Abstract:Donor number (DN) serves as a metric for describing the basicity of a solvent or anion and delineates the tendency to donate electrons to electron acceptors. In this review, we systematically summarize its derivation and determination methods and elucidate its impact on the performance of lithium metal batteries (LMBs). On the one hand, the DN value affects binding probability and strength with Li + ions, thereby influencing the solvation environment and closely related interfacial behavior on the Li anode. On the other hand, in the case of cathodes undergoing intermediate phase change (sulfur or oxygen cathode), DN plays a pivotal role in modulating the solubility of intermediate species of sulfur (Li 2 S x , 1 < x ≤ 8) and the oxygen cathode (LiO 2 ). The modulation determines the equilibrium between surface-absorbed pathways and solution pathways, subsequently impacting reaction kinetics and the material utilization ratio. We believe this review would give a thorough understanding of DN and provide guidance for designing advanced electrolytes for LMBs.

Tuning and Balancing the Donor Number of Lithium Salts and Solvents for High-Performance Li Metal Anode.

Abstract:The low reversibility of Li deposition/stripping in conventional carbonate electrolytes hinders the development of lithium metal batteries. Herein, we proposed a combination of solvents with a moderate donor number (DN) and LiNO3 as the sole salt, which has rarely been attempted due to its low solubility or dissociation degree in common solvents. It is found that the DN value of solvents is highly correlated to the reversibility of Li deposition behavior when LiNO3 is applied as the sole salt. The combination of LiNO3 and solvents with moderate DN behaves like a quasi-concentrated electrolyte even at a common or moderate concentration, while neither the solvents with poor solubility and low dissociation for LiNO3 (which usually corresponds to a low DN) nor the solvents with high dissociation for LiNO3 (which usually corresponds to an overly high DN) can achieve a high reversibility for low conductivity or excessive solvent decomposition. As a result, a Coulombic efficiency as high as 99.6% for Li deposition/stripping is achieved with the optimized combination. We believe this work will give a better understanding of the role of anions and solvents in the regulation of the solvation structure, and DN can be utilized as an important guideline to sieve suitable solvents for LiNO3 as the main salt to exhibit intriguing properties beyond traditional cognition.
Machine Learning Assisted Prediction of Donor Numbers: Guiding Rational Fabrication of Polymer Electrolytes for Lithium‐ion Batteries

Abstract:Polymer electrolytes are of interest in high-energy-density batteries. However, how the intrinsic electron-donating capability of polymer segments involved in coordination affects lithium-ion dissociation/transmission and rationally guides the design and fabrication of electrolytes is a highly exploratory topic. This study proposes a workable method that integrates machine learning with density functional theory to predict donor numbers (DN) for polymer building units. Using this approach, polymer chains with optimized DN are designed, effectively modulating the solvation structure of lithium-ion. Molecular dynamics simulations confirm the positive impact of polymer chains on rapid transport of lithium ions. Experimental validation of the proposed zwitterionic polymer electrolyte (ZPE) showcases satisfactory parameters: ion conductivity (0.59 mS cm-1), ion migration numbers (0.82), and activation energy (0.016 eV). Electrochemical analysis on Li|ZPE|Li symmetric batteries demonstrate sustained plating/stripping performance exceeding 3000 hours at a current density of 0.2 mA cm-2. Assembled NCM|ZPE|Li batteries exhibit stable cycling over 1400 cycles at 4.3 V, with a capacity retention ratio of 92.3%. Moreover, even under ultra-high voltages of 4.5 V and 4.7 V, NCM|ZPE|Li batteries display stable cycling performances. This approach offers a paradigmatic strategy for polymer molecule design, advancing sustainable battery technologies.

