Abstract:We report on a robust, erbium-doped ultrafast fiber laser mode-locked by an artificial saturable absorber (SA) based on nonlinear polarization evolution (NPE). Unlike previous NPE fiber lasers, our cavity employs all polarization-maintaining (PM) fiber so that the laser is insensitive against environmental fluctuations. By incorporating a phase shifter in the NPE artificial SA, the oscillator possesses self-starting mode-locking ability. However, it is difficult to start pulsed operation without such a phase shifter. The simple and novel fiber laser scheme utilizing above mentioned design can directly generate 0.11 nJ, 1.20 ps ultrashort pulses at a repetition rate of 115 MHz, which is the highest repetition rate in this type of fiber lasers. We believe that this fiber oscillator offers a promising source for high repetition rate applications under less stable conditions.

Abstract:We demonstrate the first 1 GHz femtosecond erbium-doped fiber ring laser mode locked by nonlinear polarization evolution (NPE). The laser delivers a maximum average output power of 228 mW, correspondingly to single pulse energy of 0.228 nJ. The pulse spectral bandwidth is 32 nm, and the direct output pulse duration is 81.8 fs without extra-cavity compression. The integrated relative intensity noise (RIN) and the residual root mean square phase noise are measured to be 0.059% and 35 mrad (ranging from 10 Hz to 1 MHz), respectively. The result indicates that the high repetition rate lasers can operate without a significant increase in noise. This laser is an ideal source as a compact and relatively high pulse energy and short pulse at this repetition rate and shows great potential for optical frequency combs and other applications around 1560 nm wavelength.

Abstract:<p>We report on a novel architecture for robust all polarization-maintaining (PM) femtosecond linear fiber lasers mode-locked by nonlinear polarization evolution (NPE) with phase bias. Due to a non-reciprocal phase shift, the reflectivity of the artificial saturable absorber has a steeper slope around zero difference in nonlinear phase shift between the orthogonal polarizations, offering the possibility to reduce mode locking threshold and reach high repetition rates. We demonstrate an environmentally stable self-starting 105 MHz repetition rate linear Yb:fiber laser based on NPE with phase bias mode locking. The laser delivers an average power of 26.3 mW and 332 fs pulse which is further compressed to 91 fs at a pump power of 425 mW. Our work provides a novel promising compact and robust femtosecond laser for ultrafast photonic applications.</p>

Abstract:We report an all-normal-dispersion, low-repetition-rate, high-energy, twin-pulse, passively mode locked ytterbium-doped fiber laser. The mode-locking mechanism of the laser is based on nonlinear polarization evolution and strong pulse shaping with a cascade long-period fiber grating bandpass filtering in a highly chirped pulse. The laser generates a highly stable twin-pulse group with 248 ps and 296 ps duration simultaneously and maximum pulse energy of 26.8 nJ-each pulse at a 2.5445 MHz repetition rate. Energy quantization is observed, which demonstrates the nonparabolic nature of these pulses. The laser can also work in third-harmonic mode locking with 17.8 nJ energy (at a repetition rate of 7.65 MHz and pulse width of 780 ps).

Abstract:We report a passively mode-locked high repetition rate erbium-doped femtosecond fiber laser via nonlinear polarization rotation, with a fundamental repetition rate of 101.94 MHz. The output power is 34 mW when pumped by a single mode fiber coupled laser diode at 370 mW. The spectral width is 25 nm, corresponding to a transform limited pulse width of 105 fs.

Abstract:We demonstrate a self-starting 700 MHz repetition rate Yb:fiber laser incorporated with a phase biased nonlinear amplifying loop mirror as an artificial saturable absorber. The laser delivers a maximum power of 150 mW and a pulse width of 215 fs at a pump power of 710 mW. The integration of relative intensity noise (RIN) between 10 Hz and 10 MHz results in a minimum integrated RIN of 0.015%. The phase noise of the fundamental repetition rate was also characterized at different net-cavity dispersion. Although the laser is made of nonpolarization maintaining fiber, the mode locking sustains over two weeks in open air, showing its environmental stability.

