Abstract:Spin-orbit interaction of light in metasurface is investigated in this paper. We theoretically analyze the transfromation of circularly and linearly polarized light by metasurface with Jones matrix. The results indicate that the interaction of light with spatially inhomogeneous and anisotropic metasurface leads to a coupling of spin-orbital angular momentum. The nanostructrues of metasurfaces are arranged at a definite rate of rotation, which induces an additional space-variant geometrical phase (i.e., Pancharatnam-Berry phase). The Pancharatnam-Berry phase is dependent on the polarization handedness of the incident wave. This characteristic can result in spin-dependent split. A left/right-circular polarized beam is transfromed into a right/left-circular polarized vortex beam by the metasurfaces. In the convertion process, the sign of spin angular momentum of photons is inversed. At the same time, each photon can acquire orbital angular momentum from the inhomogeneous and anisotropic media. The case that a linearly polarized beam inputs the metasurfaces also is considered. A linearly polarized wave can be regarded as the linear superposition of left-circular and right-circular polarized wave. The two circularly plarized components are respectively converted into circularly polarized vortex beam with reverse polarization handedness. The coherent superposition of the two output components forms a cylindrical vector beam. Finally, we adopt the combination of a metasurface and spiral phase plate to verify the theoretical results. The vortex phase can be eliminated by the spiral phase plate when a left-circular polarized light is input, while topological charge of vortex phase will increase when a right-circular polarized light is input. For the case of inputting linearly polarized beam, one of the two outputing circularly polarized components can be eliminated by the helical phase through using the spiral phase plate, while the topological charge of another component increases. It results in the fact that the intensity pattern splits into two parts. The central part does not have helical phase, while the ambient ring-shaped intensity has helical phase. In order to judge the polarization handedness of output wave, the Stokes parameter S-3 is measured by inserting a Glan laser polarizer and a quarter wave plate behind the spiral phase plate. The experimental results are in good agreement with theoretical analyses. These results are helpful for understanding the manipulation of light with metasurface.

Abstract:Photonic spin Hall effect (PSHE) with high efficiency and controllable transmission is widely pursued. In the paper, we designed a dielectric metasurface that could yield spin splitting effect with energy transfer efficiency up to 84%. Switching the output photonic spin states is realized by controlling the polarization azimuthal angle of the incident light. Introducing a background phase gradient, we also propose a high-efficiency asymmetric PSHE metasurface that could give rise to arbitrary transmission angles for the left and right circularly-polarized light. These results are numerically validated, which are of the significance in guiding the design of high-performance photonic spin manipulation devices. (C) 2017 The Japan Society of Applied Physics

Abstract:The metasurface with elliptical nano-structures containing doubly degenerate geometrical charge is designed to investigate the enhanced spin-orbit optical interactions, numerically as well as experimentally. It is found that localized surface plasmon (LSP) resonance with orbital angular momentum (i.e., rotating SP vortex mode carrying extrinsic orbital angular momentum) can be induced under linearly polarized illumination. On the contrary, the LSP resonance without orbital angular momentum is formed under circularly polarized illumination. Moreover, based on the different LSP modes as results of spin-orbit interaction with alternative geometrical charge, directional propagations of surface plasmon polariton in two orthogonal trajectories depending on spin states of the incident light are presented with experimental demonstration, a phenomenon called photonic spin Hall effect.

Abstract:A Dyakonov surface wave offers a promising way of guiding light in two dimensions with almost no loss but also additional freedom of modulation through the anisotropy at the interface. Here we experimentally demonstrated a spin-dependent Dyakonov surface wave mode propagating in a hyperbolic metamaterial film at a visible frequency. Due to the strong anisotropy of the hyperbolic metamaterial, a Dyakonov type mode shows a large allowed angle band and transverse spin with its direction determined by the orientations of the hyperbolic anisotropy and surface normal, based on which we experimentally observed the photonic spin Hall effect of the surface wave mode. This work enables a new generation of two-dimensional photonic circuits with spin-dependent excitation/detection and modulation devices at the subwavelength level.