Abstract:The electrolytes in energy-dense lithium metal batteries (LMBs) face the challenge of being compatible with both the lithium anode and the high voltage cathodes. Adjusting the solvation structures of the electrolytes by regulating the interaction between ions and solvents is an effective strategy to improve the stability of LMBs. Herein, lithium trifluoroacetate (LiTFA) endowed with high donor number is introduced into ether-based electrolytes as an additive to regulate the solvation structure and further stabilize the interphase as well as accelerate the interfacial kinetic of LMBs. Due to the strong interaction between TFA- with Li+, the anion-rich solvation structure with reduced solvent coordination capability is constructed, contributing to the formation of inorganic-rich interphase layers and facilitate charge transfer reaction. Consequently, the designed electrolyte improves the reversibility of Li plating/stripping with high Coulombic efficiency of 99.24% and enables long-term cycling of Li||LiNi0.8Co0.1Mn0.1O2 (NCM811) over 100 cycles with a capacity retention of 84.37% under the condition of lean electrolyte, limited Li source and conventional Li-salt concentration. This work provides an effective and low-cost strategy to adjust the solvation structure and improve the stability of LMBs without largely sacrificing the intrinsic physicochemical property (viscosity, wettability, ionic conductivity etc.) of electrolytes.

Abstract:Salt-concentrated electrolytes offer properties beyond conventional dilute electrolytes yet suffer from high cost and viscosity which hinder their practical applications. Introducing a secondary solvent as a diluent could reduce the salt content while maintaining the local solution structure of salt-concentrated electrolytes, giving rise to localized high-concentration electrolytes (LHCEs). Through a comprehensive investigation involving over 500 samples, we find that the dielectric constant of solvent, a widely used parameter for electrolyte design, does not serve as a useful screening criterion for diluents; instead, donor number (DN) is an effective design parameter to achieve LHCE structurei.e., the primary solvent must have DN > 10 and the diluent must have DN ≤ 10. Based on this simple rule, a new LHCE using low-cost m-fluorotoluene diluent is formulated, enabling high-voltage (>4.6 V) and wide-temperature (−40–100 °C) operation of lithium batteries.

Quantitative elucidation of cathode reaction mechanisms in Li-O2 batteries within high donor number solvents

Abstract:Lithium-oxygen cells, known for their exceptional energy density, have complex reaction processes making a quantitative elucidation of the reaction mechanism, especially at the cathode quite difficult. Using density functional theory (DFT) combined with nudged elastic band (NEB) calculations, and cyclic voltammetry (CV) experiments in high donor number solvents, we developed a numerical computational model that elucidates the primary reaction pathway at the cathode. This study highlights two key reasons for the voltage gap between the charging and discharging phases: the shift in lithium superoxide's reaction voltage from lithium peroxide's thermodynamic equilibrium voltage, and the extra energy needed to electrolyze nucleated lithium peroxide. This study shows that by optimizing the high donor number solvent system and optimum battery design, up to 78.9 % of theoretical specific energy can be achievable, signaling significant prospects for advancing Li-O2 battery technology.

Abstract:LiPF6 as a dominant lithium salt of electrolyte is widely used in commercial rechargeable lithium-ion batteries due to its well-balanced properties, including high solubility in organic solvents, good electrochemical stability, and high ionic conductivity. However, it suffers from several undesirable properties, such as high moisture sensitivity, thermal instability, and high cost. To address these issues, herein, we propose an electron-donation modulation (EDM) rule for the development of low-cost, sustainable, and electrochemically compatible LiNO3-based electrolytes. We employ high donor-number solvents (HDNSs) with strong electron-donation ability to dissolve LiNO3, while low donor-number solvents (LDNSs) with weak electron-donation ability are used to regulate the solvation structure to stabilize the electrolytes. As an example, we design the LiNO3-DMSO@PC electrolyte, where DMSO acts as an HDNS and PC serves as an LDNS. This electrolyte exhibits excellent electrochemical compatibility with graphite anodes, as well as the LiFePO4 and LiCoO2 cathodes, leading to stable cycling over 200 cycles. Through spectroscopy analyses and theoretical calculation, we uncover the underlying mechanism responsible for the stabilization of these electrolytes. Our findings provide valuable insights into the preparation of LiNO3-based electrolytes using the EDM rule, opening new avenues for the development of advanced electrolytes with versatile functions for sustainable rechargeable batteries.

