Abstract:Beam steering in traditional phased arrays is usually realized by introducing incremental phase differences between antenna elements. Due to the dispersion of electromagnetic waves, traditional phased arrays inevitably suffer from beam squint problems for wideband beamforming, which significantly deteriorates the data rate and beam resolution in modern radar systems. To address this problem, we present a novel pseudorandom time-modulated antenna array (TMA) in this paper. A signal-decomposition-based time modulation (SDTM) technique is proposed to decompose the wideband radio-frequency (RF) signal into the superposition of several narrowband signals with different sub-carriers. Numerical results of a Ku-band 32-element linear antenna array show that the beam-pointing error for RF signals with 6.0 GHz instantaneous bandwidth can be reduced from 13° to less than 1°. It well demonstrates the effectiveness of the proposed technique.
