Abstract:The production of 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) from cellulose reserves is gaining attention as a value-added platform chemical, while achieving the desired HMF yield remains a formidable challenge. The present study proposed a novel coupled dissolution-decrystallization-conversion strategy for the efficient production of cellulose into HMF in formic acid/ZnCl2 deep eutectic solvents (DESs)/dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) using AlCl3 as a catalyst. The catalytic strategy involves a simple pre-hydrolysis of microcrystalline cellulose (MCC) followed by subsequent catalytic conversion and achieved a desired HMF yield of 63.9 % in 30 min at 170 degrees C. The characterization of regenerated MCC demonstrated a significant enhancement in the reactivity of MCC, achieved through the synergistic disruption of intra- and inter-molecular hydrogen bonds by formic acid/ZnCl2 DESs. The isomerization of depolymerized glucose units to fructose via 1,2-hydride transfer and proton transfer of the enediol intermediate was proposed based on analysis of the reaction intermediates. The DESs/DMSO system is capable of full component recovery, while maintaining 50.8 % HMF yield after undergoing three cycles. The reaction system is well-suited for hydrolyzing a range of carbohydrates and resulting in outstanding yields of HMF. This study offers novel insights for advancing sustainable utilization of biomass resources.
