power of 30 W. Energetic electrons and reactive species generated by plasma actively participate in toluene activation in the gas phase and facilitate adsorption on the catalyst surface. The redox properties between Ce 4+ /Ce 3+ and Cu + /Cu 2+ species dictated the reducibility of the CuCeZr/T catalyst, promoting oxygen cycling during toluene oxidation and leading to enhanced catalytic performance. The pathways of toluene destruction in the plasma-catalysis system are discussed based on the analysis results of GC–MS, optical emission spectroscopy and calculations of the electron-impact reactions.

Abstract:The traditional treatment processes for volatile organic compounds (VOCs) removal generally suffered several disadvantages, such as secondary air-pollutants. To overcome these issues, wet scrubber coupled with heterogeneous UV/Fenton was developed for gaseous VOCs (i.e. toluene) removal. ZSM-5 supported iron oxide (Fe/ZSM-5) was prepared as a multifunctional catalyst for activation of H2O2 and enhancement of gas-liquid mass transfer. Toluene was removed efficiently by this coupled process with the removal efficiency of 85% during 120 min. Many intermediates were detected in the solution by GC-MS while no intermediates were observed in the outlet gas, suggesting that wet scrubber coupled with heterogeneous UV/Fenton could significantly reduce secondary air pollutants. The possible mechanism of toluene oxidation was proposed including the physical adsorption by Fe/ZSM-5 and OH oxidation. This study provides an environmentally benign and highly efficient chemical scrubbing process for gaseous VOCs removal.

Abstract:A novel tandem temperature-pulse oxidation (TTPO) concept for energy-efficient catalytic removal of formaldehyde and benzene is proposed and realized over zeolite-hosted platinum catalysts. At room temperature, formaldehyde is oxidized; meanwhile, benzene is stored in the zeolite domain. The adsorbed benzene can be burned off in a successive temperature pulse at 473 K, making the surface active sites available for the next cycle.

Abstract:The removal of volatile organic compounds is an important aspect of sustainability and environmental protection. Catalytic oxidation is one of the most efficient routes to achieve this. The K+ form of an aluminium-rich Beta zeolite-supported Pt nanoparticle (2.2 nm) [Pt/KBeta-seed-directed synthesis (SDS)] catalyst is very active for the low-temperature catalytic removal of toluene and results in full conversion at a much lower temperature than a conventional KBeta-supported Pt nanoparticle (Pt/KBeta-TEA) catalyst. The higher activity of the Pt/KBeta-SDS catalyst compared with the Pt/KBeta-TEA catalyst is related to the advantages of the higher K+ content and fewer terminal silanol defects in the KBeta-SDS catalyst than in the KBeta-TEA catalyst. The higher K+ content is helpful for the formation of more Pt-0 species, and both the higher K+ content and the lower number of terminal silanol defects are favourable for the adsorption of toluene, as evidenced by XPS and the toluene-TPD profiles. More importantly, the Pt/KBeta-SDS catalyst shows very stable activities in the presence of H2O and CO2 in the feed gases. The combination of this extraordinary activity and excellent stability in the catalytic removal of toluene over the Pt/KBeta-SDS catalyst are important for future environment protection.