Abstract:Advanced electrolytes play a key role in the development of next-generation lithium secondary batteries. However, many strong polar solvents, as a major component of the electrolyte, are incompatible with the commercialized graphite anode in Li-ion batteries. In this work, we propose a new concept of the coordination number (CN) rule to tune electrochemical compatibility of electrolytes by regulating the ion–solvent-coordinated (ISC) structure. Based on this rule, we introduced the low-coordination-number solvents (LCNSs) into the high-coordination-number solvent (HCNS) electrolytes to induce anions into the first solvation shell of Li+, forming the anion-induced ISC (AI-ISC) structure. The HCNS-LCNS electrolytes with the AI-ISC structure show enhanced reduction stability, enabling reversible lithiation/delithiation of the graphite anode. Infrared analysis and theoretical calculations confirm the working mechanism of the electrochemical compatibility in the HCNS-LCNS electrolytes based on the CN rule. Therefore, the CN rule provides guidance for the design of highly stable and multifunctional electrolytes to develop next-generation lithium secondary batteries.

Abstract:In lithium-sulfur batteries, cell design, specifically electrolyte design, has a key impact on the battery performance. The effect of lithium salt anion donor number (DN) (DN[PF6]− = 2.5, DN[N(SO2CF3)2]− = 5.4, DN[ClO4]− = 8.4, DN[SO3CF3]− = 16.9, and DN[NO3]− = 21.1) on the patterns of lithium-sulfur batteries and lithium metal electrode performances with sulfolane-based electrolytes is investigated. An increase in DN of lithium salt anions leads to an increase in the depth and rate of electrochemical reduction of sulfur and long-chain lithium polysulfides and to a decrease in those for medium- and short-chain lithium polysulfides. DN of lithium salt anions has weak effect on the discharge capacity of lithium-sulfur batteries and the Coulomb efficiency during cycling, with the exception of LiSO3CF3 and LiNO3. An increase in DN of lithium salt anions leads to an increase in the cycling duration of lithium metal anodes and to a decrease in the presence of lithium polysulfides. In sulfolane solutions of LiNO3 and LiSO3CF3, lithium polysulfides do not affect the cycling duration of lithium metal anodes.

Abstract:Minimizing electrolyte use is essential to achieve high practical energy density of lithium–sulfur (Li–S) batteries. However, the sulfur cathode is more readily passivated under a lean electrolyte condition, resulting in low sulfur utilization. In addition, continuous electrolyte decomposition on the Li metal anode aggravates the problem, provoking rapid capacity decay. In this work, the dual functionalities of NO3− as a high‐donor‐number (DN) salt anion is presented, which improves the sulfur utilization and cycling stability of lean‐electrolyte Li–S batteries. The NO3− anion elevates the solubility of the sulfur species based on its high electron donating ability, achieving a high sulfur utilization of above 1200 mA h g−1. Furthermore, the anion suppresses electrolyte decomposition on the Li metal by regulating the lithium ion (Li+) solvation sheath, enhancing the cycle performance of the lean electrolyte cell. By understanding the anionic effects, this work demonstrates the potential of the high‐DN electrolyte, which is beneficial for both the cathode and anode of Li–S batteries.

Abstract:Lithium metal batteries (LMBs) have become a hot topic in the research of next-generation advanced battery technology due to their high specific energy. However, the high reaction activity between lithium metal and electrolyte is considered one of the key bottlenecks limiting large-scale applications of LMBs. As a classic electrolyte additive, LiNO3 significantly improves the stability of lithium metal in ether-based electrolytes. However, its solubility in carbonate-based electrolytes widely used in lithium-ion batteries is extremely low, and its protective effect on lithium metal is limited, which has become a key obstacle to the commercial application of lithium metal batteries. Here, we enhanced the local negative charge density of carbonyl oxygen atoms in carbonate molecules by introducing electron donors, making it easier for them to coordinate with Li+, thereby weakening the interaction between Li+ and NO3−, and significantly increasing the solubility of LiNO3 in ester electrolytes. The modified ester solvent promotes the derivatization and decomposition of salt anions, leading to the formation of a dense SEI layer rich in LiF and LiNxOy. This significantly improves the stability of lithium metal in ester-based electrolytes. The assembled Li||Li symmetric battery shows excellent cycling performance of over 4000 hours.