Abstract:The photonic spin Hall effect, originating from photonic spin-orbit interactions, has attracted considerable research interest due to its potential for applications in spin-controlled nanophotonics. However, most research efforts have focused only on 1D modulation, including transverse or longitudinal spin-dependent splitting. Here, a novel method is proposed for multidimensional spin-dependent splitting on a single-layer dielectric metasurface. Due to the interplay of the Pancharatnam-Berry phase and dynamic phase, the longitudinal focusing and transverse shifting of the different spin state photons can be simultaneously achieved. Moreover, the conjugated characteristic of the modulated phases of Pancharatnam-Berry phase metasurfaces for different spin photons can be broken, and both symmetric and asymmetric transverse spin-dependent splitting are obtained with the proposed method. This method can be used for the multidimensional and flexible manipulation of spin photons and has potential in spin-controlled nanophotonics, ranging from optical communication to beam shaping and optical sensors.

Abstract:Photonic spin-Hall effect is significantly magnified in a curved hyperbolic metamaterial (hyperlens) with hyperbolic dispersion. We theoretically and numerically analyze the magnification of the photonic spin-Hall effect from a single dipole emitter. Through studying the dispersion of the curved hyperbolic metamaterial, a maximum half angular separation of 45.0 degrees between the right-handed circular and left-handed circular polarization channels can be obtained. Moreover, the curved hyperbolic metamaterial can provide a complete separation of the spin dependent radiation channels. Such a magnified photonic spin-Hall effect may find potential applications in quantum information processing, directional switching, and polarization sorting. Published by AIP Publishing.

Abstract:The unidirectional excitation of near-field optical modes is a fundamental prerequisite for many photonic applications, such as wireless power transfer and information communications. We experimentally construct all-electric Huygens and spin metasources and demonstrate anomalous unidirectional excitation of high-k hyperbolic modes in two types of hyperbolic metasurfaces. We use a Huygens metasource to study the unidirectional excitation of hyperbolic bulk modes in a planar hyperbolic metamaterial (HMM). Specifically, unidirectional excitation is the same as that in free space in the vertical direction, but opposite to that in free space in the horizontal direction. This anomalous unidirectional excitation is determined by the anisotropic HMM dispersion. In addition, we use a spin metasource to observe the anomalous photonic spin Hall effect in a planar hyperbolic waveguide. For a near-field source with a specific spin, the guide mode with a fixed directional wave vector is excited due to spin-momentum locking. Because the directions of momentum and energy flows in the HMM waveguide are opposite, the unidirectional excitation of hyperbolic guided modes is reversed. Our results not only uncover the sophisticated electromagnetic functionalities of metasources in the near-field but may also provide novel opportunities for the development of integrated optical devices.

Abstract:Spin angular momentum enables fundamental insights for topological matters, and practical implications for information devices. Exploiting the spin of carriers and waves is critical to achieving more controllable degrees of freedom and robust transport processes. Yet, due to the curl-free nature of longitudinal waves distinct from transverse electromagnetic waves, spin angular momenta of acoustic waves in solids and fluids have never been unveiled only until recently. Here, we demonstrate a metasurface waveguide for sound carrying non-zero acoustic spin with tight spin-momentum coupling, which can assist the suppression of backscattering when scatters fail to flip the acoustic spin. This is achieved by imposing a soft boundary of the π reflection phase, realized by comb-like metasurfaces. With the special-boundary-defined spin texture, the acoustic spin transports are experimentally manifested, such as the suppression of acoustic corner-scattering, the spin-selected acoustic router with spin-Hall-like effect, and the phase modulator with rotated acoustic spin.

