Abstract:Bessel beams have a wide range of applications in optical communications because their non-diffractive properties do not depend on the amplitude and phase distribution in the spatial frequency range. Recently, metasurfaces have been widely utilized as subwavelength materials for light manipulation, including the generation of Bessel beams. However, so far, no reports of metasurfaces generating Bessel beams with polarization rotation function have been published, which has potential applications for information encryption in optical communication. An all-dielectric metasurface based on the Pancharatnam-Berry (PB) phase is proposed to realize the generation of a Bessel beam with polarization rotation function under the incident of linearly polarized (LP) light. Furthermore, we exhibit dual Bessel beams with orthogonal polarization states through the superimposition of two Bessel beam phases onto a metasurface, with different polarization rotation angles and phase gradients. Our final demonstration illustrates Bessel beam arrays with polarization rotation, and this design concept can be extended to more channels and higher-order Bessel beams. The proposed all-dielectric metasurfaces based on polarization rotation function provides a new option for the application of Bessel beams in integrated optical systems and multiplexing.
Switchable Phase and Polarization Singular Beams Generation Using Dielectric Metasurfaces

Abstract:Singular beams which possess helical phase wavefront or spatially inhomogeneous polarization provide new freedom for optical field manipulation. However, conventional schemes to produce the singular beams have difficulty in realizing the flexible switch between different singular beams. In this work, we have experimentally demonstrated the capability of dielectric metasurfaces to generate three types of singular beams and switch between them at working wavelength of 1550 nm . We have shown vortex beam and cylindrical vector beam generation with single metasurface and cylindrical vector vortex beam generation with two cascaded metasurfaces. Moreover, experimental demonstration on switching cylindrical vector beam into vortex beam has also been done by combining one quarter-wave plate and a Glan laser polarizer. The experimental results match well with the analysis from the Jones matrix calculations. The average conversion efficiency of cylindrical vector beam to vortex beam was estimated to be 47.7%, which was about 2.3% lower than the theoretical prediction.

Abstract:We present a novel and efficient approach to generating Bessel-like beams through fabricating self-growing polymer microtips at the facet of single-mode fibers. To produce these beams, the length and shape of microtips were precisely optimized. Specifically, the convex droplet height and its photopolymerization parameters feature prominently in Bessel-like beams via microtips. A wide conversion bandwidth of the microtips and self-healing properties of the produced Bessel-like beam were also investigated in detail. Our microtips provide an effective, low-cost, and ultra-compact way for Bessel-like beams generation.

Abstract:A Bessel beam has the properties of propagation invariance and a self-healing effect, leading to a variety of interesting phenomena and applications. Recently, as a planar diffractive element with miniaturized size, metasurfaces are widely employed to manipulate light in the subwavelength region, including generating a Bessel beam. However, such a metasurface-generated Bessel beam allows output light with no tunable functions. Here, with the interplay of the geometric phase and the dynamic phase, we propose a method to generate and allow conversion from any orthogonal polarizations to independent Bessel beams with a single-layer dielectric metasurface. The simulation results indicate that the arbitrary conversion between different Bessel beams is related to the spin-dependent orbit motion caused by the tight-focusing effect, leading to the singularity of the spot. This physical mechanism is well studied and the theoretical model for revealing the dependence of different incident polarization on the conversion dynamics is presented. Our approach paves a way for efficient generation and multifunctional applications, ranging from high-numerical-aperture devices to compact nanophotonic platforms for spin-dependent structured beams.