Abstract:We report on an environmentally stable mode-locked all polarization maintaining fiber laser with a nonlinear amplifying loop mirror (NALM) at a ultralow repetition rate. Experimentally, using different cavity lengths we have achieved stable mode-locking at different repetition rates. By carefully adjusting the length of the total fiber of NALM, we achieve stable broadband pulse trains with a repetition rate as low as 140 kHz. The pulses can be further amplified up to 27 mu J and compressed down to 1.16 ps. The laser system has potential application for industrial application.

Abstract:A passively mode-locked fiber laser with a 1.03 GHz fundamental repetition rate and a low noise performance is demonstrated. The compact and robust laser operates at a central wavelength of 1553.9 nm with a 3 dB spectral bandwidth of 7.9 nm and a temporal width of 550 fs. All the fibers and components used in the laser are polarization-maintaining (PM), so the output pulses are linearly polarized. The degree of polarization of the optical pulses is measured to be 0.9994. The phase noise of the seventh harmonic (7.21 GHz) is measured and a low timing jitter of 11.7 fs is obtained by integrating the phase noise from 30 MHz down to 100 Hz. The noise performance is analyzed in detail, and the methods for further optimizing the timing jitter are also proposed. So far, we know this to be the first-reported low-noise all-PM erbium-doped fiber laser with a gigahertz level pulse repetition rate.

Abstract:We report on a self-starting mode-locked all-polarization-maintaining fiber laser using a nonlinear amplifying loop mirror. It delivers a 7.81 MHz train of pulses with an average power of 213 mW, corresponding to pulse energy higher than 27 nJ. The output chirped pulses can be recompressed down to ∼114fs with a grating pair compressor. The nonlinear phase shifts accumulated in the long fiber cavity can be used to compensate for the mismatched third order dispersion and increase the compressed pulse quality. The laser shows excellent stability and environmental robustness during the test.

Abstract:We report a multi-wavelength mode-locked Er/Yb codoped fiber laser with square nano-second pulse output, which is constructed with a “figure-of-eight” cavity structure. A section of polarization-maintaining Er/Yb co-doped double clad fiber was used as the gain medium and pumped by a fiber pigtailed multimode laser diode working at 975 nm via a multimode fiber combiner. Several megahertz repetition rate output pulses with peak power up to 9.2 W and pulse duration around several nanoseconds were obtained.

Abstract:We demonstrated an ultrafast Yb-doped fiber laser with a single mode fiber-graded index multimode fiber-single mode fiber (SMF-GIMF-SMF) structure based saturable absorber. The GIMF was placed in the groove of an in-line fiber polarization controller to adjust its birefringence, enabling the SMF-GIMF-SMF structure to realize efficient saturable absorption based on nonlinear multimode interference without strict length restriction. By adjusting two intra-cavity polarization controllers, stable dissipation solitons and noise-like pulses were achieved in the 1030 nm waveband with pulse durations of 10.67 ps and 276 fs, respectively. We also realized Q-switched mode-locked pulses in the same fiber laser cavity. By the dispersive Fourier transform method, the real-time spectral evolution in the buildup process of the Q-switched mode-locked state was captured, which showed that the continuous-wave in this laser could gradually evolved into the stable Q-switched mode-locked pulses through unstable self-pulsation, relaxation oscillation and rogue Q-switching stage. To the best of our knowledge, our work reveals the buildup dynamics of the Q-switched mode-locked operation in a fiber laser for the first time. And we also studied the real-time spectral evolution of the stable Q-switched mode-locked pulses, which exhibited periodic breathing property.

Abstract:A self-Q-switched and multi-wavelength mode-locked fiber laser which is based on the figure-of-eight cavity is proposed. Multi-wavelength mode-locked with the shortest pulse width of 1.6 ns and the repetition rate of 1.79 MHz are obtained when the total length of the cavity is 106.5 m. The repetition rate of the Q-switched pulse changes with the input pump power and adjustment of the polarization controllers. As we change the length of the cavity, a multi-wavelength fiber laser oscillation which operates around 1612 nm with the line space of 3.3±0.2 nm is generated. Single line, dual and triple line can be obtained by adjusting the polarization controllers.