Abstract:Here, we investigate the spin-induced manipulation of orbitals using metasurfaces constructed from geometric phase elements. By carrying the spin effects to the orbital angular momentum, we show experimentally the transverse angular splitting between the two spins in the reciprocal space with metasurface, as a direct observation of the optical spin Hall effect, and an associated global orbital rotation through the effective orientations of the geometric phase elements. Such spin Orbit interaction from a metasurface with a definite topological charge can be geometrically interpreted using the recently developed high order Poincare sphere picture. These investigations may give rise to an extra degree of freedom in manipulating optical vortex beams and orbitals using "spin-enabled" metasurfaces.

Abstract:Light possesses both spin and orbital angular momentum (AM). While spin AM is determined by helicity of circular-polarization, orbital AM is characterized by topological charge of vortex beam. Interaction of AM with optical beam orbit leads to optical spin Hall or orbital Hall effect, exhibited as spin-dependent or topological charge-dependent transverse shift of optical beam. Conservation of AM enables spin-to-orbital AM conversion, where circular-polarized Gaussian beam is converted to opposite-helicity circular-polarized vortex beam with topological charge $\pm 2$, an example of controlling spatial beam profiling by spin flip. However, the resultant vortex beam has the beam center of gravity unchanged, the same as that of incident Gaussian beam, meaning a null transverse shift. Here we introduce a cyclic group symmetric metasurface to demonstrate generation of vortex beam exhibiting spin-dependent transverse shift, namely, spin- and orbital-Hall effect, attributed to an alteration of dynamical phase of scattered beam according to the order $n$ of cyclic group while keeping geometric phase constant. Capability of spin-controlled spatial beam profiling with a transverse shift via spin- and orbital-Hall effect has important implications for spatial demultiplexing in optical communication utilizing orbital AM mode division multiplexing as well as for optical vortex tweezer and signal processing involving vortex beams.

Abstract:By rotating the elements in a metasurface, the original spin functionalities can be switched to a new set of spin functionalities, and this switching can be separated for spin states with no limitation of the conjugate relation. The relationship between the phase profiles of spin states before and after the rotation is revealed as a guideline for spin functionality design. Metasurfaces are a class of planar optical components that are engineered to manipulate electromagnetic waves, including their spin states in terms of circular polarizations. For example, the Pancharatnam–Berry (PB) phase has been exploited in metasurfaces for various spin functionalities, but these spin functionalities, exhibit conjugate relations for spin states. Recent advances combining the PB phase and propagation phase have implemented completely independent spin functionalities for spin states. However, the spin functionalities are fixed once the metasurfaces are designed. Here, this work proposes and demonstrates that the spin functionalities designed from the PB phase and propagation phase can be further extended by simply rotating the elements in a metasurface. This extension is based on a relationship between phase profiles of spin states that are acquired before and after the rotation. Proof‐of‐concept demonstrations are performed for the extended spin functionalities, including the conversion from spin angular momentum to orbital angular momentum, and spin‐dependent holograms. This extension may find use in relevant applications such as polarized display and dual‐polarized holography.

Abstract:Recently, Pancharatnam–Berry (PB) metasurfaces have exhibited powerful capabilities to control spin-polarized light. However, the adopted abrupt PB phase, introduced by simply rotating the basic elements, is spin-locked with opposite signs for different spin excitations, greatly limiting their practical applications. Here, we introduce a high-efficiency and broadband spin-unlocked metasurface with two mechanisms of a resonance phase and a geometric phase perfectly combined together. The design strategy is quite simple just through changing one geometric parameter rather than multi parameter optimization. As a proof of concept, the anomalous photonic spin Hall effect based on the spin-unlocked metasurface is demonstrated first, showing high experimental efficiency (over 80%) in a broad frequency range (11.3–16.6 GHz). Furthermore, another spin-unlocked metasurface is built to demonstrate the completely independent wavefront manipulations, i.e., the focusing effect and anomalous reflection. These findings significantly expand the electromagnetic control ability of a metasurface.