Abstract:The increasing need for improved data transmission and network scalability necessitates connecting multimode fibers (MMFs) to single‐mode fibers (SMFs). Conventional fiber‐optic connectors struggle with one‐way transmission, alignment issues, and bulkiness. An all‐dielectric metasurface (MS)‐based fiber‐coupling system is proposed and demonstrated, offering alignment‐tolerant bidirectional optical interconnect at 1550 nm, showcasing the potential of lab‐on‐fiber technology for communication, trapping, and sensing. The growing demand for enhanced data transmission and network scalability requires connecting multi‐mode fibers (MMFs) to single‐mode fibers (SMFs). However, conventional fiber‐optic connector systems face challenges such as one‐way transmission, alignment issues, and bulkiness. In this study, an all‐dielectric metasurface (MS)‐based fiber‐coupling system engineered to facilitate alignment‐tolerant bidirectional optical interconnect at a communication wavelength of 1550 nm is proposed and demonstrated. The system features meticulously aligned fiber meta‐tips incorporating an MS integrated onto SMF and MMF facets. The MS collimates the divergent beam emitted from the fiber facet and focuses the collimated beam propagating through free space, enabling bidirectional transmission of optical signals between the SMF and MMF. The achieved performance includes a coupling efficiency of −5.6 dB, optimal radial and axial tolerances of 40 and 600 μm, respectively, an extinction ratio of 13.8 dB, and a signal‐to‐noise ratio of 24.3 dB at 10.3 Gb s−1. The proposed fiber meta‐tips highlight the potential of lab‐on‐fiber technology for optical communication, trapping, and biological sensing.

Abstract:Accelerating optical beams exhibit exotic features, such as nondiffractive propagation, self-acceleration, and self-healing, which have led their use in a wide range of photonics applications. However, spatial light modulator-based generators of such beams suffer from narrow operational bandwidth, high cost, low diffraction efficiency, and limited integration capability. Although recent metasurface-based approaches have yielded generators with significantly improved bandwidths and integration capacities, the resultant devices usually have ultrashort working distances and limited control over characteristic beam parameters, which decreases their utility in optical imaging and manipulation applications. Herein, we describe a synthetic-phase metasurface-based approach that overcomes these problems and increases the degrees of freedom to enable effective control of beam parameters by integrating a cubic phase profile and the phase of a Fresnel holographic lens into a single metasurface. We demonstrate this approach by using the synthetic metasurface to generate a series of Airy beams with controllable focal length (<i>i.e.</i>, working distance), narrowed beam width, and extended propagation distance. Crucially, these beam parameters are fully adjustable, which makes these focal-length-modifiable Airy beams particularly appealing for use in high-resolution, large field-of-view imaging, and deep-penetration optical manipulation. Furthermore, we show that imposing the phase of a Dammann grating into a synthetic metasurface generates a 1 × 4 array of Airy beams that exhibit the aforementioned optical properties. Abstract:Optical fibers integrated with metasurfaces have drawn tremendous interest in recent years due to the great potential for revolutionizing and functionalizing traditional optics. However, in most cases, metasurfaces have been placed on the fiber end-facet where the area is quite limited. Here, by dressing a series of identical dielectric rings around the side surface of the microfiber and adjusting their positions along the microfiber axis, we extracted guided waves into free-space radiation with continuously controllable phase shift and achieved circular-arc-shaped line focusing. We demonstrated that the off-fiber foci could be rotated around the fiber axis by tuning the polarization of the guided waves. In addition, we demonstrated that the shape of the focus could be further tuned by introducing symmetry breaking into the dielectric rings. Our study provides a new dimension for the design of optical fiber devices decorated with metasurfaces.

Abstract:Conventional method to generate autofocusing Airy (AFA) beam involves the optical Fourier transform (FT) system, which has a fairly long working distance due to the focal length of FT lens, presence of spatial light modulator (SLM) and auxiliary total reflection mirrors. Here, we propose an extremely compact design to generate high-efficiency AFA beam at visible frequency by using metasurface which is composed of a single layer array of amorphous titanium dioxide (TiO2) elliptical nanofins sitting on the fused-silica substrate. Numerical simulations show that the designed structures are capable of precisely controlling the deflection of Airy beam and tuning the focal length of AFA beam. We further numerically demonstrate that the phase modulation of AFA beam could combine with the concept of vortex light field to produce vortical AFA beam. We anticipate that such device can be useful in the ultra-compact integrated optic system, biomedical nanosurgery and optical trapping applications.
Splitting Arbitrary Polarized Light with a Flat Dielectric Metagrating