Abstract:Developing advanced electrolytes has been regarded as a pivotal strategy for enhancing the electrochemical performance of batteries; however, the criteria for electrolyte design remain elusive. In this study, we present an electrolyte design chart reframed through intermolecular interactions. By combining systematic nuclear magnetic resonance, Fourier transform infrared measurements, molecular dynamics (MD) simulations, and machine-learning-assisted classifications, we establish semiquantitative correlations between electrolyte components and the electrochemical reversibility of electrolytes. We propose the equivalent increment of Li salt resulting from functional cosolvent and solvent-solvent interactions for effective electrolyte design and prediction. The controllable regulation of the electrolyte design chart by the properties of solvent-solvent interactions presents varying equivalent effects of increasing Li salt concentrations in different electrolyte systems. Based on this mechanism, we demonstrate highly reversible and nonflammable phosphate-based electrolytes for graphite||NCM811 full cells. The proposed electrolyte design chart, semiquantitatively determined by intermolecular interactions, provides the necessary experimental foundation and basis for the future rapid screening and prediction of electrolytes using machine-learning methods.

Abstract:Solid electrolyte interphase (SEI) is pivotal in dictating the stability of anodes in non-aqueous batteries. However, electrolyte decomposition mechanism as an indispensable piece of the puzzle to construct a stable SEI is with few quantitative understandings. Herein, as a quantitative descriptor, the apparent electron transfer number (ETN) is acquired by a facile yet precise methodology in working lithium metal batteries with lithium bis(fluorosulfonyl)imide (LiFSI)-dimethyl carbonate (DMC)-based localized high-concentration electrolyte. Through accurate measurements of the electrolyte evolution and concurrently accumulated inactive Li by electrolyte quantitative nuclear magnetic resonance (ely-qNMR) and titration-qNMR, respectively, the decomposition rates of different electrolyte components and ETNs that define the fate of electrolyte can all be acquired in a “one-stop” fashion. The recognition of ETNs (1.0 for DMC and 5.1 for LiFSI) provides pioneering insights into the electrolyte decomposition mechanism and affords new visions for electrolyte design to promote the continuous rise of non-aqueous rechargeable batteries.

Abstract:AbstractThe undesirable interactions between the charge carriers (Li+) and various objects in the special microenvironment of batteries would cause uneven lithium (Li) metal deposition behavior, which severely impedes the application of Li metal batteries (LMBs). In recent years, many works focus on optimizing these interactions by functional molecules/ions modification. Nevertheless, related reviews are still absent. Here, this review introduces the regulation methods of Li metal deposition from molecular/ionic designs, which is a new perspective including Li+ flux homogenization, the de‐solvation process regulation, optimizing the solid electrolyte interphase (SEI) in conventional solvation structure and anion‐rich solvation structure. Also, the general design principles are studied in each mechanism and some suggestions are proposed in the prospective future directions, aiming to guide the development of molecular/ionic designs and the actual application of LMBs with high energy densities.

Abstract:Lithium metal is regarded as one of the most promising anode materials due to its intrinsic superiority including the lowest electrode potential (−3.04 V vs. SHE) and impressive theoretical specific capacity (3860 mAh/g). Even though the study of lithium metal batteries (LMBs) can be traced back to the 1970s, the practical promotion has been hindered by some substantial obstacles, such as the growth of dendrite and the low Coulombic efficiency (CE). During the past decade, extensive investigative approaches have been devoted to stabilizing the deposition of lithium metal as well as inhibiting the undesirable parasitic reactions. Electrolytes play a crucial role in the deposition of lithium, and that explains the reason why a great deal of progress has been attained in this field. This review summarizes the representative work in recent years, including the optimization of conventional electrolyte components, as well as the novel materials in a solvent, Li salt, and additives. Moreover, high-concentration electrolytes and localized high-concentration electrolytes are summarized representing two fruitful fields, based on the emerging theories of lithium-ion coordination and solvation sheath layer. Finally, some prospects are proposed to lead us closer to the large-scale application of LMBs.

