Abstract:As the world continues to build hydrogen-based energy system, there remains a need to develop efficient electrocatalysts for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). Molybdenum disulfide (MoS2) 2 ) has recently risen as a potential catalyst for electrochemical water splitting, but it is bottlenecked by its insufficiency in industry preferred alkaline electrolyzer. Recently, researchers were beginning to recognize the importance and effectiveness of tuning the local reaction environment for performance enhancement of electrochemical reactions. Herein, we report that the combination of phase engineering and vacancy engineering can be a practical strategy of intentionally tailoring a local acid-like microenvironment in alkaline medium to promote catalyzing efficiency for MoS2 2 via density functional theory (DFT) calculations. Our results confirm that sulfur vacancy can be the favorable active site for water dissociation and the negatively charged sulfur site can attract and delivery proton; then the positively charged proton migrates to the most negatively charged sulfur site and accumulates around boundary, thereby forming a local acidic environment for following hydrogen desorption. These computational findings demonstrate that phase boundary and sulfur vacancy hold great potential to engineer the local reaction environment of MoS2, 2 , and exemplify a possibility to ameliorate catalytic activity by regulating reaction environment for other transition metal dichalcogenides.