Abstract:Optical spin-Hall effect (OSHE) is a spin-dependent transportation phenomenon of light as an analogy to its counterpart in condensed matter physics. Although being predicted and observed for decades, this effect has recently attracted enormous interests due to the development of metamaterials and metasurfaces, which can provide us tailor-made control of the light-matter interaction and spin-orbit interaction. In parallel to the developments of OSHE, metasurface gives us opportunities to manipulate OSHE in achieving a stronger response, a higher efficiency, a higher resolution, or more degrees of freedom in controlling the wave front. Here, we give an overview of the OSHE based on metasurface-enabled geometric phases in different kinds of configurational spaces and their applications on spin-dependent beam steering, focusing, holograms, structured light generation, and detection. These developments mark the beginning of a new era of spin-enabled optics for future optical components.

Abstract:Light carries spin angular momentum, which, in the free space, is aligned to the direction of propagation and leads to intriguing spin Hall phenomena at an interface. Recently, it was shown that a transverse-spin (T-spin) state could exist for surface waves at an interface or for bulk waves inside a judiciously engineered metamaterial, with the spin oriented perpendicular to the propagation direction. Here, we demonstrate the spin Hall effect for transversely spinning light—a T-spin–induced beam shift at the interface of a metamaterial. It is found that the beam shift takes place in the plane of incidence, in contrast to the well-known Imbert-Fedorov shifts. The observed T-spin–induced beam shift is of geometrodynamical nature, which can be rendered positive or negative controlled by the orientation of T-spin of the photons. The unconventional spin Hall effect of light found here provides a previously unexplored mechanism for manipulating light-matter interactions at interfaces.

Abstract:In this paper, all-metallic reflective metasurfaces comprising S-shape streamline structures are proposed to achieve the photonic spin-Hall effect with average cross-polarization conversion efficiency exceeding ∼84% in the range of 8-14 µm. By comparing with all-metallic nanobricks, it is demonstrated that the electric field coupling could be enhanced by constructing a similar split ring resonator between adjacent unit elements to further improve its efficiency and bandwidth. As a proof of concept, the photonic spin Hall effect and spin-to-orbit angular momentum conversion could be observed by two metadevices with the maximum diffraction efficiency of ∼95.7%. Such an all-metallic configuration may provide a platform for various high-efficiency electromagnetic components, catenary optics, and practical applications.

Abstract:The photonic analogy of the quantum spin Hall Effect, that is, a photonic topological insulator (PTI), is of great relevance to science and technology in optics based on the promise of scattering‐free surface states. The challenges in realizing such scattering‐free surface states in PTIs and other types of symmetry‐protected topological phases are the result of the exact symmetry needed for creating a pair of time reversal pseudo‐spin states or special boundary conditions, wherein the exact symmetry imposes strict requirements on materials or boundary conditions. Here, it is experimentally demonstrated that scattering‐free edge states can be created with neither the aforementioned exact symmetry requirements for materials nor the topological transitions. This system is constructed by simply placing together regular homogeneous metamaterials, which are characterized by highly different bianisotropies. Of the particular surface states, backward reflection would be deeply suppressed, provided that the related evanescent tail into the bulk regions vanishes shortly and that the pseudo‐spin is not flipped by the scatterers. This work gives an example of constructing scattering‐free surface states in classical systems without strict symmetry protections and may potentially stimulate various novel applications in the future.

Abstract:In this Letter, we report the significant enhancement of the photonic spin Hall effect (SHE) in a plasmonic metasurface with S 4 symmetry. We find that an enhanced SHE of reflected light can occur in both horizontally and vertically polarized incident beams, and the maximum transverse displacement can approach half of the beam waist. Such a large displacement is caused by the non-resonant and near-zero pseudo-Brewster angles in the plasmonic metasurface. Owing to S 4 symmetry, a unidirectional SHE is obtained in the metasurface, i.e., large and tiny transverse displacements are realized for a linearly polarized beam incident from the opposite side. This Letter provides a new, to the best of our knowledge, way to achieve an enhanced photonic SHE and offers more opportunities for designing spin-based nanophotonic devices.