Abstract:The beam splitter is one of the basic optical components. Traditional beam splitters use bulky cubes or plates to realize beam splitting and thereby can hardly be used in a compact optical system. Recently, the beam splitter based on phase gradient metasurfaces has been proposed to split beam with a compact size. However, it is facing challenges on the efficiency and manufacturability. Herein, a beam splitter based on single-sized flat dielectric metagrating for arbitrary polarizations is proposed. The diffraction efficiency of the fabricated beam splitter reaches as high as 80% for both TM and TE polarizations at peak wavelength. Moreover, it has a broad working wavelength range (455-550 nm) at visible wavelength where the diffraction efficiency is much higher than 60%. Apart from the broadband and high diffraction efficiency, the steering angle can be simply adjusted by varying the periodicity. Splitting light with a flat metagrating enriches the field of flat photonics, opening up new possibilities in applications such as augment reality displays, imaging systems, compact spectrometers, and lidars.

Abstract:The angled and tapered antireflection and transmission-enhanced fiber-optic tips were designed, fabricated, and characterized based on nanoscale surface modification using the nano-precision focused ion beam (FIB). The developed optical fiber tips showed combined functions of antireflection and transmission enhancement for higher detection efficiency or signal-to-noise ratio because the FIB-milled nanoholes into the fiber tip endfaces could act as tapered air-filled nanopillars, changing the light propagation direction, enhancing the scattering effect, and allowing more photons to transmit along/near the glass/air interface to enhance the local evanescent field for sensing/detection.

Abstract:A dielectric metasurface that can introduce spin‐dependent differences in wave vectors is proposed with the capability of generating Bessel beam whose polarization state continuously rotates along the propagation direction. The proposed scheme expands the application of the polarized beam and can be used in the fields of distance detection, light–matter interaction, and material processing. The beam with longitudinally varied polarization provides a new dimension for polarization applications, such as material processing, longitudinal depth detection, optical communications, etc. A few different methods have so far been investigated, including spatial light modulators and diffractive optical elements. However, these methods have complex optical path, large volume, which are difficult to integrate. Here, a birefringent dielectric metasurface is demonstrated, which is capable of generating Bessel beam whose polarization state continuously rotates along the propagation direction. According to the design, when a linearly polarized light illuminates on the metasurface, the outgoing light becomes linearly polarized zero‐order Bessel beam, whose polarization angle changes as the propagation distance increases. Experimental measurements are successfully carried out. Such scheme may open new doors for potential applications in depth perception, microscopic detection, and so on.

Abstract:Metasurfaces can arbitrarily manipulate the amplitude, phase, and polarization of optical fields on subwavelength scales. Due to their arbitrary manipulation and compact size, the metasurface can be well integrated with optical fibers. Herein, we demonstrate a polarization-dependent metasurface using birefringent meta-atoms, which can independently control X- and Y-polarization incident light. Each meta-atom allows for the division of phase into 16 steps ranging from 0 to 2 for both X- and Y-polarization, resulting in 256 nanopillars selected from the meta-atom library to satisfy the required phase. With the different effective refractive indices of the cuboid meta-atoms along the X- and Y-axis, we can achieve collimation of the X-polarization emitted beam from an optical fiber while deflecting orthogonally polarized light. As a result, the proposed metasurface collimates an X-polarized beam with a beam radius of 20 um at = 1 mm and 43.9 um at = 2 mm. Additionally, the metasurface can effectively deflect the Y-polarized beam to 36.01°, consistent with the results of the theoretical computation. The proposed metasurface exhibits a deflection efficiency of 55.6% for Y-polarized beams with a relative polarization efficiency of 82.2%, while the efficiency for the X-polarization is 71.4%. Our work is considered a promising application for optical communication, sensing, and quantum measurement.