Abstract:Growing market demand from portable electronics to electric automobiles boosts the development of lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) with high energy density and rate performance. However, strong solvation effect between lithium ions (Li + ) and solvent molecules in common electrolytes limits the mobility of Li + ions in electrolytes. Consequently, anions dominate the charge conduction in electrolytes, and in most cases, the value of Li + transference number ( T + ) is between 0.2 and 0.4. A low T + will aggravate concentration polarization in the process of charging and discharging, especially at high rate, which not only increases the overpotential but also intensifies side reactions, along with uneven deposition of lithium (Li) and the growth of lithium dendrites when lithium metal is used as anode. In this review, promising strategies to improve T + in liquid electrolytes would be summarized. The migration of Li + ions is affected directly by the types and concentration of lithium salts, solvents, and additives in bulk electrolytes. Besides, Li + ions will pass through the separator and solid electrolyte interphase (SEI) when transferring between anodes and cathodes. With this in mind, we will classify and summarize threads of enhancing T + from five aspects: lithium salts, solvents, additives, separators, and SEI based on different mechanisms, including covalently bonding, desolvation effect, Lewis acid-base interaction, electrostatic interaction, pore sieving, and supramolecular interaction. We believe this review will present a systematic understanding and summary on T + and point out some feasible threads to enhance battery performance by enhancing T + .

New High Donor Electrolyte for Lithium–Sulfur Batteries

Abstract:The unparalleled theoretical specific energy of lithium–sulfur (Li–S) batteries has attracted considerable research interest from within the battery community. However, most of the long cycling results attained thus far relies on using a large amount of electrolyte in the cell, which adversely affects the specific energy of Li–S batteries. This shortcoming originates from the low solubility of polysulfides in the electrolyte. Here, 1,3‐dimethyl‐2‐imidazolidinone (DMI) is reported as a new high donor electrolyte for Li–S batteries. The high solubility of polysulfides in DMI and its activation of a new reaction route, which engages the sulfur radical (S3•−), enables the efficient utilization of sulfur as reflected in the specific capacity of 1595 mAh g−1 under lean electrolyte conditions of 5 μLelectrolyte mgsulfur−1. Moreover, the addition of LiNO3 stabilizes the lithium metal interface, thereby elevating the cycling performance to one of the highest known for high donor electrolytes in Li–S cells. These engineered high donor electrolytes are expected to advance Li–S batteries to cover a wide range of practical applications, particularly by incorporating established strategies to realize the reversibility of lithium metal electrodes.

Abstract:Lithium metal batteries (LMBs) are considered one of the most promising high-energy-density battery systems. However, their practical application in carbonate electrolytes is hampered by lithium dendrite growth, resulting in short cycle life. Herein, an electrolyte regulation strategy is developed to improve the cyclability of LMBs in carbonate electrolytes by introducing LiNO3 using trimethyl phosphate with a slightly higher donor number compared to NO3 − as a solubilizer. This not only allows the formaion of Li+-coordinated NO3 − but also achieves the regulation of electrolyte solvation structures, leading to the formation of robust and ion-conductive SEI films with inorganic-rich inner and organic-rich outer layers on the Li metal anodes. As a result, high Coulombic efficiency of 99.1% and stable plating/stripping cycling of Li metal anode in Li||Cu cells were realized. Furthermore, excellent performance was also demonstrated in Li||LiNi0.83Co0.11Mn0.06O2 (NCM83) full cells and Cu||NCM83 anode-free cells using a high mass-loading cathodes. This work provides a simple interphase engineering strategy through regulating the electrolyte solvation structures for high-energy-density LMBs.