Abstract:Airy beams, accelerating optical beams with exotic properties of self-bending, self-healing and non-diffraction, are essential for a wide range of photonics applications. Recently, metasurfaces have provided an efficient platform for generating desired Airy beams within a thin thickness, but they suffer from the narrow bandwidth, especially for two-dimensional (2D) Airy beams. Here, we propose an amplitude-tailorable polarization-converting metasurface to enable ultra-wideband 2D Airy beam generation. The amplitude and phase profiles for the 2D Airy beam can be realized by tuning only the orientation of the multi-resonant meta-atom, which can operate in the range of 6.6 GHz to 23.7 GHz, or fractional bandwidth of 113%. An exemplary prototype is measured to validate the design principle, which is in agreement with the simulation results. The proposed method holds great promise for wavefront shaping, and may facilitate the uses of Airy beam for practical applications.

Metafiber transforming arbitrarily structured light

Abstract:Structured light has proven useful for numerous photonic applications. However, the current use of structured light in optical fiber science and technology is severely limited by mode mixing or by the lack of optical elements that can be integrated onto fiber end-faces for complex wavefront control, and hence generation of structured light is still handled outside the fiber via bulky optics in free space. We report a metafiber platform capable of creating arbitrarily structured light on the hybrid-order Poincaré sphere. Polymeric metasurfaces, with unleashed height degree of freedom and a greatly expanded 3D meta-atom library, were laser nanoprinted and interfaced with polarization-maintaining single-mode fibers. Multiple metasurfaces were interfaced on the fiber end-faces, transforming the fiber output into different structured-light fields, including cylindrical vector beams, circularly polarized vortex beams, and an arbitrary vector field. Our work provides a new paradigm for advancing optical fiber science and technology towards fiber-integrated light shaping, which may find important applications in fiber communications, fiber lasers and sensors, endoscopic imaging, fiber lithography, and lab-on-fiber technology.

Twisted Non-Diffracting Beams Through All Dielectric Meta-Axicons

Abstract:We demonstrate transmission-based all-dielectric, highly efficient (approximate to 73.4%) and polarization-insensitive meta-axicons (for the visible wavelength of 633 nm) to generate zero and higher order Bessel beams without using additional components. The Bessel beams, owing to their diverse applications and non-diffractive properties, attract great interest from the scientific community. It is shown that the propagation length can be increased through a lower numerical aperture (similar to 2600 lambda for NA = 0.1) whereas a higher full width at half maximum (<0.5 lambda) can be obtained for a higher numerical aperture (for NA >= 0.7). Our dielectric material, hydrogenated amorphous silicon (a-Si:H), provides a significant efficiency advantage over plasmonic and other high-index all-dielectric (e.g., TiO2 and GaN) metasurfaces in terms of cost, ease of fabrication, and CMOS compatibility. The finite difference time domain (FDTD) technique based numerically simulated and experimental results show excellent agreement. Due to the technological and scientific importance of the Bessel beams, the recommended material and meta-axicons provide an efficient and compact platform for realizing various advanced applications like optical manipulation, optical alignment, laser fabrication, imaging, and laser machining.

Abstract:Abstract Airy beams exhibit intriguing properties such as nonspreading, self-bending, and self-healing and have attracted considerable recent interest because of their many potential applications in photonics, such as to beam focusing, light-sheet microscopy, and biomedical imaging. However, previous approaches to generate Airy beams using photonic structures have suffered from severe chromatic problems arising from strong frequency dispersion of the scatterers. Here, we design and fabricate a metasurface composed of silicon posts for the frequency range 0.4–0.8 THz in transmission mode, and we experimentally demonstrate achromatic Airy beams exhibiting autofocusing properties. We further show numerically that a generated achromatic Airy-beam-based metalens exhibits self-healing properties that are immune to scattering by particles and that it also possesses a larger depth of focus than a traditional metalens. Our results pave the way to the realization of flat photonic devices for applications to noninvasive biomedical imaging and light-sheet microscopy, and we provide a numerical demonstration of a device protocol.

Abstract:Optical fiber is a well-established efficient way to guide and manipulate light and allowing high bandwidth optical transmission for long distance communication with low attenuation. Although a dielectric optical waveguide is efficient for transmitting light, its functionality is limited by the dielectric properties of the materials of core and <a class="link-external link-http" href="http://cladding.The" rel="external noopener nofollow">this http URL</a> light coming out from optical fiber is typically diverging, and the numerical aperture is determined by the refractive index of the fiber materials. Thus, the light intensity decreases significantly upon exiting the fiber. The use of metasurfaces provides the opportunity to tailor light properties for advanced light manipulation and to develop novel optical applications that are flat. By producing a specific phase profile using spatially-varied nano-antenna elements, metasurfaces can control the wavefront of the transmitted, reflected, and scattered light, and enable novel ultrathin optical components such as flat lenses. Here, we report an ultrathin optical metalens cascaded on the facet of optical fiber that enables light focusing in the telecommunication regime. In-fiber metalenses with focal lengths of 28 and 40 um and maximum efficiency of ~16.4% at a wavelength of 1550 nm are demonstrated. The integration of an ultrathin metalens and optical fiber will open the path to revolutionary in-fiber optical devices for practical applications in optical imaging, sensing, and fiber laser.

Abstract:The focusing performance of optical beams has always played an important role in various applications such as imaging, displaying, and sensing. In contrast to a traditional focused beam with gradually increasing light intensity, an auto-focusing Airy beam exhibits an abrupt way of focusing light energy. However, owning to the chromatic dispersion of light, the previously demonstrated auto-focusing Airy beam always suffers from chromatic aberration. Here, we show that with judicious dispersion engineering of its constituent nanostructures, a metasurface can generate auto-focusing Airy beam without chromatism for the visible light. In experimental demonstration, we implement a dielectric metasurface composed of TiO2 nanopillars that generates an achromatic auto-focusing Airy beam with diffraction-limited performance covering the wavelength range from 450 to 600nm. Abstract:Abstract Bessel beams have attracted considerable interest because of their unique non-diffractive, self-healing characteristics. Different approaches have been proposed to generate Bessel beams, such as using axicons, diffractive optical elements, composite holograms, or spatial light modulators. However, these approaches have suffered from limited numerical aperture, low efficiency, polarization-dependent properties, etc. Here, by utilizing dielectric Huygens metasurfaces as ultrathin, compact platforms by integrating the functionalities of Dammann gratings and axicons, we successfully demonstrate multiple Bessel beam generation with polarization-independent property. The number of two-dimensional arrays can be controlled flexibly, which can enhance information capacity with a total efficiency that can reach 66.36%. This method can have various applications, such as parallel laser fabrication, efficient optical tweezers, and optical communication.

Abstract:Metasurfaces are subwavelength artificially engineered devices which serve as the best alternative for conventional bulk optical components, owing to their unique capability to control and manipulate the intensity, phase, and polarization of the electromagnetic waves. They have emerged as an exceptional podium for the miniaturization and on-chip implementation of many diverse prodigies such as 3D imaging, lensing, beam shaping and light-twisting, etc. Regardless of the rapid development in this domain, metasurfaces exhibiting metallic scatterers are still subjected to poor transmission efficiency due to high ohmic losses and optical absorptivity. In this work, we demonstrate a transmission-based highly efficient all-dielectric metasurface to generate finite energy accelerating 1D and 2D airy beams at the visible wavelength of 633 nm by concurrently manipulating the phase and the amplitude of the cross-polarized transmitted light. The proposed metasurface employs hydrogenated amorphous silicon(a-Si:H) nanoresonators which offers a remarkable lead in term of efficiency over metals and other high-index dielectrics (such as TiO2 and GaN) with respect to cost, CMOS compatibility and ease of fabrication. Here the orientation of the nano-bars is varied to control the phase and polarization whereas its geometric parameters are optimized to tune the cross-polarized transmission amplitude. In comparison to the previously reported work, we achieved sufficiently high cross-polarized transmission efficiency i.e., 73%. Owing to its unique characteristics of being self-accelerating, diffraction free and self-healing, this Airy beam based metasurface will aid us to develop planar 2D devices for plentiful applications such as Super-resolution fluorescence imaging, light-sheet microscopy, nano-particles trapping, and optical bullets.
